This was the closing number for a tribute show where George was awarded ACM Artist of the Decade (this was in 2009 I believe) - all those behind him had performed during the show. Lee Ann Womack sang a song she wrote for this show - "Just Stand There And Sing" perfectly describing how in a time when other artists were adding all kinds of flash and flare to their stage shows, George continued to "just stand there and sing" his songs (to sell out crowds no less). Yeah, there's a reason he's the King.

  • @shellywernette4449
    @shellywernette4449 Рік тому +20

"Respected" is the perfect word for him. And it's not just the caliber of his music. It's about how steadily true he has been to his own simple country style throughout all the changes in the industry. It's also about how he comports himself on and off stage: no scandal, no disorderly conduct, no drinking or marital problems - he leaves the tour, goes home, and hangs out on the ranch. I work at his alma mater where he first formed his band, and they love him so much there (his degree was actually in agriculture because his background is in that world). I take my class on fieldtrips to an off campus site he helped set up through an endowment for agricultural and wildlife/natural studies. The school gave him an honorary doctorate; rumor is he humbly tried to turn it down, but they insisted and said he was getting it whether he showed up for the ceremony or not.

Blake Shelton was with Miranda Lambert before he got with Gwen.
If you want to hear a song from her, "Mr. Tinman" is pretty great. She wrote that one after they divorced.. I think even performed it at the award show with Blake in the audience. Gwen might've been in the audience too. I can't remember.

Britt, to put it simply, a troubadour was a person who performed songs and poems and traveled from town to town performing. The pretty blonde next to Blake was his then wife who is a huge country star Miranda Lambert. Gwen is actually his 3rd wife. This was a tribute show as I believe George had been named Entertainer of the decade. All these folks are huge George Strait fans and all performed George's hits on this special, and then came back out to do the finale with him. The song you probably heard Leanne do was her cover of Blue.

Troubadour came out when King George decided that he was going to seriously cut back on his touring. Some mistakenly thought that he was retiring, but he kept performing when and where he wanted. That included a stint in Las Vegas and some appearances in his native Texas.

I know you don't do movie reactions, but you might want to watch his movie Pure Country. I don't think movie reactors could do it because their is so much of him singing that copyright would mute most of the movie. But it's a beautiful love story. The plot is he has become wary of all the glits and showmanship of touring. He ups and walks away, then meets a woman that doesn't know who he is and falls in love

This is a teaching opportunity that I would like to exploit. Mr. Strait, like myself, is from south Texas and the real thing in that he, too, was raised on a cattle ranch and is not, as the saying goes, "All hat and no cattle." It is important to mention at this point that he had been singing in dance halls in and around Texas for years before having his first recording published and released in 1981. Prior to that time, there had been on the radio, "Country and Western" music and there were "C&W" clubs and dance halls too. Great vocalists from Texas like Dan Seals, Paul Davis and elsewhere, including Michael Martin Murphey, were told to "...loose the hat!" They did and experienced success, in the 1970s, as vocalists singing popular romantic songs with orchestrations not unlike modern interpretations of compositions for Sinatra, Martin, Como and Andy Williams of the 50s and 60s. Thus, Western music was relegated to the trash heap of modern radio played music.
It as about 1980 when all that changed...in a big way! Radio stations no longer played "Western" music like Marty Robbins great western hits like "Saddle Tramp," "Tumblin' Tumble Weeds" or "El Paso." Radio stations stopped calling themselves "Country and Western" but simply "Country music stations." However, this movement which reportedly began in Nashville, disenfranchised Texas artists like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and more and together they began what became known as the "Outlaw Country" music movement. They refused to be what the Nashville publishers wanted of them and went on to play music they enjoyed and that praised Texas and the south west. They also praised their predecessors of the 40s and 50s including Ernest Tubb and Bob Wills who were famous for "Western Swing" which was dance music so popular in all over Texas and nearby states.
At the start of the 1980s, those artists who had previously put away their hats, put them back on and went on to have great success in Country music and with more than a few Western music songs including Dan Seals who, with his hat on, recorded hits like "Meet me in Montana" with the beautiful and talented Marie Osmond and "Everything that Glitters in Not Gold" and the retro sounding dance song, "Bop!" Paul Davis recorded an album of western hits and Michael Martin Murphey who had recorded a beautifully orchestrated song entitled "Wildfire!" which had been a popular music hit in the late 1970s leveraged that success to build a truly great western music singing and touring career with several western music hits including, "Tie Knots in the Devil's Tail," "Red River Valley" and the fun song "Cowboy Logic."
It is my opinion that the unknown singer from south Texas named George Strait, who refused to "....loose the hat" and who had his first country music hit in 1981, served as the catalyst for these older artists to express more fully themselves and opened doors for a whole new set of artists including Garth Brooks, Mark Chesnutt, Clint Black, Toby Keith and Alan Jackson, all of them wearing hats! All of these artists went on to have many great country music hits and many of them included in their albums at least one classic western music hit including George Strait who, early in his career, recorded "Amarillo by Morning" which was another western swing song popular in the dance halls.
Singing in Spanish went away in 1980 with Western music where it had been previously appreciated. Without a radio venue, Tejano artists sought, like Willie and Waylon, to publish their own music and charter their own radio stations with "Tejano" music. Many singing artists from Texas have had great success in Country and Western music but only a few had success singing in Spanish which includes Marty Robbins, Freddy Fender, Johnny Rodriguez, Emilio Navaira and George Strait who sang the classic Mexican romantic song, "El Rey" with beautifully articulated Spanish.
Thus, Mr. Strait, who now resides outside San Antonio, did much more than have more number one hits than any other American recording artist, more than 60, he helped to preserve Western music and Western Muisc sung in Spanish as well.
I encourage you to continue this journey into country AND western music and also enjoy some "Cajun" music from our good neighbors in Louisiana and "Tejano" music from my relatives in south Texas, neighbors with Mr. Strait. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Mr. Strait was the most influential, best known, most successful country music artist of the 20th century and beyond.

The man is the Michael Jackson of Country Music. He’s a true cowboys. A Rancher and an avid team roper. I used to watch him rope and have run a few roping chutes with him in a little town in Texas years ago.

This was when he was named the Country Music Artist of the Decade. All of those people on stage are musicians who performed one of his songs at the Ceremony. I cannot remember them all but a couple of notables that you didn't mention are Brooks and Dunn and Garth Brooks. Garth Brooks was the one in the black cowboy hat just smiling but not singing. The reason he wasn't singing is he couldn't, he was geeking out because he is a HUGE George Strait fan and has said that Strait is the reason he himself became a Country music singer. Strait gave several of the artists that were up there their start, I know for a fact both Martina Mcbride and Miranda Lambert toured with him as his opening act at the beginning of their careers.
Also, a Troubadour is a traveling lyrical poet (singer) and Strait was basically Looking back on his life up to that point. "I was a young Troubadour, when I rode in on a song. I'll be an old Troubadour, when I'm gone."

Greorge Straight it the country King ..,, has had a great music career. Then semi retired. Has a huge working ranch in Texas. Competed in rodeos sponsored rodeos, but he stills holds on to his true country roots. Him and Alan Jackson have held on to their country values.

He is called King George for a reason. This was a show that honored George Strait. The Nashville Machine pushed the greats like George Strait and Alan Jackson out of the way for modern pop songs. FYI Blake was married to Miranda Lambert before Gwen.
You will love Miranda! Gun Power and Lead, Kerosene.

He had a habit of taking singers no one knew on tour with him to open. I believe Taylor Swift open for him at one point before she hit the rocket ship to mega star.
This was a tribute to George that was broadcasted on CBS. Jamie Fox acutely preform You Look So Good In Love. Pretty good cover.
