A minor correction : Larry is not the only one with 3 consecutive League MVPs - he is in that rarified list with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. But those three legends are the ONLY ones in NBA history to achieve that feat as of yet.
Also, not only is Larry IN the 50-40-90 club (2x at that), he is THE founder of the 50-40-90 Club !

That shot at 11:51… if you look closely, he released that near the baseline. Go stand down there-he’s behind the backboard. Not by a lot, but enough. That means he had to aim for the FRONT of the rim because about a quarter of the back of the rim is obstructed by backboard. He did that at the last second of a game. That’s an INSANE shot. It’s just insane if you take in the degree of difficulty.

I was a military brat and moved to Boston in 1981. Bird was a cerebral assassin. He knew where everyone was at all times and was always two moves ahead of everyone else. Watch his passing highlights, he could change the direction and spin of the ball with a flick of his wrist. LeBron is a physical monster, Jordan can fly but no one has ever understood the game like Larry Legend.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, and was what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!

At the 10:10 minute mark, look at what he did. Danny threw him a deep pass. His back was to his basket and he jumped in the air, caught the ball, twisted his body 180 degrees, threw the ball All Before his feet touched the floor and got nothing but net. That is one of the most amazing shots I’ve ever see. Oh, and it was a buzzer beater too! Amazing, simply amazing.

I’m old enough that this Larry/Magic NBA era was the salvation of the league - I remember the pre-79 NBA , with the games (even the damn finals!) being tape-delayed and only shown after the night’s news. I mean damn… the networks were showing re-runs and old b&w movies because they got better ratings than the NBA !
That 79-92 era pulled the NBA out of the ditch of potential bankruptcy- due in large part to the fire that Larry and Magic brought !
From “almost dead” in 79 to “global phenomenon” by 92. With the Olympic Gold “Dream Team” to cap it off with the best-of-the-best getting to finally play together!

Some things to think about. Has your favorite player ever...
    - called his shot in a live game more than one time and made that called shot?
    - told people he's going to play left-handed and then score 27 points left-handed, 20 points right handed and hit the game-winning shot from the corner double covered at the buzzer?
    - hit a shot over the backboard from behind it in a live game?
    - come one steal away from a quadruple double in just three quarters of play?
    - make a game-winning play on the last second of the last game of a finals series in at least two separate series?
    - play the game that was of such high caliber that (the other team) was celebrating outwardly on numerous different shots that he hit, proven by the players being fined for such?
    - break a bone in your face and then come back in, lead and rally your team to a comeback win, in yet another game five final?
    - play his entire career and in that footage never find one instance of slacking, hanging back or giving up on a play? I know that one's going to eliminate a couple real quick!
I could go on, there's more. Larry Bird was just different! Few other players, maybe Jordan and couple others played with as much confidence in my opinion. The confidence he had is how all the above things happened.

      1. Modern players probably wouldn't do it anyway, but also they wouldn't be allowed to come back into that game, since Bird was concussed. So it's not fair to say that no other player has done that since--it's now against league policy.
      2. What game-winning plays did Bird make "on the last second of the last game of a finals series"? None of the Celtics' championships were won on a last-second play, and Bird only made 3 last-minute plays to win playoff games in his career--the 1987 steal, the 1985 steal agt. Philadelphia and the pass to Dennis Johnson in the 1985 Finals, which wasn't in the last game. What stat are you trying to recall here?
The rest of these are correct.

  • @iambecomepaul

I saw the Celtics in Indianapolis during the heydays. Here’s what I can note about being there. With MJ, you were always aware of him when he was on the floor. Your eyes always went to him. Bird? Bird was quiet. He never looked like he was doing anything. You’ve seen the mixtape -the man was amazing. But it never looked like that from the seats (at least when I watched it). Bird was like machine oil. He worked his way throughout the entire engine… transparently… easily. I think he ended up with something like 28/7/5 or so. I don’t recall. It was a ho-hum night for him. What amazed me was his effortless exceptionalism. He excelled without looking like he was trying. MJ was visibly great. Bird was quietly effective: like as assassin.

Honestly I think if basketball required some text book reading then Larry bird should have several chapters in that book. Every trick that larry had was at a level so high that it made even Jordan sweat cause he knew that one man alone no matter how good he is can not beat a team that knows how to work perfectly together. Every thing Bird brought to the field changed how the game could be played. Even his trash talking should be in that book as a warning on how to focus your mind and keep your emotions in check or else those who trash talk you will win in the end. It still shocks me that none of the teams are doing that already. A team that could match bird would be impossible to beat but alas none I have seen thus far is even close to what the celtics in their prime could do when motivated to do so.

Larry is my best of all time! He could do it all. He impacted every game in a major way. Shooting. Rebounds. Steal. Rebounds and steals started so many of his best passes. I hated him back then. He killed my Sixers all the time. He played his last 2 years with back problems. and surgery on both Achilles.

I was with you right up until you said you'd probably put him somewhere between 6 and 8 on your list of all-time greats. 6 and 8 my a** is all I got to say about that. I'll let someone else list the reasons that's way off...and I'm guessing there are some Bird fans who will.
That said, apart from that inexplicable error in judgment, I really enjoy your reactions because you are so knowledgable, and able yourself to see so much and appreciate it. I do wish, along with some others, that you would, although continuing to make all your great commentary, pause, so you (and we) can also hear the video commentary-- I'd like to hear your reaction to what the people are saying , as well as your reactions to the action on the screen. These are some of the greatest players in the history of the game, so it would be fun to see/hear your reactions to what they're saying...though I'm thinkng maybe the reason you do it as you do is because you've seen these Bird vids before-- maybe more than once-- so already know what's being said, and wouldn't have a spontaneous reaction.
Sorry you lost your mind-- as you obviously did when you were even considering placing Bird so low on your list-- I wish you a full and speedy recovery!

As you continue to watch Larry bird videos from me, IF you do, you will see how I reassess his ranking as I learn more of the details. Though, regardless, I think he should be firmly placed in top 10 at a minimum.

Even as a shell of himself he was able to beat Jordan and I mean no disrespect to Jordan. But Bird was 6-0 in the playoffs and 20 something to 11 in the regular season.
Check out his rookie season highlights, he took a team that was 2nd worst in the league to the playoffs his rookie year and he did it without any of the hall of famers associated with him. The year he only played 6 games? Those hall of famers didn’t make the playoffs. People always say that he had the better team but don’t realize that he made them better.
I’ve got Bird over Jordan but there’s no question about Jordan’s talent. My main issue is that Bird won three straight 3 point contests. Jordan entered it one time and has the record for the worst score ever in the competition. I’m not saying that Jordan wasn’t clutch, far from it. But 3 points are better than 2, so while dunks are fun to watch, they don’t count any more than a layup.

LMAO ... Larry not in the top 5 all time ... insane! You don't judge individuals by how many team championships, you look at their individual body of work. Magic was phenomenal but frankly he's ranked as high as he often is based on 5 rings. Larry's career numbers are better than Steph Curry yet many try to put Steph above him. Top five ... MJ, Bill Russell, Wilt, Larry, Magic, bench of Lebron, Steph, Pistol Pete, Kareem, Shack ... yeah Kobe doesn't make my top 10 I disqualify him because of what he did and his legal team did to the young woman in Colorado. I realize many say who cares but seriously if that had been your mother, sister, daughter, or some other woman you cared about with a hand print around her neck would you dismiss it? No, I don't know her but I have known other sexual assault victims so I can't ignore it. Read the transcripts, and about how the legal team broke the rape shield laws with leaks to the press. Kobe didn't tell them to stop he was fighting for his life and freedom but that doesn' t make it okay to condone what was done.
