  • Returning to my favourite River, the River Chess I fish on a balmy June day in a river diminished by low water and too much abstraction. In this video I show you around my favourite river which has great seasons and poor seasons, manage a WBT and get harassed by a Swan.
Due to being inside the flight path for Heathrow there is a lot of airplane noise so reluctantly I am using more background music than I normally would.
My channel is called Cornish Chris the Fish. I am a Cornishman venturing out beyond the Duchy to experience life on the road full time touring in my Caravan Dalleth Arta, fly fishing and vlogging my adventure. I am a novice Salmon Fisherman so join me as I experience the topsy turvey world of Salmon Fishing. I am charting my fishing adventures and will profile each fishery that I attend. I may even catch a few fish 😀

I walked it all today. Exactly same stretch.
You will not catch them there pal. I know. Used to catch 10 a day. After trout farm before chesham dump leaked them all from severe flooding.
Bread sinking down past thick flowing weed beds (few and far between) as shallow due to aquifer extraction.
Flinging it up against the current under a bridge was guaranteed.
I caught lots under queen's head pub in old chesham. Under the main roundabout at chesham united entrance. 7lb . Had to get in to get it out.
Holloway and Blackwell Hall Lane also.
It dried out several times up from chesham united roundabout.
I saw a salmon rushing near dump. About 10lb
Rainbow trout aswell as brown the native.
There's a spring in pednor past fields through tennis club. It literally sprang out of ground.
It runs from the Vale under Berkhampstead Rd to park pond. Entry and release gates full of silt prevent flow to vet pond.

Welcome to the UK!! Tough time to fish the UK at the moment, high temperatures and very low water, not planning to fish the chess again for a few months due to the poor conditions - tight lines!

@@ethansul5578 well that is the million dollar question! we've had a couple of very poor years lately. The Chess itself is a river that is slowly recovering after the water authority has "promised" to clean up it's act. Probably better to fish the river at the start of the season normally around the beginning of May but obviously weather and rainfall in the winter will effect this. Suggest you look at fishpal.com which is a great place to find day tickets. Most of these of course are in Scotland and the north of England but it might be worth venturing a bit further afield for some better sport. Best of luck, Chris

Hi Chris ,lovely wee river but what a shame about the abstraction problem. The Clyde has plenty of Swans to that expect to be fed,a real bugger when they come over to you when you are covering some fish and scare them all.Can I make a suggestion, you need to keep a much tighter line as your fly comes back to you, very hard to make a quick strike and connect with the fish 🐟.Please check out Gundog and Fly,his information about the slack line and missing fish is spot on.Loving all you are sharing with us fellow Fluff chuckers all the best, cheers.

Such a beautiful river! It's a shame that the rivers aren't looked afted as much anymore. Great video buddy!👌 I plan to fish there soon!

Thanks Chris, it was interesting to see a river of a similar size to the one I fish in Devon, thankfully without the abstraction problem. Your video really did drive the message home.

I'm assuming that's the Chess in the Chilterns. A magical little river and fortunately, there is a group that works hard to preserve and protect it (see their Facebook page). I used to fish the free stretch outside Rickmansworth and had some nice trout to 1lb plus. It was rare outside mayfly time to see more than one fish on a visit, but that made it all the more special when you did catch. I retired and left London last year. My local river is now the Test, although most of it is too rich for my blood. I intend to pay the Chess a visit come mayfly time this year. Tight lines.

Why are you not retrieving line to keep in contact with the fly? You have a heap of slack.

A nasty habit I have picked up. Alot of subscribers have also picked me up on it. I am not sure when i started doing it. I used to always concentrate on the line. When i started doing this channel my goal was to film the ups and downs of fishing from the perspective of an average fisherman. I have never claimed to be an expert. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on my video.

Pfft! It's always the same innit. It's who you know. There's a water I've been trying to get a rod on for over a decade, but it's been made clear that you can only get in if you're already a member. You might have a better chance though, so if I bung you a fiver maybe you could put a word in for me?

Yeah maybe but also being in the right place at the right time and being persistent.
