    I was eating lunch and having a soda, watching your video, I thought it was very interesting... So, even though I was way too full, and sitting at my desk, I tried the relaxation, tidal breathing, and visualization... I was amazed, almost 2 minutes until those first contractions! I'm hoping I can figure this out. I'd love to be able to spend a few minutes underwater snorkeling!

    I’ve been practicing yoga/meditation much longer than I have been freediving, so when I started my freediving training I naturally let my mind “be free” and wonder, and let it fade into the water. At least, I try! I never remember to try the visualization technique while breath holding but I will next time, maybe it will work better for me. My best static is 3 min so far

    As some one who does marching band being able to exercise your lungs is very important because 90% of the stuff we do has to do with air. We have to learn that when marching to be able to take big amounts of air in very fast breaths and be able to hold a steady continues breath for long periods of time. So when doing what we call breathing exercises we do a breathing square such as breath 5 sec hold 5 sec exhale 5 sec hold 5 sec and repeat slowly shorting the amount of time to take a breath and longer amounts of the rest. We also blow up balloons to physically see how consistent our exhale is and how long we can do it. I really liked watching some of your videos and I plan on telling my band director about some of your techniques that we could add.😁

    These videos are really great, the best on the internet. I have some questions. When I watched this I was very surprised that this video didn't start with the 2 minute video content. For 3 minutes, I would have throught that you do the same process as for 2 minutes, and then add something to that process. Why is the 3 min hold not done with the same process? Back to 2 min... When I did the 2 minute hold it worked the very first time. I watched your 2 min video, and as I was watching I did the warm up of breathing in for 3 seconds and out for 6 seconds, breathing into the belly and then the chest, and then in for 5 seconds before the breath hold. After about 3 min of warm up, I held my breath quite comfortably for 2:01. :) Then I went in the sea to go spearfishing, and while I was swimming looking for fish, I continued with this 3 seconds in, 6 minutes out process. Before I dove down the first time, I breathed in for 5 seconds, and then I held my breath underwater for 1:15 :). OK, now my questions... 1. Can I use these same techniques for spearfishing? 2. If yes, if I'm holding my breath underwater for up to 2:00, should I use your 2:00 video technique, as I did today? 3. And if I want to hold my breath for more than 2 minutes underwater, what technique should I use? 4. And in your 2 min video, you said that there is no danger of blacking out in 2 min or less. At what time does a blackout become possible? I'm often spearfishing alone and need to make sure that I don't blackout. ;) 5. And if I need to use different techniques for spearfishing, please advise. 🙏

    • @gertleroy
      @gertleroy  2 місяці тому +1

      in my premium membership see link in bio we answer all these questions.
      short answer : for diving ALWAYS use tidal breathing, unless you wanna black out and die.
      the 3 Secs in 6 secs out is a light form of hyperventilation, you should not use it in the water. it's fine for beginners to learn breathholding on dry land, but it's still hyperventilation.

    • @gertleroy
      @gertleroy  5 місяців тому +1

      just do tidal breathing.
      ps. there is an immense problem with the way you describe " exhaling deeply 80-100%" because the way you would actually do it would look very different than your description of it. That's one of the reasons why you shouldn't do it. please look up FRC and RV and understand that "empty" is never empty and thus any percentage like 80% or 100% is never a representation of the reality.

      Hi Benni. Good question. There is no 1 way. There are many ways. I give you tools to try out. The way we breathe before holding the breath or diving is called the breathe up. There are many ways to breathe up. The 3 secs in 6 secs out is a way to make a beginner pay attention to the breath. It's not mandatory. You can do without. All depends on what you like best. The more experienced a person is, the more they will breathe lightly, like tidal breathing. But there's other ways as well. Cheers 🙏

      swallowing can be an attempt of your body to breathe. So when it manifests it's usually when the urge to breath pops up. When do you start swallowing and is this only during static or also when diving?

    Nice as always :) as im learning about holding the breath and everything about freediving, i found myself in the first phase "relaxation" but in contraction phase too not think about anything, just peaceful void. When i try something to visualize i feel like I'm losing it like i lose energy and concentration, so i live it and stay in that state of "nothingness"...Considering contraction i don't feel them in my diaphragm just a little bit, but i feel them strong in my throat, is that normal or i do something wrong?!

    • @gertleroy
      @gertleroy  4 роки тому +1

      thanks Deemonk! yes, we all have our own different ways of getting "in the zone". Good you observed that some techniques take too much energy, so better switch to something else, like freely let your mind wonder, or simply peaceful void like you mentionned. Feeling contractions in your throat is normal. We are all different. I should be next to you to see what really happens, but it might be (or not) that subconsciously you are holding tension in your abdomen, and thus blocking the contractions, which makes you feel them moe in the throat. It's a possibility. So be mindful about that. Stretch your diagragm (see my stretching videos) so it is flexible and can easily move. Don't be tight in the abdominal area. Contractions always go to the throat (maybe you can see that in this video as well) but they are more visible in the abdominal area. But once again, we are all different. Work on relaxation and pay especially attention to that area. Let us know later if anything changed! cheers :-)

    After I watched your 2 minute breathhold video, i managed around 2m and 15 seconds!
    Question: How long do you recommend to wait between each warm-up breathhold? Can you go directly from the 1st to the 2nd?
    Also, I almost exclusively dive in (relatively) shallow, murky freshwater areas close to me. I don't have a diving buddy so I make sure to not take any chances. However, normally I have friends at least swimming a bit closer to the shore :) anything in particular I should keep in mind while doing these types of dives? Going further than 4m deep is currently a bit scary, and I need to practice equalization.

    • @gertleroy
      @gertleroy  3 роки тому +2

      congratz! usually a 2minute "breathe-up" or rest in between breathholds is enough. if you feel you need more no worries, but don't go over 5 minutes rest.
      Never dive alone, even it's 4 m deep. You can perfectly get in trouble in 4m deep water. especially when it's murky! you might wanna practise in a pool with perfect visibility so your friends or live guards can see you! best tip: RELAX! :-)
