  • The hymn "Heyr, himna smiður" was written by the Icelandic viking Kolbeinn Tumason in 1208. The music was composed in the 1970s by Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson (1938-2013), one of Iceland's foremost contemporary composers.
Heyr himna smiður | Hear, Heavenly Creator (An Icelandic Hymn)
The Royal Danish Academy of Music Voices
    Frederick Bayani Mabalot, Conductor
Sanni Määttä and Lisa Zhou, Violinists
    Adriana Isaku, Cello
    India Hooi, Choir Manager/Tonmeister
    English Translation:
Listen, smith of the heavens, what the poet asks.
May softly come unto me your mercy.
So I call on thee, for you have created me.
I am thy servant, you are my Lord.
God, I call on thee to heal me.
Remember me, mild one, Most we need thee.
Drive out, O king of suns, generous and great,
every human sorrow from the city of the heart.
Watch over me, mild one, Most we need thee,
truly every moment in the world of men.
send us, son of the virgin, good causes,
all aid is from thee, in my heart.

Icelandic language is always underrated, not only by other nations but Icelanders too. Their tongue is a living piece of history and I would hate to see it disappear. Beauty created and contained within borders set by the North Sea.

I'm an Icelander and I am so very proud of our beautiful language, heritige and of our most hardy ancestors who through the grace of God survived the worst of conditions so that I can stand here in my beautiful fatherland and proudly say "I'm Icelandic".

      It is.
On the other hand, just for a little possibly disappointing backstory - it's written by a chieftain who died after fighting with a bishop over who should be allowed to appoint bishops. So well in line with the whole investiture problem on the continent, back in the 12th or 13th century.
I'm not sure if he composed before the battle with the bishop or after; considering how repentant it is, and how the poet is asking his wounds be healed, I'm leaning towards the idea that it's after the battle (he was wounded by a rock to the head, and died a few days after).

If it helps, the guy who wrote this poem/psalm, he made the words on his deathbed, having been grievously wounded in battle.
Fighting a Bishop, of course, over who should have the rights to decide who should become a priest (aligning with the investiture problems on the continent).

I know because “Heyr Himna Smiður” was written by my 20x great uncle, Kolbeinn Tumason, in 1208.
As for the music it was composed by a distant (9th) cousin, Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, in 1973.

@@joninelkolbinson4936 Icelandic music is really astonishing I must say. I started listening to the pieces of Hildur Guðnadóttir and then I came to know about this beautiful Hymn. Also I discovered singer Ellen Kristjánsdóttir. She has a divine voice to be honest. Absolutely mesmerizing. I am not religious but I love the strange inner feeling of peace Icelandic music gives me. We indians have a rich diversity in music and musical instruments, but I am glad I discovered this beautiful country's fascinating culture and musical sense. Respect to your 20x great uncle from me :)
