That shop towel effect was outstanding.
It rather surprised me too!
Ohhhh I'm definitely going to try this with metallic acrylics too.. one normal acrylic layer then a metallic.. and repeat.. netbit would look awesome
Oh that would be beautiful! Would love to see the result.
Bonjour Catherine. Je suis tes vidéos que j'adore. Je ne parle pas anglais. Que sont les ingrédients dans ta petite boîte transparente et dans ta bouteille en plastique blanc qui fait des auréoles sur ta feuille. Merci d'avance.
@@danyrabin7149
There is rubbing alcohol in the White bottle. Not drinking alcohol.😊
@@danyrabin7149 Il y a alcool dans la bouteille blanc, mais je ne sais pas la liquide dans la bouteille transparante.
Wow, it looks beautiful !! Looks like a lot of fun, too !! You've inspired me, I've got to try this!! Thank you so much for sharing this video and your wonderful talent!!
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the demo. Thank YOU for watching!

J'ai hâte d'essayer cette technique. Je viens de vous découvrir et je me suis abonnée.
Thanks so much for watching AND subscribing!!!
I am intrigued by the funky bucket.
You mean the teal one with 3 spaces for water? This is sold at most art supply stores in the US like Dick Blick.
Thank you so much Catherine, I really really enjoyed watching you create all these amazing collage paper’s and they’re truly amazing and adorable too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
I truly appreciate you watching my art demos Mags. Thanks for the loving feedback.
Ohh and I bet using alcohol inks on top of wet acrylic paint would be fun too!
I actually tried it and it didn't work, however substituting alcohol ink instead of rubbing alcohol does!
@@catrains.artist that's what i was suggesting lol when my crafty room is tidy I will be definitely giving it ago :)
Thank you for sharing this fabulous technique. I will try it next week. I wonder if you could contain this spread of the alcohol by using a heat gun to speed up the drying
@@debbiebunyard4829 Sounds like an intriguing idea. Hope you will try that and let me know how it works!
Awesome, thank you Cat
You are welcome Donna!
I no sooner typed paper when Catherine sent me the link!! WOW! Now watching for the second time and I’m totally loving this technique. Thank you so much, I’m so excited to binge your videos and create!
I'm so very touched! So glad that you are enjoying my art demos.
I absolutely love your sessions! Could you show some of your finished mixed media art? Do you sell them? Thanks again!!!!
What a loving thing to say, thank you! I have 5 videos where I show how I turn these papers into a collage series. The most recent was a couple weeks ago. At the moment, I'm not selling my work, although I plan to give many collages away during a massive giveaway I'm holding for those who have taken my free online course Collage Kickstart. There is a link under this video where you can see if this workshop might interest you.
Amazing technique…thanks so much for

Yup, no gel plate required! Have fun with this. I LOVE these papers!
Fantastic!
Thanks so much!
Beautiful; thank you!
You are most welcome!
Thank you for this great tutorial.
So glad that you enjoyed it!
I’m glad to know that you have a harder time getting light colors . I’m in the last part of the 5 day workshop and I have to say the light blues were the hardest part for me! These techniques are amazing!
I'm so happy you're in the course! Thank you for joining. Light blues are certainly hard to capture just the right hue at times!
Great techniaue! Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Totally in LOVE with this technique!❤ Thank you for sharing!
Glad you like it!

So glad that you liked this technique. Have you tried it yet?
How beautiful! Thanks very much for sharing!
That warms my heart! Thank you for watching!
These would make great journal covers
Absolutely! 🤩
I'm so gonna try this 😍Thanks for sharing!
Hope you enjoy creating these!
What a great technique! I could see so many rabbit 🐇 holes to go down - one being using neon acrylic markers to doodle over the patterns.. Thank you for this inspiration, it'll keep me happily playing for weeks - and it will make a change from my usual alcohol 🍸ha ha ☺ 💗💗 much appreciation from a Scottish pensioner .
I love the idea of using neon markers! Thank you for watching and happy creating!
Thank you for this beautiful video and techniques:)
Glad it was helpful! 😊
These SO look like a Science project...kind of is though, isn't it ? 😀 Love it!
I always say I feel a bit like a mad scientist! 😂
You can do this with acrylic ink!! ❤😂😊thanks Catherine ❤❤have a Hicks day!!
I tried that and it didn't work, HOWEVER, alcohol inks work amazing. Just like rubbing alcohol!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I'm wondering how this will work on rice paper (I'm loving it for gel printing, and what might be different if matte medium is used rather than gloss. Can't wait to try it!
I'm not sure if this will work on rice paper, but I'm thinking it would. Sounds like an experiment waiting to happen! Let me know what you find. I can't remember when I used either medium. Hmmmm, maybe to seal between layers???
I can’t wait to try this! Have you tried spraying the alcohol on?
I have and although the spray produces small dots, they quickly smudge in with the watered down paint so go away. Maybe using a different kind of spray would work, but mine didn't.
New to your channel, and I’m enjoying your techniques. Thanks.
So glad that you are here! Thank you for subscribing and watching my videos🙏🏻
wow! your videos give me insomnia! its just too exciting.I must watch in the morning only!
I'm so sorry, but thank you! 😂 I am so glad you find them so exciting though! 💕
So now I view them only in the morning!
@@barbarajdaley Too funny! Good strategy.
Wow!! thanks for sharing this! I really enjoy your teaching style and how you work things out or make decisions while you're on camera...its really helpful to see the process, but also makes me not so worried about outcomes and experimenting more...especially since I love the unpredictability of less control😁
Your feedback means the world to me.Thank you for watching - I love sharing my process with you!
Really pretty cool. TFS 😊
Thank you for watching! Happy you enjoyed it!
Super idea. Thank you! On a fun note: when you hit your paint brush back and forth on your water bucket, it brought back the exact sound memory of Bob Ross doing the same thing! It’s that hilarious? ( those videos were popular back in the late 1980s and into the 90s! ) BTW, I’m watching this on Thanksgiving Day/night. Hope you had a happy one. Thanks again. 😊
Thanks so much for sharing that with me Janice. I love that anything that I'm doing would remind you of Bob!
Ha ha - I had the very same thought! I could hear Bob saying - just beat the devil out of it. 😄
Love this technique. Does it work as well with other acrylic paints?
As far as I know, it works with all acrylic paints.
Awesomeness! ❤
Thanks! 😄
I just found this one today! I have such a list of techniques to try from watching all your videos! My question is whether you need to use gloss medium after your first layer or can you use matte medium? Also, do you add the gloss medium between each layer? I can’t wait to try this!
Hmmm, its been a while since I did this, but I THINK matte medium will work as well. You don't need to use a medium between each layer. Enjoy playing with this. Truly magical!
Great presentation! What's it like with alternating warm with cool colors?
I haven't tried it with this particular paper . I usually do the "alternating" when I"m making a collage with various papers with different warms and cools.
have you tried dropping some colored alcohol ink on them?
I don't think I have, but sounds like an experiment waiting to happen!
I love your videos. Thank you for sharing this with us.😊 Question..The acrylic paint in the jars, do you mix the paint with anything to slow the drying time? My paint dries so fast.
I made these paints in petrie dishes that I can close with a glass lid. That helps them stay wet until I'm done using them.
This is clever. I wonder how it will come out on rice paper
Try it out and let me know the results! I love exploring with many different mediums and papers.
you could dry it with hairdryer to stop it spreading
Never tried it, but worth a try. Curious how this works for you! Please share when you do it.
Where can I find your 5 day class about using the collage papers we've made?
Here you go www.collageworkshops.com/start. Would be honored to have you join me!
Love the texture with the shop towels! What size are your MDF boards. Thank you.
I LOVE that texture too! I had these boards cut at Lowes hardware, and they are 8x10.
Hi Catherine. Have done this on the gelli plate?
No I haven't, and not sure if it will work or not. Something to experiment with!
Yes, am wondering if you let the alcohol drip down and not form dots....
That is certainly something you can do. Haven't done it, but sounds plausible!
Do you think matte medium would work?
During what part? When do you want to use the matte medium?
Fabulous! Thank you for making this video and inspiring me. Much love and peace from London UK 🇬🇧 ❤😊
It brings me joy to know that these are inspiring you! Happy creating! 😊🥰
Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing your process 😊
So glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate you watching!
Are you only coating the paper once with gloss medium or are you putting it over the paint of every layer?
The gloss medium only goes on the bottom layer.
I tried this with the Apple Barrel paints from Walmart and it didn't turn out at all. I didn't put down an acrylic medium either. Do you think the quality of the paint
It's hard to say whether your paint quality is what made this technique not work, but that could be the issue. Maybe try a Liquitex Basics from a craft story like Michaels and I think you will have a better result. However it could also just be that you need to follow the directions very precisely. Sometimes just experimenting with this will make it work.
If you have a gelli plate and a brayer, you could get a realllllyyy thin, even layer of paint.
Very true!
Can you do this in fabric?
Not sure since I've never tried it, but I would think so. Let me know after you try it!
Have you tried tiny drops and let it run run down in rivulets or to use alcohol in a mister?
Never tried that, but now will have to! Thanks for sharing your inspiration!
Have you tried using stencils?
Yes, I've used stencils with this technique in Part two of using rubbing alcohol. Super cool!
I didn't see, what kind of paint are you using?
I'm using acrylic paint mixed with wallpaper paste. The link is in the description, and I show how to mix it in the video.
Do you get chipping of the painted pieces, when you start using the dried papers. Does ripping or cutting work best?
Great questions! The paint did not chip off when dry. I personally love the look of ripping these papers, but cutting works great too.
Are you combining water with your paint because I can’t seem to get the circles
Yes! I'm dipping my paintbrush in water before I dip it in the paint. The paint is moist before I drop the alcohol. It take a bit of experimenting to figure out how much water to add to the paint. Too much, and the alcohol runs off and blurs. Too little, and you don't get the circles. Keep at it and you'll find your way with this. Took me a bit of experimenting to figure out the water issue!
It is a cool technique but for some reason I just can't get it to work. I am using acrylic paint and then dropping isopropyl alcohol on top. Is there a difference between rubbing alcohol and isopropyl. I am using 91%.
No, they are the same thing. Try again making sure that your paint is VERY wet. Even a little bit of drying will prevent this from working.
is there a way to get this result on tissue paper? i tried it but nothing happened. thanks so much!
I've never tried it on tissue, but I think this will only work when using rather heavy paper.
????
@@catrains.artist ok thank you...i had a feeling that was the case

You are so welcome!
Do you ever put a tissue paper over the design to transfer the print?
I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Can you respond with more specifics about what you want to know and I'm happy to share.
@@catrains.artist after you get your design, putting tissue paper over it to get a transfer and using that also for collage paper.
@@jillpontiere1814 Yes, I do that too! Thanks for the clarification.
@@catrains.artist thanks for confirming that you can make a print from the original
I liked it better where the music showed through.
I agree, need to make more like that! Thanks for the feedback.
Does anyone know if the alcohol affects the "archivalness" (is that even a word?) of the paper in the long run? I have the same question about the baby wipes that everyone likes using for removing acrylic paint thru stencils; wouldn't the chemical ingredients in those also affect the paper over time? Any scientist-types out there know the answer? Thanks!!!
I just did a google search to answer this question, and couldn't find an answer. But did discover that alcohol ink is not archival, but can be sealed with UV varnish to keep it from fading so fast. But is that the same for papers made with pure rubbing alcohol? The question is still out there!
If you are selling the end product it would be worth experimenting. Try a top coat of acrylic medium to seal it, keep that piece along with a similar uncoated piece - cut both in half and put one half on a windowsill, the other half in a drawer, and compare them every few months to see if there's any fading. Takes a while but will give you an idea of lightfastness. I'm not an expert but going on how Gerda Lipski uses acrylic medium to seal layer after layer. Hope that helps - and works! Good luck.
@@EC-lq3qw Excellent suggestion! Thanks so much for sharing it.
I use a spray bottle.
Couldn't you just blow dry it to stop the running?
Good question. Never tried that. This sounds like an experiment waiting to happen! Let me know what you discover!
Do another color
Great idea, and I will with a totally different paper. Since I create a new paper (almost) every week, I rarely go back to the one's I created the week before unless I need more of that particular paper to create a collage. Maybe you can create this in another color and show me!
Sorry , new by here….gloss medium? What is that
Gloss medium is an acrylic liquid that protects the surface of the paper, kind of seals it. You can also use it as a glue.
😇🩷🙏🙌
🙏🏻❤️🎨
Can you stop the design by gentle blow dry
Maybe, I've never tried it! If you do, let me know!
