I've owned one of these for about four years now, and I've tried a few guitars through it. To be honest, any guitar with single coil pickups is going to sound horrible on either of the "drive" channels. It's too trebly, and does lack some midrange. That said, it's voiced perfect for humbucking pickups. I play a 1981 Gibson Sonex (poor man's Les Paul) through it, and it sounds fantastic! It's extremely loud, and with the humbucking pickups, it has plenty of growl. Also, for anyone who thinks this amp isn't versatile, you just don't know how to twiddle the knobs. On both channels, I have the treble at 10 and the mid and bass at about 6, and it sounds excellent for what I play (blues-inspired alt-rock). I play a lot with the gain settings, and I can get anything from a slightly dirty Stones "clang" to a thrash metal grind without a lot of noise. The key is the midrange scoop switch on the front of the amp, Press that, and you get that classic metal tone instantly. I've owned my fair share of amps over the years (Ross 10w combo, KMD 100w combo, Fender Blues Junior, Peavy, VOX, Marshall), and with the sole exception of the Blues Junior, this is the best sounding of all of them, and it's easily the most versatile.
I kept reading reviews putting this amp down. I usually play a Marshall Valvestate which is loud enough but I tried one of these out and I bought it immediately. It has that great retro look. Even the Fender badge is a vintage style one. It cost hardly anything but its so loud. It has that classic fender sound. I did make a few alterations out of personal preference. I added an output as it didn't have one(It drives an extra cab brilliantly) and I changed the spring reverb to a longer one.
I run a line 6 floor pod plus through mine and have been playing a monthly gig in bars with it. We are more of a country/classic rock band.. but the floor pod plus solves any distortion problems that some are complaining about. Great cleans and plenty loud even for the size venues that we've been playing. It has a great pre-1969 blackface look to it as well! Great Amp!
There are a few articles on this if you type it in google but the simplest way if you just want to add a speaker cab is to take the two wires (that split into four) going to your speakers and join a pair of wires to them which you solder to a jack input that is easily fitted to the back of the cab. .These amps have so much power that I think they sound great with another cab.
I still gig live in bars with this. (Played 2 Nights Ago) We're more classic country and southern rock. The cleans are as good as I've heard in any amp. With overdriven tones/distortion... I use a Line 6 Floor Pod Plus and am surprised at how this amp doesn't color my tone. I never was a real big fan of the distorted tones from the Frontman 212. However, my floor pod sure takes care of this. This amp get's plenty loud! 100 watts of goodness. Use my suggestion for tone and you'll surprised.
Hi, question: if i use line 6 floor pod or another similar multi-effects processor and want to switch between clean, overdrive, distortion, wah etc only on the multi-effects processor, can the frontman 212r just remain on clean channel? New user here.
@Tommys161 Using the Pod as a Pre Amp through the power in. This amp really doesn't color the tone that you get from the pod and it's got some punch! I mostly play Blues / Southern Rock and it gets the job done real well! Sorry if I threw you off about the going past 6 on the Volume knob statement. I've played it clean at gigs as well without the pod and it's plenty loud. With the Pod.. It drives the amp's volume. It delivers a great Marshall tone! Always welcome! Best of luck.
@Eguitarist93 I'm still using my first guitar which is a First Act from Wal-Mart so I can understand what you're saying about the bad pickups. I've had it for five years and even though it's a First Act guitar, it still handles better than my friend's Ibanez. The amp sounded fine when I used it at my last gig. The feedback only happens when I have it cranked up real loud and I'm not playing the guitar. I can deal with it til I get a new guitar. Thanks for the help man.
I bought this amp yesterday and I like it so far, not used to the reverb sound or mid contour yet it's my first big amp, haven't been able to truely test it's power cause my kids were home but they're going to a birthday tomorrow and I plan on rocking the fucking shit out of my neighbourhood on my 2 new 12s with some grunty drop C or drop B metal riffs
@Tommys161 You're right the distortion isn't the best. However.. I'm running a line 6 floor pod plus through mine by bypassing the effects channel in this amp and it sounds incredible! You can get some real dirty bluesy sounding distortion. I use that setup twice a month for my bands bar gigs. It's an ok amp alone.. Awesome amp with a floor pod plus!!! Plenty loud for all of the bars I've played in! I've never needed anything past 6 on the volume knob.
@801Current i have the fender frontman 65r, and yes you can run two guitars in. you can do this on most amps actually. i run a synth and a guitar at the same time, but the two guitars sounded better.
@DANgerous124 well the poof noise is normal dont worry about that its the reverb doing it. as for the hissing im not really sure why it would be doing that
No, not made for two guitars. In this case, Input 1 is for passive electronic instruments (normal sensitivity) and Input 2 is for active electronics/high gain instruments (lower sensitivity).
@Kizuatojp You must have a defective model. I play hard and heavy rhythm and this amp kicks ass. It sounds awesome with a distortion pedal and with tweaking the EQ YOU CAN PLAY ANYTHING. I collect amps and play thru Marshalls, Vox, and every Fender amp I can find. You most certainly can play metal. This amp is underrated. You just have to EQ IT. The built in overdrive is on the light side, but nothing a boost pedal, and good distortion can't fix.
I'm using this amp for over 1 year, its great for practising (if you find the right spot for the volume, cus its damn loud, once you got the volume right I recommend never touching it again XD). I also play with friends in a basement, it keeps up with a drummer EASILY. Very cheap. Combine it with a Boss Distortion DS-1 pedal or another one that you like, the drive on the amp is crap compared to that :P. Sounds very good clean too. Keep the mids low, bass and treble high for nice metal sound
For the people to know, i've got one of these monsters, and to be honest, the clean channel is pretty damn good, but the distortion, it sounds awful. In my opinion, it isnt even good for blues, because of the sound of it. Sounds like crap, believe me. But overall, the amp is good, you have a nice clean fender channel, a nice Fender Accutronics Reverb (springs) and enough power for all your small to medium gigs needs ;)
@LukeGaulMusic Absolutely! I've been doing gigs in bars for over 2 years with this amp. Plenty loud! We have a 4 piece classic rock band and I can't get past 6 without drowning everyone out. I run a line 6 floor pod plus through it.
Great video. I have the Frontman 65. On the clean channel, set the Frontman (probably ALL Frontman amps) like this: Volume: 2 (any louder and your neighbors might get pissed!) LOL.. Treble: 3 Bass: 6
@MrAdeVogel I still use my first guitar from five years ago, a First Act guitar with single coil pickups from Wal-Mart. It's not a bad guitar at all. I'm waiting to upgrade to a new guitar once I have enough money saved up.
@MrTelecaster101 You mean by using the clean channel, or using the Pod as Pre amp? Yeah, they are both pretty good options. Either you buy a Pre amp emulator, something like a Vox Tonelab St for example, and you connect it to the power in, or you use nice pedals through the clean channel, both good options, depending on what sounds you are looking for... Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience, i'm looking forward to buy some pedals to help this monster's tone, and this gives me some hope! :)
@rsizemore12 I'm not sure why I used the term hissing but is it normal for it to make noise whenever your not playing? For instance, I'll have my guitar volume to 3 and when I go from 1 to 2 it starts making white noise, like a low hum and it gets louder as I turn up the volume. The tone sounds fine but there's just that white noise in the background that's kind of distracting.
The amp can handle high-gain fairly well if you use the second input jack and a good boost pedal. The built-in drive channel is rather poor for playing metal and harder rock genres.
@SaveFace23 it's like asking is this bike good for riding a bike? you need to know what you want to do to decide if you want a mountain bike or a city bike But you can defenitly play smaler gigs with it, i don't know where you from, but in my area mostly every gig the amps are miced, so power doesn't matter
@CreedofCorpsesTV well first off i sucked in the video ill try posting another. but yeah man this amp really rocks and is loud. if your wanting to play metal i would recomend a distortion pedal c the distortion on the amp sucks
You can buy this amp and later you can buy an overdrive pedal...(If the gain not will be punk or metal enough) :) Hope I helped.. Iam not english.. sorry for mistakes
I don't know why but I can't get this amp past volume 1/12 without it just... getting really high in volume. It's like it goes from 1-10 automatically.
so could you plug a microphone and a guitar in at the same time? like if you were to travel and just play gigs by yourself this would be all youd need?
I'm a huge Green Day, Yellowcard, and Foo Fighters fan....would this be good for a punk Green Day riff? Like distortion....or would a Marshall be better?
Nice amp...if you play heavy stuff, get a quality distortion pedal like a suhr riot and put it in front of the clean channel. I am getting one of these and will never use the drive channels at all.
@klv400 oh yes it is i absolutely love this amp. i used to want the 65 twin reverb but i got this and ill never ask for the 65 twin bc i honestly think this sounds just as good
great review :) I was thinking about geting it but my friend says that it has too much treble and he thinks they are shit , but my cousin has it and it sound okay to me (on a gibson sg) what do you think about that amp and how much did it cost ? :)
I just bought this amp. My amp has a weird, I guess you can say hissing sound when I plug in my guitar or anything else for that matter and the sound gets louder as I turn up the volume. It also makes this weird poof sound whenvever I turn it off. Is that normal?
Does this amp squeal like mad when you turn the treble up? I've bought mine today and if I go pass two on the treble on all three channels it makes a horrendous buzzing and squeeling sound. Please reply back cause if it does I know its normal and won't have to return it.
Would this amp be OK to play something like alternative rock, or more precisely the old Smashing Pumpkins (Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie era)? With a big muff pedal, naturally :D
@DeftScissor261 i have the line 6 spider III. the quality of sound is 10x better on this fender. the spider has a lot of preset tones and the fender would be much better for finding your own sound, and i want the frontman now. id go with the fender unless youre looking for premade sounds and effects
@Ghostofgrace92 ya, im 17 and live upstairs lol...i've had to pack 4x12 cabinets upstairs and those things are a BITCH lol...i was looking to slim down a bit on my rig and this seems pretty good
@MrCrazyDunka im not worried about him or the other guy. You know me and my band get to tour all of america and were leaving in my to go to germany and japan im making the money and living the dream hes not so im not worried.
Meu amigo,.. assim você desanima qualquer um a comprar um 212R,.. _ e esta com uma SE Tremonti ainda,..?? o que tu arrumou para ficar ruim assim féra,.?
@iConverseMyLife hands down it is a great amp. if it has to much treble turn the treble down duh lol i payed 299 for mine brand new and to this day its the best investment ive made and i have alot of high end amps

One of the inputs is brighter than the other one, also I believe that in some instances you can chain amps together
@TheVibeBandTV hey bro thanx alot. actually i use distortion pedals i hate the distortion on the amp but distortion pedals sound great on it.
i think the distortion sounds great, especially with the Mid-Contour button on

@JohnTheodo its probably just the normal hiss you get when you crank the gain on amps. i would recomend a noise reducing pedal
Great video. I have the Frontman 65. On the clean channel, set the Frontman (probably ALL Frontman amps) like this:
Volume: 2 (any louder and your neighbors might get pissed!) LOL..
Treble: 3
Bass: 6
@coldironhands1
And the "Twin" is an all tube amp, so you can't really compare sounds or weight.
If people don't like the distortion on this amp, just buy a SansAmp Pedal, that will solve your distortion problems.
@MrAdeVogel I still use my first guitar from five years ago, a First Act guitar with single coil pickups from Wal-Mart. It's not a bad guitar at all. I'm waiting to upgrade to a new guitar once I have enough money saved up.
@coldironhands1 body size its about the same. I think the twins are 60 or 65 watts and the frontman is 100
@MrTelecaster101 You mean by using the clean channel, or using the Pod as Pre amp? Yeah, they are both pretty good options. can u put other pedals on it too? cuz i have some behringer pedals and i want 2 buy it and stay using the pedals too

Use clean channel with ALL tone knobs on 2 - then it actually sounds good
great review! have ever tryed to put a distortion stompbox in front of it?I was wonderin how this amp handles pedals
i love this i own one and after a while i've managed to get a good vintage tone!
@CreedofCorpsesTV well first off i sucked in the video ill try posting another. but yeah man this amp really rocks and is loud. if your wanting to play metal i would recomend a distortion pedal c the distortion on the amp sucks

+Martin Krajyan I just picked it up and the same thing happens to me. It's the amp
I'm thinking about getting the boss ge7 equalizer and controlling the volume with the pedal.
This amp sounds awesome with heavy pickups
@rsizemore12 just a tip if u hook a smaller amp into the "pre out" the distortion sounds a lot better
@alliumband The Fender Bassman is so awesome!!! I just got one and am amazed with what it can do for guitar!!!!
Is the distortion on this amp good? I heard that some people think it is weak, which dissappointed me. Also do u recommend this amp?
so could you plug a microphone and a guitar in at the same time? like if you were to travel and just play gigs by yourself this would be all youd need?
I'm a huge Green Day, Yellowcard, and Foo Fighters fan....would this be good for a punk Green Day riff? Like distortion....or would a Marshall be better?
I have this amp and play solo jazz guitar and I like it, nice clean sound !!
Is that normal to have that static noise in background when you aren’t playing? Mine does the same. I have a smaller amp and it does not do that.
Nice amp...if you play heavy stuff, get a quality distortion pedal like a suhr riot and put it in front of the clean channel. I am getting one of these and will never use the drive channels at all.

@rsizemore12 it could be your pickups. Are they single coil pick ups?
@rsizemore12 does it work well with multi-fx pedals, like the zoom G2.1u?
@rsizemore12 yeah, but fender twin is tube
Hey man, you think it would do a good job on metal songs ?
I just bought this amp. My amp has a weird, I guess you can say hissing sound when I plug in my guitar or anything else for that matter and the sound gets louder as I turn up the volume. It also makes this weird poof sound whenvever I turn it off. Is that normal?
@XxJD94Xx1 it honestly depends on what your going to be using it for. i only use mine for cleans
what do you mean? those are the songs i play. I wanna know If this is a good amp for that type of music.
@TrippyTheShroom i dont know exactly how much it weighs but its not to bad to carry up steps
@iConverseMyLife your welcome
@DavidFUBB If you want that you should get a Marshall JCM or Plexi with a good preferrably Marshall Speaker, or a Fender Bassman
is this a good amp for blues and old school rock?
@InspiringWear i personally just dont like the distirtion for my music. its just a personal opinion i guess.
@wrona003 yeah if you have bad cables that would cause hissing
@801Current im not sure if you can run two guitars but my best bet would be no. pedals sound great through it
@DeftScissor261 i have the line 6 spider III. the quality of sound is 10x better on this fender. the spider has a lot of preset tones and the fender would be much better for finding your own sound, and i want the frontman now. id go with the fender unless youre looking for premade sounds and effects
is this a good amp for playing punk? like green day, sum 41,etc
Why are there two inputs?
@rsizemore12 random question....how much does it weigh? because i'll have to be packing this thing up stairs anytime i want to play it lol
@Tallukeah yes
Good for small gigs?
@Ghostofgrace92 ya, im 17 and live upstairs lol...i've had to pack 4x12 cabinets upstairs and those things are a BITCH lol...i was looking to slim down a bit on my rig and this seems pretty good
how big is this compared to a fender twin?
@MrCrazyDunka im not worried about him or the other guy. You know me and my band get to tour all of america and were leaving in my to go to germany and japan im making the money and living the dream hes not so im not worried.
Does it come with a footswitch for channel changes?
would this be a good amp for pedals?
Meu amigo,..
assim você desanima qualquer um a comprar um 212R,..
_
e esta com uma SE Tremonti ainda,..??
o que tu arrumou para ficar ruim assim féra,.?
Maybe if the reverb sounded more springy, and the distortion is a joke ahahaha.
Pretty good reverb, driveless cleans though.
Is it loud enough for gigs?
@TheRagefan44 Man 100 watts are dammn loud! you will never have to turn it on maximum.! so yes it is loud enough!
@gastonbarker yes, sir
Great demo!
This Amp have a good bass or a flat sound ( sorry for my english ) .??
Qual guitarra está usando brother?
btw is it worthy for thrash metal??
Qual guitarra esta usando brother? Faltou afinar...
wen was it made what year!did it come out???
is this a good rock/hard rock amp?
would this amp sound good wth an ME-70 and an epiphone? i want a solid sound wth sustaine
@CorvetteCoonass true true
@ivur8623 ive had to tweak it alot. I run a boss chorus pedal through it now and its amazing
@iConverseMyLife hands down it is a great amp. if it has to much treble turn the treble down duh lol i payed 299 for mine brand new and to this day its the best investment ive made and i have alot of high end amps
Would this amp be good for playing blink 182?
great review thanks
@rsizemore12 hey can u connect a microphone to this amp?
@rsizemore12 thanks, cover Cemetery Gates!!
@rsizemore12 acctually you can run two through it
how does one add a cheeky output for a cab on this amp?
When I put the drive into 9 im listening to a noise like IIIIIII. Why?
