Cousins is 35. When I was growing up, a QB who was 35 was like in the 1% of age bracket. You knew that guy was washed up and done at that point. Now dudes are playing to their 40s while being better conditioned and more explosive. Tendons and ligaments breaking and tearing more seems inevitable. I think the NFL needs to lean harder into being a higher rate of substitution type of game. Larger rosters, and maybe snap count caps per game and per season to limit accrued damage. I honestly think athletes now are just that much better as physical specimens than they used to be. Basically you have a body of rubber bands being pulled super tight by muscles that are trying to make players faster, quicker, and more agile, eventually one of them are going to snap. Hell Dre Greenlaw had a tear just hopping up in down on the sidelines getting "warmed up" to go back in the game during the Super Bowl. That wasn't a turf related tear, that wasn't because he was making a big cut or anything, just a rubber band that eventually gave out.
Muscles and bones can heal much better than connective tissue, and also grow with training much more. There's a reason elite athletes tear tendons and ligaments so much more than regular people, especially athletes like powerlifters whose muscles are near the limits of human development
The playing surface is definitely a thing but exercise science also points to a lack of mobility/flexible strength…these dudes are all super muscular and heavy but a good amount of them probably aren’t spending enough time working on range of motion and strengthening stabilizing muscles around joints. In Rodgers & others cases though, even the best conditioning doesn’t really matter when a 300 pounder jumps on you & adds all their weight to your flexed lower leg.
