802A Unisystem Picking Corn with an Old New Holland Head

  • Since Brennan helped me with the welding on the feeder house, he finally got the opportunity to experience his handiwork. The whole point of the conversion is to share heads with the combine. I don't have time to miss the deere picker with the unisystem filling wagons so fast. Sometimes cleanliness of corn in the wagon is directly related to ground speed. This machine is cramming four rows of corn through a twelve roll husking bed. New Idea made a 16 roll bed... give me a few years. I did check after this load, the trash fan was plugged. oops.

My grandpa picked a lot of ear corn in his day with a Farmall M and a two row mounted New Idea corn picker, can't tell you how many times I rode in the wagons throughout the field! Good times!

We always picked four rows and skipped four then go back in, saves turning so short. Thx for the video !!

Now that brings back some unpleasant memories. Many of our neighbors had these back in the 70's and 80's to pick seed corn for Dekalb. There was a year when LP gas was in short supply and very expensive, so we thought we would fill a few cribs with ear corn. We borrowed a neighbors Uni to try it out, and I got end rows off the field and was at the far corner when I saw smoke. After I got out of the cab, I saw flames coming up around the fuel tank and engine and had to run to the house to get help and call fire department. A hydraulic hose had started leaking and was spraying oil on the hot exhaust manifold. We got it put out but there was a lot of damage to wiring. We decided we were not going to get one and stick with combining our corn. It was an older unit, had a V-6 GMC engine, but not a 2 stroke.

Those v6s were fire prone, the v would build up with leaves.

I remember the neighbors having one of these when I was younger. Neat to see it in action!

My grandfather had a UNI. It was a great day on the farm when it caught fire and burned.

Yeah they ran the 426 in the 8070s also as well as the 7580 4wd, the problem was they were trying to get to much hp out of to small of a motor and they’d over heat and blow the motor, our 8070 has a Cummins 8.3 in it because the first owner blew the motor, the 8.3 is the best thing that happened to it, works great now.

If you put a nitrogen damper in the hydraulic system, it will remove the shocks, which will probably prevent the pump shaft from breaking. I had an issue with a small sweeper where the pump sat directly on the crankshaft, a T-fitting was broken so the damper was not in place for a few days, resulting in a cracked flywheel on the B&S engine.
You see in the video that every time you move the cornhead, a shock goes through the hydraulic system.

It sounds like our Allis-Chalmers 7060s, your right about them being hard starting when it’s cold out, however on our one 7060 cylinder number 1 broke the rings so when I fixed it I had the head worked over and the injectors rebuilt, made a big difference starting when it’s cold out.

Congrats on ridding yourself of the John Deere picker. I have has numerous pieces of John Deere equipment over the years and wasn't impressed with any of them with the exception of a JD 45 and 55 Combine. That Uni System makes sense.

The Deere corn head is better than the original new Holland. But the second generation new Holland corn head got all the kinks worked out.

My 803C depending on where i harvesting at pulling 320 DMI wagons i could keep 2 or 3 guys busy doing 900 bushel per hour but most crib elevators were much slower so that was the holdup most of the time but i had one customer that filled wire cribs with a Kewanee elevator that was by far the fastest . The 803 is at home with a 693 Deere head i did try a 8 row head but needed some more rear ballast and we had to beef up the hydraulic to raise it . I stlll have a New Idea 7 row seed corn head but lack of parts so it will stay hidden in shed

New Idea made the best husking beds. 1 weakness is the replaceable metel husking pins, they were a witch to replace. The stalk material is coming from the head, either wear, adjustments, or stalk condition. The Uni was best suited to pick, the other stuff wasn't in New Idea's wheelhouse. Great video!👍

To get cleaner corn You had to run the 4 row roll head. that stripper head puts too much trash in it. Trouble was that the roll head shelled alot more. Some of Us that ran Unis set another husking bed up at the crib. Drier the fodder the dirtier the corn

    • @boehmfarm4276

I'm thinking about finding another husking bed to setup at the crib.

The extra stuff just adds fiber to the corn, and husks help protect grain from weather.

Folks used to grow and pick a lot of ear corn and sell it to a local feed store that had it's own mill and ground feed for folks. The old man that owned it was crushed in a chute trying to load some cows and the son took it over for a while. The man died and it was sold but didn't last much longer. Mainly cow and hog feed but he would grind anything for you. Sure miss that old mill. You could walk in and smell the sweet feed being ground when they added the pro lix. Yep Saturday was feed day for most folks. Busy on Saturdays...

Hello im a young farmer trying to pick ear corn to sell. Im 20 years old and i picked 2 and a half acres this fall to sell. Im located in northwest Pennsylvania where its not legal to bait deer. I believed ive heard you mention you where from pa as well in some of your videos. I just wanted to ask you what your market looks like? What are your costumes buying ear corn for? It seems like you harvest alot of it so i figured your probably the best one to ask about it. I got the idea of picking ear corn from your channel. Been watching since the old single row ford picker. I appreciate your time. Keep up the good work!

That's the exhaust that was on it. And there's no point in running more stalk through the head than necessary to be just below the ear.
