Hi, I'm a bit confused. Are you only supposed to tie the string around the extension bar? Or are you supposed to tie it around the back near the big wheels or the front? Can you show us a more detailed way to add the string please.
Tie it to the end of the extension are. The other end will be wrapped around the back axle kind of like a yoyo 🪀 except that the string lets go when it reaches the end. The hammer will pull the extension arm - which will pull the string - which will make the back axle spin. When the string lets go, momentum continues to carry the vehicle along.
@@MrK_Engineering Ok so I should stick the bar and the golden part of the mousetrap together and tie the string at the end of the bar and and wrap it around the back of the axle where you put your big wheels. And when I release it will propel the car forward?
@@shielsingh9602 It should. Remember that the spring is not really a strong tool. You don’t want friction between the wheels and straw. If there is ANY hot glue touching the metal axles, it will cause too much friction for the vehicle to move. Neatness matters on the build. 😅
It should be fine without the string right?
The string is the thing that makes the vehicle actually move. The string (wrapped around the back axle) pulls on the axle, causing it to roll when the spring pulls on the string. So, you must have something to attach the mousetrap hammer which pulls on the back axle... good luck!
What’s up Mr. Hammond’s class - Period 3, 2022
I hope your doing well mr k
I’m getting better! Thanks for the kind thoughts.

I miss this wonderful moments, hope you are doing good Mr.K
It is so wonderful to hear from you! Miss all of my previous students! Hope you are doing well yourself!
@@MrK_Engineering Sure thing, it was such a fun class. I'm doing great, thank you, hope you are also going well and I hope to visit

???
That's crazy
Is this a psyop?
I have made the Fancy Cup on my 3D printer and it turned out OK. But i did not have time for the students to do it, as we were not allowed to "share" devices this last year. It can be done, but as you know, "Print time" for something like this is very time consuming, about 2 days worth of straight printing. BUT, it was a great project for them to do in Onshape, and really taught them the different tools usage.
@@MrK_Engineering Honestly I'm just relived to see that you seem to be a real person. I wasn't expecting to get recommended that video. Cool project. Those tools are really valuable and I'm sure your students got a lot out of learning them from a competent instructor.
Hello Meason....how long/how much time do you allow for students to complete the fancy cube? 90 minutes? 180 minutes? Thanks!
Great question. During COVID it was a whole lot of time, but in class, I think they could get it done in about 180 to 200 min with some flex time for those who require extra help. For your high flyers, you might have them create a place to hold the Fancy Cube - table, shelf, Dragon Pedestal? Gives them room to express their creativity.
@@MrK_Engineering thank you...great work! PS - what about your Automata?? How long for that one? It looks like a great project!
@@jhammons1000 well, it took a LONG time last year. This year I think it will about 4 days total, but maybe another week for the building the real thing. Kits for the frame from the store at PLTW.com
I have no idea what’s going on but I feel like I gained brain volume
Thank you. Using this for class.
Love it! That is why I made it.
What is the name for of the wheels and axles you used because I can’t find them.
I get them from pitsco.com. The wheels are “X-White wheels”. www.pitsco.com/Shop/Dragsters/Materials-and-Supplies/Wheels/X-White-Wheels The axles are “2.5 inch steel axles”. www.pitsco.com/Shop/Dragsters/CO2-Powered/Steel-Axles You can use other things like wheels from discarded toys, and metal hangers cut to the right size for axles. Hope this helps,
Thank you !!!
I like the tutorial but you left out how to properly wound the string around the back axle.
You are right. I did not. If I had to make it again, I might include that part. You are wrapping it like you would wind a yo-yo 🪀- just don’t tie it in a knot. You want the string to come free at the end so momentum will carry the vehicle further.
If it need to go 20m how long does it have to be
Good question. Longer is better. It will go slow, but the string will pull longer and make the axle spin for a longer time.
Lookin good there man!
Having a ball! But teaching during COVID-19 is really not fun!!!!
Hi Mr.k, I remember being in your 6th period class and just wanted to tell you that you were an amazing teacher and didn't like how most of the students didn't pay attention to you and make you frustrated MULTIPLE TIMES. Anyways, I will never forget time you pulled me aside from my group after one of my partners did something wrong and told me that I passed the project, it was programming a lego robot to pick up items and take them to a certain place, because you saw that I was the only one who was actually working and that my partners weren't doing their work. Just wanted to say that I appreciated that and hope you have great rest of your career Mr.K😁

thx mr. kolkhorst
Hi me k
Vision 21st that’s Mr. K. to you,sir. 🤪
I don’t even remember lol
When it shows arm length what is it measuerd by
Anguelica Aguilar The metal bars are made from coat hangers. I used a wire cutter (pliers) to cut the correct length. On the video they are measured in inches. You should make it the length you want it to be. The longer the arm, the longer the pull - the shorter the arm, the faster the pull. Hope this helps!
I’m the first viewer😁
thanks dued for the video you made. it will help me out what I'm doing in computer engineering hope the first attempt works out the way I wanted :) your way building a mouse trap car is way easier then the other videos I watched so far. finding video ideas on how to fully build a ("mouse trap car").....
Sergio Reynoso I hope it works for you as well! Please you let me know how it goes! Good luck!
This is gonna be me and my partners 3rd attempt in making a car. fingers crossed 🤞🏾
IrregularAurora good luck!!!
Does the mouse trap have to be on the side or in the middle
If the mousetrap is further away from the back axle, it will be a longer, slower pull. The string will be longer, so it will wrap more times around the back axle. If the mousetrap is closer to the back axle, it will be a shorter, faster pull. The string will be shorter, and wrap fewer times around the back axle. Hope this helps!
Meason Kolkhorst thank you!
Oofy
Myles what are you doing here?
Poopity Poop
I think it's creative using popsicle sticks instead of pieces of wood for the base.
What can you use to replace the wheel and axle or where do you find the axle
Stephanie Boakye so, basically, the only real thing you need is any wheel, and any axle. I have used old toys, and removed the wheels and used wooden dowels as the axles. The key to remember is that the axle needs a straw to go around it so you can reduce friction. Good luck.
Meason Kolkhorst thank you so much
Where would I find the metal arm at a store/are there any replacements I could use?
I use a metal hanger from my closet. I use a pare if pliers and cut it to the size I want. I can also use the pliers make sure it is straight (if you want it to be straight - you might ‘want’ a bend it it...). Remember that the arm is easy to replace if it does not do what you want to to....
How long should I choose for my arm?
Great question. Think about how fast a short stick would swing compared to a long stick. The longer stick will pull slow and longer, giving a longer pull on the string. The shorter string will pull faster but shorter. Will the faster car coast further? Will the slower car go further under power? The experiment is up to you, the arms are easily changed. Try some different lengths and see which one performs better. Good luck!
Our chair could not be defeated 😂
Chairlie has been used a whole bunch this year, and many of the kids are looking at your chair for ideas!!!!! you guys did a great job!
