Not completely, there's a chrome extension to add back functionality. Everyone using the extensions can hit it and it will be shown to everyone else with the extension. It also has all the dislikes from before the removal

another fun fact: on mobile if you click and hold the share, remix and save to playlist buttons they all shrink while you hold them. that is not the case for the download button, which unlike the other ones it glows a bit. i noticed this a whole 6 months ago and it hasn't been fixed lol.
I think know how they managed to this. UA-cam auto generates a transcript for every video so they can use it for Auto Generated subtitles. Each phrase is paired with a specific timestamp of the video. So when you’re watching a video and hit the same timestamp on the transcript when someone says the words “like” or “subscribe”, the animation plays.
That's actually pretty sick! Although youtube should start improving their website beyond a silly like button feature. edit: wtf happened with the likes here

Yeah i just found out about it when i decided to watch a vid. And i thought i was lowkey hallucinating so i had to replay it a coupleof times to get my senses together.
I had always thought youtubers chose the minute where that button would glow, like an option that said "When do you want the like button to glow?" and you chose a minute like 0:15, 1:10, 3:20, something like that.
It's amazing to me that people are discussing the merits of a system that can analyse every word spoken on a video as though it isn't a dystopian nightmare.
The system doesn't understand the words. It can't analyse anything, it can only make assumptions based on an ever increasing set of data. Plus, it's amazingly helpful to have automatically generated closed captions (which is the same system) for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or simply in a loud room. Eventually, we might get automatically generated translated captions, so you could watch a youtube video in russian without knowing any russian. That would be really cool. :D As long as we use these systems for good, everything is great! Nothing about this is inherently evil, especially since everything on youtube was intentially put there by someone. Worrying about this is just as dumb as worrying about pencils, because, with a pencil, you can write down plans to revolt against...society or something.

If you want a system to complain about, go complain about something like ai generated art, or the ai that imitates real people's voices. Both these systems actively hurt a huge section of people just by existing and have virtually no redeeming qualities. Plenty of bad actors have already taken advantage of these systems to mixed results. I'm curious what you think bad people are going to do with automatic closed captioning, anyways. ofcourse, youtube is using the incredible speech recognition for detecting when people ask to like, and not for making the subtitles actually work properly.
@@Ratz99They're genuinely really good captions though, especially compared with what else is out there. There's a LOT going on behind the scenes with youtube's system that lets it recognise weird words like autismophrenia as long as they've shown up in enough places on the platform, and it "understands" a lot of context clues, which is just a monumental achievement if you've ever tried to get a computer to understand fuckin' anything except for beep and boop. Google is putting its incomprehensibly large eldritch data monstrosity to pretty good use here, I'll give them that.
So basically when the video plays, the live transcript feed runs in parallel with the video's playback and when it gets to the word 'like' the page's JS triggers the button animation. Really cool.

I've also noticed that the creator of a video can make the title of the video change while the video is progressing, so it will start off as one thing and partway through the video title changes, likely to match what you're seeing in the video at the time.
@@1Suckat3v3yth1ng I haven't seen it being done lately so maybe that feature was removed, but there were several videos I watched a couple months ago where the title seemed like it had changed once or twice halfway or a third of the way through the video.

Seeing this feature for the first time has a surprising effect.
Imagine saying "skip ads" in a vid only for UA-cam to hit you up with an ad (for non-premium users) and REMOVE this skip button rendering unskippable.

Yeah it reads the transcript and checks for one of those words. If it detects one well then you know the like or subscribe button glows
The UA-cam algorithm detects whenever audio from the video is saying either, "Subscribe," or "Like" and makes the related button glow.

If you want a system to complain about, go complain about something like ai generated art, or the ai that imitates real people's voices. Both these systems actively hurt a huge section of people just by existing and have virtually no redeeming qualities. Plenty of bad actors have already taken advantage of these systems to mixed results.

From that information, it could be activated on a timestamp set by the uploader, who, after watching their own video, might know when in the video the thing happens.

I just noticed this on my own. Same if you say “like this video”. If you say “subscribe to the channel” the sub button also glows
ofcourse, youtube is using the incredible speech recognition for detecting when people ask to like, and not for making the subtitles actually work properly.

@@Ratz99They're genuinely really good captions though, especially compared with what else is out there. There's a LOT going on behind the scenes with youtube's system that lets it recognise weird words like autismophrenia as long as they've shown up in enough places on the platform, and it "understands" a lot of context clues, which is just a monumental achievement if you've ever tried to get a computer to understand fuckin' anything except for beep and boop. Google is putting its incomprehensibly large eldritch data monstrosity to pretty good use here, I'll give them that.

I've also noticed that the creator of a video can make the title of the video change while the video is progressing, so it will start off as one thing and partway through the video title changes, likely to match what you're seeing in the video at the time.
