Ella expressed joy, warmth and strength. There's a mother quality in her voice to me. It's an interesting contrast to Billie Holiday's broken voice who expressed vulnerability and rawness. The voice exposes the personality behind it.
Totally agree. She is the one of the only singers (Blossom Dearie excepted) that I've heard who maintained innocence and purity of sound to her voice as she aged. "The voice exposes the personality behind it." Right on.
Not only is Jazzmeia Horn a wonderful young jazz musician in her own right, who can wail with the best of them, she also has absorbed the spirit of the music, and she can explain it so well to others (to the extent such things can be explained) and better yet demonstrate it superbly.
OMG! THIS IS AMAZING TALENT! I was just scanning through some channels and was shocked when I came across this young lady! You are Amazing! Your talent can't be measured! Your skills are AWSOME! Thank you for sharing your talent!
Love to put on Ella records when I'm making dinner or relaxing. Such a beautiful, legendary and inspiring voice, and someone I really look up to in terms of mastering vocal performance.
My mom played her when I was a kid, and she was great! I love her version of "Night and Day" *"With the beet beet beet of the tom tom"* YO GO GIRL, YOU GOT IT!
Lovely heartfelt cometary it’s so important to understand the history of music its the path that leads to the present . Many modern churches are contemporary, they ignore the hymns of old it’s a slap in the face to the history of the music . I’m not opposed to what’s new but we should not discard the what’s come before.
Love this❣️you’re as beautiful as your voice. And your voice and rhythm and scat-ability is incredible. Thank you for sharing. I will listen ( a lot) and learn from you Jazzmeia. 🙏🏼
This video struck me because exactly what Jazzmeia described doing with Ella scat solos, I actually sit down and do with Jazzmeia scat solos... she is the face of modern vocal improvisation and I cannot get enough of her!
WOW! Yes, I did learn something new today! Thank you, Ms Horn! You have a beautiful voice, unique "signature" sound and an amazing, true-to-form outfit that is as ethnically and artsy as you are a musician. Thank you 3xs over!!! And thank you as well, NPR(!!!!!) for having this UA-cam series/channel!!!
Oh you did your homework! I hear many people TRY to invoke Ella, but most flunk. You are awesome! Your own style shines through but it is obvious you did your homework.
Amazing video! I thoroughly enjoyed this and really learned something. This woman is so dope and I'm glad she's expressing the importance of Queen Ella.
Though I am not into Jazz, this was quite awesome. - I had for many years have substituted the name of "Elephants Gerald", because it was funnier and easier to remember.
Did you know NPR that Ella's promoter the only living jazz promoter Audrey P. Franklyn is still alive and active? You should have her on to talk about Ella, Norman Granz and her years of being with Ella until she passed. Please dont ignore this message . Aydrey is the only one left and has some fun and heart filled stories about this arrist.
Speaking of her, when are we getting her tiny desk??

All great musicians know their history, and understand how the greats did what they did... even if they don't use it.

I’m getting more and more interested in jazz ❤️ and his culture ✨
