What strikes me about this video is that the extraordinary music and lyrics of Gilbert & Sullivan give such wonderful opportunities to singers of so many backgrounds and in so many eras to give brilliant performances. The music here is lovely. Truly lovely. Perhaps "Yeoman of the Guard" and "Mikado" should be thought of as yardsticks to measure contemporary artists. Yes, you can sing "Baby Kiss Me Now" (or whatever... I made that up), but can you sing "Is Life A Boon?" or "Tis Done, I Am A Bride"? Of course, some shouldn't attempt this. Yes, I am looking at you, Groucho (as Koko).
The clips available on UA-cam from this TV production make you wonder why nobody has thought to publish the whole thing. Tommy Steele is excellent. The Brent Walker version features Joel Grey in the role, and his portrayal has a lot less charm.
Wonderful actors and singers ... my very favourite version ever!
Excellent harmonies here, better than some recordings I have listened to.
The echo effect of their voices is haunting. You can hear it most clearly around the two minute mark. It adds an ethereal quality to the scene.
It's amazing - Tommy Steele is so versatile - he can sing songs like Flash Bang Wallop, and G and S too - a very talented gentleman!
Remembered Tommy Steele as a pop singer - a great discovery!
A wonderful rendition of a timeless song. Bravo!

Oh, poor Jack...
Tommy is the only pop singer who has ever been good in G&S.

Rest of cast.................?
Perfectly good cast .... but completely outclassed by Tommy steel. WS Gilbert would have cast hin ahead of George Grossmith!! 😊
Della Jones as Phoebe?
Yup. Did a great job too!
They've over-mic'ed Steele, so the blend is off. I'm sure his voice would have carried just fine, even with these classically-trained singers.
