Easter Eggs

- I talk about some hidden things in my games that either people don't know about or that have some special meaning to me.
p.s. my original Wildstar monk class was called the Stalker, and Wildstar shipped with a Stalker class, but it was very different than the one I designed.
Thing I reference in this video:
My Brother's D&D Miniatures: • My Brother's D&D Minia...
Chocolate I Have Known: chocolateihave...
I am fairly certain, that the seventeenth white chocolate bar in your office was completely fictional and aimed at driving you mad.
Definitely wasn't a 17th. It's to perfect. 😂
The 17th bar was the friends we made along the way
100% correct. I use that trick in TTRPGs all the time. Name hostile NPCs "Ruffian A, Ruffian B, Ruffian C, Ruffian E" and watch your players lose their minds looking for Ruffian D.
Unless there actually are 17 bars and they were hoping that Tim would assume the 17th bar is a lie... 😳
the guy changed his mind, came back the next week and ate one.
Good job saying "thanks windows" right after the alert so I didn't freak out lol.
Tim, there were only ever 16 bars. That's the real prank.
I LOVE the 17th Bar easter egg. Thats so funny and clever.
You want to work at a place where people are not as boring as to immediately identify you as the culprit if you ever were to set up a quest with 17 bars of chocolate.
Willy Wonka is always hiring.
Okay, the "bis sucks" thing is genuinely hilarious.
As a programmer you should know it can only be 16 or 32 bars. The 17th chocolate bar is a lie.
Chocolate prank reminded me of a joke I've heard as a kid from one of Russian comedians.
Two kids somehow brought three pigs to school, labelled them 1, 2 and 4 and released them in corridor.
Police locked school for three days trying to find pig №3.
😅
2:30 This portrait is used for the halfling npc "Tollo Underhill" who can be found in the Pits of Dernholm.
"Hey everyone. It's me, Windows"
*update sound*
“Well, that’s a pretty controversial take Windows, but I’m all for freedom of speech so I allow it”
Hay, when windows makes sounds in a video I go on edge.
I relay need to change the default sounds so I dont think my computer is having a special moment all the time.
My computer doesn't speak to me when not asked or there really is an emergency. She's a good girl.
Isn't that Tollo Underhill, the guy you find in the Dernholm pits?
You might be right. I wasn’t quite sure where the portrait was used.
Yes
I see im late.
"people online love to talk about games as if the people involved with them are gone"
Well... to be fair, i don't think it would occur to most people that you could contact the devs, haha. Not all of them are easily reached out to, especially Japanese devs! I wish i just could ask Professor F about the design of super ghouls and ghosts...
Regarding the (clickbait?) video, it really does seem common nowadays to present your own understanding of something as the absolute truth lol.
One thing with click bait ones is that there will be either willful or accidental errors waiting for pendants to comment with corrections. This of course winds up gamifying youtube so they get recommended again
Best course of action is to never respond to anything you don't like in an algorithmic setting
Thank you Tim for recommending bis. The song "The End Starts Today" is a banger and I will be listening to it from now on!
I cant help but wonder if there were only ever 16 bars, and the 17th is a lie, to make you keep looking for it when theres nothing there, although that is a very cruel prank if so 😂
100%
Thought the same thing, but if there were, it might have been lost, like taped to the bottom of the trash bin (because we know you think they're garbage), or in some documents someone else was given.
I was taught by my father that you always want to get your information "right from the person that wrote it". Usually concerning books. It also works with games. So thank you for all this truth! Fun and amazing information.
maybe that person gas lighted you so hard in believing there was a 17th bar.....
So cool, but you missed one! The Fallout 1 installer (falloutw.exe?) icon is Tim Cain's head.
that's an easter egg for when the icon is displayed larger than 32x32, which wasn't standard at the time
Oh gosh Tim, that 17th bar thing, along with your white chocolate yummies, is the nicest bit of raillery I think I've ever heard
Easter eggs a whole week before Easter?
I really did enjoy the 17th bar story, such a cool inside joke
I really hope that the white chocolate bars where just 16, and the note stated 17 just to mess with you xD
I know a lot of people love Fallout, and I do too, but I have to seriously thank you, and the rest of the development crew, for Arcanum. It has remained in my top 5 since I first played it in 2001. Absolutely fantastic game, and a world I wish we could return to with a new story some day.
There were only 16 bars because he started counting from 0.
Thank you for putting that p.s. in the description about the Stalker. I worked at Carbine for 6 years and did a whole lot of the audio for the Stalker and I honestly thought I was losing my mind a little bit when you said Wildstar didn't ship with Stalker!
I have a chocolate recommendation for you. You might have to order it from overseas. It's from a Finnish company called Fazer.
Their regular chocolate is the Fazer blue. But the one i'm recommending i called Fazer Marianne, which is chocolate mixed with small crushed pieces of a very mild mint flavored hard candy.
Personally I think it's delicious.
2:22 - That's Tollo Underhill, one of possible companions ( tho he's VERY easy to miss )
Thanks. I was thinking that I have never seen this portrait before. Maybe because I've never tried a hobbit run.
Wasn't he a halfling serial killer or something?
@@yurisonovab3892Yes, he's imprisoned in Pits in Dernholm.
Tim, thank you for bringing 'bis' into my life.
Re: Arcanum portrait. I can only kind of see it when you mention it like this, I can definitely see your nose there. But I can see it otherwise being kind of hard to pin it as you, completely certain.
Why is black Isle catching so much shade in the 2000's ? Is there some inter studio drama I'm not aware of?
Sir, sorry for the question which not fits with current video. You told about arcanum remake, your thoughts, but you don't say about you intentions, have you some ideas or maybe you try to do something right now with arcanum remake? Please, Give us all at least small hope)
that 17th bar easter egg is sick! great content as always Tim! cheers!
Someone should upload a Tim Cain "thanks windows" compilation lol
6:09 You know you can mute your speakers, right? 😉
The 17th chocolate bar story is priceless. Trolling you with choco bars is something I'd do XD
Easter Eggs feel like a relic of a different era these days, honestly they're something I want to see be more common again, it was always nice going off of the path and being rewarded with a little acknowledgement or surprise for it. I think it was part of what molded how I play games as thoroughly as I do today.
Good lord man. Your chocolate blog is currently 233 pages long! VERY impressive load of yum! But as shocking as it is, I found a local (to me anyway) chocolate store not in your list that's been a family favorite since the 80's. Wish I could send you some. Place is called Sweet Tooth Candies in Newport KY. If you're ever in the Cincy area, I highly suggest hitting them up and giving it a try. Much love and thanks for making games you wanted to make that so many of us could resonate with 💖.
I found out recently that if you delete your shortcut in the disc version of Fallout and then create it directly from the directory there's a picture of a certain young game developer in place of the iconic Fallout Boy. 😊
Tim, what are your thoughts on open-source software? Is it something you think is important in general, and is it something you might want to see in game development, why or why not? Have you yourself ever created or contributed to an open-source library, and would you ever consider making an open-source game?
To be clear, I'm aware there are legal concerns for both in-house and 3rd-party software, I'm mainly talking ideally or prospectively.
Love Outer worlds
Actually Tim, if you wouldnt mind, I would love for you to do such a video (04:50) about people who are on a power trip, crave more power but are ignorant or even defiant of the responsibilities that come with the position.
And if you could focus on how to deal with those people - call them out on this, even better :)
Pretty sure now there will be quite a few videos "Ancient Games Mysteries Solved"....
What do you think about DLCs? Are there any issues to get them into a game? I think new updates would be better than DLCs. Just like: "Look! The game you were playing has now a new room/city. Go explore it!" The game Warframe is like this :)
That white chocolate easter egg is actually really funny lol
Arcanum portraits are exceptional masterpieces! Not to mention the overall art style of the game. As well as in Fallout. Years fly, however, their graphics style is eternal, it doesn’t look outdated as in many 3-D games.
Is it possible to hope to listen to a video about Arcanum art one day? Maybe an interview with one of the artists? One more chat with Leonard?
There never was a 17th bar.
The cake is a lie!
Speaking of Easter Tim would you be willing to talk about why you chose to study comparative mythology?
Was just thinking about that portrait the other day. That follower is part of a very specific quest line I honestly never did, so I can understand why it's more obscure than the rest.
Always a hoot, Tim. Appreciate it.
Trap and environmental deaths could lead to your soul being a roaming spirit looking to be put to rest. No idea how to fix the whole thing with players killing themselves intentionally to get more powerful.
I would of liked a bit more about easter eggs in games in general. More so about how the feedback is and how to place them in the level and what kind of easter eggs should be placed in the game like is it story driven is it just random assets or is it something else that adds to the game and if easter eggs in general gives a game a better feel for the player then not having it in the game.
Man, dude, I LOVE Pillars monk. Best monk class ever for me.
So, would it be fair to say that with great power, comes great...responsibility?
The Ptsd everyone collectively gets from the windows notification is so funny
Hi Tim, i have been wondering how you might decide what style of music you want to use in a game and when to use it; i have also been wondering if music can help get players more immersed into a game and how you might go about doing that.
Many companies are staffed with people who force a culture of "over-indexing on buy-in, and under-indexing on accountability." Everyone wants to give their opinion and believes they are a key stakeholder that should have buy-in on x,y,z, but will not associate themselves with accountability or responsibility of x,y,z.
for many of those cases they do take responsibility for the thing, but only for positive ramifications, as soon as the result is viewed negatively they don't speak up.
and we do want "buy-in" and some kind of ownership given from say the artist to the assets otherwise the amount of effort may not be very high.
the big problem with referential things (like Easter-Eggs, or what people refer to as Easter-Eggs) is that they are in jokes, and sometimes they need to be explained.
for the purpose of responsibility: we ask the people working on the project to "take ownership" of it, but then we don't credit them for the specific thing, we "just" put their name in the attribution list. for some individuals say they were contracted they made like 3 art assets it didn't work out and they left, but we paid them for their work and we used the assets, we can list those 3 things next to their name, but then the lead artist did 80 assets that is a long list.
this is also sometimes an issue with writing, where the writing team might have 5 people, one of which is a notable person, so everyone claims that like all the jokes are theirs almost erasing the other 4 people from the project.
Geez Tim, maybe the reason people seem to report on easter eggs as if the people who put them into the games are dead is because they aren't familiar with any of the developers personally and the developers don't field random emails from strangers.
That chocolate bar prank is so clever, I love that! Especially the 17th bar thing.
White chocolate is such a nasty excretion, I don't blame you for your dislike.
I know some channels that tries to reach out to the devs, but sometimes devs doesn't want to answer, doesn't remember, or doesn't know about that specific easter egg etc.
Isn't the recipe in the fallout manual technically an easter egg or did you mean in game easter eggs as you were kinda behind that recipe getting in there.
White chocolate is great.
Tim Cain the Game director that not only we want but a game director we need in the year of our Lord 2024.
I think the 17th bar was the best part of the prank! I bet they only hid 16! 😂
People today often confuse responsibility and guilt.
Loved Pillars but the Monk idea was really bad 😅
Well now I gotta play Arcanum (my first time) as you.
Is it really a video by Tim if he doesn't thank Windows at least once?
This was a fun one. If I ever run across unique chocolate, can we send them to you?
your portrait was used for Tollo Underhill a halfling folower
hey, does anybody know - is yes man robot in new vegas a moon is a harsh mistress reference?
I just encountered Vincent Visionmaker and his party in Temple the other day and catching the reference right away made me so happy
I recognized Vincent immediately lol but I had no idea Zaxis was also an easter egg I honestly thought he had some quest connected to him
I would support bis, but I heard that they suck.
I am late to this but what about the Old Blind Master in Arcanum? An unmarked location at the top of the map with OBM having a weird decapitation throwing device and a unique sound. Would be great to know the story behind that
An artist was a fan of the 1976 movie Master Of The Flying Guillotine.
There were definitely only 16 bars and the note lied to you.
Tim hates white chocolate. Vibe check passed
We're not even going to mention the boom easter egg in Fallout?
I always wandered what was the story with Zaxsi's sister Ima. Where there any plans for a quest in game or was it just another part of the easter egg
If I had made a sequel to Temple, I probably would have put Ima in there.
This is a week too early to make a video on this topic!
Your portrait was evil Hobbit thief Tollo Underhill, one could rescue from the prison.
I believe Leonard Boyarsky was rather Perriman Smythe (almost Virgil though)
Hej, first of all thanks for all the insights your giving. Its very interesting to hear as a software developer. I wonder whats your opinion on game sizes. Call of duty being around 200gb and the new starwars battlefront game being 64gb in size. Are they even trying to reduce the size or is this out of scope?
As a consumer I find myself not buying or installing such big games because of the download and disk space required.
Windows strikes again!
These are awesome Easter eggs.
Literally just left the 17th bar on my replay of TOW!!! Curious, which would you rather live in; Fallout or Halcyon?
Apology accepted captain Tim.
On the directors commentary for Beavis and Butthead do America Mike Judge mentioned his strong dislike for 'Easter Eggs', one of the animators put there name on a car's license plate. I think it's when there on the bus?
I play PoE2 for like 1000 hours and just noticed that it was your pic being used as one of the bartender in Pirate Island (Dunnage)
For whatever reason, I had your portrait as launcher icon for Fallout 2 copy I had.
that's an easter egg for when the icon is displayed larger than 32x32, which wasn't standard at the time
Isle of despair you look for the BLack mountain clan. The only dwarf there is from the wheel clan though (Thorvald Two Stones). And when you tell him the black mountain clan is missing and you have been to there mines you can get him to mark the wheel clan for you so you can look there if they know what happened (as the lone dwarf who refused to be banished Gudmund ore bender made the pillar of truth where he cut the words i spit on the judgement of the wheel clan etc)
I can get people missing the Arcanum portrait for the simple reason that most every public image of you involves a healthy beard. Human brains tends to conflate things like glasses and beards into its "line map" that it draws for facial recognition, so it is not your imagination when you have a brief shock at seeing a person who normally always has a beard and/or glasses suddenly not have one or the other of those things. Your brain literally made the glasses/beard part of its facial recognition.
That story about the 17 white chocolate bars is great. I remember that bar from The Outer Worlds because I thought to myself, that's random! Did not occur to me that it was an inside joke!
hey Tim
right click volume icon on taskbar > Open volume mixer > mute system sounds 😉
Bar 17 is inside the same phone :)
I was watching this video while playing The Outer Worlds and literally walking near the 17th Bar lol
Little known easter egg: Every Arcanum video Tim posts grants 1 fate point upon watching.
Tim your portrait is Tollo Underhill, which the name itself I believe is a reference to Lord of the Rings.
After starting to watch your channel, I was grinning like an idiot when I recognized your portrait used for some random bartender in Pillars of Eternity 2
Haha what a coincidence that the Bis band can be confused as an acronym to Black Ilse Studios. The confusion is real!
Isn’t that the portrait for the character Tollo Undehill?, a maniac hobbit that is imprisoned in the game. Mind you I only play with the unnoficial patch and that mod changes some portraits.
I brought up that Isle of Despair one on GameFAQs around the time when the game came out. People there thought I was making it up.
The moment I heard what the ransom note said I went “Oh, I hope they only hid 16, that would be a good prank” :)
White chocolate isn't.
And now we wait for all the gaming websites to publish articles about your easter eggs.
