Take care both of you and stay safe. I used 6 frame nukes tho that in 14 days the ones that mated will be put on a 2 way pallet to grow to wonderful hives
Next week is my queen rearing time. In ‘50’s today. Boxes are bursting with bees. Caught 2 swarms. I have 3 three way mating Nucs plus several nuc boxes. So far so good. Starting 4th year. Let’s see how it goes? Appreciate your videos greatly.
It’s been a few years since I raised my own queen. But the prices of queens is crazy. I may have to pull out the gear and start raising queens again. Check with your local clubs. Become a member. A number of clubs up my way are producing queen cells for their members. One, you get to learn to install queen cells and work backwards to raising your own queens.
Hey Kaymon , recently I purchased one gallon internal frame feeders from Mann Lake . I like this design with the wooden caps with the plastic tube inserts for each hole . The problem is they’re way too tight to use even when one frame is removed from a Mann Lake ten frame hive body . Yet they fit perfectly in their five frame nuc hives after removing one frame . I would hate to think I would have to remove two frames from a ten frame deep hive body also made by Mann Lake. So I decided that these frame feeders will be used to feed my five frame nucleus colonies I’ll be raising next year . I’m already getting stoked for next year , LoL!
You and me both Christian! I have learned a lot this year and plan to do better and have more fun in 2022. Have you looked at the 1.5 gallon mann lake feeder? They take up the space of 2 frames in the top deep but it fits just right without a big or too small gap anywhere.
@@kamonreynolds Have mercy I’d be mixing syrup all day . LoL! I’m going to try the feeders next spring when I start raising multiple five frame nucs and hopefully try to graft a few queens.
Question Kamon, how does having two screens help them not to exchange pheromones? 18:48. I would think pheromones could travel that 1" between them but perhaps it is only direct contact. Thanks.
Totally agree on the three frame mating nucs, they work a treat and help keep everything warmer than the stand alone 3 frames. The two frame nucs to me dont have enough density of bees to keep the brood warm.
If the worker bees fly back to the original hives, how do these nucs take advantage of a nectar flow? All they would have is the frame of honey you put into the nuc and nurse bees to care for the brood.
I don't want the little nucs plugging out with nectar at all. Old bees don't accept queens or cells as easily either. Once the brood emerges out the bees that covered and warmed them will graduate to foragers
In Australia we can buy icing mixture, or pure icing sugar. Icing mixture doesn’t clump/harden unless is gets wet because it has corn starch, pure icing sugar needs to be used ASAP after opening the pack otherwise it turns into a solid hard lump.
Hi Kamon, I’m wondering if you’d make a video for people like me who are not beekeepers but who want to do the right thing by bees in their neighbourhood. What would be helpful is information about using pesticides, growing flowering plants, how to avoid getting stung and what to do if you do get stung, what to do if a swarm shows up nearby, if it is a good idea to put out honey when there’s not a lot of flowers about, how far foraging bees travel from their hive, and anything you think we ought to know. Whatever you’d be willing to put in a video for non-beekeepers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Australia.
Hey Kamon, I'm just reading an article in the Feb ABJ about taking beginner classes and see that he mentioned your videos as some that he likes. Thought you'd like to know (probably some of your friends already told you, I imagine).
Hey Kamon, nice video! I have been having to do this exact thing all week except with swarm cells. Had one hive put cells on 9 frames! Broke that down into 8 Nucs....lets see how they do!
Hi Kamon, Mark here from Au. Over here, powdered sugar (icing suger) does not have corn flour but Icing Mixture does. I blitz normal white sugar in a blender and add glucose syrup to make the bee fondant. Great videos, keep up the good work. I only wish that the price here for wood to make boxes was not 5x the price as it is there. (And that is if we could get it) . Even the foil wrapped bubble-wrap is $285 a roll. I try hard to copy most of your equipment and breeding methods.
Thanks for the comment Mark! I find it fascinating to learn about beekeeping everywhere. Sorry to hear that lumber is so expensive! All the more reason to preserve and take care of what you have to a high level! The food you make sounds like a good mix. Perhaps one day I will be able to find.or make something similar here. Thanks for watching!
The 2 boxes you put the queen cells in: Did those have a queen already and you were just going to let the new virgin queen kill the poorly performing one, or did you already remove the existing one?

Great video. What is your percentage of queens returning from the mating flights? Do you have a video on making the queen cells? Where in Tennessee are you?
Bees make the Queen Cells themselves ! You can make a tiny Wax cup, using a rounded end of dowel, dipped in bees wax, to graft eggs into. These are 'glued on' using a tiny dot of hot wax to attach them to your grafting frame.... Again bees will draw these down to make Queen Cells (look like natural peanut in its shell.) 😏
Kaymon, here in this part of Canada we have a lot of small dearth periods. Do you think there would be much of an issue with not using the foil cover sheet and instead placing a queen excluder on top of the 3x3 nuc, followed by a tall inner cover and a single pail feeder or ceracell feeder on the top servicing all 3 nucs?
Hi Kamon. Thanks for the videos. When I use my queen castle and the virgin has returned a mater queen, how do you get all of the bee out? Of course removing the frames takes the majority. @@kamonreynolds Moved the four queen cells yesterday 8-July-2022. Cells looked beautiful. I grafted 24 and got 4 drawn out and capped 4 days after grafting. Yesterday was 8 days after grafting. Only getting 4 out of 24 I figured I would order a pair of dental binoculars 3.5 power to help me see the real young larvae better. I tried them today 09-July-2022. Was able to see some real little larvae today. Grafted only 8 just to make sure I didn't chill them. I know it is late in the season for northern Minnesota to be grafting and the new queens may not be laying up real well by the time I check them on 4-August-2022 but what do I have to lose right? If I didn't try grafting with my new vision enhancement how can I know if they are the key to my ability to graft successfully right? Not like I am losing bees when I plan to stock the mating boxes with the bees that raised the cells. Those bees will likely be dead by winter anyway. And if nothing else I can shake bees into these new queens from my frame laying queens and try to take them through winter with candy boards right? Kamon is this the right mindset to have?
I let mine lay for 21 days. That is ideal and mot of the queens I raise are for myself OR for nuc customers and they mate in the nuc anyways so it is easy to let them lay 21 before selling
@@kamonreynolds If you install the cell, check in 14 days, and observe that she has already started laying - then how do you figure the 21 days of laying? Just wait 21 days from the 14-day check-in?
I watch a lot of different channels but you're the only person I hear say the term "bee bread". What are you referring to? I haven't heard that term in any other video's. Is there another name for it?
Have you ever tried the Beetle Buster Bottom Board from Bruce Wallace in Australia?... For a commercial bee keeper it is a little pricey... but for the novice like myself... they work great to eliminate the SHB
I haven't tried the guardian jed. Just make sure you don't reduce the colonies entrance down to much and over heat your bees with them. I do sell queens from time to time. Right now I am booked till almost june and then I will start working on making my own
I used to use the cell protectors years ago to and I was asked by a older queen raiser a very direct question so I will pose it to you. "Are you protecting the queen cell from you or the bees you are introducing her into?" Tim
Let me let you in on a secret, it dont work. If they want her dead they will kill her when se walks out the end. I graft 12,000 cells a year and use 6500 myself so I m just giving you some historical advice. Been doing this 38 years. Good luck Tim
The 3% is in your head wev done this on a larger scale of 3500 with protectors and without, statically no diff. We used a smell masking spray on both with and without, so finally we kept the smell masking and threw away the protectors. On 6500 cell we usually run 88.5 -91% . Tim
When there is no queen in the box then the hive has no young larvae to feed and so all the nectar goes to honey. Of course the age of the bees will increase and they will start to die off and dwindle. By requeen on a very strong hive during a strong flow that 2 - 3 week gap with no mouths to feed will give you a lot of honey and give you a brood break and a chance to use OAV to control your mites.
Greetings. I regularly watch your channel. I have a question, whether that cover leaks water, and can it be made from an ordinary plank - board? Also, does syrup spoil when exposed to the Sun? Thanks in advance!
Common practice to ship queens like that but couldn't you ship the queens by adding workers to the cages.if it gets hot during shipping the bees congregate on the wire mesh and overheat the caged queens.
I don't clip the wings but we do keep track of the breeder thru marking and the marking of the colony. We make sure we pull the breeders back so that we don't get them strong enough to swarm
A local bee keeper said that the bees just are not happy with the queen, which happens a lot with package bees. If that is true I think maybe the queen bee's booty wasn't big enough. :-)
Hey DC Rogers. That does happen with package queens somewhat often. There are so many things we just don't know but perhaps she cant produce pheromones right or is laying quite right. Hopefully they will supersede her successfully and the daughter is like usual better

(If it's full, busy, kinda stuffy, then 'some bees think it's time to check out ! )
Do a Split, using Queen Cells, if they are what you see.
If not, take the Queen Cups down (mash them.) Review on your next inspection.
Tip:
Do your inspections every 7 days at this time of Year (eg Swarm Season) that way, you can manage, or break the cycle leading to a swarm !?! 👍
Hope this helps. 🤗

@@ME_MeAndMyBees Pretty sure they are queen cells since they were capped over had the peanut look structure on them
Kamon is it okay to pull queen cells 8 days after grafting and place in nucs?
Yes it is okay to do that!
@@kamonreynolds
Moved the four queen cells yesterday 8-July-2022.
You let them lay for 21 days or you pull them 21 days after dropping the cells?
I let mine lay for 21 days. That is ideal and mot of the queens I raise are for myself OR for nuc customers and they mate in the nuc anyways so it is easy to let them lay 21 before selling
@@kamonreynolds
If you install the cell, check in 14 days, and observe that she has already started laying - then how do you figure the 21 days of laying?
Just wait 21 days from the 14-day check-in?
Do you have to push the cells into comb?
Yes I do just a bit on the small nucs. On the big hives I just hang them between frames.
Bummer. I was going to graft today, but we went from 71 to 32 in 6 hours and 3 inches of snow.
Gee wiz crazy hope this is the last cold spell
@@kamonreynolds I agree. Two years in a row with late April cold weather.
Those will take off quick with all that brood with em

Hello can sombody help ,im in the royal jely proces but the bee hive is just finishing like 5 cups from 50 whats the problem can you help me.
Great video
I watch a lot of different channels but you're the only person I hear say the term "bee bread". What are you referring to? I haven't heard that term in any other video's. Is there another name for it?
When pollen is stored in the Combs they preserve it for long term storage. This is called beebread.
@@kamonreynolds thank you
Have you ever tried the Beetle Buster Bottom Board from Bruce Wallace in Australia?... For a commercial bee keeper it is a little pricey... but for the novice like myself... they work great to eliminate the SHB
Kamon, i am considering purchasing "The Guardian Hive Beetle" entrance device. Have you tried this on any of your hives? ALSO, do you sell queens?
I haven't tried the guardian jed. Just make sure you don't reduce the colonies entrance down to much and over heat your bees with them. I do sell queens from time to time. Right now I am booked till almost june and then I will start working on making my own
I used to use the cell protectors years ago to and I was asked by a older queen raiser a very direct question so I will pose it to you. "Are you protecting the queen cell from you or the bees you are introducing her into?" Tim
The bees I am introducing her to. Even it it ups success by 3% it is well worth it.
Tim
What is that silver wrap that you place on the inside top of the box?
It is called reflectix. It can be gotten at lowes and cut to size. Ants like to build between the lid and inner cover though
When will your queens be for sale to small beekeepers that only need 2-3 queens?
HI , NO QUEEN IN THE HIVE CAN THE BEES STILL BRING HONEY IN . OR NOT FOR THE SUPERS ?
When there is no queen in the box then the hive has no young larvae to feed and so all the nectar goes to honey. Of course the age of the bees will increase and they will start to die off and dwindle. By requeen on a very strong hive during a strong flow that 2 - 3 week gap with no mouths to feed will give you a lot of honey and give you a brood break and a chance to use OAV to control your mites.
@@russellkoopman3004 THANK YOU
Sounds like someone is a bit under the weather...
Kamon I have a question, do you clip your queens like we in Europe and number them for your pedigree records
I don't clip the wings but we do keep track of the breeder thru marking and the marking of the colony. We make sure we pull the breeders back so that we don't get them strong enough to swarm
Kudos on dropping all the dad jokes. 😅
What is the veil you are wearing?
Hey Kamon!!!!! What veil are you wearing in this video!!!?!?!?! Lol
Hey there Kamon thanks again for the videos..Where did you get your veil? Thanks in advance.

Kamon, can I get honey from my package of bees this year if I start them on drawn comb ?
Hard to do in TN further north it is more possible but it all depends on several factors
👍🤗✌💝
What’s that material you use for your innercovers?
A local bee keeper said that the bees just are not happy with the queen, which happens a lot with package bees. If that is true I think maybe the queen bee's booty wasn't big enough. :-)
Hey DC Rogers. That does happen with package queens somewhat often. There are so many things we just don't know but perhaps she cant produce pheromones right or is laying quite right. Hopefully they will supersede her successfully and the daughter is like usual better
We had 2 inches of snow today
