I remember doing crayon resist in elementary school art class! We drew pictures w/crayolas, pressing very hard and then painted the back of the paper with a contrasting color so it would soak through where there was no crayon! Everyone loved that back then and I love that these techniques remind me of such fun so many years ago! Thanks and I can't wait to try this!
I love this technique and use it a lot to transform recycled papers such as packing paper, envelopes and bread bags. Crayola makes a Twistable Crayon that goes on smoothly without making annoying wax "crumbs". All crayons do not work equally well and these are a great choice.
Thank you Catherine … I always learn something new from you, and I’ve been an artist and teacher for 40 years!!! Such exciting techniques… I’m off to the studio x
I Am Thrilled to see You back Catherine🤩 You've been missed🧡 I Trust You had a Wonderful time off & that 2024 is Moving with Ease, Grace & Beauty for You! Thanks as always for the Exciting, Inspiring & Juicy tips🙏🏽🎨
Thanks so very much for the warm and loving welcome back! Grace and ease are two of my fave words. Love that you are on this explorative journey with me!
Loved this! Beyond the creative aspect you bring so much (common) sense to how you approach each technique always considering how you might use them in your collage art (e.g., using the 3 primaries, warm on warm, etc.). Be well.
You'll probably find tons of things to create these papers with. Once you start looking, everything becomes something to create a crayon resist paper with!
This was so much fun to play with. I actually have a pack of old crayons sitting around so tried rubbing on several different papers and got some pretty good results. Thanks for the idea!
I am so glad you’re back too! I have been watching a lot of your videos! Love how you try new experiments with your Art! It helps your followers learn to experiment too. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Cat, can’t wait to try this technique! I’m curious if you’ve tried any other markers such as Neocolors or oil pastels… or even chalk pastels. I’m off to the rabbit hole!
I have a stencil list with links where to buy them. Go to my website www.catherinerains.com, and click on the button at the top that says "supplies" . There you will find a downloadable Stencil list! Enjoy.
So glad you enjoyed the video. Yes I only use the side for rubbing. I guess you can use the tip as well, but you have a larger surface with the side, and thus it goes faster.
Bravo! Was wondering if you were going to try this on the medical exam paper but perhaps too fragile? Does the wax resist matt or gel medium when you are adhering it to the substrate?
Hey Robin! I haven't yet purchased that type of paper, but you just reminded me that I want to! I have glued many of these papers with medium and it works fine.
I've done it on fragile papers like recycled tissue paper. Curves and circles are less apt to tear fragile papers. You can pick up subtle patterns from everyday objects and rubber stamps.
What you refer to as an "embossing packet" or "embossing envelope" is much more widely known as an "embossing folder." I have quite a collection, and have been considering using them to create texture on the gel plate. I have done rubbings with them (and their predecessor, plastic texture plates from Provo Craft or Sizzix), though not using as refined a process as you show here. Having recently seen videos using Play-Doh to pick up textures and transfer them to the gel plate (which saves us the trouble of cleaning paint off the object being used-the paint just gets folded into the Play-Doh), I would probably do that rather than get paint on my embossing folders (though a quick wash with water before the paint dries should get most paint or ink off the plastic).
I assume you mean oil pastels? I think this would work, but since I haven't tried it, I'm not certain. I would love to hear your results after you experiment using these!
Catherine I hadn’t watched the video properly. I had missed the fact that you put the paper over the stencil and you wet the paper. So excited to try it. (that's what happens when you're in too much of a rush to go out and buy new stuff without listening to the instructions properly 🥰

You are such an excellent teacher. Thank you so much for sharing your processes so freely.
What a very kind thing to say. Thank you!

Hmmm, never heard about that type of crayon. Now I need to try it out! Thanks for sharing.

Cate, that is the highest compliment! Thanks so very much for trusting me with your art time. Cat

I appreciate your appreciation of how I do my art demos. Thanks so much for the kind words.
Thank you!! I enjoy your videos and have missed "Tune in Tuesdays"! The papers, as always are beautiful!!😊
Thanks so much for your kind words. I truly appreciate your support of Tune In!
So much fun! Can't wait to see what I have to make some crayon resists!

I haven't but now I want too! Especially the neocolors! Try and it let me know what happens, please!!!
Hi Catherine, I love your work! I would like to know, where did you get your dotted stencil? Thanks!
I have a stencil list with links where to buy them. Go to my website www.catherinerains.com, and click on the button at the top that says "supplies" . There you will find a downloadable Stencil list! Enjoy.
Such a great video thankyou! Do you only use the side of the crayon for rubbing?

Thank you! Wondering if a beeswax candle will work instead of a crayon. Will give that a try!
Although I haven't done it myself, I've heard that this also works. Let me know what happens with your happy experiments!
So much fun! I had a broken Connect 4 game I tried this with and got some lovely effects. I forgot to try Lego bases! Thanks for a great video.
What great ideas! So glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool. I am going to experiment with rubbing on water soluble oil pastel crayons and then just a wet brush and see how that comes out
Have fun! Let me know how it turns out for you!

@@robinalcorn5140 Very cool Robin!
Thank you so very much. This video is fantastic and true treasure of information and techniques 😊
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate your kind words 😊💖

Fantastic videos thank you. Is it possible to use pastels or would that not works?
