Dizzy Gillespie DID NOT teach Ella how to scat, it was innate in her. You cannot teach that. You can either do it or you can’t. Listen to Ella scatting one note samba with Joe Pass. She wasn’t taught that she could just do it. I like Pattie Austin very much, but she, like a lot of the American jazz singers, think they can all scat better than Ella and I find it embarrassing a lot of the time.
No mention of Sarah Vaughan -- one of the finest ladies to do it, and who actually played in Billy Eckstine's band with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in the 1940s. According to her biography ("The Queen of Bebop"), she couldn't play piano fast enough to keep up with them, so she used her "other instrument" to improvise in the bebop style they played at that time. Ella's improv actually mimics the sound of the swing-era big bands she performed with. All great stuff.
