  • ‪@england‬ and their Mens National Team has come under a lot of criticism throughout the group stages for their performances despite topping their group. Gareth Southgate and his team have looked less than convincing, but it goes behind just team selection and formation. Players like Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, and everyone else are world class players they just need more clear references on how to use their ability.
    Where do you think England will finish in the Euros?

    Southgate is fundamentally, a limited manager tactically.
    He had great success based of a simple system:
    -3ATB with at least one DM to provide defensive solidity
    -threat from set pieces
    -wingbacks who can cross
    -Kane dropping deep to play runners in behind to compensate for a lack of creative mids
    -as well as two gift wrapped easy knockout paths in 18 and 21.
    The losses of Maguire (set piece threat) Shaw (natural width on left) Sterling and Rashford (run in behind) have shown his shortcomings this year and how Gareth really doesn't have a plan B

      I find it ironic that he's not tried three at the back now given it would be ideal for the current players (using more attacking minded players, instead of full backs, in the wing back roles). in a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 you could have Gordon or Saka left of the 4, Trent (or Saka) on the right of the 4, Bellingham/Mainoo/Wharton alongside Rice in CM and still have 2 from Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, Saka behind/wide of Kane.
      e.g. 3-4-3 of Pickford; Guehi, Stones, Walker; Gordon, Bellingham, Rice, Saka; Foden, Kane, Palmer
      or 3-4-2-1 Pickford; Guehi, Stones, Walker; Gordon, Rice, Mainoo, Saka; Bellingham, Foden; Kane
      lots of different options to achieve similar things. but whatever options are taken it needs much more movement and interaction between players for them to create goal scoring opportunities.

    Thanks for the great analysis. This macro/team tactical view provides a great angle of England's problem apart from identifying each player's issues.

      Yeah I completely agree! With such quality players they are a very interesting case study

    Uruguay ran a similar build up yesterday with single pivot and both fullbacks low (as a bielsa Team’s often do). To build on your point of creating eventually overload, Uruguay achieved this through a tremendous amount of movement before and after a line breaking pass. England players were comically slow in comparison. There are so many ways to solve this problem, but they seem incapable of trying. Just like they are incapable of denying progression from their midblock, using a press, or playing in combination to penetrate the back line. I was interested in how they would play Tripier as a right footed left back, but he just does the classic overlap play and is always hindered by having the ball in the wrong foot. It’s a symphony of tactical errors out there.

      @@ModernFootballAnalyst if you have limited time, just watch the second half. they are fun to watch. Not quite as dynamic as leads United but very impressive for an international team.

    this is great analysis and something that so many other pundits and analysts don't pick up on enough.
    it really demonstrates how static we are and lack any kind of movement. but this isn't really new, it's been like this for as long as I can remember.
    there's this obsession in England about 'keeping width' as if they just should all stay in the position on the teamsheet (as if having players in close proximity is a bad thing) and actually the focus should be on the momevement, as you highlight. when people do think about the movement it's so often simply about 'getting in behind' teams in the context of direct/long passes, rather than using it to stretch teams, or working short passes with lots' of quicker movments to get in behind.
    I'd quite like to see Foden, Palmer and Mainoo all playing together, I think those 3 in particular all look like they want to be on the move all the time and have the technical ability and understanding to work off each other well and move the ball quickly in tight spaces.

    Your speech cadence and inflection at the end of each sentence is very hard to receive and process information from. I dont know if anyone has told you that. But really good content otherwise. Keep it up.

      To add to that, I'm not sure if you cut the videos shorter but it feels that there's no gap between sentences within each sections. On top of that, I feel that you tend to join multiple sentences - with different points - using "but" or "and". These made it hard for me to understand where you are at in your sentences and I felt like listening to a train of information that I have to piece together myself. Good content though!

    interesting that you picked out Bellingham for making those channel runs beyond Kane and the defensive line. I feel like that's something he hasn't done anywhere near enough of. I'd be intersted to see some stats on that.

    The expected goals for and against is the lowest of all remaining squads. England better practice those penalties.

    tactics don't matter if you lack a hungry team. Watching England play is torture right now and i want my time back! The issue is that all these Premier League players act like they're at their clubs right now, ZERO motivation to play for their COUNTRY. It's mindboggling how you can play without any fire in your heart, disgusting!

    • @user-cq6dg4oq2s
      @user-cq6dg4oq2s День тому

      Absolutely. You can see how much more playing for their countries means to players at the other teams. For the England players it's just another tournament.
      They're also expecting the fawning media coverage they normally get at club level but because they don't get the importance of international football they can't take any criticism. The supporters are also all actually from England, not the usual tourists and foreign fans who watch from the rest of the world. It's a lot of people who follow teams in the lower divisions and many won't even care about the premier league or european club competitions - they don't see these players as the deities they're told they are on a day-to-day basis.

    England has been a big disappointement, you can´t have that amount of quality in your team and play so badly, waste of a gener.ation

    • @user-cq6dg4oq2s
      @user-cq6dg4oq2s День тому

      Same conversation every tournament. How often does it need to be repeated until maybe realise it's not true? Maybe they're not as good as people think and this is what happens when you see them play without their foreign teammates. The average footballing IQ throughout the team drops.
