    You are so cute and a great video!!! I believe the algae covered the plant roots so it wasn't able to absorb the nutrients. In the end it died. Maybe try to cover the bucket with some aluminium foil or black plastic to prevent algae growth.

    1. Fruiting plants need full sun
    2. Block sun light going into reservoir to prevent algae
    3. Top up the kratky system will drown the air roots, drowning the roots will make the plant sick, sick plant will easily attacked by pathogens (root rot)
    4. Chiller is a must (for hot climate)

    Plants don’t have nervous systems like we do, also the blue buckets from Loews are more opaque and should keep more light out than the Home Depot ones, also was hard to tell if you were but it might be good to keep an air pocket of a few inches between the net pot bottom and the water (I know when I grow peppers my roots are a lot healthier when I do that)

    I know every other comment is sophisticated but next time you start seeds within a bag such as how you did for this method, drain the excess water because it isnt needed that's why you bag it maintain humidity, it was alot of water and was pretty close to the led which caused the algae so fast. I just soak my cubes then move them to where and water as they dry.

    • @AceChoppedIt
      @AceChoppedIt 3 роки тому

      Oh and the "true leave" always turn yellow eventually because they aren't important they just help the leaf production to start, reason why the first set of true leaves aren't true they all look the same on every plant. The second node of true leaves is the TRUE TRUE leaves, u can tell because those leaves define what type of plant it is.

    I think your nutrient solution was too strong. The mix for each gallon of water starts out at 1/4 teaspoon and later moves up to 1 teaspoon per gallon and you can go higher if your plant is not performing as it should. The mixing chart is on the label of those nutrients you were using. The algae loved all that extra nutrient. (too much) You can move your grow lights higher. They don't have to be right on top of the plant once it's beyond the sprout phase. You may need to change the water more than once a week. I would have the second bucket ready with a new batch of nutrient solution then transfer the plant to the second bucket and clean the first bucket so it is ready for the next nutrient change. If you are going to grow pumpkin vines you should train the vine constantly. Don't wait until it gets brittle and is easily broken. Why don't you try growing arugula which you can make a healthful salad from and if you don't trim off all the leaves the plant will make more leaves and you can have more salads. Other plants to try are ( spinach, leaf lettuce, basil, etc. ) They all grow much faster than pumpkins. Best of luck!!!

    • @radnatalie
      @radnatalie  4 роки тому

      interesting -- my maxigro powder package just has 1-2 tsps written on it, no chart. I've definitely been a bit aggressive with nutrients recently. do you think my plant leaves were yellowing because of the excess nutrient? or was it just like vitamins where I had more nutrients than necessary and the only benefactor was algae.
      I was under the impression that extra sunlight only helps plants -- is this wrong? that's why I've been keeping the lights so close to the plants.
      what do you mean when you say train the vine -- are you training the shape of it? (as in where and how it's twisting about)
      I definitely need to start on some simple greens. the flowers keep pulling me in, but I think a faster simpler grow would be good for me.

    • @CriticoolHit
      @CriticoolHit 4 роки тому

      @@radnatalie Your leaves were yellowing as a result of the algae forming over your roots and causing them to rot. Nutrient burn would have been secondary to this and taken longer to present (if at all before its demise heh). You should get some foil tape or a few cans of black plasti-dip and cover that bucket so no light can get through. Light + nutrient = algae = dead plant. I use the 3 part GH myself and do everything at 50% what is on the bottle. When plants are young / saplings I will use 25% of the recommended amount. Keep an eye on PH as plants consume nutrients the PH of the water will change and you can experience nutrient lock out.
      Here is a handy link to some common DWC "what is my plant doing" questions in regards to PH/EC i.imgur.com/oVw4rEG.jpg.
      Good luck.

    • @bobweglin9644
      @bobweglin9644 4 роки тому

      @@radnatalie I have never used the powder but I have used the 3 liquid nutrients and the labels on the bottles do have little charts that tell you how many teaspoons of each nutrient to put in each gallon of water you are using. I think the yellowing could have been due to excess nutrient in the water. The excess nutrient made the algae or moss or whatever it was grow like crazy and having the grow light so close may have contributed to that problem as well. You can train a vine on a trellis by loosely tying the vine to the trellis each time it grows 6 inches.

    Green is alge growing. Some hydrogen peroxide in the water would help but black bucket and a bucket net pot lide would be better. Also up the strength of the nutrients as the plant gets bigger or you will stunt the plant. I got frustrated and threw money at the problems. Most are light in the bucket and not changing the solution out enough strength being to weak. Lettece works better kratky style by the time problems show up your ideally done growing.

      thank you for commenting! I'll keep this in mind for my next grow. I've been avoiding lettuce just because I've killed so many saplings and I don't really like the way it tastes 😔 but I've had success with arugula before so I'm excited to try out other leafy greens

    So I think your main problem is not using the air stone. Since pumpkins have such a long growing season they need their nutrient solution topped up and without an air stone you flood the air roots that are there to supply oxygen to the plant, which causes root rot. With an air stone there is enough oxygen dissolved in the nutrient solution for the plant. This does not mean you cannot do pumpkins with the kratky method, but when you are refilling the bucket with new nutrient solution make sure that you do not fill it up completely. Fill up only 1/2 of the bucket or max 2/3 of the bucket. This will keep enough roots in the air and enough oxygen will be available for your pumpkin. The down side of this is that you will need to refill nutrient solution more often. That is why Kratky method is recommended for quick growing leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach... With these plants you fill up the bucket with nutrient solution and leave it until the plant is grown and ready for harvest. The plant uses the water and nutrients so the top part of the roots grows in the air and the bottom part grows down into the nutrient solution and the plant is ready for harvest before the nutrient solution runs out.
    Like other commenters have said, make sure you either paint the bucket with black spray or wrap it in aluminum foil. That will prevent the light entering the bucket and will eliminate algae growth that compete with your plant for oxygen and nutrients.
    I am using the same nutrients as you and it says to use:
    First Roots: 0.3grams/liter
    First True Leaves: 0.7grams/liter
    Growing: 1.2grams/liter
    And then you need to start adding Maxi Bloom as well when the plant starts to flower as the plant needs different nutrient ratios when flowering.
    Preflowering: 0.8g/l (maxigrow) + 0.8g/l (maxibloom)
    Flowering: 1.8g/l (maxibloom)
    And then continue to use maxibloom till the end of the plant or switch to General Hydroponics Ripen solution (5ml/liter) until your pumpkins ripen.
    As far as the yellow leafs are concerned there might be a couple of reasons for that. It might be that you were using too strong of a nutrient solution or it could be the lack of magnesium. Maxigrow has all the micronutrients your plant need except magnesium. I would suggest to buy Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate - MgSO4) to add to your nutrient solution and that should resolve the issue with yellow leafs.
    Hopefully this helps you out with your new project. :D

    • @radnatalie
      @radnatalie  4 роки тому

      tysm for commenting! this is really helpful. I was not aware that there was no magnesium in maxigrow -- I'll definitely look into getting some epsom salts, as well as everything else you suggest!

    • @htzrb145
      @htzrb145 4 роки тому

      @@radnatalie I think I am wrong. I checked the maxigrow label again and there is magnesium in there. So in that case the yellowing might be from roots not being healthy.
      Definitely paint the bucket and don't fill it up completely when refilling nutrient solution.
      Sorry for the wrong tip on magnesium.
      Good luck with your next project. 😊
