    Kamon, back in the day, my father & grandfather only made comb honey. Could not afford an extractor 75 years ago. 35 years ago I was still making comb honey. Now I have an extractor.

    If you remove those supers that have extracting frames now the bees will fill your comb honey supers. If the flow is slowing your comb honey will be sporadic. You want the bees to fill them fast, as slow leads to tougher comb, pollen, and not well filled.

    I used to do a lot of Kelly comb sections. The idea is to fill them fast. We would split hives in early spring, them reunite them just before main flow. Kept them right on the verge of swarming, main honey flow tends to discourage swarming. Throw on the 4 1/2” supers, and pull them off the minute they are capped. If you leave them on, bees stain the cappings with propolis and pollen. We never left the medium honey supers on at the same time, as it discourages the bees from drawing out the sections and filling them. They will fill the drawn comb and build bur comb before drawing out the thin foundation. Cut comb 4 1/2 may be easier to get the bees to work. Comb honey is premium because it is a lot of work, more appealing to the customer, and no honey tastes better than right from the comb. Good luck with it Kamon!

    Kayman, i find that the bees will not cure honey in the center of the first super over a single deep. They seem to purpose that area for more brood. However, the first super over a double deep will be fully utilized by the bees for cured honey. I went back to using double deeps for that reason in most of my hives. Or put your comb honey supers as the second above the excluder.

    If you''re getting pollen in your comb honey add a buffer on top of your bottom deep. Often bees will do this. Using the buffer reduces this from happening.

    Yes Sir,that stuff is Beautiful!
    Harvested comb last year,had medium boxes that weighed close to 60lbs @,58 lbs.
    Hard to sell in small markets. People now days no savvy, or aren't familiar with comb! South Central Michigan location was primarily Black Locust honey, white water white and thick Gorgeous stuff.
    41/8×41/8 boxes @$2.25 bought 100 from Betterbee.Hog half comb looks attractive,smaller boxes but still pricey.
    Don't ya love listening to B.B.
    He's smooth as that Sourwood he produces.

    K&L, thanks again for another fine video! Our honey is darker this year also! It has to be the Tulip Popular. The late freeze we had in March hurt the flow in my area. The sumac is beginning to bloom here. I guess our flows are about the same this year. Last year we had a gigantic mimosa blooming and I’m hoping it’s decent this year. Good luck with that comb honey!

    Working singles this year also and didn't think about checking for swarm cell since the flow started. Good idea to check for that and there continuing to move the honey up. Any ideas if they start filling in the brood box instead of filling up a super?

    Hi Kamon, I know this is kind of off topic, but I have a question regarding cleaning my hive. Unfortunately, my hives both died off during our wet weather here. Likewise, they developed mold inside. Right now, one of them has 50 or so robber bees going to it, which I don’t really mind as I am just keeping bees as a hobby. Anyway, what should I clean my hives with to get the mold off. Thank you for your reply in advance. 😊

    I have a few hives here in the Mid Hudson NY area and as of today (June 1st) some of my hives are honey bound (nectar bound). The queen has little to no place to lay. I spun out a few deep frames and now I have about a gallon of nectar. What can I do with that nectar? Freeze it and feed it back during autumn time? Refrigerate it? Cut it with 1:1 water and feed it back now? Please advise.

    First year beek here. Curious if you add your queen excluder at the time you add the first super? I’m reading that some beekeepers add the first super with no excluder and one frame of brood to encourage the bees to move upward. They add the excluder later, moving the Queen back to lower brood box once good activity is evident above. Insights, advice, experience anyone?

    • @blaahster
      @blaahster Рік тому

      Yes do the second technique, the frame of brood helps them move up
