      @@mason4354 According to Urban Dictionary, privilege is the belief that members of particular groups, sexualities, genders, sexes, races, etc. are afforded advantages in society for being a member of said group.
      The term was popularized by the regressive left and is generally used as an easy button to shut down discussions/arguments and blame others for one's own shortcomings. Achievements earned by others through hard work are dismissed as just further evidence of their privilege.
      By accepting this philosophy, believers in this religion create a world where all their failures are the fault of someone else, and all the successes of others are because they possessed some inherit unfair advantage.
      Bill: I can't get a decent job, I'm fat because of poor genetics, and I'm poor because of institutionalized racism. I wish I had your privilege John.
      John: So your decision to screw off in school, constantly eat junk food, knock up your ex who you now have to pay child support to has nothing to do with your current situation?
      Bill: John you seriously need to check your privilege.
      The regressive left is a term coined by anti-extremist activist Maajid Nawaz, to describe far left zealots who defend and support extremist ideologies, cultural and religious relativity and pander to absurd sensitivities. You'll often find these SJW type plonkers screaming racist or bigot at anybody who dares challenge their one size fits all view of the world.

    As a lifelong mountaineer this story is bizarre:
    -The amount of money involved was enormous.
    -Neither woman was what would be considered a "serious" mountaineer. They were mountain tourists.
    -The amount of discomfort, pain, and fatigue they endured to reach the summits of these peaks, all for instagram fame, was enormous, and baffling.
    As for summit races, they go back to the beginning of alpinism: Edward Whymper was involved in a very similar race to the summit of the Matterhorn in 1864. He beat the group from the Italian side by mere hours. Part of his group perished on the descent.

      Yes, mountaineering (like all world sports) has turned into some kind of circus or reality show! In order for one fool from Instagram to set another ridiculous record, dozens of people work and risk their lives - real professionals pave their way in the snow, hang ropes, make crevasse crossings and much more, Sherpas lift hundreds of kilograms of equipment and equipment, set camps and cook food (it's amazing that no one has yet dragged a chef from a restaurant to Everest with Michelin stars), helicopter pilots throw them as high as possible, and then the whole crowd saves these idiots risking their lives, because the fools got into trouble playing climbers!!!

    The point of climbing for me was to challenge yourself against the geology and weather..to take your chances expose yourself to risk ..and roll the dice of fate ..but still using good judgement, experience, carefully selected equipment , skills and physical fitness to reduce the chance of lethality or serious injury..
    Meeting a few fellow adventurers and odd balls on the rocks was always part of the fun..but the advent of Facebook and the other social media platforms quickly turned a quasi religious journey of adventurous endurance and self discovery into an egotistical....look at me .. lycra leggings clown show...I visit ancient monuments and walk old Roman Roads and medieval paths now... i encounter more cows and considerably more mud and less rock....but virtually no annoying spuzzoids filming themselves..which makes the day much more worthwhile..

    Yep, chasing an almost meaningless title, at great monetary expense.
    Let’s not forget that the Sherpas were in this solely for money, and they could have declined to continue due to safety concerns. *They* were the experts.
    On a related note, I find it hard to believe that people do silly things in order to get their name into some “record book.”

Now days they track increasingly contrived nonsense like "Most Rotations Hanging from a Power Drill in One Minute" but at least they refuse to approve record attempts beyond a reasonable level of risk.

    Of course it’s the Sherpas and other guides who pay when people get summit fever.
    I’ve been hearing this story since it actually happened.
    Gina at least seemed to love mountaineering and then got swept up in the glory and ego of the title when she met Anna. The sad thing is her experience should have informed her of the danger and she ignored it in pursuit of summit and title fever.
    Anna seemed to only really be into mountaineering for the title and instagram and clearly had a lot of stamina, but it was reckless to even begin the final climb if she needed oxygen at that elevation regardless of the weather. She didn’t have Gina’s experience and wouldn’t have understood the risks as well.
    I don’t feel much sympathy for either woman. If only Gina had turned back after that first avalanche it would have saved two lives and not injured the other guide.
    If Anna hadn’t decided to stomp out so many mountains in as short a time a possible with so little training under her belt there likewise wouldn’t have been the senseless competition.
    Reminds me of the woman who was determined to claim/invent the title of ‘first Asian woman with a pacemaker’ to climb Mount Everest. She couldn’t even get past camp one because she wasn’t even fit, let alone having any mountain climbing experience, but she refused to leave Everest and died in pursuit of a meaningless title.

    • @evelynwaugh4053
      @evelynwaugh4053 Місяць тому +4

      You don't even need experience to comprehend the dangers. Just reading Krakauer's Into Thin Air or any similar nonfiction would give you a healthy respect for extreme environments.

    • @RightsForZombies
      @RightsForZombies Місяць тому +2

      @@evelynwaugh4053 Yeah, I agree, I’ve read it and I’ve been interested in mountaineering for years.
      My point is that many novices don’t fully appreciate the dangers until they’ve been on the mountains have seen people get hurt and die around them, or had close calls themselves. They know it’s dangerous on an intellectual level but the danger doesn’t seem real to them. They get summit fever and that combined with inexperience makes them not properly respect the mountains.
      It’s especially easy these days to underestimate the 8000ers because Mount Everest is so frequently summited by novices and it gives the false impression to people that if Everest is relatively ‘safe’, being the highest 8000m peak, the others will be less challenging.
      They don’t necessarily realise the lower peaks are often more technical, or far more unstable. K2, for instance, unlike Everest, has no places that are relatively safe from avalanche flows (not to mention the Bottleneck and the massive trek to get to base camp).

    Anna did use oxygen in the camp one, but Dr. Grande did not mention that after camp two she was breaking trail in thigh deep snow, rotating with the Sherpas, for themselves and other climbers to climb. This really did't need to be curated into a musty ol' stereotype about stupid Instagram women being carried around the mountains by the helpless sherpas, the story is so much stronger than that. Here we have Gina, who had climbed since 2008, she was in every way old school and dreamed about a book deal. Along comes Anna, a very strong climber with only a few years experience, a cameraman following her and a new, totally different climbing philosophy. There is probably no mystery whatsoever to how they financed the climbing, but the true mystery is how on earth did the stars align so that both of these women were on the exact same mountain, at the exact same time to summit their last peaks. This is a summit fever and a duel for the books, and I believe that "the books" is exactly the reason why these women did not want to climb together - Gina's book dream and Anna's documentary. Lack of oxygen did not help making right desicions and the fact that some of the best and most influential sherpa's were on the mountain with them, probably providind a false sense of security.

There is no point in climbing a mountain, its not so you can eat, or save someone, its pure ego. I wonder what Gina's face, buried and frozen in the snow, looks like right now. Wonder if you could show her that picture before she tried climbing, and if she would have thought differently. She's up there right now, frozen, and dead. I am sure she would rather be back in NY enjoying a nice summer day, instead of a lost and sad frozen corpse, on some mountain people have never heard of.
