    What a coincidence I think UA-cam is spying on me even when my phone is off. I was talking to someone today about why my sofa & chair looks so beautiful like they just came out of the factory. They had to dye the leather full aniline it's the color of an eggplant and is as soft as butter . It's took 8 weeks and it is 20 years old. It looks brand new because it's been conditioned monthly. I totally love it and it wasn't cheap you really get what you pay for. I'm interested in if it gets torn moving from one part of the house to the other by people who don't appreciate leather. Is there a specific way of fixing a tear because throwing a chair away is not an option and it's not a very big tear. I love you videos. You get right to the point and you calm which is really what I need right now. I am a subscriber

    • @wilsjane

      Your comment about spying really made me laugh. While it is illegal to tap a phone without permission from a judge and it is technically impossible for it to record and transmit when it is turned off, this subject is continuously being discussed.
      In reality, at some point in recent weeks, you have been researching leather on Google or You-tube. With 400 hours of videos uploaded every minute, believe me, them using search engine technology on accounts is vital for your enjoyment and sanity when searching for interesting videos.
      The one down side is when searching for a special present for your loved one, adverts and videos will be giving the game away all the time.
      When it comes to legality, the system also works well, eliminating people who have stumbled on material on odd occasions. It then helps in putting the people who spend all day looking at child pornography or how to build terrorist bombs behind bars. Spending all day researching how to import large quantities of illegal drugs may also get you on the radar. LOL
      Here in the west, everyday people have nothing to fear from all this technology.

    The terminology is presented in a way that could make people misunderstand leather qualities. “Full-grain” is technically a higher grade of leather than “Top Grain”. See other “Leather types” videos before going off of this information.

      Top grain and Full grain are one. The only difference is true full grain tends to be unprotected and more like suede in look. I really find it amusing how people always try to overcomplicate things to confuse people. Full grain leather is wonderful however it is also very suspect to staining and marking because essentially unprotected leather and we wold not recommend in a family room or everyday traffic . Top Grain is the top layer of the animal and is used for full grain.

    Boss you provide an EXCELLENT PRESENTATION. I have seen many many well renowned public speakers talk on a varied gammot of topics. My point is...do many more videos on anything and everyhing you can think of an post them often. You will see subscription numbers increase, your profits increass from not only on UA-cam but also your personal business. Have you heard of TED? Check it out. I see you traveling, speaking and inspiring others less calm, collected, organized thoughts, content etc etc to continue their dream about public speaking. Trust me on this...sometimes someone can just look, listen and hear someone they just met and see things, much like a vision that no one else can sense.
    I see that in you if you pursue it, enjoy it, and love what you do. If you can manage that making a above average income to live comfortably is what you will have created. My best to you.

    This is misleading.
    First off, yes you're correct in categorizing Full Grain under the umbrella of Top Grain. Technically, unless leather is a Suede or Split, all leathers would be considered Top Grain.
    For this reason, Top Grain and Full Grain wouldn't have a difference in texture. It's only products that are marketed as "Top Grain" and not Full Grain, where they are corrected and finished, that would have a different surface texture. You are mixing up technical facts VS marketing terms but not speaking on it.

    this is wrong, top grain leather isn't fully undoctored, the top part been sanded and finished (often coated with plastic) to get the uniform look

    You say full grain originates *from* top grain - but, isn't it the other way around???? The full grain is "right from the cow" so to speak - complete with marks and imperfections. The top grain comes off of the full grain (when they remove the uppermost layer of the full grain?) ("originates to" isn't really a meaningful phrase - it's not correct English - one thing "originates *from* another, not "to")

    • @Hattonbank
      @Hattonbank 3 роки тому

      Hi Patricia,
      During the initial stages of tanning, the hide is about 5-6mm thick.
      To make it useable, it passes over a fast moving thin belt type of knive which splits it into two halves.
      The bottom half is the split, useable only where no tension or strength is required, such as the rear of seats/sofas.
      The top haslf is known as the top grain.
      If the hide is of lower to average quality, such as most Brazilian hides which suffer from bites, scratches etc, it is lightly sanded to remove the worst of the marks, but this degrades the surfae somewhat, because that upper part of the skin, just like in human skin, is where the strength is. This hide is then known as a corrected hide, no longer a full grain hide.
      It is then usually embossed with an artificial grain to give it a unique pattern, usually an automotive manufacturers design. This is known as a corrected embossed grain.
      In the auto sector, these are widely used by Ford/GM/Peugeot/Fiat/Volvo. They have a good coating of paint and clear coat protective leather. The embossing and the amount of paint and lacquer makes the leather stiffer but more durable.
      Some top grains that are not of the best quality are never corrected but are still embossed with a grain. This is a position that companies like BMW/Audi/Mercedes adhere to for their lower priced trim level variants..
      They therefore still have a top grain that is full grain even though it has an artificial grain embossed onto it.
      The leathers that are embossed with a grain are usually applied to the seat facings (fronts), the sides and backs of the seats are usually look a like PVC
      The better top grains are kept for the best leathers, in Germany, known as Nappa. It is the top grain, with no sanding, just natural, and no embossing, just the real natural finish.
      These leather types are used in the premium Jags, Range Rovers, BMW/Mercs/Lincolns/Caddies, etc. They have less paint and lacquer which means less protection, but the upside is they look and feel much nicer. Seats with this type of leather are usually 80% plus leather with PVC only used in nonvisible areas of the seat
      There is also a higher specification in the auto industry known as semi aniline which uses top grain of the highest surface quality with next to zero imperfections. It has less paint and lacquer still and as a result is ultra soft, albeit trading a little durability for that extra softness.
      These leathers are used on tio\op line Jaguar XJ, Range Rover, Rolls, Bentley, Aston Martin.These seats are 100% leather
      The auto industry has a clear leather structure well explained whereas the furniture industry is wide open to using so many different types that even the salesmen often do not know what they are selling.
      I hope that this helps but if you have any more questions, please contact me.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Question please, regarding 0:54. Are you saying that after the full grain is split into two (as demonstrated in the graphic), the resulting top layer is then also split into two? Resulting in a thinner top layer and a middle layer?

    • @canadasbossleatherfurnitur1415
      @canadasbossleatherfurnitur1415 5 років тому +1

      Well >Top Layer is all we use that is why it is referred to as Top Grain leather. Now the thickness varies but usually above industry standards where we are concerned. We have a ten year warranty on all Our goods because of it.

    • @Hattonbank
      @Hattonbank 3 роки тому +1

      When the top grain is separated from the lower half (the split) the back side of it can be shaved by running over a set of rotating blades to shave it to the desired thickness. It does not produce another split because it is shaved into tiny shavings, almost dust like.
      Automotive and aerospace users generally specify a nominal 1.2mm thickness, therefore to get to this reduced and more specific thickness, it has to be shaved.

    Great video - what leather would you recommend for a family with kids and a dog please? I'm in Uk but all the terms you are using are familiar to me. Really informative video as I was in a store yesterday and online the sofa was listed as semi aniline -upholstered in quality, thick corrected grain 100% leather yet in store the person told me it was split - this put me right off. Thanks in advance and thanks for taking the time to share some knowledge.

    • @canadasbossleatherfurnitur1415
      @canadasbossleatherfurnitur1415 5 років тому +3

      You should look for top grain leather semi aniline leather for everyday. Test by spilling a drop of water on and if it rolls off you are good to go. If you take your finger nail and scratch sample if it marks easily stay away from that as well.

    Where would the term "pigmented leather" fall in the categories you described for us?

    • @leatherboss1356
      @leatherboss1356 6 років тому

      pigmented leather is basically painted not drum dyed leather

    • @leatherboss1356
      @leatherboss1356 6 років тому

      we do not use pigmented leather we cannot guarantee that the finish will last

    • @canadasbossleatherfurnitur1415
      @canadasbossleatherfurnitur1415 5 років тому

      PIGMENTED LEATHER. Usually pigmented leather is done on split hides so the disadvantage to that split leather has a shorter life span because all the protectants and ingredients to make a leather durable really do not stick. Also Pigmented means painted not dyed so really an inferior product when compared to aniline or top grain leather. The shelf life of pigmented leather usually runs two to 4 years.
