Iroh’s voice actor, Mako Iwamatsu, passed away from cancer in between Books 2 and 3 of the show. He wrote “Leaves from the Vine” which is why it’s featured and the tale is dedicated to him. His understudy to this day refuses to sing Leaves from the Vine because in his words, “That’s Mako’s song!”
Don't know if it's already mentioned but when Iroh starts crying during 'Leaves from the Vine', that's Mako the va crying. He was dying from cancer and I believe it was the last recording he made before passing, and he knew it.
The haiku contest Sokka has with Madame Macmu-Ling is an Avatar World equivalent of a modern-day poetry slam or rap battle. "The Tale of Toph and Katara" is the only tale in the episode that focuses on two characters. Madame Macmu-Ling, the instructor of the Five-Seven-Five Society in "The Tale of Sokka", is named after Lauren MacMullan, part of the series' production team, and writer of that segment.
It's not entirely filler, because there is some character background, development, and that final part could be consider story progression in looking for Appa.
The picture of his son is a picture of the real mako. And they named a character in the sequel the legend of korra after him what is not good as the legend of aang but also great.
To clarify,as many said Mako Iwamatsu was the voice actor for General Iroh(up to book two) the song "leaves from the vine" is the last thing Mako ever recorded, it is said that his voice trembling at the end is really becasue Mako was overwhelmed by emotion, he knew he was dying from esophageal cancer at the time, whether it was because of his imminent death, end of his career etc none can say. Also the Voice actor picked up on the role of general Iroh(and as Aku from samurai Jack, another Iconic Mako voiced character)is Greg Balwin, in any cons he takes palce he is always fulfiling requests by saying voice lines from his roles(it happens frequently) but he always refuses the request to sing "leaves from the vine" as a sign of respect to Mako.
6:06 FUN Fact the portrait that Iroh just put on the tree is that of the voice actor Mako Iwamtasu when he was very young, he's also the voice actor of Iroh and he sadly died before the episode was aired so they dedicated this moment to him.
"I've always wondered if animals miss other animals." We had two sister cats. After one of them died, and her sister never found out, she spent months every single day walking around the house and yowling at corners, which she would only take after carefully peeking around too see if her sister was there. It was clear longing and heartbreak, because all she did after that was mope, and you could honestly tell it completely changed the cat and it was a lack of closure that really got her. If you mean other types of animals, they're obviously friends across species, it doesn't matter to them. You can see animals feel all the same things people feel, even if it's not as complex.
This is the only episode in Avatar: The Last Airbender in which Sokka is seen with his own facial hair. This is the first time Aang is seen shaving his head. He shaves it again in big episode
The feels of Ba Sing Se is to strong in this one each time, and thankful to Iroh helping Zuko try to enjoy being a normal teenager enjoy his youth. But also rip to Mako (Voice of Iroh & many others.)
A little fact about the pic of Irohs son, that is actually Mako (irohs VA) when he was young and in the military. Also, the VA that took Mako’s place refused to sing “leaves from the vine”, saying it wasn’t his song, but Mako’s
Katara and Toph bonding and having fun was very heartwarming. Them taking down the mean girls was also so satisfying! Sucks to be Zuko...It looks like he doesn't want to get too attached or settled down in Ba Sing Se, much less get involved with someone who may find out his identity someday. It makes sense but it's sad. I love Iroh's tale! It makes one wonder if the reason he's always so kind and helpful to others is because he wasn't able to help his own son... "Leaves from the vine" also killed me. At first it was such a happy song Iroh used to cheer up a crying boy, and then it turned into a tragic sad song dedicated to his late son on his birthday. The mood just 180 real quick. Then of course, that "In honor of Mako" bit really hurt my heart. Rest in peace, Mako. Thank you for bringing Uncle Iroh to life and bestowing many inspiring and wise life lessons to us. And if you were wondering what the writing on the picture said, it roughly translated to: "To General Iroh: See you after we win the War. Your loyal son, Lu Ten"
Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home R.I.P. Mako
Mako is the original voice actor of Iroh. that song brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it. Iroh is truly my favorite character in the show because there is just so many great things about him. I do believe that one of the main characters in the legend of korra was named after mako.
Did you made that all up or are you repeating false facts that someone else made up? That song was not the last lines he read for the show. He did not know he would die "soon". Greg Baldwin is not his brother AT ALL, not part of his family whatsoever. Mako was of japanese origin while Baldwin is american. Use your brain, they had to find another VOICE ACTOR to replace him, not his god damn made up brother. Please have some decency and stop making up false facts about a dead man to get upvotes on youtube
Two things: 1) This is my favourite episode of the whole show because of the emotions for each of the characters as well as it giving them time to breathe amid all the action and lets them go about their day and we see how they could live a normal life. 2) THE NEXT EPISODE IS SO GOOD BUT ALSO THE WORST FOR YOUR HEART
This EP has a lot of development for everyone. In tales of Toph and Katara, Toph got happy when Katara told her she was beautiful Because she could feel her heart beat and knew she was beIng honest, Toph crying when those bully girls told her she was a "Clown" made her cry showing she's very vulnerable and tries to hide it. This was the first real time Katara was nice to Toph. Tale of Iroh 😥 Iroh misses his son so he helps out a toddler, almost pre teens and an adult making it feel like he's raising his son all over again and the ending 😥😥😥, RIP Mako. Tale of Aang Like Iroh said "the best way to help yourself is by helping others" Aang helped that zoo guy because he misses Appa and helping those animals is like Caring for Appa, it's almost like tale of Iroh but very light-hearted. Tale of Sokka LMAO, Sokka learns that he can't always pull the girls in a harsh way Tale of Zuko Zuko gets awkward AF when he actually goes out with a normal person and he learns to loosen up a bit and that ending was cute Tale of Momo Momo's missing Appa and went on his own journey, he gets his own antagonists who later redeems themselves and he later gets proof Appa Actually is in ba sing se and also that ending 😥😥😥
30 MINUTES AGO HELL YEAH "For Mako" still hits hard. And I only learned the story behind it this year 10:15 okay Jojo Siwa I'm not ready for the next episode
Iroh is 300 IQ, he purposefully made zukos hair like that so that any self respecting date would ruffle his hair so that zuko doesnt have to come up with an ice breaker.
As someone who grew up on Mako as a kid watching Samurai Jack it broke my heart when I saw this episode. Anyone who doesn’t get the slightest bit emotional when watching this is truly heartless.
The green bag in which Momo sleeps and finds Appa's fur is the same one Sokka bought in "The Blind Bandit". The paw print to which the pygmy pumas lead Momo the same paw print Appa made in his lost days
"But he doesn't know that's his footprint" um yes he does, that's why he curled up like that. Also this wasn't a filler. It progressed the story in telling us something about Appa. The other stories were fillers yes but not Momos.

An uncredited Greg Baldwin provides a solitary line of dialogue for Iroh during the character's tale. When Iroh sings to the crying boy to calm him down, the boy's doll is an Earth Kingdom soldier. In "The Tale of Aang", part of the soundtrack for the end credits can be heard in the background when Aang is looking around in the zoo. The music has only one instrument though, as opposed to the end credits which had many instruments. The hill where Iroh sets the altar for his son is identical to the hill shown in a flashback at the beginning of the episode "Bitter Work".
by far the worst, and by far the most filler-y, main plot in the show was for the episode _avatar day_ -- however, _avatar day_ also had a couple small scenes with iroh and zuko. we wouldn't want to lose those, but we could easily attach them to a different episode and throw _avatar day_ in the garbage.
Mako is the original voice actor of iroh who sadly passed away from cancer. He wrote the song “leaves from the vine” before he died and the picture of iroh son is what Mako looked like when he was younger. If you notice iroh voice sounding a little different in season 3 or some parts of season 2 it’s because he’s played by a different voice actor.

The guy playing General iroh was dying of cancer when he sung his song.
T_T
It's all fun and games till someone starts singing Leaves from the vine.........
Don't know if it's already mentioned but when Iroh starts crying during 'Leaves from the Vine', that's Mako the va crying. He was dying from cancer and I believe it was the last recording he made before passing, and he knew it.
I will always say that Iroh's story should've come last in the episode. WAY too emotional to be a starter.
Everyone’s gangster until Leaves from the Vine starts playing
The haiku contest Sokka has with Madame Macmu-Ling is an Avatar World equivalent of a modern-day poetry slam or rap battle.
"The Tale of Toph and Katara" is the only tale in the episode that focuses on two characters.
Madame Macmu-Ling, the instructor of the Five-Seven-Five Society in "The Tale of Sokka", is named after Lauren MacMullan, part of the series' production team, and writer of that segment.
where is this info dropped?

man i LIked jin, I wished she and zuko had more screen time. I think she would have been a good match for him.
she does appear in a short comic that takes place before Zuko leaves for the fire nation. Its in the Lost Adventures collection
I like her more than Mai
We all do 😂😂
It's not entirely filler, because there is some character background, development, and that final part could be consider story progression in looking for Appa.
The picture of his son is a picture of the real mako. And they named a character in the sequel the legend of korra after him what is not good as the legend of aang but also great.
Oh man, the episode I’ve been waiting for. The feels of Ba Sing Se
"In honor of Mako". Still hurts... =,(
I subbed to u
@@thebatteen3807 Thank you!
The Tale of Iroh, the story that broke the hearts of millions
Iroh, the only man that will invite you to tea and give you a valuable life lesson when you try to rob him, man he really is the best
Next episode is Appa’s Lost Days. I’m not ready. 😭
I can’t wait for them to react from Lake Laogai onwards. Best episodes of the show besides a few in S3
This is the only episode in Avatar: The Last Airbender in which Sokka is seen with his own facial hair.
This is the first time Aang is seen shaving his head. He shaves it again in big episode
And everybody is sorprised by the s3 ep1 when he shows. I'm like 'Didn't you pay attention in Tales of Ba Sing Se? He shaves!'
The feels of Ba Sing Se is to strong in this one each time, and thankful to Iroh helping Zuko try to enjoy being a normal teenager enjoy his youth. But also rip to Mako (Voice of Iroh & many others.)
The only episode that made me almost cry in this show as a kid
Mako is the voice actor of Iroh who passed away from cancer a few days before this episode aired on Nickelodeon
);
Show me someone who says they don't love Iroh, I'll show you a liar.
We love him so much that we named one of our cats after him.
Shot dont look on Twitter the phrase "Iroh is a war criminal " comes up way to much and im not about it
A little fact about the pic of Irohs son, that is actually Mako (irohs VA) when he was young and in the military.
Also, the VA that took Mako’s place refused to sing “leaves from the vine”, saying it wasn’t his song, but Mako’s
My favorite segments of the tales of ba sing se are iroh's,momos, and zuko's
"is this like a filler?"
"theres no filer in this show"
Tale of Sokka..... “what fuckery is about to happen “ 😂
aight y'all get the tissues ready
Lmao😂😂
3:45 only this channel can make me crack up during a sweet moment
Everyone a gansta till Uncle Iroh sings Leaves from the Vine
The whole arc of Appa's lost days always makes me tearbend. Just like Iroh's tale 😔😔💙
Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home
R.I.P. Mako
Iroh’s sons death is the reason he abdicated. He was the first in line to be fire lord. Also Mako is the original voice actor of Iroh, he passed away.
Mako is the original voice actor of Iroh. that song brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it. Iroh is truly my favorite character in the show because there is just so many great things about him. I do believe that one of the main characters in the legend of korra was named after mako.
already a new record for fastest like. i literally commented this 3 seconds before the like. thats insane
Greg Baldwin is not his brother
Did you made that all up or are you repeating false facts that someone else made up?
That song was not the last lines he read for the show. He did not know he would die "soon". Greg Baldwin is not his brother AT ALL, not part of his family whatsoever. Mako was of japanese origin while Baldwin is american. Use your brain, they had to find another VOICE ACTOR to replace him, not his god damn made up brother.
Please have some decency and stop making up false facts about a dead man to get upvotes on youtube
David Yodo you know what, I stand corrected. Thanks for correcting me.
@@lectro_legendary_electroni1852 your welcome
Two things: 1) This is my favourite episode of the whole show because of the emotions for each of the characters as well as it giving them time to breathe amid all the action and lets them go about their day and we see how they could live a normal life. 2) THE NEXT EPISODE IS SO GOOD BUT ALSO THE WORST FOR YOUR HEART
HOW DARE YOU CUT THE "In honor of Mako" part (tearbends)
*everybody gangsta until iroh sings "leaves from the vine"*
This EP has a lot of development for everyone.
In tales of Toph and Katara, Toph got happy when Katara told her she was beautiful Because she could feel her heart beat and knew she was beIng honest, Toph crying when those bully girls told her she was a "Clown" made her cry showing she's very vulnerable and tries to hide it.
This was the first real time Katara was nice to Toph.
Tale of Iroh 😥
Iroh misses his son so he helps out a toddler, almost pre teens and an adult making it feel like he's raising his son all over again and the ending 😥😥😥, RIP Mako.
Tale of Aang
Like Iroh said "the best way to help yourself is by helping others" Aang helped that zoo guy because he misses Appa and helping those animals is like Caring for Appa, it's almost like tale of Iroh but very light-hearted.
Tale of Sokka
LMAO, Sokka learns that he can't always pull the girls in a harsh way
Tale of Zuko
Zuko gets awkward AF when he actually goes out with a normal person and he learns to loosen up a bit and that ending was cute
Tale of Momo
Momo's missing Appa and went on his own journey, he gets his own antagonists who later redeems themselves and he later gets proof Appa Actually is in ba sing se and also that ending 😥😥😥
This is enough to make a old man cry and it’s alright
30 MINUTES AGO HELL YEAH
"For Mako" still hits hard. And I only learned the story behind it this year
10:15 okay Jojo Siwa
I'm not ready for the next episode
I learned it like 4 days ago
*leaves from the vine starts playing*
_already tearing up_ I can’t.... not again.... I’m not strong enough
Everyone gangsta until uncle Iroh start singing leaves from the vine
The Scene was dedicated to the voice actor of iroh , Mako Iwakatsu because of his sad death prior to the actual episodes recording.
I always loved how the only thing that actually got Sokka kicked out was messing up a haiku lol
Filler? Yes. One of the best episodes in my opinion? For sure. Iroh and Momo’s tales got me in the feels 😭
Iroh is 300 IQ, he purposefully made zukos hair like that so that any self respecting date would ruffle his hair so that zuko doesnt have to come up with an ice breaker.
Animals definitely do miss other animals and many are able to show signs of depression or grief
Satan: I'm going to take your soul now old man
Iroh: with that stance?
This episode always makes me cry
This is the only episode where team avatar is seen enjoying there time in ba sing se
"But he doesn't know that's his footprint" um yes he does, that's why he curled up like that. Also this wasn't a filler. It progressed the story in telling us something about Appa. The other stories were fillers yes but not Momos.
Me: *sees snd clicks*
Also me: *just reading the title*
Brain: hey look its iroh, LEAVES FROM THE VI-
Me: oh its time to tearbend
Meanwhile: *bawls in 83743899292 languages*
She's often times so spot on with her predictions, but y'all been knew ig. Yes, I'm new here
This boy literally said “juggled a lot of L’s from the Avatar” 😂😂😂
An uncredited Greg Baldwin provides a solitary line of dialogue for Iroh during the character's tale.
When Iroh sings to the crying boy to calm him down, the boy's doll is an Earth Kingdom soldier.
In "The Tale of Aang", part of the soundtrack for the end credits can be heard in the background when Aang is looking around in the zoo. The music has only one instrument though, as opposed to the end credits which had many instruments.
The hill where Iroh sets the altar for his son is identical to the hill shown in a flashback at the beginning of the episode "Bitter Work".
Iroh's story should have been second to last in this episode.
i can see why it it wasn't. something that sad needed to be balanced out with a little bit of comedy
The order doesn’t rly matter if the emotional impact is there
And they had to have Zuko and Momo round it out because they needed more coverage in my humble opinion
Honestly I wish it was directly in the middle, with everything revolving around it.
You guys are some of my favourite people. Whenever I need a good laugh or feel like I want company, you always are there for me. Thank you!
I just learned how to tearbend.
I think Zuko's date *knows* he's a firebender, but doesn't care
The only filler episode was "The Great Divide"
by far the worst, and by far the most filler-y, main plot in the show was for the episode _avatar day_ -- however, _avatar day_ also had a couple small scenes with iroh and zuko. we wouldn't want to lose those, but we could easily attach them to a different episode and throw _avatar day_ in the garbage.
@@sirmoonslosthismind Avatar Day has Kyoshi being badass and Sokka playing detective.
sirmoonslosthismind it was a filler episode but it still wasn’t a bad episode
In that section of Iroh getting "mugged" I counted five wheezes/sharp inhales 🤣
The tale of Iroh is the most saddest scene in the avatar series
Thing that always makes me cry thug tears is knowing that Mako knew that his life was going to end soon after recording "leaves from the vine"
Before they even get into it
As always
A shot to Makko Iwamatsu... Everytime a tear is always shed from this episode even now 😢🙏🏿💐
This in particular was an episode I could not wait for you guys to get to. Uncle Iroh's scenes always make me cry in this episode. Great stuff guys!
What was iroh gonna do it zuko had brought her back to the crib
Iroh: oooh zuko go easy on her and here is a magnum my nephew
LEEEEAAAAVVVEE
Mako is the original voice actor of iroh who sadly passed away from cancer. He wrote the song “leaves from the vine” before he died and the picture of iroh son is what Mako looked like when he was younger. If you notice iroh voice sounding a little different in season 3 or some parts of season 2 it’s because he’s played by a different voice actor.
Leaves from the vine was the saddest part in the show
This dude, “They ‘bout to fuck.” 😂
