Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Emotionally Manipulative?

  • I thoroughly enjoyed the final Guardians of the Galaxy outing even though I had my criticism of it. But, one criticism I’ve seen a lot of is that it's “emotionally manipulative”. In this video, I untangle what that really means and whether or not I think Guardians 3 fits the bill!

I just saw it today and loved it. I feared someone would die by the end and was happy to see everyone get a happy ending even though many went their own way at least they were alive. I found this movie funny where it needed to be and so sad when it wanted to make us really feel for Rocket and his furry friends. I loved it and wish more movies would take the time to tell better stories and cast members we really care about.

Gunn always subverts in some way, even when apparently "manipulating" - but he always sets it up. Drax has already been shown to be almost indestructible (he even bounced back from the Warlock pounding at the beginning), so his wounds were only going to be a set-back. Drax even has the line, "We kill just one guy that nobody loves," which deliberately happens to be the guy casually cruel to the "experiments" and animals for no reason - even the High Evolutionary survives!
In a sense, a part of nearly all the main cast "dies" - Nebula beats her anger, Mantis her dependency, Gamora her coldness, Drax his rage, Peter his running away, Rocket his heritage, Kraglin his self-confidence. Groot was the only one carrying no baggage as he grew up witnessing it all on another level (and in a sense, had already died and was reborn anew).

Really really good review/discussion. I'm glad I waited for big-screen watch two until after seeing/hearing this video. I liked the movie, but was a little disappointed in it .. several things were like 5% or 10% less good than I was hoping for, so I left my first viewing in a bit of an over-critical mode. But the fact I =want= to see it on the big screen again, heck, that's kind of the definition of a pretty good movie, right? I think a few days wait and hearing your take have prepped me for a better second take

    Honestly I enjoyed guardians 3
Yes there are moments of the movie that are hard to watch if you love animals
But after watching it and then rewatching guardians 1 you really begin to realize why rocket was suck a massive jerk for a huge chunk of the movie
What he went through was absolutely nothing short of horrific
And the payoff when he gets revenge on his tormenter after so long is so satisfying

I don’t think the issue was that “nobody died”. The issue was that the language of the film (and the marketting) heavily implied important characters were about to die (so eliciting that emotional reaction), only to quickly walkback on that direction. What is the point of a third death fake-out that adds little to the overall story? That is ‘emotionally manipulative’.

I thought the Peter Quill death fakeout was slightly emotionally manipulative. But only really because it was very obvious that they were building up Adam Warlock to be the one to save him.

I looked up spoilers before going, out of fear that a character I liked would die. The animal cruelty was HEAVY. I used to work in animal rescue. All the pets in my home are rescues. One in particular was found in a box, on the side of a road. Thin, injured, stained fur, etc. After watching this movie, I came home to snuggle my fur family. They trotted over to me, with perky ears, bouncing around, showing that they were happy to see me. Normally I laugh at their antics, but this time I bawled like an infant. Yes, I'm a delicate little pansy. I'm not normally though, and I blame _that_ scene with Rocket for making me crumble. I've watched it since (because I seem to enjoy torturing myself) and it makes me feel ill.

Personally I knew that no one was going to die except for maybe star lord. While I do think the fake out deaths were excessive I feel it would’ve out a sour taste in my mouth if 1 of the guardians died. Although I do think the fake out deaths were pointless aside from maybe star lords. That was effective imo

No way home is so overrated it relies way to much on nostalgia . This on the other hand is how you do a proper ending . You don’t have to kill everyone to have a good ending cough Star Wars sequel trilogy lol.

Agreed - I do still enjoy NWH, but on rewatch, it doesnt work nearly as well for me as that first time. Gotta say though, that first time was a pretty amazing theater experience
Edit: and yes… agreed you don’t have to kill everyone lol

Its a good movie, but it 100% used emotional manipulation. Some of the animal scenes just made me roll my eyes because they tried to make them as sad as possible.. it didnt earn the feelings, just like you say. It just forces them upon us.
Also, the drax scene you were talking about, I didnt believe for one second he would die. Same with peter at the end. Neither are going to die.

I really wanted to like the whole "Meat planet" side quest. It was interesting & had a "Rick and Morty" vibe. But the awkward cameos and bad jokes (for an ultimately pointless fetch quest) killed 30mins of this movie for me.

Fair and that’s also the scene with the “Drax is dying… not really!”

    So, here's the thing:
    1) High Evolutionary isn't dead.
    2) Rocket already got closure in Vol2, with Yondu and Peter and him even became friends from bickering they did at the start. Yondu pretty much spells out what happened with Rocket.
    3) They didn't do anything with Gamora. She was with the Ravagers when Vol3 began and she remained with them when it ended. Instead Gunn uses it to throw shade at Russo brothers for "changing Quill's character" (hitting Thanos on learning about Gamora), when in Vol2, he snaps at Ego for killing his mom.
So long and short of it is, yes, the movie is enjoyable and "emotionally manipulative"
Love your essays on Dark and Succession!

Pretty spot on analysis, though subjectively I felt that a) the bio planet was like watching an STD fester (which sucked) and b) 3 fake out deaths is literally half the guardian squad, come on! and c) starlord surviving the vacuum of space after chasing his ipod, gimme a breakkkkkkkkk. Totally agree that the animal prison stuff wasn't manipulative.
