OK here’s the thing, I am a 73-year-old grown man who is lying here with tears running down my face after listening to and watching this stunning performance by the one and only Mahalia Jackson. I grew up in a household where Miss Jackson‘s records were being played constantly so I have been a great fan all my life. Whenever she appeared on television you could not find one person on the street in my little hometown of Clinton Missouri. Everyone was glued to the TV watching this marvelous woman of God perform. I have never seen this particular performance until I discovered it here while UA-cam surfing! Thank you so much for this posting. I have been moved many times by beautiful music, but something about this performance, especially when you look at Miss Jackson‘s face and see that she truly believes what she is singing, Well I found myself unable to contain my emotions or stop the tears from flowing. I suppose at this age and being a grown man I should be somewhat ashamed to admit that, but somehow I am not! Mahalia, what a gift you are to us!
Ms. Mahalia Jackson was my ex-wife's Auntie on her late mother's side of the Family from New Orleans, LA. God rest her soul. So so glad that Mr. Studs Terkel and others did so much to preserve, protect and defend Mahalia and her music. She is a national treasure and a crown jewel to music. God rest her weary soul. Amen.
I can listen to this song all day and cry. Simple but such an anointing on the voice and lyrics. Looking forward to meeting my Friend Jesus. One day when I walk around that bend who will be there to welcome me, MY FRIEND. Hallelujah
Man I tell you I'm 21 years old and I listen to what I call great music as far as jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Country even classical and I tell you she's the greatest AND she only sang one genre of music (Gospel) and she's my favorite singer then there's everyone else no questions Asked! Also, I read her biography, seen all her intervews, listened to all her music, and it seems like her soul was spotless as if she was an angel from GOD Listen to that VOICE
Wow. I know that was truly a Blessing to be in the house with her. Mahalia's singing has always touched my heart. I am still listening....this song was new to me. I found on UA-cam. Another chance to cry some more. I am sure she is singing in the Heavenly choir. Her body may be absent but, her spirit lives with every song she sung. Thank God for Halie.
She was a wonderful testament to what faith represents in the Christian life, she was a genuinely nice woman and funny too. I remember she would sneak me cake when my grandmother wasn't looking! Smiles..... I was devastated by our loss of her. Oh, my I mourned for years as she is one of the first personal deaths that I experienced in my youth. She died Jan. 27th of 1972, my great grandfather passed in Jan. of 1973 he was 108 yrs. old and she would come by the house keep company with him. RIP!
oh lord thank you for being more than my friend, I love you lord Jesus and I am not ashamed of you I'm my life today, because you have proved to be more than a friend, without you I'd be lost in the darkness forever.
MAHALIA JACKSON ONCE DESCRIBED HERSELF AS UNEDUCATED, BUT I THINK THE LYRICS SHE SUNG AND HER SINCERITY AND PASSION AND EXPRESSION OF GODS LOVE, , AND SCRIPTURES OF THE TRUTH OF GODS WORDS HER SINGING IF THE WORDS WERE GATHERED WHOLEY WITH HER SINCERE EMOTIONS AND TESTIMONIES WOULD CREATE A BOOK NOTHING LESS THAN A TEACHERS. EDUCATION, THAT'S WHAT I THINK SINCERELY. THANK YOU MISS MAHALIA JACKSON A PIONEER OF HER TIME AND A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR ALL NATIONALITIES TO FOLLOW. I WONDER CAN ANYBODY ELSE POSSIBLY BE IN HER LEAGUE BE THEY MALE OR FEMALE.. THANKYOU JESUS FOR MAHALIA JACKSON AND GLORY BE TO GOD AHMEN..
Is this just a live performance? Or is there a recording of it (LP or CD or whatever..) I'm born two generations after Mahalia and it's hard to get her songs.. And I love this one.
Are you from New Orleans as well. Sounds like she was really tight with your family. How did you all know each other. I am an intrigued fan so I hope you are not offended.
My friend is the king of all kings And yet my friend walks beside me My friend rules the earth and the sun And yet my friend stops to guide me My friend takes my hand just when all appears in vain And makes it plain, through joy or pain He'll remain my friend My friend tells me life is a road And though it ends at the bending My friend tells me then there's a road beyond this road that is unending Some day when I walk up that happy road that lies around the bend Who will there be to welcome me My friend Who will there be to welcome me My friend written in the early 1950's by Erwin Drake and Jimmy Shirl
