    Chorus:
I can feel the love I want
I can feel the love I need
But it's never gonna come the way I am
Could I change it if I wanted?
Can I rise above the flood?
Will it wash out in the water
Or is it always in the blood?

When I was about 11 or so, we were playing softball at a family picnic. Almost none of my family is athletic. I was pitching to my mom, who begged me to take it easy on her. She hit a line drive straight into my sternum and knocked my breath away. This song did the same thing the first time I heard it, and every single time since.

Montana really didn't have as much of an impact on this style as you may think. Born and Raised was actually written in SOHO in Manhattan at his apartment so it was just the direct he was heading. Now I'm sure Montana helps keep this alive with its serene beauty, but if you write an album like Born and Raised in the bustling Island of Manhattan, nothing will take that vibe from you! haha

How much of my mother has my mother left in me?
How much of my love will be insane to some degree?
And what about this feeling that I'm never good enough?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
How much of my father am I destined to become?
Will I dim the lights inside me just to satisfy someone?
Will I let this woman kill me, or do away with jealous love?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
I can feel love the I want, I can feel the love I need
But it's never gonna come the way I am
Could I change it if I wanted, can I rise above the flood?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
How much like my brothers, do my brothers wanna be?
Does a broken home become another broken family?
Or will we be there for each other, like nobody ever could?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
I can feel love the I want, I can feel the love I need
But it's never gonna come the way I am
Could I change it if I wanted, could I rise above the flood?

Ayush katheria & that is why he's terribly misunderstood when he speaks as apposed to sings. Music conveys a "dialect" that can only thrive on a higher frequency of consciousness. It's emotion can never be misunderstood as it is intrinsically the heart of man & not his (biased) thoughts. He's truly a vessel for this art. Too few humans now exist at such a low frequency that his music goes over their heads.

Sadly there are stacks of great musicians who also write poetry but unlike the 70s and 80s when you had geniuses all over the place, many today will never cut through coz there are too many short-sighted fools in the industry.

Mayer is touching a universal human nerve here. "Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?" As an excellent writer does, Mayer questions human reality and experiences through his own story. And it's appropriate for this song to drop on Good Friday. Generational sins aren't washed out with water (e.i. human effort, "Could I change it if I wanted"), but they are only washed out in the blood of the Lamb of God. As Jesus gave his last breath, he declared, "It is finished." My brokenness doesn't have to continue to run through generational blood when I am washed in Christ's blood and filled with the Holy Spirit. Happy Good Friday!

It shows through the eyes and the confident way one moves through life. It's a different beauty because it radiates from within and draws others in." -happi.com. The thing with music, And especially with songwriting, is that you write about what your going through in that time of your life, And the way you are feeling is expessing it self through the music. Thats why every album he made is so different. Expecting him to write another continuem is silly, not because he cant, But because he is simply not the same man he was 10 years ago.

My opinion is that music has strayed away from its raw lyrical content and become more about making catchy hooks and riffs. Guys like Mayer and Prine are few and far between. Spread the love. 🤙🏽
