This was the last review I watched before finally committing to buying the 2021 Propel Advanced Disc 1. I upgraded the tyres before leaving the Giant store on the advice of this video and the Giant technician . I managed to get the bike for £3,824 as the new 2022 models were available. Amazing value for money. I tested the bike on one of my local 30 mile rides that I often do. The route has just over 3,000 meters of elevation gain. I beat my all time PB set on my 2013 Pinarello by 9 MINUTES !!!! My Pinarello weighs in about 1kg lighter than the Propel but it’s aero design, tubeless tyres and the new top spec 28mm tyres just overpowered that 1kg disadvantage. I also decided not go for tue Di2 package and went back to the simple cable controlled Ultegra setup. The manual trim controls on the front crank work perfectly. If your budget is £4,000 to £4,500 I can’t imagine finding a better all round package. Thank you Cam for your review of the Propel. It gave me the confidence to pick the bike.
Hi Cam. I own the 2021 SL0. It has bugger all flex. It is still compliant and it is a missile. I threw the cadex tyres in the bin. I am running Maxxis High Road tubeless. The bike weighs 7.2kg.
Agree, have had the model up with Di2 for 2 years and just changed to the Schwalbe One's, also recommended by a Giant dealer. I did opt for the 28's and have only done 70Km's since but it does feel a LOT better. Its a great bike overall - only thing I thought you might mention is that to me compared to previous bikes it can feel a bit numb when pottering around, but when you are really pushing it does feel far more in its "sweet spot". Talking of value, I was a Trek guy before but saved over $6k from the equivalent specced Trek Madone which is crazy really.
Hi, I’m thinking of buying the same bike - 2021 propel advanced pro 0, was looking to upgrade the tyres too but read Giants website and it says 26mm max, I see you’ve fitted 28’s with no issues?
Giant is always a great value for money!! Best 1500 euro I ever spent when starting to ride bikes!! I still ride my tcr and defy and love them!! In future, I'd like to try the sworks bikes, but the dogmas are pretty hard to beat I guess....
So apparently I can't find a Merida Reacto 8000 anywhere in my size until some time mid next year. Have a test ride down at Giant Brisbane on the Pro model of this on Thursday to check it out, thanks for the review as it has me feeling better about taking the second choice.
It's interesting what you say about comfort. A well known German magazine wrote the ride is very harsh. But i trust your verdict more than some engineers who don't race the bikes. And of course, they tested it with the Gavia tires.
I hear the stock wheels that come with the Reacto really hold it back. Throwing on some top tier wheels and tyres really take it to another level. Will wait for your review though
Before ending up with my 2018 Giant Propel Advanced 1 Disc i tried Venge Vias, S5 and Canyon Aeroad. The Giant was the cheapest and stiffest and since I'm 95kg/350 ftp i need a very rigid frame. Maybe it's up to the Giant having much better wheels at the price-point than the competitors but i disagree on the flexing part and experience almost no flex at all compared the the before mentioned competitors. Thanks for a good review.
Thanks for sharing on the thread Peter, and interesting to hear. I guess everyones riding experiences can be different, and terrain and the style of riding can play a big factor.
Great review Cam. Still can't get over you going down Gyndier Dr through turn 10 one handed while holding a camera....now that's bike handling skill! 😄
It’s quite difficult to find a review of this particular bike online . Giant should definitely be paying you commission considering you bought the bike to review it . Excellent job . Regarding the Winsoace Hyper wheels you have been reviewing could you try to explain the difference between a 50 & 65 version . Thanks in advance
Great review Cam I used to own a rim braked TCR Advanced pro 1 2018 and while I loved its speed and handling the ride for me was very unforgiven on the badly surfaced roads where I live but from what I'm led to believe about the new TCR is the ride is "far improved" though how true this is who knows.

Good unbiased review Cam. I have the 2020 version of the same model and the first thing I did was bin the stock tyres and put Pro Ones on. Second the comfort, done a few 100 mile rides now and it's not beaten me up. The roads are crap in the UK with loads of pot holes and this horrible surface dressing that they insist on doing during the summer.
Hi Cam. Great review, thanks. You mention in the review that it doesn’t “wow” you in the same was as say the SystemSix. Can you elaborate on this a bit? I’m deciding between these two bikes and hard to avoid the value for money of the Propel, but the SystemSix is just so fast and mega comfortable. Cheers mate.
Hi Cam, what do you think about the idea that you review all the bikes with the same tires, at least in your segment comperesing. since tyre's can make a huge improvement. for example the difference between conti 5000 TL vs One tubeless, will be around 7 watts for both wheels. Let me know
Agreed. And I'd say same wheels and same tyres. "cheap" bikes come with shit wheels, and are commonly upgraded. My own giant propel came with horrendous hoops. Day and night with better wheels
Hey Cam, I'd be very interested to know your opinion on tyre width on our Sunshine Coast roads. I'm probably going to get myself a pair of new Schwables and I'm teetering between 28 and 30. Consider Louis Bazzo, Cootharaba, McKinnon and Noosa - Cooroy roads. I should probably ad that my ideal choice would be Conti GP5000 but I'm not sure about those on the Giant tubeless rim setup.
Good review Cam. My only suggestion would be for you to test ride the new TCR Advanced (not SL) before drawing comparisons between the two. Also, you owned the TCR Adv SL which will definitely be a lot stiffer and lighter than the Propel Adv here. Cheers Mate!
Thanks mate, that is good feedback. To be honest though most of the softness came through the frontend, I personally found. But it would be interesting to gauge that one for sure.
Ooooh yess long time no see Cam!!! Been worth the wait though 😀 fantastic review!!! hope all is well!!! I’ll hope you can come to 🇮🇪 well all this COVID-19& lockdown crap is over!! What front chainrings are on it cam?? My BMC came with 50-34…… really annoying downhill!!
I am a 2018 Propel owner and the SLR One 42 mm Front Wheel does not work for me. It is almost impossible to go down hill at higher speeds as the bike starts feeling wobbly at 55 kph. Replacing the front wheel immediately solved the problem. Heard similar reports from other owners. Hope the new generation of hookless rims is better. Also, Schwalbe is pronounced Shwol-buh (native speaker here).
Native Speaker ? Shwol-buh? Du bist dir sicher das du native bist ? Cam has pronounced it Perfect, just missed an e at the end. Pronounced Like the e when you say end. A real native speaker here.
Cam...as you have now reviewed and rode both the Merida Reacto 8000e and the Giant Propel..which one would you recommend ? Which one do you believe was more compliant ? I am seriously interested in buying the Reacto but now after watching your review of the Propel you have forced me to consider casting an eye over the Propel, even though I must admit the triangular stem on the Propel does spoil the aesthetics of the bike to some extent.
Good job in getting old mate for the sponsor's video. I hope the sponsor watch what you did which is funny and we'll executed. Keep it up! I own Wilier Cento 10 SL. Wheels come with it is super heavy. So manufacturer do expect us to upgrade the wheelset 1st which i did that can only bring it down to 8.2kg with paddles etc. If you have a chance, test the Wilier 10 SL.
Have you ever realised the seat post is slanted at the joint? I did some measurements to confirm it, went back to my giant distributor, they swapped out y seatpost but I still had the same issue
Nice review mate. May I suggest an upgrade in the bicycle weigh bridge location department? Surely there is a low hanging tree branch or something more suited than the twisted ankle waiting to happen couch and brick wall arrangement?? 😄

How are you riding a medium Giant? How tall are you? I'm looking at an ML and wonder if I should bother checking it out if it weighs close to 9 kilos. I wonder if a Propel frame can take Tarmac SL7 components (like stem and wheels)?
@@CamNicholls I see. For some reason I thought you tested a Venge and Tarmac in 56 cm but my memory must be faulty. Thanks. I'd like to try a medium but I think reach would be a problem for me. I'd also like to change the stem on that Propel...so maybe I'll look at framesets or wait for the new Scultura.
Since you were talking about tyres, can this bike fit a 28mm (if yes what brand/model of tyre). 2nd question would be: what aero bikes can fit a 32mm (are there any) ? thank you for all the great videos! PS: what do you think of the 2022 advanced 1 disc with etap rival ?
Great video, Cam! Do you know if it’s still possible to buy the bike in this colour way (black/reflective black)? I’m located in Europe and can’t seem to find it anywhere online 😕
Since you have owned both, can you tell the riding experience between tcr & propel.. they both share the same geometry (only top tube shape difference).. many people torn between 2 when deciding to buy giant.. i personally tried tcr and love it but havent tried propel before..
hey mate - I have both TCR&Propel in the top SL spec frames....Cam is comparing the TCR SL (top spec) Vs Propel(Adv 1 spec - lower grade carbon) - I understand his conclusion as the propel frame is not the same high spec stiff carbon as on his old yellow TCR.....for me I've noticed very little difference between them stiffness wise but the Propel is definitely faster to ride on the flats/rolling....given similar overall bike weights.
Another great review mate. I have a 2018 Defy advanced pro. Came with 25mm AC1s as per this spec. After talking my better half into making a big bike purchase like this for quite some years I was so underwhelmed. I actually wanted to go back to my 2012 azzurri! I totally put the bike’s sluggish and heavy feel down to the bike. Then put some 28mm Vitorria Corsa G+ on. Massive difference ++. New bike feel and one relieved punter👍 But Giant shouldn’t be dragging their excellent bike quality and value down with these rubbish tyres, I don’t get it.
I Think you mention the Giant tires being bad, i have the same bike and cant get those tires to seat onto the rims, what tires do you use on your propel.
Nice review mate.. i am interested for this 2021 model...please can you tell me what is the frame size you bought..is it M/L? and what is your height? thanks
@@CamNicholls thanks for the reply mate...agh found online a M/L one but I'm 1.80cm/85cm inseam and very afraid the size will be big for me..keep the good work and enjoy the nice family
I have road bike with shimano tourney groupset. Its heavier bike.. if I buy this one will that improve my speeed. With my tourney i can reach speed 40kmh easily and average speed is 28-35kmh
GIANT listed Schwalbe Pro One Tubeless tyre in their list of approved tyres for their hookless rims (SLR1 42MM). Is the Schwalbe One compatible with giant's hookless rims? What's the difference between the Schwalbe One from the Schwalbe Pro One?
Hey cam! Love the vids! Bit of an off question but have you broken your collarbone b4? I just have, hit a car and flipped over the bars. I’m shattered! If you have how long did it take you get back on bike? 😊
Hey Simon, thanks for the support. Sorry to hear that, how very frustrating. I have never broken a bone fortunately. Good luck with the recovery and the indoor trainer should be a good way to start getting your fitness back.
Hi Cam i love this kind of content special with your rating break down. Im from Philippines 🇵🇭 and im riding a reacto. There's a new bike in the industry called Devel Project (Philippine brand), its really under rated in terms of the paint, stiffness and the value for money. We would love if you can make a review on Devel roadbikes. I'm really happy with my reacto but I'm thinking to try a Devel Roadbikes. Thank you in advance!
Yes I have heard about this bike. It's in my mind but would be a while off with everything going on. I think Chris Miller Cycling has done some reviews on it.
@@CamNicholls yeah i watched that one with Chris Miller. But i kind of like and respect your contents more, no offense to him. I find no bias with your reviews. Keep up the good work!
I'm actually disappointed on the new drivetrain choice of SRAM rival etap AXS but also more expensive, based on TWD to CAD the 2020 is suppose to be $4400 but new one is $5200
8.6 kg is unbelievavbly heavy mate. Is that down simply to the disk brake system? I own a wilier 110 air, rim brake. 7.08 kg and I reckon I could get it below 7 if needed
Its not the only brand with top tier bikes weighing in this high. I don't know whats going on with the manufactures but are we supposed to just go along with heavier more expensive bikes?
Giant & Trek make their bikes robust compared to Canyon. The Frames can take a huge beating, more material (heavier). That said, a mate got his Giant Propel Advance Disc to +-7.7 KG. He changed the stem & handlebar to a full carbon system, better/lighter tyres, Hunt 50/65 wheels and a couple of things.
Old mate and all the other comedy Cam characters are great, very funny! backwards hat Cam? Seems the Propel is pretty good, but suffers with porky weight like most disc brake aero bikes out there. Can you get a Ridley Noah from FE sports to review? the are up your way.

i wonder would canyon aeroad fall into this category
Yes, they have an equivalent for $5900 AUD, with better wheels
Great video, Cam! Do you know if it’s still possible to buy the bike in this colour way (black/reflective black)? I’m located in Europe and can’t seem to find it anywhere online 😕
Hi i loved the review had a question regarding giant vs specialized tarmac Sl7 and trek slr7 what are you thoughts on these bikes?
Haven’t ridden them! Yet.
What bike sizing you used for this propel?
@@andrewb6541 Which is better in a sprint? Say, from a traffic light stop and back to cruising rolling speed...
I own a Propel.. with a decent pair of tyres, this bike is killing it on flat roads.. fast and furios..
@@hippoace I'm only a 1100W rider but the propel feels stiffer (only a little bit more) than the TCR.
New bike feel and one relieved punter👍
But Giant shouldn’t be dragging their excellent bike quality and value down with these rubbish tyres, I don’t get it.
Thanks for sharing mate and interesting to hear. Yes, I agree. It's strange .
Ibought this same bike 2 years ago never had a puncher these tyres have done over 10 ooo km great bike
I Think you mention the Giant tires being bad, i have the same bike and cant get those tires to seat onto the rims, what tires do you use on your propel.
Hi how do you feel for specialized allez sprint and propel advanced? I m allez sprint owner and thinking to upgrade to propel advanced disc
How do you like Giant bikes are they good quality frames.
How many bikes do you have now Cam?!😀. Ever thought of off-loading a few and get a nice TT rig? You never touched on the TT area yet!
One would say that the Propel Advanced is a 3rd tier bike. The Advanced SL being tier 1 and the Advanced Pro being tier 2.
Their two frame set I should have said
Nice review mate.. i am interested for this 2021 model...please can you tell me what is the frame size you bought..is it M/L? and what is your height? thanks
Medium I bought and I’m 179
@@CamNicholls thanks for the reply mate...agh found online a M/L one but I'm 1.80cm/85cm inseam and very afraid the size will be big for me..keep the good work and enjoy the nice family
Hi! What's your height? Planning to purchase a 2nd hand Propel and it's a Medium Size too
Hmmmm, great video!…. Have you ridden this with the winspace hyper wheels?- I’d be interested in your input with that combo 😉
Coming
Check the pardus robin evo, or pardus spark evo
Cam, what's your fav seat? Do you use the mirror?
Specialized Toupe
I have road bike with shimano tourney groupset. Its heavier bike.. if I buy this one will that improve my speeed. With my tourney i can reach speed 40kmh easily and average speed is 28-35kmh
how is the comfort compared to the reacto
GIANT listed Schwalbe Pro One Tubeless tyre in their list of approved tyres for their hookless rims (SLR1 42MM).
Is the Schwalbe One compatible with giant's hookless rims?
What's the difference between the Schwalbe One from the Schwalbe Pro One?
Yes, it's weight and rolling resistance. Pro One's will go faster but will probably flat easier too.
@@CamNicholls thanks much! Now at least I know of another schwalbe tyre that can be used on the slr1 wheels 😎👍
Mine is 9kg including bottle cages, lights,a mini carbon pump and bike com
Ah yes!!great idea! Thanks for your response Cam! 👍
Good value but the wheels compatibility issue.
Can I fit GP 5000 non tubeless ready on this?
Actually the 2022 is with SRAM components, frame wise it's similar though I'd you guys are interested I can send link of the 2022 list
Yes, I am taking about the frame set. They get updated every year with something new on them.
I'm actually disappointed on the new drivetrain choice of SRAM rival etap AXS but also more expensive, based on TWD to CAD the 2020 is suppose to be $4400 but new one is $5200
more old mate - he keeps it all fun & real
I think timeline wise (3-5yrs) the Propel is due for an update to its frame....maybe next year?
2023 I reckon
What bike computer do you use?
Can you do Venge 2020 also? I think it’ll still come at top.
I’ve already reviewed and missed the ratings boat. As it’s an old bike now I can’t see myself going back there. Sorry.
@cam can you please do a review video on canyon aeroad 🙏
wondering if that comfort comes from the carbon handlebars and stem - noticed a huge improvement when i switched from alu to carbon on my old bmc..
I think it plays a slight factor but there's definitely softness in the frame.
@cam, so the Schwalbe Pro Ones don't work with hookless rims or just those particular rims?
The pro 1’s do work on these rims.
The Pro Ones are the only Schwalbe tyres recommended by Giant.
Have a look at 9:52
is it possible to change those gavia tyres with some tubetype tyres ? like some gp 5000
GP 5000 can't be installed on hookless rims
@@BartKestelyn which tubetype tyres can i mount on then ?
@@ouass5065 I'm afraid hookless = tubeless only
Oh wow there is a tier list of aero frames? Where can one find it?
I don't think there is a list. Some manufacturers create a lower spec'd frame
You really mean that the Propel is much more comfortable as the tcr? How is that possible?
8.6 kg is unbelievavbly heavy mate. Is that down simply to the disk brake system? I own a wilier 110 air, rim brake. 7.08 kg and I reckon I could get it below 7 if needed
Its not the only brand with top tier bikes weighing in this high. I don't know whats going on with the manufactures but are we supposed to just go along with heavier more expensive bikes?
8.6 kg is nearly as much as my XS Giant Contend 2 with Claris
@@timsgarage1861 no. I'm not anyway.
🤣🤣
Giant & Trek make their bikes robust compared to Canyon. The Frames can take a huge beating, more material (heavier).
That said, a mate got his Giant Propel Advance Disc to +-7.7 KG.
He changed the stem & handlebar to a full carbon system, better/lighter tyres, Hunt 50/65 wheels and a couple of things.
Speedplay pedals? Reason being? Should I change from Shimanos??
Not necessarily... I tested both and both are good. prefer the simplicity of Shimano ones
Watch this ua-cam.com/video/tvqvLMcSC4g/v-deo.html
is it ttbike or rb?
hm, perfect timing i'm interested in this bike versus the tcr
Nice one! Hope it helps.
Tcr has the crap gavia tyres you defs want to replace those (source, my manager has a 2021 tcr)
@@leslie7922 i'm planning to just swap the wheels entirely since I have a nice set of HEDs
@@0RANGOTANG wicked, yeah it's good then, youll enjoy it
@@leslie7922 awesome, i'll probably try to pick up one of the last TCRs near me. I like the simple black design so I could add pop elsewhere
Old mate and all the other comedy Cam characters are great, very funny! backwards hat Cam? Seems the Propel is pretty good, but suffers with porky weight like most disc brake aero bikes out there. Can you get a Ridley Noah from FE sports to review? the are up your way.
Love to mate, but I am overwhelmed with bike projects as we speak.
Madone sl6 should fit into this series
