    This is a very simple and abbreviated explanation of How AimPoint works. The Aimpoint Golf system is very thorough and a little complex to learn, but quite effective.

    The putt you hit "too firm" stopped just a couple balls past the hole, implying it was actually perfect speed. On that putt, it missed left because you hit it offline too far left. I get the concept though. Very well cummunicated.

      Exactly the putt he said he hit firm and the one he said he hit softly were the exact same distance. Why would you upload that instead of just taking another couple minutes and putts to get what you are demonstrating right? Also, why in the world is he showing us prior to that that a putt hit too softly and doesn't make it to the hole, won't go in... um no shit. Video altogether wasn't bad but some very head scratching things toward the end

    Very simple explanation of Aim Point. Well done. However, as Ben Crenshaw replied when he was asked what the break on a putt was..he said "how hard are you going to hit it?". Putting is all about pace. Practice your pace above all else. You will become a great putter! Personally, I use the plumb bob with the right pace. I was a rubbish putter. But I practiced my pace between 3ft and 25 ft (I found anything longer, too many variables come into play, and the crucial putts are 25ft and under in my opinion). It became almost instinct over time. It helped me get down to scratch. Also, when you get your pace dialled in on your own course, somehow you quickly adapt to greens elsewhere..dont know why but you do!

      The last statement is so true. When I play at other courses I normally have a blinder on the greens. It could be I'm over-reading my home courses lines...at a new course I take one look and see the line straight away

      It would be interesting to compare the location of the determined 'target point' for the aimpoint VS plumb bob methods when both methods are applied to the same putting situation.
      (I guess an advantage of the plumb bob method is that it takes care of the total or average slope automatically, whereas if there are significant changes in the slope along the way, the aimpoint method would require several measurements of the slope to somhow find the most appropriate 'average' slope.)

    I was rather surprised by your comment that "they take hours and hours" to teach you how to feel the slopes. I had an AimPoint lesson yesterday and it took less than an hour to get the basic feel for the various slopes and how to translate this into the amount of break. I can only describe the lesson as transformational! For something that has struggled for decades to read greens properly, I came away after a 2 hour lesson feeling very confident in my new found ability.

    PUTTING IS ALL SPEED!!! Thank you!!!!
    So tbh I've never been a bad green reader or bad putter, but obviously we all want to continuously improve (even if we merely convince ourselves we our LOL) but I've come more from the pace side of things rather than reading. I have amazing pace most of the time, and most of my reads are good.... but easy reads are easy.... I recently started looking into ways of improving and came across aimpoint. I really like the idea, given I'm just starting out with it. I bought a digital level and am training myself that route. I'm most likely not doing exactly what aimpoint is, however given that my background in mechanical and aerospace engineering.... now that the idea has been put in my head with reference points, pertaining to slope, I can now go to town playing with it and making it work for me!

  • @rstar88105

    I have been doing this method for years, the only thing is, I have no idea how to correlate it to degrees of slope so for me to compare this to a greens, reading book would be difficult. Feeling with your feet to verify what you see has been very helpful.

    In practice, you'd have to experiment with your own fingers to work out how big your finger/fingers are. However, the ball doesn't roll with a linear break at all lengths so a longer putt will break more and a shorter less. The ball is slowing down exponentially and at the same time the ball is speeding up on the fall line exponentially - which is why the putt gives you that hockey stick shape. These two bits of maths don't quite cancel each other out so double the putt length isn't double the break which is what you get with a finger or two. It's pretty much all derived from the work Templeton did and from that you can see that if you were using a finger to predict break on a 10-footer, five-foot would be something like 5% less and a 20-footer 10% more and 30-footer 20% more. And I'm sure they would explain that on an Aimpoint course - it's just the underlying physics of gravity and slope. And then the break is affected by the ball speed/Stimp speed of the surface. Faster surface = slower ball roll = more time to get to the hole= more time for the green inclination to effect the break = bigger break. % slope and fingers is a very rough and ready way to read a green - but for many, better than their rough guess. But you can work it up into a better read and more accuracy using a bit more maths and reading Templeton's original paper on the physics of putting.

      No, longer putt will not break more than a shorter one. The reason is simple : speed of the ball. The faster, the less break it takes.

    • @ChristopherDowning
      @ChristopherDowning Рік тому

      @@emme6907 That's not correct. The time a ball takes to reach the hole is longer with a longer putt - therefore the break is greater over the greater putt distance. That's why the finger thing can work - further away a single finger will show a greater break than closer.

    • @emme6907
      @emme6907 Рік тому

      @@ChristopherDowning no, I'm sorry but you are wrong.
      The natural perspective of the finger in relation to distance/size compared to the hole, compensates the relation between the break strength and the aim point. And again, if distance is longer you need to hit it stronger, if you hit it stronger, it will go faster. The faster it goes, the more it negates gravity, therefore the break.

    Appreciate you and the video. 2 questions:
    1. How do you take into account multiple breaks? I assume you do this multiple times?
    How do you take into account the distance from the hole? (e. g. if you are putting from 5 ft and 20 ft)

    • @misteroneputt
      @misteroneputt  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Bruce. Thanks for your comments and the questions. 1. Multiple breaks you would use the aim point method on each section or break. Not as effective of course but no method is great for multiple breaks. 2. I work on distance more than anything else. If you are using aim point as a green reading method, you shouldn't have to make any adjustments for distance. The added speed you'll give a longer putt should compensate for the fact it has more time to break. In theory, if you have say 2 degrees of slope and use 2 fingers to find your aim point then you would aim at the same point no matter the distance because a longer putt will break less early due to you rolling it faster. Again, longer putts are always more difficult.

    You can get all the calculations you want and use all the science you need with "aim point" however it doesn't measure grain and grain especially in the south will effects your putts no matter what the slope. Also I can tell by the putt you hit it's dead into the grain because of the darkness of the grass so it's definitely a slower putt.

      Courses in the Las Vegas area where I live and play most often, have very little grain but that is changing rapidly due to water conservation efforts. Grain does have a significant affect on how putts break. I've recently become certified as a coach for Tour Read Green Reading system and now use it exclusively. It is similar to AimPoint in some ways and superior in others. Will do a video in a few weeks comparing the two. Short answer is I would deduct break for putts into grain and add break for putts with grain... and the same for cross grain...left to right break with grain running left would break less. With Aimpoint I don't know how much to adjust. With Tour Read I can instantly calculate the impact of grain on my read. Thus, the coming video comparing the two systems. Apologies for such a long answer

    Interesting. Been watching Masters and this Homa guy in Tiger's pairing kept doing weird things on the green, ha. Bending his knees, looked like he was praying to an earth god or something so I decided to look into it.
    So you're using calibration tools to know the exact slope, and then building muscle memory based on feel. As a strings musician, it makes sense to me as that how I play without looking at what I'm doing, even when jumping all the way up into high register and back down. Gotta be precise, and it works for arm/wrist/hand muscle, so I don't see why it wouldn't work for feet/calves/etc. I bet it takes years to get decent at it though

      Good question: On short putts say 6 feet or less I would take the reading halfway between the ball and hole...on longer putts I would take 2, the first halfway and the second within 4-5 feet of the hole. Or even three on really long putts---but the longer the putt, the more important the near the hole reading is and the less important the near the ball reading is. With 2 or 3 slope readings you can add or subtract as needed.

      @@Oldwiseguy-59 I agree...a percentage of break relative to what is always my question? Degrees of slope is easier for me to comprehend. I wonder if people aren't confused or mis speaking when they reference percentage.. I do like putts with a 90 degree break straight down into the bottom of the cup though.

      It is percentage. A 1% slope would equate to a difference in level of 1/4" between your shoes at 2 feet apart when straddling the line of the putt. Being able to detect or feel this difference in level through the pressure in the feet and legs is what the method is all about. Personally I dont believe the differences in feel would be discernible for slopes that differ by 1/2 or 1 degree.

    this is not correct. one finger represents 1 percent of slope rather than 1 degree of slope. drastic difference.

    See absolutely no point in these methods. Just look at the green and it's easy to see the break. Choosing the right line is easy, speed is the killer.
    You just said in the video 'to get this you either need a green book with slope on it or a digital level.' LOL.

    Doesn't help at all if you are looking at a double-breaker.

      I know people who use it on double breakers and get an aim point that they try to roll to a second aim point … but very difficult

    This is just another excuse for inability to putt. Simple. I am truly amazed how golfers, especially PROFESSIONAL golfers, get so messed up on the greens. Over the last 100 years, putting stats have not improved based on different methods of reading the green or holding the putter. Putting is a very simple stroke. Just pushing the ball to the hole. Nowhere near as difficult as learning to swing the club consistently well. Keep you putting simple and your head clear. No fear like so many Pros. AIMPOINT IS ANOTHER EXCUSE FOR FKD UP HEAD. That's all.

    Aimpoint is utter bullshit. Way too many variables. Good putters are naturals. Come and try that on the links courses in Scotland. Just makes amateurs look daft when they haven't a clue.
