So important that you talked about the survivorship bias in looking only at successful people. Self-taught / self-made is so often romanticized and the tough realities are rarely mentioned. Nice to see you showing both sides of the coin.
Yeah.. I think it's very important to know the good, bad as well the ugly sides of things before jumping in
Honestly, I will go for self-learning on any given day because these colleges are literally a scam. I went to an engineering college for 4 years as a computer student but learned nothing. Now I'm learning design by myself and I'm proud of myself.

so detailed and insightful.
im currently in second year of bcom hons in finance but i had realised in lockdown period that finance and accounting wasnt my cup of tea (long story why im still in bcom hons but yeah lets not talk about that) . not that im not good at them (im a straight A and a nerdy student tbh) but i just knew i couldnt spend all my life amidst numbers and boring routine stuff. creativity is always what i have craved, but often we are told to follow conventional pathways (easier to tread since a whole other lot of human species have done so, it is supposed to make you feel safe and secure to your path to a supposed success). but ykw, i just knew i wasnt built for it. im not the kind to follow conventional things. not the kind to do things just because others feel those are "easier", "better" and "safer".
now that i have no option to go for design undergrad education, im gonna go for a masters after this. im already doing google ux design course and so far it has been really helpful. ive already made one project (tho it needs lots and lots of refinement and revisions) so yeah, im on the right path i know. this video cleared so many things for me.
thankyou!
It reminds me of my art school how I was taught simpler things everytime but I wanted to create something detailed more refine and this phase went for 7 years of my art school since I was very very young…. Soon after joining my design college I was asked to sketch portraits, nature, buildings and many more things… It was finally this time I had complete freedom and just when I began to draw those things, I learnt and felt, I became a very detailed sketch maker. Everything for me was so smooth and I enjoyed the process also the aesthetics the minimalism is now helping me in my ui ux carrier ❤️
Hey sapta, I am happy that this video is unbiased content. You have mentioned design school finance also which crucial part. In Indian design degree programme costs around 10 laks plus for fees and digital equipments. I think you will agree to this point.
Love the fact that you (through your brother) have neatly put up college experience in the right way for folks to take it with the right mindset and having to not plainly dismiss it.
Ha ha.. Thank you, Shriya 🙂 I wanted everyone to hear it from the mouth of the horse. Hence I had to bring someone who has seen the design school side of things 🙂
Watching a marathon of these amazing videos! Great content !
One positive of going to design school is you get to work on lots and lots of group projects! And a lot more field study is possible when you work in groups! We had conducted habitat studies on canteens and school classrooms to operation theatres and labour rooms. I guess a good college name is the only thing that prompted the general public to let us in and conduct these studies!
Amazing insight, kudos to both Sapta and Sargam!
I actually got confidence after watching this video 🤣
I'm from Srishti.
I can assure you that the only concrete advantage a Design School offer can be framed into two things - 1. The "brand" value and, 2. Creative thinking. Everything else like Skills, Portfolio, Networking, etc. Can be managed without a design education.
can you give me your instagram id please i wanna get in touch with you to know about srishti
Can you tell me how your entrance exam was? I wanted to join
@@beyondthell7093 it went well. Just have a strong story to tell. Why you want to become a designer, what brings you to Srishti, etc.
@@TheSoundofTanay what about the exam, I could not find any past papers or anything and i also wanted to ask if they provide placements,. Thank you for replying tanay :)
@@beyondthell7093 I am not sure if they do placements, because that wasn't the norm during my time of graduation (2020). But ever since, they have merged with Manipal University so that might have changed the rules.
As for the papers - you don't really have a set pattern as far as I remember. It's basic questions around logic (how you solve problems) and some GK material which you can anyway read around.
I suggest checking out their website to see how they advice you to prepare for the exams.

Surely learning from a design school is always gonna make a differece than self learning, quite the same way as explained by Mr. Sargam. But after all it is upto you that how much you understand the learnings from a design school and make benefits for your career out of it! Here goes my like for this video!

Exactly what I felt about this topic. The college was IIT Bombay for Sargam, on which he expressed his views, this again is a case of survivorship bias. Not most colleges provide that sort of value. Learning is a learners responsibility. (Good) Design schools only provide a structure. Great video overall! Content is eloquent.
Please make a video on B2B vs B2C UX of enterprise level.

I have been through both architecture and design school and currently working as interaction designer in Industry. The overall difference that I feel between the two methodology which in a way has been my criticism for the both is that institutions puts too much effort on novelty while industry gives way more emphasis on buisness ends. While design schools permits one to think beyond boundaries of conventions, the industry gives a more disciplined-critical-framework to explore the skills.
The problem which I feel happens in this transaction is that students with often very novel innovative solutions fails to register a developable product in institutes and the professionals very often goes down in the monotony of industry dryness and formality.
This somewhere leaves both the system half fulfilled
A good example of systems where marriage of these two opposite fuctionings were strong was in Bahaus and probably the early days of NID and IDC where the idea was to take a creative overtake over old functions of institutions by blending creative ability, innovation and culture with real life product development with a clarity of vision.
I see that vision lacking both in institutes as well as industry where they both have become habituated with old way of workings.
Fresh Institutes like ISRO and alike institutions too have showed their potential in innovating over real-life projects with cutting edge performances.
Anyway coming back to my main point point, I see in the glamour of UX we have somehow romanticized it either as humanitarian art study in institutes or as a shining new career option in Industry.
Somewhere we need to look back again at the core of design pedagogy and understand the potential it holds in giving a new direction to the civilization.
Any suggestions of good design schools or programs at universities in California?

I'm confused between web development vs ui/ux designer. In ui/ux designing it's beneficial to learn coding, not necessary. and langauage need css, javascript.
so which is better? Learn html css javascript and more and become a front end developer? Or become a ui/ux designer?

I am in degree college and after pursuing the program I explored and realised my interest towards UX and finally came to an end decision of learning UX I am in 2nd year but not in design school so is it right to master UX by self learning or to pursue master's degree in design..?
Thank you so much, it was an amazing video. It cleared many of my doubts.
I have one doubt about doing masters. How important is to get the masters degree ? Should I opt for it or work direct with companies, startups and continue my learning from there?
I think working with companies, the good ones, will give you a lot of learning and experience which is very valuable. Masters can be an option only when you feel your fundamentals are not right. Working in companies can also set your fundamentals.
I just completed my class 12 ... I am thinking to do UX ... Should I wait for an year as UCEED for IIT and NID exams are on February or i should do something else ?

Also could you make a video putting together some credible sources where self learners could pick up stuff from!!
Also can you please expound more on the people from varied backgrounds in M.Des. courses statement, please🤗
Hi Anjali, glad you liked the video! In my opinion, the variety in a Masters classroom comes from two factors -- the fact that there's no age restriction for admission, and that your Bachelors can be in a non-design field. For example, some of my seniors finished their B.Tech. and joined my department for an M.Des., and today they are quite the awesome designers! I think it's really fun when people in a group have different levels of experience, and when they bring in their expertise from their own backgrounds and share it with everyone :)
@@SargamPrakash thanks for the info :)

Can you bring a video on course curriculum of B.des in 4 years at IDC iit Bombay by SARGAM
Many want know about what exactly happen in 4 years
Hey Krishna, that sounds like a great idea! But I’m a little hesitant to speak about IDC because its B. Des. program is still at an early stage and it evolves every year based on feedback. So my experiences might be very different from what an incoming student will actually face. My statements could potentially mislead someone, which would be terrible. Nonetheless, could be an interesting topic to explore some day :)
Do B.des students also get similar opportunities in other than academic than b.tech students in campus
Visual sensibility
Does anybody know good colleges for masters in design where the entrance exams marks are the only criteria for admission
Hi Manish!
To get into a Masters program at IDC, you’ll need to crack the CEED entrance test along with an interview/portfolio evaluation. There’s a cool podcast hosted by IDC students that speaks about the M.Des. admission process. You can check it out - m.soundcloud.com/thestyrofoampodcast
I’m afraid I don’t know much about other colleges, but a lot of them also have an interview stage that you have to clear. You’ll have to check their respective websites for the details.

Ah.. I see. Well, this whole channel is about self learning 🙂
Being in a design school will change you as a person and how you think in a 180 degree way. Its like training the brain to think tangentially and in multiple perspectives. There isn't any replacement for being in a design school. But due to financial and personal problems most people end up in learning on the job. In such cases it's vital to find mentors initially. :)

I am thinking to redesign a resturant website including a case study for my medium Article.
So, my question is that
We should need to ask the permission from the restaurant owner for redesigning it's new concept?
If we will mention their website name, is it legal to do so?
Or if not
Is any other way to redesign that website without taking its name?
Your answer will be valuable for me❤️
You do not need to take any permission as long as you are using it for a case study. It's fine.

Is there any govt college about ux?
Yes.. All the IITs that offer design courses are govt colleges.
As a computer science student who is looking out for Masters in HCI abroad do you think that the degree itself is valuable when it comes to getting into MNCs or is it literally useless ?
It isn't useless. But you need to know that a masters degree in countries like US is going to cost a bomb. Make sure that you are prepared for it. If your eventual aim is to move abroad, then this will be a good option. The student visa will also let you work for 3 years.

The video was indeed insightful weighing in the pros and cons of the whole design scenario among students and aspirants....
Although it seems I feel like I'm still in doubt,
As I will complete my engineering in the coming may 2021, and I'm confused to as where should I do my masters from?
In my recent internship, one of my mentors at BookMyShow (now at Walmart) said to concentrate and do masters which constitutes cognitive psychology and subject like that (since I said I'm mainly focusing to prepare myself for UX Research/Design profiles) said I'll be having a subject named HMI (Human Machine Interaction) in my 8th sem for which I said I'm excited about ...
then a second interaction with one of my cousins who dropped out of NID while doing masters voluntarily, highly recommended doing Masters from abroad rather here to get more exposure to industry-standard stuff while I had called him for consulting for my future studies plans...
10K☻

I’d always choose a self-taught against a design school candidate. For many reasons, a few could be, self-taught are more accommodating, with right attitude, adapting to critique and experience.
You are just broadly projecting here that this is the case.
About finance iitb design school cost 35-40 lakh per year but othe rdesign college costs as less then 10k
Hi Kunal, I’m not sure if there’s a typo in your numbers or if your sources are inaccurate, but I think you’ve highly overestimated the figures.
@@SargamPrakash I think What I say was for another college for iitb its around 10 lakh total

Your figures are not correct. Both IIT and NID have similar fee structure, and yeah the max fee for Indian dschool can go upto 15-20lakhs but not for the government ones.
Designers without a degree in design are not real designers.
😂
IDC is one of the stupid design school possible. Especially these new b.des babies. You are not taught the tools because all these old professors have no clue what these softwares are. Just go and try finding out what these professors designed when they were young. Most of them were rejected from the industry and that's y they are the design professors there. Probably you could have gotten an nid guy. They still have much better design learning.
Hi Piyush, unfortunately I disagree with a couple of your points.
Firstly, there's a lot of evidence regarding the accomplishments of IDC profs, and it's really unfair to disregard them. I, myself, was pleasantly surprised to learn that many of the products that I had seen in my childhood were designed by my profs!
Secondly, I don't think that a design college should be teaching you tools, unless it's a very niche one. It's very easy to learn tools over the internet, but it's quite difficult to learn design thinking. College time is valuable, and I think it should be better utilised on the challenging bits. However, this is only my subjective opinion, and you could present a fair opposing point as well.
But I do agree with your last point! NID has produced brilliant designers, and continues to do so! I would definitely love to hear more about their experiences on this platform or any other :)
