    I really love the fact that you are not into the whole tube tone snob scene.
    It's nice to see a review of SS amps that end the discussion by saying "Its good... for a SS amp"

      :) I've played enough valve amps in my life to know that there no better than solid state. Solid state just gets a bad rap for no real reason. I prefer Solid State over valve any day.
      Thank you very much for watching. :)

      ***** I hope you check out my follow up post, but....
      Ever hear of, or try a Quilter amp? Specifically the quilter mini 101 or the toneblock 201?
      Fantastic amps. Lightweight, tons of power (100 and 200 watts respectively) all analog.
      And the unique circuitry actually interacts differently in its preset modes! So you get different, authentic styles of clipping or compression.
      Oh, and did I mention they are only 2 and 4 lbs respectively? check em out if you can. it's all I play now.

      @@thedavesimpson There's nothing objectionably good about the tone of a SS. I mean it's passable, but there's just no warmth to it. I could understand the simplicity of not having to maintain tubes and what not, but that's about it.

    I gigged with this amp last night with friends in a reheashall band (voice, bass, drums, piano) and I was really impressed. I always used tube Marshall amps, but this Fender 212R is great. A little heavy. Volume never over 3. it's loud!! super clean and decent crunch. 🤟

      Tony Colletta * Surprised ? Did you not see the FENDER badge on it? All kidding aside though, those fender frontman amps are very very good for how cheap they are, but my fender frontman 212R blew up the filter caps and some heavy ceramic resistors and I've been meaning to get it fixed (it's all taken apart in my garage ready to be fixed) but can't find the parts plus it's not really in the agenda seeing as how I now own all the fender classics (Vintage Twin REVERB, vintage Bassman silver face,BF Pro Reverb...) so the frontman falls down the list of priorities pretty fast, ESPECIALLY when A pair of tubes cost about as much as it would cost to take the FM212 TO a shop to repair, and the FM212 can be found used for$100.00 usually so I could just buy another if the urge came, but it doesn't really the classics take care it my needs, until they don't then solid state seems appealing for the fact that they just get up an go, no warming up and no stage power voltage issues like with my deluxe reverb not working properly because the Damned electricity in the night club is getting sucked by the deep fryer and the massive freezer along with all the other bar and kitchen appliances going all night in the joint 😉 But yeah I really like Dave Simpson channel and talking gear with fellow music makers 😉

    I've had one for six months now (bought after watching this review). Great amp! One complaint I keep seeing about this amp is that it's too loud! The volume controls only have to go a half millimetre past "1" and it starts getting loud. Also, the amp really starts sounding even better at 6 and above on the volume, too loud for a garage jam, let alone bedroom practice. Discovered a great hack for this today, and it's a ridiculously obvious solution.
    I just connected a battery-powered preamp/D. I. Pedal (Behringer ADI) that I had using the FX loop and it works as a volume attenuator. I can now crank the Amp's volume controls as high as I like while using the D.I. as a master volume. Also, to my ear, it's greatly improved the Amp's overdrive sound.

      Hey, thanks for that information. I was going to sell my amp because I can't turn it up in an apartment. I saw a pedal that did lower the volume thru the loop connection but wasn't sure if the two in and out of this amp was for a loop pedal or not. I never got it up to 6. Only 2.

    I love mine! Need to get it out of storage. One of the few amps that makes my older BOSS MT-2 sound decent (on the clean channel of course). Very tubey sounding solid state amp. Great distortion tones. The clean channel even breaks up a bit like a tube amp at higher volumes. I also used to patch my Zoom GFX 5 straight on the power amp in, with the speaker sim turned off. Later versions did include a headphone jack, but I don't need that as the GFX 5 is fine for late night sonic brawling.

    I bought one with a Squier JV as the seller would not sell them separately. I like the clean channel, the amp is a little fuzzy on the drive channel but my twin bucker guitar loves it. Strats and Teles are great clean but the 'warm melt' that my Fender Super 210 tube amp gives you is missing from this solid state amp. All in all it's a great and very loud amp and thankfully there are no digital multi effects gimmicks.

    I bought a solid state Pearce G2r in the early 90's and gigged with it for years. I lost count of how many other guitarists would come up to me and ask how I was getting such a killer tone, and in stereo too. I ran my guitar straight in with no effects pedals other than the onboard Alesis reverb/delay. I own a Marshall tube amp now, and the Pearce is still my number one go to amp.

    Great demo, really enjoyed it...! Seems the Celestions made a HUGE difference because I thought the tones, regardless of channel, sounded terrific. I have a 2008 model myself, of which I am going to outfit with WGS ET65's (which comes highly recommended for this specific amp), in the hopes of attaining a great sound as you did. The "Special Design" (Eminence) speakers from the factory are just plain awful, except at low volume on the clean channel.
    BTW: Your Strat is absolutely gorgeous. Although it has seen a lot of action, it looks more like a a one-of-a-kind custom model that sounds amazing. I say never part with it...!

Suffice to say my FM212R's sound is simply amazing - as close to a Twin Reverb as one can get, but for much less.

    What kind of pickups are you using in that Strat? I had a blue Frontman 212R. Mine was a bit roughed up but all in all I was very happy with it. I lost it when moving last year and am thinking of getting another one. The guy I bought it from said it had black widows in it... He thought. I paid $400... excuse me, Overpaid for it. Not complaining about the amp... he WAS a friend but always wanted to get over on whoever. Anyways, I was wondering what would be an alternative speaker to use. Whatever I had sounded alright but kinda muddy and dark. I played an ESP LTD ( Nothing fancy but it played great and I went through all of the settings and found a couple of tones I liked. I like a bright, clear sound like Hughie Thomasson when he played with Skynyrd and sort of got close. Any recommendations?? Thanks and greatly appreciated!!

      Thank you. It doesn't look like this any more though. It just a Vintage V6 i ordered from vintage. When it came it was black and i wanted a white one with a maple neck so i sprayed it and over tme the paint chipped to reveal the black underneath. Plus dragging it around a stage helped it look like this. I got tired of it looking this way though so i refinished it again totally white with no black underneath. Thankyou for watching. :)

    Hi Dave, how would you set this amp to get Frusciante tone with the Jackhammer? Which Channel? Clean or drive? Thanks in advance☺️

    Hi Dave,
    I have a Question.
    I own a Fender stage 100
    Did you know if it is posible to make the Reverb switchable by footswitch?
    Does it run to underbreak the connection on the Board?

    what where the settings on this? also: any good settings for a good indie/cobain-esque sound for this amp?

    Dave, have you ever had the privilege of playing a London Reverb 100 watt head?
    I picked one up for cheap a while back and have just dragged it out of storage. Absolute dream clean channel for pedals.

    dave, nother questio. just got mine (used) and when i dont play or turn down my controls on guitar it buzzes and well it just makes noice. is this normal with this amp and if it isnt what can i do about it?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

      I would go get it looked it. Theres always background hum on an amp but if its loud buzzing you need to get it checked out. :)

      Also check you guitar chords, when they are broken you get noise. Also check your guitar jack and make sure it is tight. Another thing that adds noise is when you use too many or poor pedals.

      +Matthew I'm afraid I'm no longer sure of my setting but I think the clean channel was Treble - 5 Middle - 6 Bass - 4 the overdrive channel was Gain - 10 Bass - 10 Middle - 10 Treble - 0 Thank you for watching. :)

    iam looking for a gigging combo. i like fender amps but i play punkrock music. a champion or this one sounds nice but would it do the trick for me? maybe with a distort pedal?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

      With a pedal this amp would indeed do the job. Sound great with pedals. :)

    Would this be able to do Gilmour tones in a gigging situation? Like, that's how many pedals we're talking here. Like, 17 on a board.

    • @sethheaster5715
      @sethheaster5715 7 років тому

      Also, I Saw a video where a guy played through one of these and he said that the clean channel starts to distort at high volumes. Does this actually happen or is it just a problem with his? VERY IMPORTANT!!!

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

      I think it'll do ok with pedals and as for the distorted volume. I never got it that loud to see. It was clean up to a very high level. :)

      I have formulated another question! When you say "run another amp as a slave" what does that mean?

    • @AuntAlnico4
      @AuntAlnico4 6 років тому +1

      A Band Geeks Palace * It means that for example take this fender frontman 212 and run it with all the knobs on half and then take say another solid state like a Marshall and run the line out from that Marshall into the front of the fender and use all the channel switching and EQ from the Marshall to get the clean tone of the FENDER but when you engage the overdrive in the Marshall it slaves into the fender for the round fat sound of the fender with the added benefit of the Marshall gain channel too. it gives you the volume boost and the channel switching of the Marshall plus the gain channel on Marshall is usually way way better so you get the best of both amps and major volume if needed.😉 I do the slave thing with my CR120 Orange head into 1969 fender BASSMAN 50 head for the super sweet hand wired tube tone of the fender with the added benefit of channel switching from the Orange head 😉 Since the Orange is solid state you don't have to plug it into a speaker so I just use the line out from the Orange strait into the input on the Bassman. Works like a champ and sounds so Soo so so good there really is no need to ever buy ANOTHER Orange tube amp or any other amp for that matter, yes it sounds that Good !! You should try it some time with whatever amps you have at your disposal.

    My 212r makes a constantly clicking/tapping noise when the guitar cable is plugged or unplugged. Does anyone know why? Or what could be the problem.
