You should of, or should try the VSS Swirl remover. You skip all those those steps. I wet sanded the paint and used VSS(one pass), the paint looks like glass. Amazing

I just ordered a PC Kit with hex pads including P40 polish, V7, ez cream glaze. I also ordered a red pad, carnauba (110 & 111) wax and a light final polish. This exceeded my budget but its a one time purchase. I have a black Tahoe and I want to work out the major defects and make it look sexy (not perfect). I rubbed on a coat of cheap wax and it was an improvement but want to do a better job and I found some real issues with the paint job the dealer put on the truck.
This is the route I typically take with my black car. Wash (Two bucket with Mr. Pink) > Clay Bar > V36 > V38 > Black-light > Jetseal 109 > Pete's 53 (two coats) > Hybrid V7 wipe down.
Blacklight can be used if you have light swirls. It will go over them and cover them. You can then put a sealer on top or just use a compound to remove the swirls. There is a blog out there where a guy covered swirls with blacklight and it looked perfect.
Thanks for the great chart. Some questions. 1. Can a Good Paint consist of swirl? If so, should the steps go from Swirl Remover > Finishing Polish as well? 2. Can Swirl Remover & Finishing Polish uses a DA Polisher to do its job? 3. Once the paint reaches Good Paint, can we do a light all-in-one polish on a monthly basis without thinning the clear coat?
Do you guys have a kit that includes all this? If not then that would be something to look into. It seems like you have a plethora of products and I'm new to detailing so it would take me some time to research and pick everything that I'd want. If you had a link to a kit that maybe had drop down bars that including all the same products for that step or even just a fixed product to remove the hassle of putting custom choices together that would be awesome. One package could be for bad paint, another for moderate and another for good, and so on. Really give it some thought for an all in one full detail kit with everything you need for every step, excluding all the accessories like foam gun, microfiber towel, etc or maybe another kit with all the accessories needed for each step. That is something I'd definitely purchase because it would be much easier then researching all your productions on and off your website to put together a kit for a step process like this chart. If you see this then awesome if not then I'll probably still purchases all my detailing goodies from you, but from a customers point of view you do have a vast amount of products which honestly looks quite over whelming which makes it hard to choose.
so say you do this from start to finish. when do you need to do it all over again? how often do I need to strip the wax off and start with the sealer step?
SwiftTone I know this is an old post, but for those that are still wondering... Only clay when the paintwork feels tough to touch, there is no reason to clay if your paintwork feels smooth (there really is no benefit). compound or polish if you have scratches, like the clay, no need if the paintwork doesn't need it. I use paste wax every 4-6 months, but I use spray wax after every wash.
how do you maintain it. after the paint has been restored and has wax on it ect. and i want to wash it a week after.. when i wash can i use quick detail do i throw another layer of wax on? sorry if you already adresed this i cant seem to find an answer anywhere.

Can I use the V38 to Polish the car after a wash, and then use Sealant and Wax when I don't need to use the other 3 because the paint is in good shape?

Hi Sinue, good question. We recommend using JetSeal to protect your headlights from yellowing and fading from harsh UV sunlight. The only product that is going to protect your headlights from scratching as well as yellowing is Carbon Flex C9. Carbon Flex C9 is a protective coating that will harden once applied to your vehicle, creating a glossy shell that will protect your car for up to 36 months. I have CG Blacklight and CG Vertua Bond 408. Do i use CG Vertua bond 408 before using CG Blacklight or is both the product for the same purpose?? Thank u
Do all of Chem Guys glazes have cleaners in them? I ask because a few times a year when my car needs not polishing/paint correction, I like to do a mini detail consisting of washing, claying, paint cleaning maybe a glaze, the seal and/or wax. For my paint cleaning, I like to use an All in One product which leaves a nice base. However, if the glaze has cleaners, my guess is it would remove that base so might as well skip that step.

So moderate paint you could use vss on, right? I believe this video was done before vss was released. Not sure where it fits in. I know you guys have said the cutting component falls between v34 and v36 but polishes out like v38
Depends on how much experience you have and what the condition of the car is. An experienced detailer can move much faster than a newb just becasue he/she has learned how to be more efficient. The condition of the car can make a difference in a few ways. I detailed a car with so much bonded contaminant that claying to almost as long as polishing it. Also, paint with heavy swirls/marring could require more than one compounding step. If this is your first detail, assume most of the day.

I need to clean up an old 1994 green SUV for my girlfriend's son as a high school present. The vehicle's paint is very, very dull (oxidized) and has never been clayed, waxed or detailed. Saw your "flow chart" on detailing, but the paint on this vehicle is much worse than the "bad paint" in the video. Should I heavy clay it then use a strong compound followed by a lighter compound then wax etc. OR do I need to use something first BEFORE I compound to restore the oxidized, very dull paint ?! Thx

I have a brand new 2018 black 1500 chevy, only 2 washes but I can see swirls. Is it considered good paint? What steps do you recommend I have one week with it!!!
Hi Sinue, new cars often come with swirls and scratches due to improper washing from the dealer or from transportation. The only thing that will get rid of scratches and swirls is polishing. As you have already seen, black cars and trucks are extremely susceptible to showing any imperfection to the paint, so after performing a complete detail, you might want to consider coating your car with Carbon Flex C9. Carbon Flex C9 will coat your car in a hard shell that will help reject scratches. Waxes and sealants will offer protection from water, UV rays, bugs, etc, but they will not reject scratches. Besides Carbon Flex C9, just remember to use best car washing techniques such using the 2 bucket method, using a chenille microfiber mitt, washing from top to bottom, etc. in order to avoid installing new scratches and swirls to your paint. We also recommend applying a glaze, which will fill in minor scratches and swirls, but keep in mind that it is only temporary and the only thing that will actually remove them is polishing. I'm going to leave a few links below so you can learn more about using both Carbon Flex C9 and also glazing your car. For those of us who got took at the dealership with Zurich shield. Can I still do the steps in the flow chart or should I remove what ever that stuff is the dealer put on?
Can it be used on glass coating? i am a newbie. After glass coating can i apply Jetseal 209 and then Blitz to finish it off or is it the other way round.. thanks in advance for any feedback.
The tools you will need are: -A polisher examples are the Porter Cable, Flex, etc. -Pads for your polisher. Cutting pads, polishing pads and finishing pads. -Some type of quality washing media such as lambs wool wash mitts or microfiber wash products. Either are fine. -Some type of applicator for the sealant or wax, I like microfiber. -The video says do not use wash as your clay lubricant. If you would to minimize your initial cash outlay, using soap the first time is OK, I have done so.
Hello So I wana detail my car exterior, and Im stuck right now with Over the counter products. I have had some luck with McGuires stuff. I want to compound and polish and wax. But Im not sure what tools to use such as what kind of pad for each step? And also Im removing medium oxidation not to bad. So any help I would greatly appreciate it. Also once I get the paint to where I want it should I use a sealant then wax?
If I'm going through this detailing process is it ok to break this into a few weekend jobs? V36 & V38 one weekend and sealant & wax another weekend. Obviously washing the car each weekend.
Hey Bryan, we highly recommend performing the full detail all in one day. Once you polish your car, you are opening up the paint. As soon as you take it out of your garage, all kinds of stuff could go into those pores. The purpose of sealant is to create a protective barrier, so without it, your freshly polished paint is vulnerable to whatever contaminants are floating around the air. If you wait 1 week, you will be sealing all those contaminants into your paint! Sealing your car with JetSeal should't take too long, it's a simple spread on, bond, and buff off formula. You could use your DA machine for even faster application. You could also use an all in one product to speed up the process to help you finish the whole process in one day! How much time and money are you willing to put into it? If you are willing to go all out, the products you will need: -A quality wash -Clay -A compound (I am assuming the paint has swirls to justify a compound?) -A medium polish which this video calls a swirl remover -A finish polish to get the paint as close to perfect as possible -A sealant or wax Above is what you need and what I would start with. I did mention the tools you will need because I am running out of characters.

Hi Sean, If the paint is good, you definitely don't want to be doing too much on it because then you might be doing more harm than good. Keep it light and work your way up until you reach the results you are satisfied with. There's a saying: less is more. The less you do to achieve great results, the better. Hi there, I would like to do entire process on my car. 2 weeks ago I cleaned my car with a maguairs waterless wash and wax spray. Can I use your eco smart waterless car wash and then clay it and continue with the rest of the detail process? Or would I have to use something else to strip the old wax off before claying? If I can use eco smart, will I get great results?
Hi! Yes, EcoSmart is an entire car wash in a bottle! You can wash your car with EcoScmart and then proceed with the subsequent advanced detailing steps such as claying, polishing, sealing, and waxing. Claying should strip off all the old wax and sealant, however, you could use a product like Wipe Out if so desired to ensure every last bit of wax is off. Hi! The soap you use will depend on your end goal. If you are looking to do a full detail including polishing and have some old wax and sealant remaining on your paint, then you will want to use Clean Slate to get those old coatings off. If you are looking to just do a weekly maintenance wash, you will want to use a ph balanced soap which will not strip your wax or sealant coating. Thanks for watching the video. The product that comes with the clay bar is the clay luber. The clay luber acts as an anti abrasive lubricant to help the block glide against the car. What you want to use is something like P40 to wipe the vehicle down after polishing, or waxing to remove excess product that gets left behind.
ive been working ar a service washer at an acident repair centre as well as full valeting and detailing. my 1st step is to wash the car in soap including wheel arches and underside. add chemicals to clean alloy. open all door and boot checks apply tfr traffic film remover. start jetting from roof to floor all window seal joins between bupers n wings. jet off door checks and boot check. open bonnet and clen underside thourghily. the drying car with microfiber clothes then remove all bugs road tar and blemishes with tar and glue remover. 1nce bodywork complete full car hovered including seat runners. Remove seats ( if leater conditioner at extra change and all interior parts possible seats removed and cleaned with shampoo machine we clean boot. roof linning. and seats. additional charge for bad gog hair. clean all windows and plastics to complete interior clay bar car if nesiresry. add g3 and cut full car. then 3m glaze full and coloured clothes to remove exese glaze. finally use ultafina and coloured clothes to remove residue. if 4rth coat polish requidred was coating is an extra charge pounds blast down the car to remove any compounds and chamoix dry wheel shine
Can you use water with the clay? I like to wash the vehicle down and then before I dry it go over the paint with the clay spraying the vehicle the whole time. I never really liked using the lubricant with the clay bar, especially on hot sunny days when the lubricant dries really fast and the paint gets hot.

what glaze, sealant/wax, and spray wax would you recommend to make a white pearl paint look the best?
I use white light and white wax followed by Hybrid V7 Optical Select High Gloss Spray Sealant on my '09 Audi a5 get complements on it frequently :)

Where and when do you apply Ceramic coating in these steps? I’d like to use a polymer sealant over the coating to create a net over the coating.

Hi Sinue, good question. We recommend using JetSeal to protect your headlights from yellowing and fading from harsh UV sunlight. The only product that is going to protect your headlights from scratching as well as yellowing is Carbon Flex C9. I have CG Blacklight and CG Vertua Bond 408. Do i use CG Vertua bond 408 before using CG Blacklight or is both the product for the same purpose??

Do all of Chem Guys glazes have cleaners in them? I ask because a few times a year when my car needs not polishing/paint correction, I like to do a mini detail consisting of washing, claying, paint cleaning maybe a glaze, the seal and/or wax. For my paint cleaning, I like to use an All in One product which leaves a nice base. However, if the glaze has cleaners, my guess is it would remove that base so might as well skip that step.

OK this may be a stupid question but what is Black Light? Is it a glase or is gloss enhancer or a sealant? At what point on the flow chart would you apply Black Light? Do I still need to apply a glase if using Black Light?
Can you use the vss if the paint is bad? And as the swirl removal and finishing polish.

Depends on how much experience you have and what the condition of the car is. An experienced detailer can move much faster than a newb just becasue he/she has learned how to be more efficient. The condition of the car can make a difference in a few ways. I detailed a car with so much bonded contaminant that claying to almost as long as polishing it. Also, paint with heavy swirls/marring could require more than one compounding step. If this is your first detail, assume most of the day.
I believe Black Light is also a sealant. Use the EZ Creme Glaze before JS 109 or Black Light

I need to clean up an old 1994 green SUV for my girlfriend's son as a high school present. The vehicle's paint is very, very dull (oxidized) and has never been clayed, waxed or detailed. Saw your "flow chart" on detailing, but the paint on this vehicle is much worse than the "bad paint" in the video. Should I heavy clay it then use a strong compound followed by a lighter compound then wax etc. OR do I need to use something first BEFORE I compound to restore the oxidized, very dull paint ?! Thx
if the vehicle ( car & motorcycle ) is brand new & fresh out of the dealer , does it need V36 & V38 for maximum shine & protection before applied Vertua Bond and Glaze , Sealant & Wax after that ??! ...

Hey Drew! Absolutely, wax enhances shine but more importantly it adds a layer of protection against harsh elements.
I have a brand new 2018 black 1500 chevy, only 2 washes but I can see swirls. Is it considered good paint? What steps do you recommend I have one week with it!!!
Hi Sinue, new cars often come with swirls and scratches due to improper washing from the dealer or from transportation. The only thing that will get rid of scratches and swirls is polishing. As you have already seen, black cars and trucks are extremely susceptible to showing any imperfection to the paint, so after performing a complete detail, you might want to consider coating your car with Carbon Flex C9. Carbon Flex C9 will coat your car in a hard shell that will help reject scratches. Waxes and sealants will offer protection from water, UV rays, bugs, etc, but they will not reject scratches. Besides Carbon Flex C9, just remember to use best car washing techniques such using the 2 bucket method, using a chenille microfiber mitt, washing from top to bottom, etc. in order to avoid installing new scratches and swirls to your paint. We also recommend applying a glaze, which will fill in minor scratches and swirls, but keep in mind that it is only temporary and the only thing that will actually remove them is polishing. I'm going to leave a few links below so you can learn more about using both Carbon Flex C9 and also glazing your car. Hi. Can i "clay" with a karcher steamer?
For those of us who got took at the dealership with Zurich shield. Can I still do the steps in the flow chart or should I remove what ever that stuff is the dealer put on?
what about wiping polishing residue off with IPA or an alternative and pre wash, detar / fallout removers?

Can it be used on glass coating? i am a newbie. After glass coating can i apply Jetseal 209 and then Blitz to finish it off or is it the other way round.. thanks in advance for any feedback.
The tools you will need are:
-A polisher examples are the Porter Cable, Flex, etc.
-Pads for your polisher. Cutting pads, polishing pads and finishing pads.
-Some type of quality washing media such as lambs wool wash mitts or microfiber wash products. Either are fine.
-Some type of applicator for the sealant or wax, I like microfiber.
-The video says do not use wash as your clay lubricant. If you would to minimize your initial cash outlay, using soap the first time is OK, I have done so.

Hello So I wana detail my car exterior, and Im stuck right now with Over the counter products. I have had some luck with McGuires stuff. I want to compound and polish and wax. But Im not sure what tools to use such as what kind of pad for each step? And also Im removing medium oxidation not to bad. So any help I would greatly appreciate it. Also once I get the paint to where I want it should I use a sealant then wax?

If I'm going through this detailing process is it ok to break this into a few weekend jobs? V36 & V38 one weekend and sealant & wax another weekend. Obviously washing the car each weekend.
Hey Bryan, we highly recommend performing the full detail all in one day. Once you polish your car, you are opening up the paint. As soon as you take it out of your garage, all kinds of stuff could go into those pores. The purpose of sealant is to create a protective barrier, so without it, your freshly polished paint is vulnerable to whatever contaminants are floating around the air. If you wait 1 week, you will be sealing all those contaminants into your paint! Sealing your car with JetSeal should't take too long, it's a simple spread on, bond, and buff off formula. You could use your DA machine for even faster application. You could also use an all in one product to speed up the process to help you finish the whole process in one day! How much time and money are you willing to put into it? If you are willing to go all out, the products you will need:
-A quality wash
-Clay
-A compound (I am assuming the paint has swirls to justify a compound?)
-A medium polish which this video calls a swirl remover
-A finish polish to get the paint as close to perfect as possible
-A sealant or wax
Above is what you need and what I would start with.
I did mention the tools you will need because I am running out of characters.
With my v36 and v38 should I use an orange or yellow pad?

Hi Randy! Use the Black Hex-Logic Pad on the lowest speed setting to spread a fine coat of glaze, sealant and/or wax with a machine polisher.
Is it possible to wash and clay a car with 'Good Paint' to prevent any scratches turning it into 'Medium Paint' ?

If the paint is good, you definitely don't want to be doing too much on it because then you might be doing more harm than good. Hi there, I would like to do entire process on my car. 2 weeks ago I cleaned my car with a maguairs waterless wash and wax spray. Can I use your eco smart waterless car wash and then clay it and continue with the rest of the detail process? Or would I have to use something else to strip the old wax off before claying? If I can use eco smart, will I get great results?
Hi! Yes, EcoSmart is an entire car wash in a bottle! You can wash your car with EcoScmart and then proceed with the subsequent advanced detailing steps such as claying, polishing, sealing, and waxing. Claying should strip off all the old wax and sealant, however, you could use a product like Wipe Out if so desired to ensure every last bit of wax is off. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!

Hi! The soap you use will depend on your end goal. If you are looking to do a full detail including polishing and have some old wax and sealant remaining on your paint, then you will want to use Clean Slate to get those old coatings off. If you are looking to just do a weekly maintenance wash, you will want to use a ph balanced soap which will not strip your wax or sealant coating. Thanks for watching the video. The product that comes with the clay bar is the clay luber. The clay luber acts as an anti abrasive lubricant to help the block glide against the car. What you want to use is something like P40 to wipe the vehicle down after polishing, or waxing to remove excess product that gets left behind.
ive been working ar a service washer at an acident repair centre as well as full valeting and detailing. my 1st step is to wash the car in soap including wheel arches and underside. add chemicals to clean alloy. open all door and boot checks apply tfr traffic film remover. start jetting from roof to floor all window seal joins between bupers n wings. jet off door checks and boot check. open bonnet and clen underside thourghily. the drying car with microfiber clothes then remove all bugs road tar and blemishes with tar and glue remover.
1nce bodywork complete full car hovered including seat runners. Remove seats ( if leater conditioner at extra change and all interior parts possible seats removed and cleaned with shampoo machine we clean boot. roof linning. and seats. additional charge for bad gog hair. clean all windows and plastics to complete interior clay bar car if nesiresry. add g3 and cut full car. then 3m glaze full and coloured clothes to remove exese glaze. finally use ultafina and coloured clothes to remove residue. if 4rth coat polish requidred was coating is an extra charge pounds
blast down the car to remove any compounds and chamoix dry wheel shine
Can you use water with the clay? I like to wash the vehicle down and then before I dry it go over the paint with the clay spraying the vehicle the whole time. I never really liked using the lubricant with the clay bar, especially on hot sunny days when the lubricant dries really fast and the paint gets hot.
