Today, I only used the drop left over from the steel that I made using my grinder, but this would work just as well with a whole, intact file. Using a whole file, I could see getting 3 pieces from the breaking process, maybe bending the soft tang around into a loop to accept a lanyard, maybe JB Welding eyes on the other 2 pieces for a lanyard... You could also get very creative here with the "JB Weld of it all"! LOL!

You had me going with that very first swing - don't let me ever make ya' mad! :) I had no idea that it would be so easy to break the file, the ultimate blow really wasn't that strong.
You're final 60 seconds or so answered a bunch of my Flint & Steel questions. THANKS!
Thanks Randy!
Best topic
😂😂😂😂 u got me on the slow mo was not expecting that
LOL! Thank you!
That is good to know so thank you David.
Very informative demo, thanks David!

Can't wait to get outa here. Thanks to Jesus I can get home!
Glad you make videos for folks who are short on cash ! Many Thanks Brother !!
Lol! I like that!
Great info David! I'm going to try this! Thanks!
David, there is a reason that hammer is called MJOLNIR (Thor's Hammer). Great video !
Lol! I couldn't follow through with that slow motion hammer blow... didn't want to drive those stacked logs below ground!
Nice... Thanks!
Good video David
After watching your first vid on making a steel out of a file I went and made a couple and man they throw better sparks than the manufactured steel I bought! Thanks for the vids!
I think so too.Thank you!
Hi David, great video as usual, after seeing you make a file striker whith the lanyard hole I made myself one whith one extra use, I ground the end oposite the hole to a square edge, this makes a great ferro rod striker, tinder scraper etc. Ps. Round the corners off or you'll have no pockets left , lol .Best wishes for the new year to you and your's. I'll catch you on the next one, lol.
I guess these new broken edges would scrape well as you say. If I had thought about it, I'd have included some ferro rod ation in this one too. Thanks!
Looks like the striations would heat up and throw starts better than a smooth surface?
They break the sharp edge off the Flint. Microscopic pieces of iron have to be scraped off steel.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl yeah, that makes sense…I saw that you explained it later in the video…good presentation!
Thanks David, Now I think I know why its so hard to light my char cloth I'll have to grind my edge.
Yes, let me know if it makes the difference. Not all files are as sparky as mine. So that's another possibility.
The first one i made, i broke by smacking it on the corner of a concrete block. Scrape the ridges off the side by rubbing it on the concrete to grind off the ridges. It seems to work better than the big one i made with a grinder
It looks like, by today's experiments, those side ridges have got to go. Thanks!
Will a knife made of D2 steel makes Sparks when using Flint??
I don't Know. It must be high carbon steel.
Kalo di bilang harus dua, tahu donk 🙏🙏❤️👍
is that 1095 steel file?
Yes, I think files are.
