Not a very receptive audience, I have just watched a 45min talk by John and am now watching this and I know nothing about medicine and only watch bike racing regularly when the TT is on, but I could listen to him talk for hours. He was an absolute pro at bringing humour to a lecture on something extremely serious and is an absolute hero for what he has achieved in his lifetime and for how many lives he has saved. I guess this audience just didn't get his genius, they should have realised they were listening to someone special, a one of a kind. RIP John Hinds.

Wilcofan I'm not arguing that he loved the sport. He had to to do what he did. But he also called it a cruel sport. Verbatim. In the lecture before this one. That's not me speculating. Those are words directly from his mouth. I reckon it's akin to the way tornado chasers feel about what they do. You don't have to be blind to the raw destruction and devastation of a thing in order to feel the exhilaration of being so near it. If anything, understanding the peril only adds to the glory.
From a paramedic who has been to the TT and worked on the injured my hat goes off to a wonderful, caring, professional and talented man. will be missed.
Whenever I despair at the state of humanity, I watch Dr John on here & it always gives me renewed hope. He was a remarkable human being that will forever be loved, respected and hugely missed.
I'm not a doctor, nurse, or paramedic, but this man is one of the biggest inspirations to me that has ever lived. He will be truly missed, and he should without question receive some sort of posthumous honor for the lives he has saved, and arguably is saving now, thanks to getting #HEMS4NI. R.I.P. As an ex Trauma Care Nurse I keep interested in advances in emergency care and only recently became aware of Dr John. What a remarkable man absolutely devoted to pre hospital care and all too tragic he died on his motorbike. RIP
To put John’s life into perspective. He was born ~6 months before I started medical school. Look what he accomplished in such a short time. John had the trait of fearlessness. I don’t. I hate motorcycles. I love fast accelerating cars, but not fast cars. I love flying. But the sky is big and generally very forgiving if treated with respect. There are no hedges with stone walls behind them a few feet away from my airplane. I’m very risk averse. John wasn’t. Yin and Yang. His death was a tremendous loss to all of humanity.
Just Gofish Actually, I have read in the past, that a majority of pilots are afraid of heights. Is that true? I haven’t researched it. I am afraid of heights where everything is static. The edge of a cliff. The highway with no guardrail on the outside of the turn. Because my Dad got me a job at the airport, pumping AvGas during the summers, observing other good and bad pilots, and flying with him quite a bit. I learned to trust the air. Air is a fluid, just like water and it gives you feedback continuously. When you can truly feel that, most of the fear goes away. And any interruption of that feeling triggers immediate negative reactions. I owe my flying instincts to my Dad and Brent Connor. And my observations of what to do. And what not to do around airplanes. RIP, Dad. Mom is in hospice and probably only has a few days left. Soon you will both be together again. I flew in this airplane many times with my Dad and other pilots as an uncertified copilot/autopilot. I was pretty good at it until transporting neonatal premature delivered babies in incubators. I’d get the Beech 18 all trimmed up and flying smoothly, right before the ~300 pound neonatal nurse (an average weight for them) decided to get up and walk forward 5 or 6 feet. Yeowww. Nose up on the elevator trim to hold altitude. I’d just about get it perfectly adjusted before she went back 5-6 feet to sit down. Think of the old WWII movie sounds when a plane was diving to crash. I’m exaggerating, of course. But back on the nose down elevator trim to keep our altitude steady. Here is the airplane I flew with Dad, Brent and others at Mercy Flights in Medford Oregon. Prior to the Doctor Hind's passing I watched a couple of videos featuring his talks and experiences. I then learned he was killed and that hit me like a brick. What a remarkable and passionate person the doctor was, yet delivered his message and experiences whereby anyone could understand and appreciate the work himself and his team performs at these crazy road races like the NW 200 and the TT. I never would have thought the doctor would be a victim of those same roadways he treated so many racers. I hope his team carries on in honor of his work, I'm sure they will.

I've watched this at least three times now over the years. Still as rapt as the first watching. Hats off to those who still do what John Hinds did. And what a fantastic presenter John was. It's a shame his talents (both medical and presenter) now are gone forever. Truly and unsung hero of motorsport.

This man is the person I aspired to be. I had the technical skills to do so many years ago, but I failed to use those skills. I didn’t advance the art of traumatic medical treatment. John didn’t fail. He set a new standard in trauma medicine. I didn’t have the bravery to innovate in trauma medicine as he did. No cricoid pressure? Heresy in my training. Cracking a chest? Totally out of my permitted area of treatment. The world is a better place because John Hinds was here. Because of John, I’m trying to make up for the lost opportunity to help more people. I’m old, out of shape and easily distracted. So I have nothing to lose. I used to tell students. The patient is already dead. You can’t make a mistake that will kill them. All you can do is be aggressive and save their life. So don’t be timid.

The difference was it was Chicago USA whereas another talk he gave was in Europe and lets face it the Europeans have a different perspective on these matters because they have lived and followed street road racing for many years. I think they also have a different way of handling tragedy, or coping with it as you can tell by the Doctor's way of delivery. Not that they are insensitive, far from it, you gotta know the culture.
You guys are real assholes. it's the freakin' mic set up. You can hear some laughter if you turn up the volume and turn down the judgment. If you listen to other events he/they have recorded the audience is quite engaged and responsive = must be the mic set up.

I love the road racing circuit. The tt. Thought I knew a lot about it until I listened to his first 40 minutes slide show I watched last night. I never knew this guy but I feel like I did. Genuine guy here. He died doing what he loved.
The good thing about Covid-19 is that you get to watch great people like Dr Hinds again, a truly great person (RIP). He puts a fabulous perspective on what it means to "Have a life" when we have to sit indoors now for much of it fro everyone's good. Who else achieved his level of academic achievement and performed his role with excellence at 200mph. Celebrate this man. Sure, it would have been great for him to still be with us, but nothing lasts forever.
Dr Hinds and Petracola are not tragic cases in my opinion. Both died doing what they loved. Hinds saved a huge number of lives during his lifetime and Petracola only made it to the Isle of Man TT because of the doc. I envy this type of life.
