I live in france, I get those beetles all the time whenever you buy an antique wood furniture, not a big deal, just treat it, leave outside a couple of days after treating it, make sure you don’t have the dust anymore and then just clean it with regular cleaner and it will be fine. They are very common. Don’t worry about it.
First of all so sorry you are sick and praying for a quick recovery. As far as the credenza saga, were you scammed? In my opinion ( for what it's worth) no. It's unfortunate but the seller more than likely had no idea. It is a chance we all take from buying second hand( but I would not stop this). Certainly if you haven't already contact the seller, let him know as he may have other items that may be infested. If he is an honest person, he should offer you a refund, but don't demand it. I wouldn't keep the piece, simply because of your kids, but don't put it on the curb take it to the dump. It is ashame because it was a good looking piece, but you don't want someone else to inherit a problem. Don't let this deter you from thrifting however. Think of it as one of those things. ~Karin
You are totally right. Scam must entail some intent to harm. So that why I mentioned I wasn’t sure if I should even call it that. Just so different than my other fbm experiences. Can’t win them all 🤷🏻♀️
I would definitely contact the seller and tell him/her what you discovered. Ask for your money back! It's worth a try. Also, if you get no satisfaction, give the seller a negative rating. People deserve to know not to do business with them in the future. Sorry this happened to you. I once sold a battery charger to someone on FB Marketplace. I thought it was in perfect working order but when he got it home he messaged me that it wouldn't hold a charge. I felt terrible and gave him a total refund. People need to do the right thing.

My Mom was in her Bible everyday for hours for years before she became ill. Her gold was long gone on the edges of the pages. She always had a ruler and high lighters and underlined in red pen. She was so active in her church. I have been trying my best to have the attitude of gratitude and in everything give thanks such as the Thessalonians wrote about. As far as your credenza, maybe go to estate sales. When you spoke of the fine dust right away I thought of baby carpenter bees. They were hideous on my Mom's back porch ceiling. I would just put it on the curb with a sign duct taped to it that's it's infested with Beatles. I believe your wardrobe is worth lots and that came with the house. I wouldn't want to bring it back inside. I worked PT when I went to college for a pest control company. Once you put on your heat the buried larva might start hatching and like you said, chemicals inside where your children's toys are. I would cut your loss on the credenza. In the big scheme of things, $125 is not too much money to lose if it means keeping your children safe. Hope you all feel better.
As an aside, as a retired Interior Designer, we occasionally had to deal with boring beetles in antique items purchased for clients. The furniture must have an borate treatment done to completely kill the infestation. It requires sanding the clear coat/finish from the entire piece, doing the treatment and then having to refinish. It is much more time and labor intensive than you think. Just an FYI.
The exterminator guy I called said he had a treatment that could be injected into those holes so that it wouldn’t have to be sanded down and everything. But my fear is that that wouldn’t work and then the next step would be the treatment that you mentioned!
@EmilyGarbe Exactly. You could be injecting into holes for only the Lord knows how long into the future. In the meantime, you run the risk of them moving into other parts of your home. I'm a cost-saving person myself. I understand the delimma of wasting $125. It is hard to just let that go. But for the safety of my family and pets, I personally wouldn't hesitate to say "hasta la vista baby" to that console. As your mom recommended, be sure to note that it is infested with boring beetles if you place on your curb.
Never ever I had to do that! I get them from all the antiques and applying “Xylophene”, you remove them and no need to refinish. The holes with stay but that adds character.
How quickly do you want to use it? If you can wait several months I would say treat it and leave it out in the shed or garage for 3 months to make sure no eggs hatched and bugs are gone. Then bring it in and clean it well and you will be fine to use it. If not, then get rid of it immediately. It's a nice piece and a shame to throw it in the dump but you don't want the bugs getting into your other furniture. Hugs xoxo

Omg it’s authentic wormwood furniture! Pottery barn and other stores intentionally distress their furniture to look like it has wormholes in it. But yeah I wouldn’t want those beetles either! I hope you can find another piece. Sometimes we can find nice pieces for a couple hundred dollars at our local habitat for humanity store. Thanks for the video!
My friend who lives 100 miles away bought a large hutch to hold her tv. It was black with lots of gold painting on it. Beautiful! She paid $$$ for it. She said every time she vacuums in front of it there all this dust. I told her it sounded like it 😢sounded like termites. She was shocked. I told her to hire someone to take it to the dump. She called an exterminator and he said he would come look. He could treat it for $1,000. 00. She had it delivered to the dump.
Ughhh...that is such a beautiful piece...I'm not one to toss something quickly...unless it can't be fixed. I would try a treatment and leave it outside as long as necessary. Maybe there's some kind of sealer that can be used after? Covid...had it 3 times...always after traveling for whatever reason. Having kids while sick can quickly throw you into one of those "downs" you spoke of. I have 5 children...now all adults and youngest is 25...but looking back...how did I do it? Now...when I have one or two of my grandbabies...I'm exhausted after a few days. I guess the older we get...we forget. I was the queen of "organized" with color coded dry erase boards...each child having their own color..whether it was for chores...appts...sports..even on their laundry baskets. I loved the challenge I guess but I had many of those ups and down. Back to school was that season for me also and being sick can add to it. The "downs" turn to the "ups" once you feel better and find your groove again and recognizing even the smallest blessing is where it's at. Looking forward to your next project...🥰 God Bless

Definitely contact the seller to let them know. They may not have been aware. I had the same problem when we built our house, I decided to gather some willow branches to use as spindles in a railing, after installing them I noticed “dust” as you did, there were about 6 branches, I put them in a plastic bag and sprayed Raid I think left them in the garage for a week, problem solved. You could spray with a more eco-friendly killer, wrap in a drop cloth, leave outside til no more dust shows up, then clean really well. It should be ok by then. But only if you truly love the credenza, good luck 😊

That's so hard because when you are in it, you can't see that these are the gold ol days, but they are. Give yourself permission to be frustrated and in the times try to take a step back. I would take a pause by doing something creative. Also just know in your heart of hearts none of us are perfect, we don't live on Pinterest, being a stay at home mom is hard, we all get overwhelmed with life. But now that I'm 59 I look back to those times and wouldn't trade it for anything. You're doing good. PS Snoop dog has an affirmation song ❤
Sorry about the scam on FB Market place, and the Covid, that sucks. I think it's so weird that some of us have never gotten it. My husband is 81 and I'm 61, neither of us has ever had it that we know of. We've tested several times when sick over the past 4 years. Hope you feel better soon!
I wonder if you spray wood beach on the piece if that would kill any pests. Or use the oven cleaner method that would surely kill any living pests on you piece. You would have to possibly re stain or poly the piece afterwards!! But that’s one option

I don’t think I would treat the furniture with any chemicals. You have the health of your kids to be concerned about, not to mention yours and your husband’s health. I believe it would be a good idea to call the seller and let him know about the problem. It is possible that he didn’t know of the problem. Also, maybe he’ll be selling more items that have the same problem, surely he’d like to prevent a similar situation. He’d most likely want to know. Who knows, he may even offer to refund some or all of what you paid for it… May our Heavenly Father continue to bless your entire family. May He comfort each of you as you suffer through Covid. Sorry you are sick. I hope you all get better soon. My daughter came back from vacation with her dad and missed the first few days of KG because she got head lice. It's kind of sad to miss first day of KG since its such a big day (shes 29 now) I would let the owner know but you probably wont get your money back. I'd trash it.
I get sick every time I move, because of the dust on items from closets. Tried to get rid of mold in a corner of the basement, no mask, got sick. Definitely wear a mask. I will, too.
So sorry that you experienced this issue with your beautiful credenza. I think that it is not worth the risk to treat it with dangerous chemicals that might affect your children. I also wouldn't leave it on the street - but take it to a dump. It is most likely the seller did not know about this issue. You could call them and mention it to them. See what they offer to do. I hope you and your family get over COVID soon. Two of my family members have it right now also. I appreciate your spiritual insights from Psalms - one of my favorite books in the Old Testament.
I would send it back. If they don't take it back, just get rid of it. I guess since you live in Florida, there are so many floods I would be wary of wood or material items.

It is going around again , but my husband and I did not ever get it. I would probably get rid of that beautiful piece. There are probably more than the places you see. My friend had a huge infestation from an old cabinet she brought in so I ,put thrifted clothes in the dryer as soon as I get home, then wash them. I leave furniture outside til I clean it well. I don’t bring in paper boxes …especially if it was in an old building . Cashion is the most precious sweet cute baby. I would not get anything done. I would want to cuddle all day. Better 2 b safe than sorry, just incase they could spread 2 any of Ur other furniture pieces? 🤷♀️ I'm thinking that the Joy is gone! 🤔😉 When in doubt, throw it out!! Having said that I'd let the seller know and at least try 2 retrieve Ur money back. I'm sure another replacement piece will come along! 💞😊
I’m struggling with a similar issue and it’s been over a month. I’ve tried everything natural and I even went to Home Depot to get a can of termites spray. I feel like I’m going to ditch my cabinet because it’s not worth it. Mine was almost $600 and I love it but it’s on a covered porch outside right now. I’ll try the vinegar again and borax and if that doesn’t work I’m definitely done
August is a very hard month for Mothers because the major adjustment of school and school actitives!!!! It's best to prepare at least two weeks before school start to establish sleep and time schedules. I would throw away the so called "furniture". You are the "environmental" protector of your home and family health. I would rather "lose" $125 instead of contaminating my home with dangerous investation. God Bless!!!!
I would hope you contact the seller. The seller may be completely unaware. If he won’t make it right there is a way to treat the furniture but it is not a quick fix and it will take time.
This happened to me in my brand new kitchen cabinets during a kitchen gut. The contractor offered to replace the front of the cabinet right under the bull nose tile...which he would have to take out the tile, OR he would pay to tent/fumigate the whole house which I chose as I was worried the powderpost beetles could have gone elsewhere in the home. Not fun!!! I heard they can put furniture in something like a shipping container and fumigate. BTW the contractor told me it comes with the territory...meaning wood and bugs I guess.
I would contact the seller and advise what is going on with the credenza. Assuming positive intent …perhaps the seller was unaware and may have the same situation with other wood pieces in their home if it was as a result of water damage. You may be doing them a service by letting them know. See if they offer anything. Then decide if an appropriate review could help other unaware buyers for this seller. I love the piece but for the health and safety of your kiddos….get rid of it! Emily, you know you won’t ever feel completely comfortable with this piece in your home again. I had a similar experience. I bought a dresser on Facebook and at first I noticed a vinegar smell to it. Didnt think much. then after putting all my daughters clothes in it the next day noticed termite dust. I reached out to the seller and she denied it had anything and wouldn't take the piece back. Mind you we drove a long way to get it too. when I looked up how to get rid of termites it said to use vinegar, so it made sense why it smelled like it. so I just got rid of it for a piece of mind because I read that they can go to other pieces of furniture. it was a pottery barn 400 dresser. I lost so much money. now Im hesitant to buy on Facebook. i also feel like I shouldn't have paid that much in the first place but wasn't my brightest moment lol.
My husband has a fear of anything second hand. He would saw it up and throw it in a bin. He would rather buy something cheap and new rather than something nice and used. I am starting to think it's a good thing. Basically all our furniture is from IKEA.
As much as I hate to say it, this may have just been an expensive mistake, or “learning experience”. Chances are, the seller didn’t know the piece was damaged. Maybe they did, but I don’t know that you would have any way of finding out. I’m so sorry it happened. But I think I would trash it, and be thankful it wasn’t more expensive. I m always afraid there might be black widow eggs hitching a ride on something I bought, you never know where they kept the item, garage, old barn etc.

I'd be done with it. It was a pretty piece but I wouldn't take a chance on trying to treat it and still not get rid of the pest. I'd also be afraid they would get in something else. Perhaps you should notify the seller as others suggested also. I feel like God will provide you with the perfect piece if he hasn't already. Rest as much as you can and get well.

My husband & his tech were sick last week & now my 3yr old granddaughter got up yesterday morning sneezing non stop, she's been thru almost an entire box of Kleenex🫤 My DIL is a RN in the NICU in one of the Tampa hospitals, she said the hospital is full of covid right now🫤 I'm knot feeling my best this morning, I'm feeling exhausted, body aches & sore throat. I'm thinking all of ours is just head colds 🤞🏼 I 100% agree with your mom.. put that piece out on the curb with a sign so no one will pick it up! Is not worth risking getting those chemicals on the kids toys, or even worse those bud getting anywhere else in your home! If the piece was stored in a garage that may where the water damage came from. The Seller may or may not have known about the bugs.🤷♀️ But I'm sure they had to know about the water damage! Yes he should have at least told you that! It might be worth contacting them & explaining. If they're good honest people & really didn't realize it, maybe they'll offer your money back or at least part of it. Personally, I'd call & explain.. worse case scenario they'll just say "sorry, didn't realize it"🤷♀️ But hopefully they'll be gracious about it & hopefully you'll find something even better! Then my DIL got sick, she works at the hospital so she took a test & tested positive, pretty sure that's what my husband had too. My MIL called yesterday, both she & her sister that's been living with her tested positive.. which is where my husband stayed when he went up for his brothers funeral. We're pretty sure he gave it to them🤦♀️ Now i woke up with a sore throat, stuffy nose & feeling feverish this morning! I just rebuke it all!🙌🏻 i don't have time for it😄 I hate you had to go thru all that with the furniture piece, i know that had to be frustrating🫤 I hope everything works out & you end up with the perfect piece!

Get rid of it....and pray the beetles haven't migrated to your other wood furniture pieces. If you didn't have children, I would say give it a try. But the safety of your family is No. 1.

My friend who lives 100 miles away bought a large hutch to hold her tv. It was black with lots of gold painting on it. Beautiful! She paid $$$ for it. She said every time she vacuums in front of it there all this dust. I told her it sounded like it 😢sounded like termites. She was shocked. I told her to hire someone to take it to the dump. She called an exterminator and he said he would come look. He could treat it for $1,000. 00. She had it delivered to the dump.

Ughhh...that is such a beautiful piece...I'm not one to toss something quickly...unless it can't be fixed. I would try a treatment and leave it outside as long as necessary. Maybe there's some kind of sealer that can be used after? Covid...had it 3 times...always after traveling for whatever reason. Having kids while sick can quickly throw you into one of those "downs" you spoke of. I have 5 children...now all adults and youngest is 25...but looking back...how did I do it? Now...when I have one or two of my grandbabies...I'm exhausted after a few days. I guess the older we get...we forget. I was the queen of "organized" with color coded dry erase boards...each child having their own color..whether it was for chores...appts...sports..even on their laundry baskets. I loved the challenge I guess but I had many of those ups and down. Back to school was that season for me also and being sick can add to it. The "downs" turn to the "ups" once you feel better and find your groove again and recognizing even the smallest blessing is where it's at. Looking forward to your next project...🥰 God Bless

Definitely contact the seller to let them know. They may not have been aware. I had the same problem when we built our house, I decided to gather some willow branches to use as spindles in a railing, after installing them I noticed “dust” as you did, there were about 6 branches, I put them in a plastic bag and sprayed Raid I think left them in the garage for a week, problem solved. You could spray with a more eco-friendly killer, wrap in a drop cloth, leave outside til no more dust shows up, then clean really well. It should be ok by then. But only if you truly love the credenza, good luck 😊

That's so hard because when you are in it, you can't see that these are the gold ol days, but they are. Give yourself permission to be frustrated and in the times try to take a step back. I would take a pause by doing something creative. Also just know in your heart of hearts none of us are perfect, we don't live on Pinterest, being a stay at home mom is hard, we all get overwhelmed with life. But now that I'm 59 I look back to those times and wouldn't trade it for anything. You're doing good. PS Snoop dog has an affirmation song ❤

I wonder if you spray wood beach on the piece if that would kill any pests. Or use the oven cleaner method that would surely kill any living pests on you piece. You would have to possibly re stain or poly the piece afterwards!! But that’s one option

I don’t think I would treat the furniture with any chemicals. You have the health of your kids to be concerned about, not to mention yours and your husband’s health. I believe it would be a good idea to call the seller and let him know about the problem. It is possible that he didn’t know of the problem. Also, maybe he’ll be selling more items that have the same problem, surely he’d like to prevent a similar situation. He’d most likely want to know. Who knows, he may even offer to refund some or all of what you paid for it…

I get sick every time I move, because of the dust on items from closets. Tried to get rid of mold in a corner of the basement, no mask, got sick. Definitely wear a mask. I will, too.

It is going around again , but my husband and I did not ever get it. I would probably get rid of that beautiful piece. There are probably more than the places you see. My friend had a huge infestation from an old cabinet she brought in so I ,put thrifted clothes in the dryer as soon as I get home, then wash them. I leave furniture outside til I clean it well. I don’t bring in paper boxes …especially if it was in an old building . Cashion is the most precious sweet cute baby. I would not get anything done. I would want to cuddle all day. I’m struggling with a similar issue and it’s been over a month. I’ve tried everything natural and I even went to Home Depot to get a can of termites spray. I feel like I’m going to ditch my cabinet because it’s not worth it. Mine was almost $600 and I love it but it’s on a covered porch outside right now. I’ll try the vinegar again and borax and if that doesn’t work I’m definitely done

August is a very hard month for Mothers because the major adjustment of school and school actitives!!!! It's best to prepare at least two weeks before school start to establish sleep and time schedules. I would throw away the so called "furniture". You are the "environmental" protector of your home and family health. I would rather "lose" $125 instead of contaminating my home with dangerous investation. God Bless!!!!

This happened to me in my brand new kitchen cabinets during a kitchen gut. The contractor offered to replace the front of the cabinet right under the bull nose tile...which he would have to take out the tile, OR he would pay to tent/fumigate the whole house which I chose as I was worried the powderpost beetles could have gone elsewhere in the home. Not fun!!! I heard they can put furniture in something like a shipping container and fumigate. BTW the contractor told me it comes with the territory...meaning wood and bugs I guess.

I would contact the seller and advise what is going on with the credenza. Assuming positive intent …perhaps the seller was unaware and may have the same situation with other wood pieces in their home if it was as a result of water damage. You may be doing them a service by letting them know. See if they offer anything. Then decide if an appropriate review could help other unaware buyers for this seller. I love the piece but for the health and safety of your kiddos….get rid of it! Emily, you know you won’t ever feel completely comfortable with this piece in your home again. I had a similar experience. I bought a dresser on Facebook and at first I noticed a vinegar smell to it. Didnt think much. then after putting all my daughters clothes in it the next day noticed termite dust. I reached out to the seller and she denied it had anything and wouldn't take the piece back. Mind you we drove a long way to get it too. when I looked up how to get rid of termites it said to use vinegar, so it made sense why it smelled like it. so I just got rid of it for a piece of mind because I read that they can go to other pieces of furniture. it was a pottery barn 400 dresser. I lost so much money. now Im hesitant to buy on Facebook. i also feel like I shouldn't have paid that much in the first place but wasn't my brightest moment lol.

My husband has a fear of anything second hand. He would saw it up and throw it in a bin. He would rather buy something cheap and new rather than something nice and used. I am starting to think it's a good thing. Basically all our furniture is from IKEA.

As much as I hate to say it, this may have just been an expensive mistake, or “learning experience”. Chances are, the seller didn’t know the piece was damaged. Maybe they did, but I don’t know that you would have any way of finding out. I’m so sorry it happened. But I think I would trash it, and be thankful it wasn’t more expensive. I'd be done with it. It was a pretty piece but I wouldn't take a chance on trying to treat it and still not get rid of the pest. I'd also be afraid they would get in something else. Perhaps you should notify the seller as others suggested also. I feel like God will provide you with the perfect piece if he hasn't already. Rest as much as you can and get well.

My husband & his tech were sick last week & now my 3yr old granddaughter got up yesterday morning sneezing non stop, she's been thru almost an entire box of Kleenex🫤 My DIL is a RN in the NICU in one of the Tampa hospitals, she said the hospital is full of covid right now🫤 I'm knot feeling my best this morning, I'm feeling exhausted, body aches & sore throat. I'm thinking all of ours is just head colds 🤞🏼 I 100% agree with your mom.. put that piece out on the curb with a sign so no one will pick it up! Is not worth risking getting those chemicals on the kids toys, or even worse those bud getting anywhere else in your home! If the piece was stored in a garage that may where the water damage came from. The Seller may or may not have known about the bugs.🤷♀️ But I'm sure they had to know about the water damage! Yes he should have at least told you that! It might be worth contacting them & explaining. If they're good honest people & really didn't realize it, maybe they'll offer your money back or at least part of it. Personally, I'd call & explain.. worse case scenario they'll just say "sorry, didn't realize it"🤷♀️ But hopefully they'll be gracious about it & hopefully you'll find something even better! Then my DIL got sick, she works at the hospital so she took a test & tested positive, pretty sure that's what my husband had too. My MIL called yesterday, both she & her sister that's been living with her tested positive.. which is where my husband stayed when he went up for his brothers funeral. We're pretty sure he gave it to them🤦♀️ Now i woke up with a sore throat, stuffy nose & feeling feverish this morning! I just rebuke it all!🙌🏻 i don't have time for it😄 I hate you had to go thru all that with the furniture piece, i know that had to be frustrating🫤 I hope everything works out & you end up with the perfect piece!
