    Nice job on the striker. I usually hit the striker with the flint not the flint with the striker but to each their own. I would be greatly overjoyed to have access to that much flint. By the way, don't cater to the few that don't care for your voice. Most of us enjoy your commentary. That's how we learn. Thanks for sharing.

    Just sent a link to this video to my mate who is a flint and steel aficionado. Here in Australia you can only get flint in one location, Mt Gambier, and it is nearly 3000k away from us! He is going to go nuts when he sees what you have just up the road in that paddock!

    mate your backyard and field of flint make me sick with envy, I would kill to have access to such a field of sparkable stone like that.
    Personally, I do a thorough quench of the striker and then anneal the tine with a propane torch with the strike face in water to protect it.

    Nice striker.
    I recently have been thinking of using silicone spray on my anvil and tools, my thinking is, it would give a hydrophobic coating against rust, but also not be flammable, so it might not burn off when you have hot steel on the anvil.
    I know it works for rust, i’ve had great results with it on locks that are outdoors, one squirt loosened up a rusted padlock, and it never rusted again over the next 6 years.
    I’ll give it a try and let you know!

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Рік тому

      Go for it!

    • @shortfuse43
      @shortfuse43 Рік тому

      Just wipe off your anvil at the end of the day, give it a quick light spray of WD-40. I put that on my anvil after each use and it has never rusted in a humid environment. No worry about flammability...just do a quick wipe down with a paper towel and it's no problem and safe to use.

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Рік тому +1

      @@shortfuse43 why bother? As soon as you start forging it all goes away!

    • @Vikingwerk
      @Vikingwerk Рік тому

      @@shortfuse43 i’m not really worried about it catching fire, I just figure it might last longer if it does not cook off when the anvil is used.

    Good to see you smithing again, Gary😊 You must have a good stash of the old type high carbon rasps and not some of the newer types that are only case hardened.

    I'd love to have some of that flint for my flint lock rifle. It's hard to get here in the States. I have a rasp just waiting to be made into a steel. I will tell you, leaving the face soft works better for sparks than a hard face. I have an induction forge and just moved my anvil and stump inside for the winter. Time to start up a few projects such as candle holders and spatulas.

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  Рік тому

      I have found exactly the opposite, a soft face produces less sparks and just tears lumps out of the steel wearing it out much quicker!

      That's what you use when you use the flint striker to start a fire

    • @Vikingwerk
      @Vikingwerk Рік тому +1

      Easy to make, get you a tin like an altoids can or the like, (all metal with a lid that shuts) fill it with 1 inch (about 3cm) squares of white cotton cloth (old T-shirts work fine) snap the lid shut, use a nail to poke a *small* hole in the lid, and chuck it in a fire. I usually stick mine in my bbq grill once I finish cooking, and leave it as the fire goes out, but in a fireplace would work. After it burns out and cools off, open it up, if there is any cloth not coal black, close it up and do it again. Once it is all black, its done. Tear off a little, and strike a spark in it, should catch and hold an ember really nice.
      I have a can opener that un-crimps the can seals rather than cutting the can lid, so I use tuna cans for this.

      Major surgery on my rotator cuff, reattach the tendon to the bone and repair several tears including the bicep. Two months in a sling then another two months off work. It’s been a year now and it’s still not 100% but the surgeon said it could take 18 months so I’m on target.
