    Hi, I'm a bit confused. Are you only supposed to tie the string around the extension bar? Or are you supposed to tie it around the back near the big wheels or the front? Can you show us a more detailed way to add the string please.

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 місяців тому +1

      Tie it to the end of the extension are. The other end will be wrapped around the back axle kind of like a yoyo 🪀 except that the string lets go when it reaches the end. The hammer will pull the extension arm - which will pull the string - which will make the back axle spin. When the string lets go, momentum continues to carry the vehicle along.

      @@MrK_Engineering Ok so I should stick the bar and the golden part of the mousetrap together and tie the string at the end of the bar and and wrap it around the back of the axle where you put your big wheels. And when I release it will propel the car forward?

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 місяців тому

      @@shielsingh9602 It should. Remember that the spring is not really a strong tool. You don’t want friction between the wheels and straw. If there is ANY hot glue touching the metal axles, it will cause too much friction for the vehicle to move. Neatness matters on the build. 😅

    Where would I find the metal arm at a store/are there any replacements I could use?

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому +2

      I use a metal hanger from my closet. I use a pare if pliers and cut it to the size I want. I can also use the pliers make sure it is straight (if you want it to be straight - you might ‘want’ a bend it it...).
      Remember that the arm is easy to replace if it does not do what you want to to....

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  3 роки тому +2

      You are right. I did not. If I had to make it again, I might include that part. You are wrapping it like you would wind a yo-yo 🪀- just don’t tie it in a knot. You want the string to come free at the end so momentum will carry the vehicle further.

    What is the name for of the wheels and axles you used because I can’t find them.

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  3 роки тому

      I get them from pitsco.com.
      The wheels are “X-White wheels”. www.pitsco.com/Shop/Dragsters/Materials-and-Supplies/Wheels/X-White-Wheels
      The axles are “2.5 inch steel axles”.
      www.pitsco.com/Shop/Dragsters/CO2-Powered/Steel-Axles
      You can use other things like wheels from discarded toys, and metal hangers cut to the right size for axles.

    What can you use to replace the wheel and axle or where do you find the axle

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому

      Stephanie Boakye so, basically, the only real thing you need is any wheel, and any axle. I have used old toys, and removed the wheels and used wooden dowels as the axles. The key to remember is that the axle needs a straw to go around it so you can reduce friction. Good luck.

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому

      Aubeena bear That is the challenge, you might need to do some experimentation to see which arm works better. They are fairly easy to add and remove. I wish you luck in reaching your distance goal. I know the 10 m is not an insurmountable distance, And have had students of mine go much further than that. The key factors are friction and alignment.

    Does the mouse trap have to be on the side or in the middle

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  4 роки тому

      If the mousetrap is further away from the back axle, it will be a longer, slower pull. The string will be longer, so it will wrap more times around the back axle. If the mousetrap is closer to the back axle, it will be a shorter, faster pull. The string will be shorter, and wrap fewer times around the back axle. Hope this helps!

    What are the metal rods, is there a certain name?

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому +1

      There is a metal rod which is the “axle” for the wheel and axle assembly. And there is a metal rod which is the “arm” attached to the hammer of the mousetrap. Hope that is what you were asking. I can’t think of another metal piece on the vehicle...

    When it shows arm length what is it measuerd by

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  4 роки тому

      Anguelica Aguilar The metal bars are made from coat hangers. I used a wire cutter (pliers) to cut the correct length. On the video they are measured in inches. You should make it the length you want it to be. The longer the arm, the longer the pull - the shorter the arm, the faster the pull.

    thanks for the tutorial but my mousetrap is on the back of my racer and this a science assigment of mine... how do i make it go, and how do i tue the string and where do i tie it?

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому

      Doctor H and kids so, my first question is “is the tail of the mousetrap pointing towards the back?” If it is, “can you see (touch) the back axle from the top?”
      If yes to both, tie the string to the hammer, and (not tied) wrapped around the back axle.
      Hope this helps. If you need more advice, write back.

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому +1

      Doctor H and kids if the snappy thing (the hammer) is facing the front when it is at rest, then you are ok. Tie the string to the flat part of the hammer (the snappy thing). The string will need to be about 6 inches long. Glue it so it does not move around.
      You will have to hold it back (pressure on the spring) while you wrap the string around the back wheels & axle. Once it is tangled onto the back axle, it should roll forward when you let go.

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому

      Doctor H and kids if you want it to go further, you are going to have to break the mousetrap off and move it to the front of the vehicle.

    It should be fine without the string right?

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  9 місяців тому

      The string is the thing that makes the vehicle actually move. The string (wrapped around the back axle) pulls on the axle, causing it to roll when the spring pulls on the string. So, you must have something to attach the mousetrap hammer which pulls on the back axle... good luck!

      Lauren Rodriguez I bought them from Pitsco.com. But you can use wheels and axles from old toys. The axles should be about 1/8” in diameter. You can also use cardboard and hot glue to attach the CD’s to the axles. Hope this helps.

    How long should I choose for my arm?

    • @MrK_Engineering
      @MrK_Engineering  5 років тому +2

      Great question. Think about how fast a short stick would swing compared to a long stick. The longer stick will pull slow and longer, giving a longer pull on the string. The shorter string will pull faster but shorter.
      Will the faster car coast further?
      Will the slower car go further under power?
      The experiment is up to you, the arms are easily changed. Try some different lengths and see which one performs better.
      Good luck!
