Cycling Advances: 5 Key Areas of Improvement in 30 Years
Вставка

- As an avid cyclist of over 35 years, it is natural to evolve with certain aspects of the sport while also realizing that all innovation is not necessary. These are five areas that I believe have evolved for the better over the last 30 years, solely based on my use and practice.

I remember when I started riding as a teenager that I had a pair of wool shorts with a natural chamois on them. Every time I washed them it took two to three days for the chamois to dry out completely, and then it would be stiff........Same with my first couple of jerseys......they took forever to dry out...... As for shoes, I had a pair of Detto Pietros, all leather with laces.......hairnet "helmets".......white socks were mandatory...........
We must have started at the same time, I went through the same things and the changes in technology have been amazing!
One that strikes me is access to information. As someone who is transitioning from "I use my bike regularly" to "I love riding my bike", I get so much out of youtube. Eg. Info on repairs, tips, techniques, enthusiasm, goals, evaluating unusual ideas, events etc. I found your channel a few days ago and I get the sense there's alot of good info lying in wait. Thanks for the uploads!
It's a great passion. Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Great video, keep up the good work, I agree 100%. I started riding when I was 40, I’m not closing on 77 and still at it.
Hi Luis, I had a titanium bike for over 25 years. I just updated my titanium bike. The difference was weight (frame). My current titanium bike is made of a better grade of titanium. I also moved from rim brakes to disc. I love my new titanium bike. It handles so much better. ❤❤ The ride is just right for me. It helps because I am a light rider.😊😊 Technology and improvements in knowledge of nutrition, training has really expanded.
Perfect! Exactly the kind of info I wanted to hear. Congrats on the new bike👍🏾
I ride a Klein Q-Carbon; I love it. It is a nice as the day I purchased it new. Plus, I could not afford a new carbon bike 😮
Thanks for sharing Shel👍🏾
Love Klein probably one of the best brands dang shamed to trek bottom and shut them down man. Client has always been ahead of its time. I have a client all the parts that belong on that series built up. It’s fun. I want to get the bike to where it’s worth about $10,000for me not to sell❤
@@stevenwilliams7845 My understanding is TREK purchased Klein but could not duplicate the frame. The Klein welders did not want to work for trek and would not continue with them. I'm unsure if that is true. I do love the bike, it is all original except the brake pads and chain :-) Showroom condition.
I really like the reviews and solo monologues on this channel. Love the history on the specific video. Great job!
Lats lookin swole there Luis 😂Camera angle? edit: Bro, you forgot a huge one: Shoes and pedals!
Gains Bro😂
True shoes and pedals deserve a big mention👍🏾
Hi Luis,
Spot on about clothing, tires/wheels and nutrition. Will not leave home with a flappy jersey or without nice bibs here days.😊
3 upgrades I have on my 38 year old Reynolds 531 frame because they are so superior to old school ( and one I wish bike had )are:
1) Modern short nose saddle of proper width with cutout relieving pressure on the tender bits.
2) Big, chunky brake hoods which set me up for a nice, relaxed grip in a forearms level position.
3) Compact bar with flat top horizontal section ( also aero benefit, but comfortable)
4) Wish bike could easily be migrated to ahead set where it’s easy to set bearing preload-quill style is a pain to get just right, and does loosen a couple times per year. Replaced races about ten years ago, maybe bike needs new headset….
In addition to the introduction wireless bike computers, computers now use satellite connections to help plan rides, provide color maps, tracking, measure altitude, and even provide weather features. Additionally, an array of data can be uploaded after a ride and studied for many purposes. Bike rear and front lights now have additional safety features beyond display of modes, e.g. flashing, brightness. They now incorporate cameras that record imagery and sound in HD. Not to mention radar technology in rear lights, that warn of approaching motorized vehicles - cars and motorcycles. A particular feature I like about my Bryton 750 head unit, in addition to being touch screen, is the ability to share, in real time my location with my wife. At any point on a long solo ride way out in the countryside , she can track where I am, be notified if I have stopped and can communicate with me in real time.
Physio science and bike tech coupled with better nutrition (all adding to pure out and out power) have all definitely contributed to making things faster but at the same time there is fall off in handling skills and bike road craft. I put it down to smart trainers - can keep upping the power but not gaining any of the high speed handling skills that come with increased power output.
Thank you for sharing John. I agree wholeheartedly about smart trainers helping to make cyclist sloppy.
Really good points you make here and man it’s ridiculous how flat and wide your roads are. Helmet safety has come a way too with mips (think there is another too), radar (a must for me) and action cameras but my one is simply a balance bike. My youngest aged 2 is “cycling” her bigger sisters whilst teaching herself how to balance, it’s so cool.
My favorite liquid aide used to be espresso coffee and de-fized Coca-Cola..worked like a charm for the last 5 or so miles..
1994, Shimano 600 down tube 7 speed shifters. Best shifting ever.
Thank you Luis for the info/video. I discovered your channel yesterday and am impressed. Love the ride and talk format as well as the longer ride videos. A request: If you have not already, could you put together a series on how to move from ‘C’ ability up to eventually an ‘A’ group rider (assuming you have not covered this in detail). Should be a big viewership in that topic (?). Thank you if you have previously discussed the concepts (I’ll look through your videos). Take care and best to you!
Thank you for your kind words. I have done that type of video... I just couldn't pin point it now. It would be in one of my videos on better goup riding skills.👍🏾
I agree with most of what you identified. My lugged carbon Calfee (1996) is stiff and nowhere as responsive as my Wilier. I don’t miss (except sometimes😅) 19mm tires. I do really appreciate modern Ergo shifters (introduced in the 90’s because you no longer need to sit down to shift.
Thanks for sharing your experience 👍🏾
I got a Calfee dragonfly a couple of years ago. I quit riding the stiff hard bikes after I turned 70. Really like my Calfee. Also have a Ti, it rides nicely as well
Luis, amazing mic, what brand? You continue to grow this channel. Great job!
I'm interested as well.
I only have a 2012 titanium frame and 3 modern titanium frames of today. I think the 2012 titanium that's rim brakes is definitely stiffer and more responsive due to how geometry and the increase in tire sizes affected titanium bikes today.
One thing I will say, be careful about comparing titanium frames to each other because the build standards of titanium is different for each maker/brand. I've ridden 5 different titanium frames with 4 different brands and they all ride different.
Titanium of today definitely isn't as stiff as the older frames because everyone wants bigger tire clearance and a softer ride. Unless you can request bigger diameter chain stays with massive down tube...most will be a little more flexy.
Nice insights. Thanks for sharing
I think you missed indoor cycling programs have really aided and pushed peoples fitness like Zwift. Climbs are at your fingertips. I might have missed it somewhere but didn't see it mentioned.
Thanks for mentioning that👍🏾
Great history info Luis.. do you find that the winspace make a lot of noise when braking ? I’ve never liked the noise of carbon rim braking I had bora ultras with campy pads and didn’t like riding them due to the awful noise went back to my shamals and custom built aluminium wheels .. 😊 Pete 🚴🏻👍
Thanks for the video, I always enjoy them. I have an older set of Elite rim brake carbon wheels and I find their braking is a bit lacking compared to a pair of hand built carbon wheels I have... it isn't an issue for normal road riding in my opinion. I have recently become a renewed fan of race bikes from 2010-2017ish and even was able to afford Campy Super Record on a practically unused 2012 R5. I think you are bang on about fitness/nutrition... I think it has much more to do with athlete performance improvements rather than the new bikes. It's more satisfying to buy new bikes then to sink that money into a nutritionist or trainer (and more marketing power from the bike companies). Love the Karoo 2... I don't miss the old Cateye computers 😉
Thanks for sharing your insights. Mid 2010 was a good era
Great video bro.
Thank you Rohan👍🏾
your opinion using campagnolo?
Could you share how you filmed this

Mounting and editing video👍🏾
Flat Florida and 20 MPH. No hills, I would find boring. Give me hilly Connecticut all day, everyday. Here you get a true reflection of fitness.
I live in a hilly area in NE PA. When I rode the jersey shore, it was 33 miles with elevation change of like 115 feet…. After that I LOVE hills!
Your “c” group is averaging 20?
Yep. Not really a C group, it's just done to distinguish from the A and B
Flat land, remember. I'm from that area.
Any idea of the average watts for the whole ride Luis ?
@etherealdreams7936 I don't really know. I wasn't riding with ower. I would be guessing about 100.
@@thegoodwheel No worries Luis, always enjoy your video's from London 🙏
Disc brakes on road bikes are over rated.
