I’m 56 I had the first Honda 250R three wheeler in my town in ky. Back in 85 … it was the fastest thing in the woods and the lake flats until my best friend bought a banshee a few years later it was a beast! It always beat me in a drag race!
You remember it how it is in real life. I love the R but some guys ain't willing to admit what you just said.
listening to all the high, strung two strokes is like music to my ears when the power bands come on and the reeds start movin wow.
Love it!
I really wish my dad was still alive so we could go for one last ride on the Harleys. 😞
There was no better feeling cruising down the road on the bike and looking over and seeing my dad right there beside me in his black leather jacket.
Young man you tell your pops how much you love him every chance you get because the day will come that you won't be able to.
Awesome watching yall hangout 2gether 💯
Thanks Mike I hear you time goes so fast. We don't even realize it.
For sure I felt that I was a long haul truck driver for 20 years and you get to think and see a lot on the road literally driving my life away. I realized a lot of things I may have had nice house thank God it provided for my kids they never lacked anything every 2 to 3 years I'd get ex-wife a new Eddie Bauer or Navigator my point is I missed everything I never enjoyed much the fruit of my labor but more importantly my family the true blessings in life pardon me for all that I finish by saying I lost my mom and I cherished tried to makeup for all those years still I'm grateful for the last 4 years almost everyday I saw them and enjoyed time together I still have my father thank God but he's up there very fragile I want to be with him helping him just anything hangout. Also many years ago I made a choice to let everyone know I love them that they really hear and feel my love for them because this life is way too short and sensitive your treasures are those people who you love and love you nothing is more valuable. Thank you again & Blessings to All of Y'all and Fam.
@@elcidcampeador42 thanks for the words of wisdom
Hillbilly here I enjoy your videos, because nobody else does them where they match different rigs and it’s nice to see that somebody enjoys the hard to find toys so keep the good videos coming and be healthy
Thanks brother appreciate the comments and you watching!
I've been watching y'alls videos for a few weeks now and I dont know what I love more... You having the best time with your son, or the vintage 2 stroke machines!!! Anyway, keep up the great work!
Really appreciate you guys enjoying these videos! We have fun making them!
Love all your vintage 3 and 4 wheeler vids. Keep up the great work.
Appreciate it!
That’s real sweet thanks guys for taking the time and have a little bit of fun. I’m glad to see at least you guys came through safely and that nothing bad happened you never know right but hell that was fast by the way I’m picking up my 19 85 Atchonda 200x , fully reconditioned and 100% rebuilt tomorrow watching you guys have so much fun I can’t wait the last time I had one I was your son’s age and then December I turn 55 never too old to have a blast. Be safe guys. Keep on making great videos can’t wait to see the next one.
Awesome that's exciting that you're getting a mint 200x! Thank you for watching!!!
Excellent video ! I had a 2000 banshee and my son had LT80 then Blaster , then Z400 then YFZ450 , we had so much fun riding together . I lost him in 2020 and this video sure brings back such priceless memories! If you haven’t told your son or dad today “ I love you “ I HIGHLY ENCORAGE YOU TO !!!
Will do rob. Thanks for watching!
for all the wins or losses and all the money gold and glory in the world i would pick the 86 250R ANYDAY OF THE WEEK.
I don't disagree. It's the overall most legendary.
Word.
Love this as far as dad and son doing stuff together that’s how it should be
Appreciate you watching!
I like that you let ur kid ride trikes. I have a son around the same age and taught him how to ride such "horrifically dangerous" 🙄 machines the right way and he never got hurt on one. In my opinion a three wheeler is only dangerous to inexperienced riders. Never had a problem on them myself in 40yrs and rode and raced them. Prefer my YZ250's but like having a three wheeler for fun.
I hear you, 3 wheelers are definitely the most difficult to ride in my opinion but it can be done just need to gain experience.
Man this brings back memories, i had a big red 3 wheeler when i was about 15 and man i rode that thing from sun up to sun down, My mom just let me have at it and I taught myself how to ride it. Thankfully I never tried anything stupid while riding and never got hurt or wrecked it😊
@jdubb0113 I hear ya man, luckily never got hurt and did a fair share of stupid shit on them lol. I'm from the U.P. of Michigan so most people my age grew up around 3 wheelers and ya just figured out how to ride em. No overprotective parents thinking they were death machines and can't remember any friends actually getting hurt on one. Have more broken bones than I can count from MX bikes, none from three-wheelers.
@@jasonjaeger4042 That's Awesome! 😁
Man the trikes where great I had more fun on my 250r that the 500 quad
As a 3-wheeler guy that grew up in the '80s, I am a little disappointed that the ATC could not get the win, but these are both awesome machines. Maybe your Tri-Z or Tecate-3 will have better luck. Thanks for the great videos!
We will try! Thanks for watching.
It’s the tire’s fault put some good meats on the atc and it will put the power down.
@@lukecombs5242 I hear you.
Honda all the way it has less Ccs than the Yamaha and 1 less cylinder
Huh?
How in the….. do you manage to have all the old greats in ATC R
BANSHEE , TECATE, and a TRI Z
I think the 250r would have been REAL close with better tires. I had one stock, then built it,ran 119 fuel also. Was a window maker.
Yes it needs better tires. I agree.
I had To go to our local small plane airport to get that stuff back in the mid 80's.. if I remember correctly it was 1 full 12 oz. container of Golden Spectro to 4 gallons of fuel...
Story of David and Goliath
I just did a little math and the 250R has a slightly better power-to-weight ratio than the Banshee. I would expect the R to win on paper. Of course gear ratio and tire size make a difference. Adding rider weight also throws off the ratio math. This formula works better with cars. Just divide weight by horsepower. Anyway, here are the numbers:
1986 Honda ATC250R
38 horsepower
289 pounds
7.60 pounds per horsepower
2005 Yamaha Banshee 350
48 horsepower
386 pounds
8.04 pounds per horsepower
In this case I think the rider weight is the biggest factor.
@@TheMapleDude1 Agreed. Adding a 160 to 190 pound rider makes a big difference on these small machines. For what it is worth, the ATC even has a slight power-to-weight ratio advantage over Quadzilla. That is why I thought the R had a chance to win your tournament.
1988 Suzuki LT500R Quadracer
51 horsepower
392 pounds
7.68 pounds per horsepower
@@TheMapleDude1 You were correct about rider weight. Even though the 250R does have a better power-to-weight (P2W) ratio than the Banshee and Quadzilla without riders, once you add the rider weight, the R comes in last place. I added you and Jack’s weights to the P2W ratio below. It looks like the closest race between these 3 should be you on Quadzilla vs. Jack on the Banshee.
JACK:
1988 Suzuki LT500R Quadracer
51 horsepower
392 pounds + 155 = 547
10.72 pounds per horsepower
2005 Yamaha Banshee 350
48 horsepower
386 pounds + 155 = 541
11.27 pounds per horsepower
1986 Honda ATC250R
38 horsepower
289 pounds + 155 = 444
11.68 pounds per horsepower
The Maple Dude:
1988 Suzuki LT500R Quadracer
51 horsepower
392 pounds + 185 = 577
11.31 pounds per horsepower
2005 Yamaha Banshee 350
48 horsepower
386 pounds + 185 = 571
11.89 pounds per horsepower
1986 Honda ATC250R
38 horsepower
289 pounds + 185 = 474
12.47 pounds per horsepower
@@Cobra37061 that's good info to take into consideration. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
@@TheMapleDude1 No problem, I was curious myself. I'd much rather be racing your machines than playing on a calculator. Lol. Looking at those numbers again, Jack on the R should be able to beat you on the Banshee just barely. So maybe the R's tires are another factor.
The Banshee is undeniably fast. But what I really take from this vid is just how good the old 250r is to hang in there that well against a twin cylinder engine with 100cc more displacement. Couple times I hear the R, it sounded like you may have shifted into the 5th and 6th a little early. I think if you let it eat a little more the ol' R would have narrowed the gap a bit. Not trying to be hyper critical, just a casual observation by a guy who owns a pair of 3rd gen Rs and been riding them since the early 1990s. Yeah, we can get into how to better get the power to the ground with better tires, suspension setup, etc, but this was a very cool video to watch as are your other installments. Very much enjoyed 🙂 Carry on fellers and keep those legends alive!! 🤘🏻
Great comments. Yes that R was a little weak going into 6th gear. It's different than my Tri Z and T3 in that regard. So we have yo keep the RPMS higher there. Funny thing about all these videos is we get people telling us we shift too early and others say too late... all within the same video. Oh well, we're having fun.
Having fun is all that really matters my friend 🍻
Those look like the original Ohtsu's on the back of the R also. That is an Awesome trike! I had an 84. I would LOVE to drive an 86. Keep making great content!
Another guy thought that. But they are NOT the original tires.
Just saw the quadzilla race. You mean to tell me you guys have a banshee, quadzilla, and a 250R!? My 3 favorite machines. You got a subscriber, brother!!!
Also- I have a 1986 250SX 4 stroke. I can not keep the front wheel down in a race. How you two kept the wheel down and put the power to the ground is beyond me. Very impressive
Thanks for watching! Yeah we have those and a few more. Check out the collection video.
LOVE THEM!!! WISH I STILL HAD THEM... WILL FIND SOME AGAIN...
We have been looking for years. They are still out there.
Had both of these back in day... Lots of fun... Cool video...
Thanks for watching!
Kids shifts faster and clutches the hit better. Neither need new clutches lol. This was awesome. First video I seen. I sub!!!
Thanks man... I'm getting old... tryin to get better.
Those old 250R's were insane. The 4 wheelers were used in woods racing for over a decade after they quit making them. The 3 wheeler version had to have been one of the most dangerous ATV's ever made. Great stuff
Live lyfe on 3 wheels! Epic machines!
You just had to know had to ride them. Can't turn at high speeds without leaning into it.
Kawasaki Tecate would smoke a Honda 250R
Love 2 strokes. Growin up MotoCross and woods ridin in the 80s there is nothing like the sound and feel of a 2 stroke. That Honda is an amazing time machine. Tires and 30lb weight difference huge factors on machines like that.
Yeah I totally agree with you. Thanks for the comments
dude your still a mad man on those wheelers!!! have fun and stay safe.
Will do!
I had a 250R when I was a kid and it was some of the best memories looking back even my childhood buddies still talk about it. But when the Banshees came out even though I had the R I still wanted a Banshee. 25 years later I pick up a 2003 off a co-worker and haven’t been disappointed. Something about that two stroke does something to ya!!!
Yep I love it. The sound the smell. Although the first 3 wheeler I had was a Suzuki alt125!!
Honda 125M ✌🏻
The sound off that 250R
It's so unique
Yeah it's a great sound!
The 250R needs new tires!
Yeah
I love the fact you 2 are spending quality time with your son i would like to Own a 88 honda 250r racing fourwheeler its a slick looking and fast machine
Thanks man..
I appreciate it. I did recently get an 86 trx 250r. The 88 looks better in my opinion though.
Always fun.... my daughter I had her little yamaha blaster built. Full port n polish, 34mm intake, and 34mm mikuni carb. 10.3:1 compression piston. Even worked transfer ports. Plus head work, taller sprocket up front and smaller out back. Plus changed tire size up front to 23x7 and out back 22 inches tall. Now it will smoke a Polaris scrambler 400 2-stroke 4x4 in a drag race for two high line pole lengths. It now tops out at just over 70mph stock was 55mph or so
Now that sounds like a hot little blaster!
@@TheMapleDude1 it's running on the edge of non oxygenated 91 octane, use amsoil 2-stroke oil in the oil injection. Her boyfriend Bailey has a sportsman 1,000 both of them claim when they drag in the small town, both are dead even for a city block before the big polaris slowly pulls away on top. My daughter was disappointed, I just laughed and tried to explain to her that's 800cc different, and with riders weight plus machine probably 600 pounds lighter for the blaster with her clutching through the gears. I keep bothering her to video the drags.....
The banshee is easier to ride and get the power down.
The other kept lifting front end, it had more power but couldnt use it.
Father son videos are priceless. 👍🍀🇺🇸
Thank you sir.
350x w/ big bore ❤ at 16 was AMAZING lol

Oh man that 250r 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 I’ve owned a banshee, 2006, loved it but have always wanted an 85/86 ATC250R I had an 82, not even in the same league!!
You're right... the 3rd generation was by far the best. Liquid cooled.
@@TheMapleDude1 those 250r were nothing to play with and the fact that still today are comparable to a banshee… that’s gotta say a lot

Very cool, Hello from Janesville Wi!
Hi thanks for checking in!
Awesome stuff! Miss my old 02 shee. I always took off in 2nd onna launch. Smoked everything. Lol

That 3 wheeler is nasty!
Sure is
I had either an 85 or 86 250r first year they were liquid cooled .It had extended axels that thing was insane
The best 250Rs!
In car racing, we always say you can't beat cubic inches well in off-road, you can't beat CC's. So awesome to see you and your son doing these things Together God is good all the time.
Thanks man... yes we are so fortunate.
I raced atv motocross back in the 80’s. This scrawny guy always got the hole shot on a banshee with pipes, then his chain would fall off. I usually got second on a Paul Turner Quad Racer. That thing would sing. The Honda’s were the slowest at the start, then they would take off and leave us. The banshee had displacement, the Quad Racer had a power valve and the Honda had everything else.
In your opinion how much would putting an aftermarket pipe and silencer on a 250 quadracer help it out?
We have a 100% stock 88 quadracer.
Respect to your intent and appreciate the content. My 1985 Kawasaki Tecate was always white knuckle fun!!!
Thanks for watching..
Is like to get an 85! They look so weird.
Ive owned both of those machines. The banshee I had wasn't much on low end but the r was a beast. 3rd gear is where the banshee really woke up.
That's exactly right!
Love that 2 stroke sound I like both but I've always wanted a Honda 250R was very surprised it only won once but I assumed banshee was a 250 not a 350 so of course it figures now👍much thanks for the video and bringing back those cool memories now I gotta go find one either or maybe even a Kawasaki tecate, remember those especially with the flat tracks?!🔥💨👍
I have a tecate. Check out some other videos.
Banshee may be faster but the 250R is hard to beat for overall fun. Great video.
250r is the icon!
The ATC 250R was freaking nasty to ride. Wish I still had it.
Yeah it's bad!
I know I had the poster in my garage above where it was…..it said beginners need not apply
Good race, I think Jack is faster LOL.
Keep putting out these killer videos with these killer machines & don't worry about the negative comments, there's always gonna be trolls out there.

@@TheMapleDude1 I'm subscribed and notifications are on so I'm ready.
Both of those machines are legendary
Yes sir!
Nothing better than the sound of a 2 stroke
I agree.
I had a 250R quad back in the day and all my buddies were running banshees, in a straight line the banshee had the advantage but when it came to getting in and out of corners and the jumps my 250 ate them up. I saved up some money and had my uncle work some magic with my engine in his machine shop and developed a 270 custom big bore setup that evened the score. A stock banshee had no chance after he got done with his wizardry. Those mid 80s early 90s Honda 250 engines were pretty stout to begin with but became monsters when you started messing with bore, stroke, port timing, reeds, carberators, and freer flowing exhausts.
It would be interesting to see what kind of power these two strokes would have made if innovation had continued and they hadn't been replaced by the four stroke bikes entirely. A four stroke does not have the same level of invigoration when it is in its power band. I liken the sound of dozens of 2T engines in the power band to a symphony orchestra four strokes are more like a bass drop CD lol! Great video be safe you two and have fun.
I agree with you my friend there's something about hitting that powerband on a 2 stroke! These old atvs are kind of like the old muscle cars... lots of stories and legends behind it.
@@TheMapleDude1 for sure. The king of the quads was the Quadzilla Suzuki 500 two stroke. Then right behind that was the Polaris 500 Scrambler. When it came to the four stroke quads the Raptor 700 and DS 650 were the two fastest Sport ATV when I was still into sport quads. I have often considered getting a Honda 250R quad frame and modifying it for a CR 500 engine. It could be a bit sketchy given the power but it would be one heck of a ride. Be kinda like putting a Big Block in a Chevette Scooter Lol!
@killacoiler1707 about like that!
Both of these are sweet rides.
Thanks man.
You guys are gittin better!!!lol! All that matters is that it's the best quality time together!

What is the gearing on the 250r? Didn't sound like it was reving out at all.
It's all stock gearing, stock tire size.
I still have an 85 ATC 250R, back when I first got it I did some minor engine work, threw a paul turner on it,wider axle w/ fresh rears, smaller front rim and tire.
It was the fastest thing around for years.
People would show up looking for me at the pit to line em up.
Banshee after banshee would lose and boy would those guys need an excuse every time.
Finally got beat by a fully raced out TRX 330R, followed by a nasty built banshee a few weekends after.
Awesome memories man. I think I have the R running better now and we'll do it again.
@TheMapleDude1 Throw a Boyesen Rad valve on that puppy, those stock intakes are so restrictive.
Definitely need fresh rear tires to make it more fair too.

You should do the 2 stroke 350 three wheeler vs banshee 😮
350x vs banshee?? We can do that!
You can use a 350 Wolverine gear shifter also as a clutch lever and dump it on 28" mud tires to pretty much launch on anything with a 150lb rider, until lack of cc's lol
Ok
Banshee was rated stock 47 crank hp and ATC was 38hp but one could fit the CR250 top end to it and bring power up to 48.

I rolled into a race one time with my 250r which was built in 2006 based off the 88 gears/cases and got asked if it was a banshee.. Just pissed me off. I've gobbled up a few banshees with that bike drag racing. Never seen a banshee race mx though
Banshee is fast but obviously this isn't a official test... but it is kind of a real world, 2 average riders test to see what happens. But I hear you.
Why did you use the clutch? The only time I use the clutch taking off in first gear. You loose a bit of time otherwise. Did your son use the clutch after 1st gear? I bet he didn't.

The problem for the 250R is it wants to wheelie. You really need to lean forward to get the front tire down. Not many people will even ride a 3 wheeler these days. They are way more fun than. A quad. Quads are more stable, but they are also bigger and heavier when the fall on you.
Very true.
The kid had perfectly moved forward enough in these races to keep the R’s front end down. Especially with the surface they were on and condition of the tires. Your comment would be pertinent if the front wheel was lifting excessively from 1 through 3 or 4 but it wasn’t.
The rear tires on the atc250r are original also and yes they are way down on tread compared to the banshee
Actually they are not the original Ohtsu tires.

On that road the tires on the 250R are a good turn the compression on the rear shock all the way down turn the rebound all the way put the kid on it . I leave in third rev it up it WILL spin but it will beat the Banshee. Have one of those too. Have fun
Wow thanks sometime we can try it!
