Well that is true 😂 i just wished that they kept Patroklos, Aeon/Lizardman, Viola, Zwei playstyle.. especially Patroklos, cuz we don't have any male sword & shield playstyle.. i don't want to make male fighter to use a feminime stance 😂🥲
@@GReyn God, no! Not Patroklos! That dude deserved to be wiped off the face of the SC Universe! He deserves all the hate from the community because of how the director FORCED him to replace Siegfried as the MC that it EPIC FAILED!
You know what bothers me about Patroklos (besides EVERYTHING else)? Is that in the story they make this big fuss that his fighing style is a "pale imitation" of his mother, and that he should look into himself to find who he really is, hence why there's Alpha Patroklos. The problem is that, to give him some credit (and it's the ONLY credit I give him), his style and stance as regular Patroklos is completely distinct from Sophitia, or at least I can't see nothing on him that would qualify him as a "clone". And what Alpha Patroklos (who's supposed to be his "true self") style is? A clone of Setsuka. Yeah...
Yeah, as a Setsuka main, that was salt in the wound. I did't like either of the twins. They both took from my two favorite characters, Setsuka and Cassandra.
I agree. Despite a lot of shit thrown at the twins, I always thought Patroklos had a lot of personality in his moveset. A lot of his moves had a lot of flair and acrobatics (66B+K is the best exemple) and were very indicative of how full of himself he truly was. Hell, even his stance shows that : he's not even guarding and holding his sword in a way his arm would quickly tire. He's so keen on thinking he's this paragon of justice that his form is terrible, it's great imo.
The idea was that he was apparently trained by Setsuka before V and so sword drawing is his real fighting style but he uses a sword and shield even though he has no training in it purposely nerfing himself due to mommy issues. Of course the stuff about Setsuka was not in the f***ing game but in side material that revealed stuff like how Mitsrugi abandoned his relic stance after seeing Setsuka's skills and almost being killed by them causing him to consider his own sword drawing a farce and deciding to focus on his OG techinques.
Remember how Nightmare is actually Raphael in this game & Viola is also Amy, and not only does this get 0 mention in story mode, but the only way you'd know the former was if you took off his helmet in creation? Or how literally every characters backstory save for the protags are never explained in game, so you'd never know things like Xianghua's kids are actually half-siblings, Natsu is possessed by a demon that Taki failed to kill, Astaroth in this game is actually a mass-produced model made from the corpse of the original's death in 4, and plenty more. Instead, the focus are on a pair of twins so bad, one of the plot points in SC6 (Cassandra's story, specifically) is trying to PREVENT them from being born.
@@oLucasElder the way she knows how to prevent it is because she fought with her original timeline version (which was trapped in astral chaos) and therefore tries to take Sophitia's role in protecting others, and why you ask? Because if she doesn't, she'll fail in saving her sister, and having their family broken into pieces (just like her og timeline version).
I'm so happy to know other people know this. As a Raph main I loved the story take of him being Nightmares next host, considered he's why Sieg was freed in the first place. Dramatic irony
There is a fanfiction story called "Raphael Sorel's Endless Warfare" written by ThalieXVII. It tells the story of how Raphael lost Amy and searched for her even through his possession as Graf Dumas and Nightmare. Calling it a fanfiction may be a disservice as the story follows both the canon and true historical events incredibly faithfully. It has the length and quality writing of a professional novel. The ending takes a different route from the canon but a bit of a more appropriate one if you ask me. This story isn't just another head canon put on paper, but the work of someone who did an incredible amount of research and it deserves all the readers it can get.
I'm the reverse. I was like huh I guess V was the last game makes sense it was kind of a trash heap... wait when the fuck did VI come out? 2b was in it 0_O
This one's particularly sad for me since SoulCalibur is by far my favorite fighting game of all time. The team got shafted by Bamco and when it was received poorly, they just decided the franchise was dead. Bless Okubo's heart for reviving it and giving us SCVI.
What's so great about 6? I'm genuinely asking! Weak visuals. Retelling old story. Not many modes. Character creator stayed the same since 5. Paying for characters we already had in previous games, while the base game itself has only 3 new ones (if I'm correct), 1 of which can't be even used online...
@@turbotrup96 While I'm in the boat of SC6 being really fun to play, and not a fan of literally anything else. I can still give a few substantial ups. Though I'd hard disagree with 'weak visuals' the stylization they used is significantly more appealing than a majority of its contemporaries. Anyways, I'd grant the reintroduction of Weapon Master like mode to the game (Something that has been lacking for a good while and with no replacement since 3.) Despite the lack of modes, I feel like it does run with what it has quite well. Arcade is very much arcade. Though what used to be tied to them in character endings as for the most part been replaced by Soul Chronicle. (Not a fan, but it technically gets the job done.) Likewise it goes hard on Libra of the Soul (weapon master) Character creator while objectively worse than V. It's still fine and you still have the potential to get really creative. And while I'm the first person to 100% dog the game for having DLC being returning characters and no one new, at the very least they're very fun to play with. All of them are just plain fun to use. And that's the best thing I could ask for in a fighting game. Even if I wish they took more risks. Alas, hopefully it would be addressed in a SC7 if we're that lucky. Though I'm of the opinion that literally every other aspect of the game is worse than its predecessors, I gotta take what we can get. It's at the very least better than 4 and 5. And on the right track for a sequel to fix all of said game's issues.
Hey, I worked on the music to this game! I composed Natsu's theme, Zwei's theme, the character creation and a few other things. I could tell some stories from the music team end...
Y'all killed it in the soundtrack department. If only the same could be said for the story. I know the main characters are Greek, but I'm getting some, let's say, Alabama vibes from them.
I remember reading a preview for SC V in a magazine (EGM, I think) during development. The dev team was talking about how the 2011 earthquakes were also a huge hurdle, because the studio had to work while conserving power. I'm surprised I never heard it brought up anywhere else when the game is talked about. Really makes the rushed release date even more ridiculous.
I remember playing the story and one of the first cutscenes had Patroklos murder a man just cause his skin was pale and I was like "oh were playing as the villain" nope just a easily manipulated dumbass.
If he had just been a villain, it would have been more acceptable. Like, you really can't justify the level of unaware-ness Patroklos had considering his upbringing. Could have been less silly if he knew he was seen as a villain, but he just KNOWS those people need to die for the good of everyone.
Yoda was the worst guest character they could possibly have, not because it's Yoda but because of the mechanics they gave him. He was the ultimate ''C'mon man don't be a bitch'' fighter in the entire roster
@@Noperare That piece of trash couldn't be grabbed either. People used to complain at me when i just spammed vertical or low attacks when they picked him. What the hell else am i meant to do? YOU picked a broken character!
That's a proud tradition for Yoda in any PvP game. Fucker was a nightmare in OG Battlefront II. Half the time he didn't even kill you, he just force pushed and pulled you until someone else killed you or him.
Dead or Alive 6 would be a great fighting game for wha happun, considering it's rushed and bad story mode, nonsensical and inconsistent tone down of the fanservice, lack of modes from previous entries, bad DLC and stopping getting support after only 1 year while the gacha Xtreme spin off for PC has been getting updates for 4 years now, and it's director quit Koei Tecmo some months ago as the cherry on the cake.
And the costumes, dont forget the low selection of costumes in the base game and how to get them, you know you've done something wrong when Sonic Forces did it right with its costumes aand how it get them..
@@asianjackass237 Not really. Most of the problems are from Team Ninja/KT decisions. Not having online lobbies at launch while also announcing a $100 season pass (because priorities right...). Not having the tag mode from previous games. The stupid unlocking system for costumes. Post launch even had the stupidity of charging real money to change hair colors even for colors you already paid for, so I guess it was more like renting colors, instead of the in game currency that anybody still playing at that point probably had nothing to use on. Most of the problems of the game just come off as the game only existing to continue DOA5’s DLC campaign. Heck, one of DLC characters for 6 was one that was DLC for Last Round.
I'll never forget SCV for killing Sophitia offscreen, arguably the original hero of the franchise. That could have been at least a heartbreaking cinematic at the start.
She is quite iconic character.. being the Holy female warrior chosen by the gods to destroy Soul Edge and a good mother to protect her children and her family, that’s poetic..
Another huge problem (as least for me) was they ended previous characters' stories really badly. Xianghua stands out in particular. She has a kid with Kilik, abandons the kid, goes along with an arranged marriage, then turns into a stereotypical upper-class wife who tries to force her daughter to be a stereotypical upper-class wife as well. I was so upset when I first read about it. It was such an offensive way to end her character.
There is no way in hell Xianghua would ever do that to Kilik or her daughter. She would probably do the opposite. Such an insulting direction to take her character. 😩
I never realized how long ago 5 was, or how far apart 6 was to 5. Like the only thing I remember about it was the inclusion was Ezio Auditore, with his awesome theme which was a remix of Venice Rooftops. Wait, only ONE new character was added to the roster?! So they gave up hard.
If i remember correctly for some of the box arts they really wanted to sell the presence of Ezio in the game which was partially why some of my friends bought the game
@@SeventhheavenDK and it was never brought up again and we didint get viola in sc6. They could bring her like the brought the alternative timeline cass
"Now when you're talking about fighting games and pushing forward.. well that could mean a lot of things." Not really. You just move closer to your opponent.
It's insane to think how different the series could've been if SCV was given another 5-6 months in development. I loved playing the game, but only for the character customization and online private lobby system. That shit was super fun with friends to see what kind of ridiculous/cool stuff we could come up with.
Not really. 2003 had kotor, beyond good and evil, Prince of Persia sands of time, Max Payne 2, Tony hawk underground 1, ssx 3 and need for speed underground, gta vice city, jak 2, ratchet and clank 2, burnout 2 point of impact and F-zero gx
Fun fact: The story of Soulcalibur V onward was planned all the way up to the hypothetical ninth title had the reboot in VI not happened. And now 5 is seen as a bad future in the new timeline that must be avoided, which is probably deserves to be called.
I actually enjoyed playing Soul Calibur V for the creation feature alone. I had a lot of fun recreating anime characters and fighting against each other. 😅
Just like in shows and movies, timeskips don't always work out for the best story-wise. Meanwhile I personally adored Soul Calibur IV as a game and spent the majority of my time playing that back in the day.
@@jetsettech8804 What do you mean? Hilde was awesome! She was a badass knight lady that wore actual armor instead of walking around in lingerie like the other female characters. Practical armor is hot!
An entry so underwhelming that people forgot it even came out. Too bad because it had a good guest star, Ezio. Which fits better unlike other entries. Namco and Capcom sure didn't have a good reputation back in the early 2010s
Viola would have made for a very interesting story, as Raphael lost his soul to Soul Edge in the pursuit of helping Amy, so now Amy (as Viola) is trying to help Raphael break free and be his old self again. Make her 'good' ending result in freeing Raphael, and her 'bad' ending has her willfully join with Soul Edge to be reunited with Raphael, causing the sword to fall dormant as Raphael has no desire to gain more power anymore.
@@ChargeQM . It seemed more that Viola was going to defect to Raphael. There is a cut voice line of ZWEI where he says "Where is Viola? Answer me!" And Project Soul refers to Viola as an antagonist, even when she never showed any antagonistic traits in-game.
What's awesome about Soulcalibur 6 is that they incorporate some of 5 parts into the story. So they managed to bring it back I hope the series will continue on
SoulCalibur 5 was probably one of my biggest gaming disappointments. The new characters felt tacked on, the combat felt weirdly floaty and the main story was boring. Sophitia will always be my main, so following her kids could have been cool, but they were whiny and dull. I honestly thought SoulCalibur would never come back.
If you mean the clone charcters, sure, but Viola was fucking awesome. I loved setting up weird combos with her, and was actually kinda disappointed to not see her in 6.
Okubo just recently left the team, I think he said he was going back into education or something (said on his Twitter), so I think it's fair to say SC is back on ice. I'm just happy we got SC6 and Okubo & his team really clearly had their hearts in the right place - it was a great entry in a series I wasn't sure we'd see again after SC5.
The SC2 music is what made me stay. But honestly, SCV was where I think single-player content in fighting games start to decline, culminating in SFV’s launch. Judging from Strive, seems that devs still haven’t learnt that lesson.
Apparently Strive they did plan on having more single player content but the delays from Covid effed them. Heard the plan on adding more stuff. Here is hoping we get something in October.
Oh nooooo. I actually really like SCV, but I totally understand why it got so much hate. I thought the underlying fighting system was great, but there was no getting around how rushed and unfocused the narrative was. It was, as the kids say, "a bad look".
@Mr Mistah Eh, Ezio was kinda underwhelming. He only had a handful of viable moves if you wanted to be competitive, everything else was generally weak or gimmicky.
@@gantz22ify Arguably, you're supposed to recognize that he's a very flawed person and has a lot of darkness in his own heart that he needs to work through but... it's still pretty extreme. I would like to see you talk about arguably the most controversial Tales game, Tales of Zesteria, which is somewhat fitting for celebrating Tales of Arise's already being a success.
@@JimTheKnight01 A lot. It was the last game Baba worked on before leaving Bamco too. The game was mixed received but had worse reactions in Japan to the point it was called the "Gundam SEED" of Tales. Some of what went wrong can be pointed at the flawed open world system and cameras but the marketing of the game and a particular character, Alisha and her DLC, as well as the controversy of the anime adaptation just being a cash cow advertisement with Berseria characters added in for hype and the laughable ending that Baba seemed to have took from a fanfic (not even halfly joking) were the real earthquakes before he left (and then vanished again after his studio was shut down by Square Enix before even getting to one game) and joined Delightworks where he is now reported to be allegedly "hard to work with" and was the reason why SEGA's Sakura Taisen mobile game got the axe only after nearly a year of release...
@Leith Aziz PAGY It's already the most successful Tales launch of all time with the PC concurrent player base totalling over the Berseria, Zesteria, and ToS Chronicles' combined.
@@__BlankStudios That’s all very interesting. Makes me wonder just what went down at Square Enix. Even Balan Wonderworld got a release, just how bad must it have been working with Baba?
It's such a shame about SCV. The mechnics, Z.W.E.I, Viola, and the Create a Character were all phenomenal. But as a casual gamer I was so disappointed by how there is literally NOTHING to do in SCV. I love III, IV and VI so much because of all the alternate options besides story mode which V doesn't really have. Also the roster as everyone else has mentioned since the game came out has so many issues. Most of the returning characters deserved their spots, but there were some who should not have been left out. Also HATE how they gave "a
Yes Soul Calibur was king for single player content since before it was called Soul Calibur and 3 arguably went overboard with it (which is why I love it). This one just felt so empty, so little reason to pick it up again and being that I didn't really like the changes, it offered nothing to keep me playing long enough to possibly rethink my opinion of the gameplay changes like I had with 4. Put at least a hundred hours into Edge, 2, 3, 4 and 6 is getting there but I played 5 for a week and never touched it again.
Tekken is very much guilty of this too. Namco's "laws" apparently dictate that if female fighters get dangerously close to their mid-30s they either need to have a baby, have a disciple or stop aging through some bullshit way.
@@agrubohub4009 they still kept Nina and Anna looking like they're in their 20s despite both being in their 40s, Michelle adopted Julia, Kunimitsu was replaced by her daughter and Jun was replaced by Asuka. Characters did get older in 4 by two years but then 5, 6 and 7 all take place in the same year as 4, possibly so that they would not have to find any more excuses for keeping the ladies young or replacing them lol.
@@xxigeorge I think that's kind of a Japan stuff of women older than 25 or so not being considered young and as such not as attractive anymore, that's the reason why for example most DOA girls are all around 18-21 at most despite some of them looking at least 3 years older than that, so it's just a number thing.
There are many things you can say about SC5, but the thing that I always remember it for is getting me into the band Lazy Habits because of the promo Namco had them do. "Bulletin" playing to that mural of Pat facing off against Nightmare will never leave my mind.
Positives: Ezio Auditore was an amazing addition and literally the reason I bought the CE. Negatives: Everything else. Patroklus and his sister had a weird incest vibe to it too.
Glad someone else said it, to this day my best friend and I like to compare the incest vibes we got from those two to other sibilant story arcs in media. “Can’t be as bad as hatred fueled incest.”
I never knew SC5 had this many issues because my friends and I loved it. It was the only Soul Calibur game we were into though, so all of the issues with the characters didn't affect us.
I like how Cassandra addresses the events of SCV as "the bad ending" in her story mode in SCVI. To be fair, the game was decent, I played a lot back then (online mostly), but the lackluster and super short story mode was a bummer for me. Also, the lack of offline modes and small roster of fighters are worthy of criticism. The core gameplay was good and every character played differently (except the mimics ofc), so I don't consider it a failure, but everything that came before and even after (looking at you SCVI) is so much better in everysingle way.
Literally the other day I was thinking if you were gonna do SoulCalibur V! I'm almost ashamed to say that I didn't mind Patroklos and Pyrrha that much but they were definitely a downgrade from Sophitia, Cassandra and Setsuka. Xiba was kinda fun but also a downgrade over Kilik... But... Natsu and Leixia were much more interesting than Taki and Xianghua imo 👀
SC5 was pretty cool Viola and Zwei's play styles were really cool, and so was it's character creation. But it's story was kinda of a slog.... Also who removes Zazlamel in a game involving a time skip when he's immortal!?
The best Soul Calibur for me will always be 2, for the sole reason it had the best guest characters. Also, can you do a video on Dissidia NT? I've love a deep dive into the capstone of the previously successful PSP series that crashed and burned with its hi definition release!
You missed the three filler characters that were EXACT SAME: KILIK, ELYSIUM and Edgemaster! Exactly the SAME stupid random styles! This was SO insulting...
Soul Calibur 3 Chronicles of the Sword mode is to this day the best mode that ever graced a Fighting game. And for this reason is objectively the best Soul Calibur ever. Oh yah soul Calibur 5 is a sad tale.
SCV lacked something IV had. Can't really put it in words... I guess IV felt darker and more difficult > more rewarding after mastering characters. Viola is an amazing character and such a fun one to play as. I mastered her immediately and I'm very sad she or the gameplay didn't make it to the newest game. Also the customization in V was a great improvement.
I'm so happy that you did this episode. I really didn't enjoy this game. And I'm already the only person in my friend group that plays this series. So I didnt really have anyone else to ask to see what they thought. I've always wanted to know why the game played like it did.
Games that had big time jumps: 1. Soul Calibur V 2. Street Fighter 3 3. Tekken 3 4. Mortal Kombat X Notice how one of those were in this series and one of them are gonna be in this series? Hmmmmm....
Add KOF 2001 to the "Wha Happun?" pile as well! That game has an interesting (more like wasted) history behind it's development stemming from SNK's bankruptcy and the plans SNK had for the game that sadly never got implemented. Not just that, but when SNK got to continue doing the series again for KOF 2003, some things from 2001 were removed from canon as well.
I keep thinking that SCV was like that edgy teen phase, and then Lost Swords was like struggling with senior high and college and Unbreakable Soul was like falling down the slippery slope, without a clear image of yourself engraved onto your soul. Fortunately, Soulcalibur VI came after, which is the equivalent of accepting yourself and maturing into a wise adult. Yes, I know not everyone goes through the same path in life, but this is a rough equivalent. Who knows what the future may bring, for us, and for the Soul series? For now, all we can do is to bide our time and bet our souls on the future. And if you're hoping to jump into Soulcalibur/Tekken/etc., don't wait! After all, it's better to have fought and lost than to have not fought at all.
I actually liked the Omega version of Pyrrha, and is one of my fav characters/movesets, but man this game got done dirty in development. Hope 6 lets them see people still want this series.
This one hurt me. I had been super excited for it. It was just missing so much content… I don’t think it was all bad though. My favorite character in all Soul Calibur to play as was introduced. Omega Pyrrha was a blast and I am sad neither her or any of the V characters were in VI.
I actually really like Patroklos' design, moveset and the character development he got but cramming it all in such an underdeveloped story mode doesn't work. Also it's weird that SCV had a better character customization mode than 6. Because 6 cut out the majority of the items and didn't even bring them back as DLC, opting instead for just adding cosplay outfits. There were custom characters I was building in every game from 3 to 5 that I needed to completely reinvent for 6 because of how sparse the selection was.
wow, been watching this channel for a while, and this is the first time a game I worked on showed up (Shinobi 3DS), even if it was in the abandoned IP dungeon. Man, if I can ever figure out a way out of those NDA's I signed, I'd have some stories to tell about the development of that one.
Straight up, in spite of all the beef and problems that i can agree with when it comes to story and newcomers, SCV still means a lot to me for the amount of time i had put into it and the amount of fun i had too being the first Soul Calibur i played
Not only the roster, they also cut the returning character move sets by at least a third of what they had in SCIV and then they hid the remaining fun moves behind an energy bar system :( It just wasn't as fun anymore.
The issue with the timeskip is that they're trying to pull a Tekken 3 by adding these successors, but it failed because it's already the 6th main entry in the series. Many fans are already attached to the characters they loved and played with since the PS1/PS2 games. And those that didn't get replaced by a younger version were just taken out for no reason.
Imagine being Sophitia , not only dying for your duty but also having children that ended up being total jerks and wimps ... whoever developed the story of SCV really hated her so much, nobody cant tell me otherwise.
I remember thinking Soulcaliber peaked at 3. Absolutely love that game, main story and the custom character story. 4 I forget was a game despite playing it a lot. 5 felt really half baked and the combat for the 2 main characters felt clunky to me. Difficult to control.
Worst new protagonists, screwed over several of the old favorites by writing them out in the worst ways possible, botched or missing story modes, extremely thin staff to work on it--it was functional, but not exactly fun. I have my beef with 6 but it was much better overall and I'm glad the series didn't crash and burn out. I admired the idea behind Patroklos being an asshole who needed to go on a journey to grow the hell up and out of his selfish, zealous ways, but his own game didn't give him enough time to do that, and the weird narrative choices didn't help. Also they made him a little *too* obsessed with his own family.
Yeah, that would've been interesting to see. Him becoming more humble as his journey progressed. And yeah, he did seem a bit TOO obsessed with Pyrrha. Then again, he didn't see her in years since they were toddlers, and the rest of his family was either gone or dead.
6:04 Yeah, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The story was a complete miss. While I did enjoy the story at first back in high school, playing through it again made me question a lot of things. What didn’t help was Patrolikis’ character and the story of him and his sister Pyyra being the ones to put an end to Soul Edge & Soul Calibur. Edit: Wow. To think the story could’ve been better had the team not been rushed by Bandai Namco.
It's funny that Patroklos is said to be a clone of Sophitia but his fighting is actually not like his mom's. In fact, the one that is most like Sophitia in fighting style is his sister Pyrrha.
I know this is a Soul Calibur video..but there are two things that instantly elevate any channel to my favourite subs... Jojos reference... and mentions of Breakdown. keep up the great stuff.
I would like to see a What Happened? episode on Sonic Colors Ultimate in the future (don't know how far or close) since there's so much controversy surrounding that "remaster" alone.
Here in Italy, Gamestop got a deal that they gave uou Dompierre if you preordered the game with them. I did it. They gave me the wrong edition. They basically gave me a super exclusive edition, that came with an enciclopedia that explained the backstory for all character and other gadgets that were contained in a book--like gamebox. Among this gadgets there was a funko pop-like statue of Ivy. It took so much space on my shelf until I decided to put them in a box. I spent 93 € for a 2 and a half hour game that didn't feature Dompierre. It traumstised me so much that I decided to buy as little phisycal games as possible.
The funny thing is I'm part of the Soul Calibur 6 modding community and aside from Patroklos, people actually enjoyed the newer characters, not just Z.W.E.I. People have worked hard to bring back characters like Natsu and Pyrrha This just really shows to me that the characters themselves weren't entirely at fault, just their environment Z.W.E.I. especially just got nipped in the bud before he could even grow as a character because of how rushed the game was Hell, I feel like I'd like them so much more if they were able to be whole characters like Grøh and Azwel
I think Soulcalibur 6 must have had an interesting development cycle as well, and while it turned out much better than 5, I get the feeling things were rough behind the scenes. There seem to be artifacts from an older story idea that found their way into the game. Namely, that Groh seems to have been a time traveler at some point in previous drafts of the story, as evidenced by his uncanny knowledge of story events and the modern/futuristic elements of his costume. There’s also all the matter of all the story chapters that are just huge blocks of text. Soulcalibur is no stranger to overindulgent world building (I could spend hours reading the character bios and weapon histories in previous games), but it’s usually separate from the actual story; a nice bonus for those who want to know more. SC6 has character stories that are just explanations of the plot, without any actual gameplay. In addition, there’s unlockable supplemental reading, that further explains the same events. It kinda feels like they didn’t have the time or budget to add additional story events, so they wrote a bunch of exposition instead. I dunno, it’s a game I really enjoy, but it feels slapped together at times. At least there’s something to use your custom fighters in.
I am surprised that you did not mention Ezio’s inclusion. Even a line like "Despite Bandai Namco's attempt to ride off the success of Ubisoft’s Assasins Creed franchise, by including Ezio Auditore as a guest character. It was still not enough to garner additional sales for Soul Calibur V, which only sold a mere 'X'".
In this game they decided to focus more on online multiplayer than solo modes, not a very good choice. The customization was awesome though and I like how we could create characters with devil jin's playstyle, it's a shame we didn't had it in SCVI...
I remember picking up SCV not long after it released since the Soul Calibur games were popular with my friends during 2009-2012 whenever we had all-night gaming sessions at my house. The longtime Kilik main was disappointed that his boy had turned into a mimic boss character and I don't think anyone messed with the Create-A-Soul that night. Compare that to III and IV, where my friends put hours into my save file to unlock more parts and weapons for their sexy women custom characters. I even made a catgirl in IV who had the same name as a friend's sister lol. Good times
One thing I can see that contributed to long gap between 5 & 6 is the development of Super Smash Bros. and Pokken Tournament. Bandai Namco likely thought collaborations with Nintendo would be more lucrative than continuing low-selling franchises like Soul Calibur and Ace Combat. Speaking of which, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon would probably be a good episode
Honestly I liked the idea of a "new generation" in fighting games as long as they keep the older characters or at least the spirit of the older characters(i.e. the Kombat Kids in MKX) in some form.
It wasn't because of her malfestation tho, she made an alchemical potion or something like that. Then Cervantes killed her and the potion made effect reviving her or something like that keeping her soul young.

Yea I’ve never understood the complaint about his fighting style, I saw no major gameplay comparisons
The biggest disappointment of SC6 was that his moveset wasn't represented anywhere. Yeah, he sucked, but he was a ton of fun to play as.
How does she prevent and why? (Storywise, of course, because we know they are boring)

There was a Soul Caliber 6??
I STILL do that and I played a bunch of SC6 lol
Is it that hard to write Calibur instead of Caliber?
This one's particularly sad for me since SoulCalibur is by far my favorite fighting game of all time.
The team got shafted by Bamco and when it was received poorly, they just decided the franchise was dead. Bless Okubo's heart for reviving it and giving us SCVI.
I also have the same feelings
This hits hard.
Took the words right out of my mouth. Thank God we got another chance with SCVI which is great. Plus my boy zasalamel is back!
@@turbotrup96
While I'm in the boat of SC6 being really fun to play, and not a fan of literally anything else. I can still give a few substantial ups.
Though I'd hard disagree with 'weak visuals'
the stylization they used is significantly more appealing than a majority of its contemporaries.
Anyways, I'd grant the reintroduction of Weapon Master like mode to the game (Something that has been lacking for a good while and with no replacement since 3.)
Despite the lack of modes, I feel like it does run with what it has quite well. Arcade is very much arcade. Though what used to be tied to them in character endings as for the most part been replaced by Soul Chronicle. (Not a fan, but it technically gets the job done.)
Likewise it goes hard on Libra of the Soul (weapon master)
Character creator while objectively worse than V.

Literally some chapters later he said he's a "hOlY WaRrIoR" yet he killed a man just because he was sus.
If he had just been a villain, it would have been more acceptable. Like, you really can't justify the level of unaware-ness Patroklos had considering his upbringing. Could have been less silly if he knew he was seen as a villain, but he just KNOWS those people need to die for the good of everyone.

You're telling me. Life's a trip.
And none of that is mentioned in-game, you need to read material on internet (the easiest way at least) to learn about it.

Viola is an amazing character and such a fun one to play as. I mastered her immediately and I'm very sad she or the gameplay didn't make it to the newest game. Also the customization in V was a great improvement.
Viola technically did make it into SC6, though not her gameplay, if you know what I mean.
never was there a fighting game with a more detestable protagonist
I'm so happy that you did this episode. I really didn't enjoy this game. And I'm already the only person in my friend group that plays this series. So I didnt really have anyone else to ask to see what they thought. I've always wanted to know why the game played like it did.
Games that had big time jumps:
1. Soul Calibur V
2. Street Fighter 3
3. Tekken 3
4. Mortal Kombat X
Notice how one of those were in this series and one of them are gonna be in this series? Hmmmmm....
Don't know why you're talking about DMC 2 considering every single DMC game has a time jump and DMC 2 doesn't even have the longest one...
@@treelicker2145 oh sorry I don't know the dmc lore I'm gonna take it off the list. Thanks for the heads up
5:16 No, not those holes. Anything but those holes.
Yes, KOF 12 (and arguably 13) please! Such an interesting case!
I actually liked Pyrrha Omega.
'GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!'
Sophitia: "Screw this game I'm gonna go meet up with some of the Ninja Gaiden/DOA cast to be in Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate."
I think alpha patrokolos was especially bad because he literally has Setsuka's moveset. When they could have literally just added setsuka back lol.
Yeah, I wanna see her back too. Except for Patrokolas, fuck that guy.
Lol same.. at least i played it in PC and has mod 😂
wow, been watching this channel for a while, and this is the first time a game I worked on showed up (Shinobi 3DS), even if it was in the abandoned IP dungeon.
Confession: SCV is the only game I kept a positive win/loss ratio. And my main was Pyrrha Omega.
...you can throw your tomatoes now.
You do great work man, this stuff gets me through the day. I work remotely and have watched nearly every damn episode. I’m beginning to rewatch them.
Man, Matt just reminded how much capcom has showed up on this show. It's nice to see another developer honestly
SoulCalibur V was my first Soul Calibur game...and what got me into the series.
Same !!!
I remember being excited for this game as a kid all because Ezio was in the roster. I didn't even play Assassins' Creed as a kid.
@Code Turtle Ezio's master assassin robes has always looked good in every game it appeared in
I would like to see a What Happened? episode on Sonic Colors Ultimate in the future (don't know how far or close) since there's so much controversy surrounding that "remaster" alone.
People have worked hard to bring back characters like Natsu and Pyrrha
This just really shows to me that the characters themselves weren't entirely at fault, just their environment
Z.W.E.I. especially just got nipped in the bud before he could even grow as a character because of how rushed the game was
Hell, I feel like I'd like them so much more if they were able to be whole characters like Grøh and Azwel
It's scary to me that I've spent MUUUUUCH more hours in Character Creation than actually playing SC5.
It's weird that Mitsurugi and Kilik didn't aged in SCV, in Ivy's case that's justified: Due to her Malfestation, she stops aging in SCIV.
Even with her being possessed by soul edge or whatever. We all know the real reason why they didn't age her.
I’m pretty sure 6 is a reboot which is why they’re not o l d
Nobody Likes older woman
Mitsu is old in SCV.
It wasn't because of her malfestation tho, she made an alchemical potion or something like that. Then Cervantes killed her and the potion made effect reviving her or something like that keeping her soul young.
