    instead of vacuuming and brushing, why not use compressed air with the vacuum. Like the nossle basically at the entrance of the vacuum at all times, seems like it would work well.

    Hi Darren,
    Greatings also from Slovenia just as Urban. I have been working for 6 years in a car wash, and now for the last 4 years being working as an detailer. Have been watching your videos for queit some time now(have seen almost all in the last 2 years) and I enjoy them in my free time. Thumbs up. I like it that you speak like it really is. Just wanna let you know we are not realy behaind US and we have had Tornador for many years. I personaly have been using the tornador for the last 6 or 7 years and can't imagine a life without it. Urban is probably a bigginer in the industry and doesn't know it that why. I agree with you that with this kind of problem(inposible carpet) one of crucial things is the conversation with the costumer. Thanks god that with years of experiance you switch from low buget cars to more high end cars and a problem like this isn't on a daily basis. Keep up the good work and greatings from Slovenia - Primož L.

    In a VW I just use a vaccum cleaner and go back and forward in a small quick motion. And I do that until all the small sand or dried silt/mud are gone. That's when it looks clean. And then I use a small moist, not wet, terrycloth with a light touch and a bigger and quick motion. On the terrycloth I use a dry degreaser/fabric cleaner. Excellent result every time! Never let a carpet soak or use pressurized air! That will push some dirt down deeper into the carpet!

    Great information!! I personally avoid the word "perfection" - because any small missed area/spot means it's NOT perfection - I feel it sets the bar too high...unless of course you are charging a LOT and spending all the time you need to achieve "perfection"
    E.g. If you quote $300 and call the finished result "perfection", the client may look at the paintwork and say 'Hey! The swirls are still there!"....or look at the wear on the floor mats and say "Hey, my mats still look faded/dirty! You said this would be done to perfection and I'm paying a lot of money" - Even though we all know that $300 is not enough for paint correction and no amount of cleaning will fix worn mats. Let's face it, some people will feel that $300 is a crazy amount of money and will expect TRUE perfection for that...unreasonable people LOL
    I prefer the term "thorough detail" - or you could put it in terms of the amount of time you can allocate to the cleaning ...for the price quoted

    To use the boxing analogy, I give the carpet the one, two punch. I don't have the fancy gadgets like a generator for compressed-air or even the $150 Tornador thang. I do have Costco tho' and they sell the canned air to clean keyboards. As I vacuum I simultaneously hit problem areas with the canned air as it gets sucked up. Just quick shots not the whole can, If that doesn't KO the dust/dirt particles then step up to the leaf blower method as Darren describes. Agitation and suction combined are your best friends.

    I like Armor All glass cleaner, the car care products they have is quite nice.
    They may be on the middle area, but they don't have 50 products of All purpose cleaner and claim it to be different things like the chemical guys do... I have been using their car wash with turtle wax and it seems to be doing a good job... my car is 20 years old, been a fleet car, then spent 15 years in rural Australia... so you can get an idea on my expectations and this actually satisfies me because, it's better than dish soap, it gets the job done and doesn't increase the damage.
    I don't own an expensive car, just something I picked up for a grand and the paint is in fair condition for the price of the car, you seen swirl marks... and then there's paint cracking under the clear coat, clear coat peeling up and some areas have bog and somehow they managed to do a clean job with plaster (yes, plaster, how they kept the paint from lifting is a skill)
    So... no I'm not going to spend $120 per month on perfect treatment, no I am not doing a respray and polishing it, I care more about maintenance than it sparkle sparkling, but I love my cars clean to the point where it has no smell, no crud stick somewhere and all the buttons work because it is clean... I will not break the budget on having a clean home, I use floor cleaner and ammonia, cheap as chips and cleans the home - I pay enough in registration, I don't want to pay the same amount to clean my car

    Poor mans compressed air is a reduction nozzle and hose for the exhaust of a shop vac. If the standard hoses weren't so inflexible, you could blow and suck simultaneously. The thinner exhaust hose fixes that, with a small decrease in vacuum

      Ethan Reinsch clean the carpet only with the Tornador. Use a steam cleaner or just any all purpose cleaner to clean other surfaces. Start with the carpet and move to other sections. After you done vacuum the carpet again if you find any small dirts. Good luck

    I call that kind of carpet either felt carpet, or truck loner material. In my Durango that stuff is in the very back section of the truck, and on the backs of the seats, so that when they fold down, the same material makes one big flat cargo area carpeted in the stuff. I definitely find it hard to remove hair from, hair is the worst thing to get out of that stuff. Personally I tend to go for getting the most powerful vacuum cleaner I can get, and then using a crevice tool on the end of the hose with a lot of scrubbing to get it, it all comes out, but takes about 3 times the work at the regular carpet thats all over the floor.

    I've discovered when working with animal and human hair stuck in carpeting, floor mats and seats that packaging tape or duct tape works wonders in pulling the hair off the surface or out of the fibers. Just wrap your hand a couple of times and away you go. It is time consuming but does an awesome job. Thanks for another great video....

      +Randy Morlan for hair I've noticed just wearing nitrile gloves and running my hand along the carpet gets the hair well. I can "comb" over the carpet with my fingers and end up with a fist full of hair. I have a great vacuum and even have the Vacmaster air driven attachment with a beater bar made for hair. The brand of my gloves is "Venom Steel" from Lowes, but I bet that doesn't matter as long as they are nitrile. The latex ones don't pick up anything and wear holes almost instantly. It's worth a try, I'd love for any good/bad feedback on my accidental discovery.

    Darren,
    I've watched enough of your videos that I think I know you pretty well.
    I know that you know the correct words. When you say keen instead of key and contacts instead of context it's obvious that you are very,very tired.
    The most important tool in your arsenal is yourself. You cannot do first quality work when your body isn't getting the maintenance it needs.
    So, give yourself a break, and let the videos go for a while. Take a real vacation.

      +P Schmied Incredibly intuitive and observant. Often the words to not record onto the video as they should. When I am editing them, it is very frustrating as I hear that my words have been "reformatted" due to a poor mic on my camera. As I say...."a work in progress" And when I took that real vacation in Oahu this past summer, the one my wife has been talking me into for the past 8 years, all I wanted to do was stay.....but thanks for the empathetic words.

    hey darren thanks for the vid.
    I live in Phoenix az and I am a mobile detailer. I start my prices at $180 for interior and it goes up from there. a lot of people say its a lot of money but I dont. I have spend 5 hours with a partner doing the inside of a nissan and charged so little. like $ 100.

    • @MRJM17
      @MRJM17 8 років тому

      +HeartBreakKid5231 Been there ... I'm @ $125 currently but will most likely raise soon. But I think as Darren states its about setting expectations. I've taken work just to take it and also honor my price. Then you get onsite and it looks like someone has literally lived in their car for years.
      As opposed to saying, "Mr. Customer this is going to take more time, and I need to charge $200 blah, blah, blah"
      Or more importantly giving them a range on the phone and explaining why. I just honor the price and spend way too much time trying to perfect. Oh well live and learn. But I think as Daren has stated, one has to set the expectations before getting there. At the very least, speak up if the work is too much for the price that was quoted.

    On average how long does it take you to do your basic and gold details? I would be curious about your platinum detail as well but im sure that can vary alot more.

    • @autofetishdetail
      @autofetishdetail  8 років тому

      +Matthew Zydorczyk Really it is all about how much I am trying to clear an hour. Which my range is $80-$100 for detailing, and $100-$120 for paint correction or paint enhancement. (Basically any time I use a buffer) So if I charge $250-$300 for a car, you can do the math as to how long it might take. Most cars take between 3-4 hours if I am by myself. But as you noted, every situation or car is different.

    I have been waiting for this video since forever!! I can't believe I satthrough the whole thing.Thank you Darren as always! Also after and during washing car how do you take care of the water runoff that might be contaminated and go into drains/sewers? I know that it varies state by state.

    • @autofetishdetail
      @autofetishdetail  8 років тому

      +Integrafreak1 You are correct...it varies state to state. California is about as bad as it gets for regulation. But since I work in neighborhoods 98% of the time, the laws and the ability to enforce the laws make neighborhoods an ideal way to stay off the grid. I do a lot of waterless detailing and I also have a little kept secret to working around this. This secret makes me even more profitable, while also allowing me to remain compliant with many of the laws. As time goes on and I am able to catch-up on all my projects going on, I will begin to make available some of my most guarded secrets to being as profitable as possible. Sorry to tease you like this, but I have to pick my battles very carefully these days as I am so limited on time. ( Ironic based on the length of some of these videos huh?!! )

    Darren, I totally agree with you about posting your prices. Because without at least a starting price people instantly think somethings wrong. When a customer calls you without looking at your site its because getting to know you is more important than picking from a random site out of hundreds. In other words they want to be sold on why they should go with you. Lets face it most detailers are premadonnas that really only know how to make the car look great until it goes through the next wash and all the cheap fillers wash off. Finding out what the customer really wants and expects can literally can make you or break you. Good job, nice video.

    +Auto Fetish... Hey Darren... Did you put some of the Armoral glass cleaner in your hair? Seem to have pinkish hue today. Ah yes the Mother of all Carpets. Your spot on mate. Most customers have called in a detailer because they have already tried to vacuum this carport and ended up needing therapy. The hard part for us detailed is we want to have spotless results. Ain't gonna happen with Mother of all Carpets. Compromise is the only way for both parties to keep their sanity.

    How will u deal with all this rain here in California?

    • @autofetishdetail
      @autofetishdetail  8 років тому +1

      +Dorian Casasola I don't; I simply accept it and am grateful we don't have to deal with actual weather that most guys around the country have to deal with. Freezing temps, snow, hail, sleet, etc., etc. We are pretty spoiled here!

    I try advertising my detailing business on a local Facebook group, but I'm often not selected because of my prices. My prices are very reasonable, actually too low because I am trying to build clientele. $80 for a wash, clay bar, wax, then a complete interior plus rims and tires. Then theres kids that advertise "Detailing" for $30, well it's just a wash and vacuum but people don't know the difference so they end up spending the $30 instead of $80. Frustrating.

    • @IXIslimjimIXI
      @IXIslimjimIXI 8 років тому

      There will always be those lowball people who cant really detail who price their services cheap. Try craigslist, instagram, snapchat, etc reaching out on many different medias. And make "Specials." Call it your Complete exterior special and include wash, clay, and wax to get that reflection and butter smooth feeling, dress up the tires and clean up the rims 80$. Same as interior etc....some people will always choose those cheaper services but honestly you dont have to deal with the customers because those are the ones that expect more than the realistic approach like darren talks about...know when to walk away.

    • @TyTyson98
      @TyTyson98 8 років тому

      I (age 17) would do a $30 option for people, but I would call it a "Exterior, Wheels, & Dry" or "Wash & Dry," but I would not call that a detail. I wouldn't call it an interior detail unless I'm busting out a toothbrush to scrub the little nooks and crannies along with cleaning the pedals. I wouldn't call it an exterior without doing something to the car beyond washing it.

    • @IXIslimjimIXI
      @IXIslimjimIXI 8 років тому

      @tyTyson98-I have been detailing for a long time and have never busted a toothbrush for an interior detail (I do however have a set of brushes i use) but even though those 30$ option sound intriguing, upsell it to make money, being mobile = Time + Gas + product which all cost you money, factoring all that with average prices will make the money. complete interior can run around 80-200$ depending if its general cleaning to a complete soccer mom mishap, you will start knowing what to charge depending what you see. At age 17 you can do some great work as long as you know what your doing and build that trust with clients to have them keep coming back for more or recommend you.

    • @TyTyson98
      @TyTyson98 8 років тому

      I completely forgot about the whole mobile aspect of it. I say $30 thinking if someone parked in my driveway and asked me to clean their car. I guess that price would very depending on how far I would have to go, or I would have to figure out a higher flat rate from coming out and doing the $30 one I had in mind. I haven't done any detailing outside of our 3 cars, but I would like to do it to help make some more money especially since I'm at a lull in my work schedule until October. Right now I am only good for basic wash and dry, vacuum, wipe down the dash and seats. I would be willing to do some waxing, but that would require some backing to it or someone willing to pay enough to cover the expense of everything I would need. The other challenge is that it is so hot right now, I don't even want to wax my own car.
      I use the toothbrush to help clean out pedals of the car, and this stupid little coin holder that I can't fit anything else in.

      I advertise in these groups too. I do English and Spanish ads. I try up to 20 groups, often 10 times a week. my average call is $120 sedans (interior + wash, quick wash) Suvs $180.

    sounds like a mechanic should do half a job on a basic cheaper car? if anyone is paying your prices, you should keep to the same standard and be honest to the customer, if you can't remove it, say so, not because its a cheap car. this is stupid and i know plenty of people that do detailing on stupidly expensive cars to cheap cars, its no difference to them. you may do a good job thats worthy of the prices, bout never look down on people with normal cars just because you can't be bothered to work on doing the possible, everyone else i know can do it! unsubscribed!

    fyi ... on ur site you charge $150 for entry level detail. :)

    • @autofetishdetail
      @autofetishdetail  8 років тому +1

      +Mr2pacforya Yes. Although I am unsure as to why you are questioning this or stating this. With that said, I added that entry level pricing about a year ago, and have had exactly one person since then actually request that level of service. I am going to remove it as it was part of "testing" I was doing. It clearly revealed what I already thought and was wanting to verify my hypothesis. Perhaps I will find the time in the near future to remove it and make a few other changes to my pricing page.

    • @MRJM17
      @MRJM17 8 років тому

      +Auto Fetish Detail i was stating it as i believe in your vid you said your entry level detail starts @ $250. however, on site entry level is $150. in any case, good to know you're charging $250 for entry level detail as i think that makes what we do worthwhile.

    How long did it take you to go from entry level cars to high end? How did you do the change? Raise your prices?

    • @autofetishdetail
      @autofetishdetail  8 років тому

      +David Ellefson About 22 years. I could have accelerated that process if I knew then, what I know today. Part of what I am trying to teach people like yourself. And raising prices is always a difficult thing; not necessarily with new customers, but with repeat customers. There are ways, and it is worthy of its own video. These couple questions is a long ripple effect of additional questions and answers. Demographics of your actual area of service is only one of many huge factors of this.

      It takes about 1 minute to remove the cone that is on your standard Tornador black and put this vacuum attachment on. Plug your wet vac in the place provided and you have a tool that works better than any $2000 carpet extractor I have seen. Make a pass with liquid on then a pass with liquid off and it is beautifully clean carpet that is 95% dry.

      +Viral Awakening Looks like Bert Keller below nailed it....jack off sign! I think he is a self promoting, blow-hard, sucking the life out of a very serious tipping point for this country. Sure, every one can embrace the brash, bold, call-it-like-it-is kinda of non-conformist that he is, but he lacks true constitutional values and I think he will be a white Obama if he gets in. Endless executive orders and new ways of circumventing the constitution....not that I have an opinion. Ted Cruz is my man.....
