@@davidcokeley2918 I absolutely LOVED Land of the Dead. I know people hated it and maybe it wasn't "done well" and all the narratives are way too obvious.. but. I love it so much. It was the first "Living Dead" film I ever got to see in theaters. I mean, I saw Dawn of the Dead(2004) in theaters, too. But I meant a George Romero "Living Dead" film.
I bought this from a charity shop for £2...and i felt like i got robbed after watching it. Just plain awful. For me personally the Dead series ended with Day Of The Dead, the second trilogy has no right existing in George Romero's Zombie universe.
I actually kinda like Survival of the Dead. This was actually George's first and last Zombie movie in which he was the Director, Writer and Executive Producer. I enjoyed this movie because it felt like George was actually just having fun in making this movie and it kinda shows. Plus, the "shit" reception that this movie got enabled him to just relax and enjoy his retirement years and not be pressured into making another Zombie movie.
I saw an interview with George once where he said he loved CG blood effects because of the time and trouble it saved having to clean blood splatter off of the walls and people when they would have to re-shoot a scene because of mistakes during filming.
This was released in select theaters in the U.S. Hubby took me to see it in Philadelphia. It wasn't a great end to our 1st anniversary. We made the best of it. Went to the Mutter museum and the Starwars exhibit at the Franklin Institute.
I must admit I did love seeing a zombie ride a horse back when this came out (as forgettable as the rest of film is, that part always stuck with me). Thanks for an amazing Halloween season of Dead series reviews!!!
Note that the man played Captain Rhodes, was on Dawn Of The Dead (1978.) He was one of the cops, where the helicopter was at the beginning of the movie. I have seen Survival Of The Dead, a few years ago. I tend to agree this was not, George's best film work. I also prefer George's older movies, that being the 1st 3 dead movies.
I definitely knew about it. I was blindly following any new "of the dead" film development since the first Land BTS photos appeared online. I saw both Land and Diary in the theater and picked Survival on Blu Ray on release day. But Land is the only one of still revisit. It was a let down as well in many ways but the budget helped with the grander scope and better effects. lol
I vaguely remember watching most of these movies you've reviewed and enjoying the bad ones. Vaguely because I was flat out drunk when I watched them. Being drunk is self explanatory.
@@maxxdahl6062 Even if he didn’t I heard he had a blast making this film. Survival of the Dead is the type of film he made for himself but I also enjoyed it.
@@aydenvavra2153 You're probably one of the five who do. lol. the first three of his zombie movies were amazing, land was passable, but nothing great. The last two were utter trash sadly IMO anyway.
Nah, worst CGI head shot I'm aware of was in recent Zombieland 2 - even if its main focus is comedy, having zombie heads disappear like sub-PS2 graphics isn't acceptable.
People got to give Survival a pass it was a low budget so there’s sympathy to be shown. Zombieland 2 is not gonna have excuses it was a studio film and the fact that they allowed crappy cgi in that film still blows my mind.

I was on Amazon buying a copy of Day of the Dead 1985 and this was in related items column. Until then I had no idea this was made. I ordered it. Was disappointed.
I had only seen parts of this film on TV and skipped over it before this review but I bought and watched it all after this review and I think George knew he couldn't make a classic like his original trilogy but wanted to make something more humorous than the quite bleak Land and the Generic and bad Diary and he does achieve that even if it isn't a very good film, there's bit's where I just laugh out of sheer confusion as to why it was in there, The Asian Fisherman, Why?, The Shed Grenade, Why?, The Zombie looking at the Dynamite just passed to him before going Boom, Why?, Zombie Riding a Horse better than Frankie Dettori, Why? and I think it all just makes you laugh because there's no other way to compute the feeling you've got and it just becomes instinctual to laugh, like Rickels laughing while knowing he was gonna die to the Zombies in Day. It's this weird, unnecessary but oddly entertaining (in the same way most bad movies can be entertaining in the right circumstances) piece of film making and George left us not with a bang, not with a whisper but with a bit of a chuckle
P.s I will say George was getting up there in age, I could imagine, him using a whole different crews and smaller budget, I'm sure he did the best he could with what he had! 😅
How many years were between the original films of the trilogy? Ten, seven? The latter three were made in the span of four years. Rushed. Like Star Wars in a way.
I liked survival of the dead. Mainly because it's supposed to be george Romero's vision for the zombie genre as his original concept. Since night living dead debacle about copy rights and public domain. He never got the money or the backing he needed in order to prosper in corporate mainstream film making. So whenever he got an opportunity he had to placate the producers and film investors.
Honestly I'll put this movie as #5 on top of Dawn Of The Dead (1978) Maybe because I'm not an old school and my first zombie movie was Dawn Of The Dead Remake (2002)
I said this on the last review. George-Syndrome. Somebody called George does something amazing ages ago, so amazing that we all still love them now... but they insist of going on and making a new trilogy... Who's next? lol
When I was a teen in the 80's, I watched and re-watched the original Dead trilogy so many times I've lost count. This one? I *think* twice: Once because, hey, it's Romero, and the second time after I bought the blu-ray of it ("cuz, hey, it was needed in the collection). That's it. Other than that, it's such a painfully forgettable movie I try not to think about the fact it's Romero's final Dead, because that thought rather saddens me. Here's something funny I just realized about this one, though: Each one of his movies had some social commentary: Night was questioning creating an army of killers for Vietnam only to release them into society, Dawn was about rampant consumerism, Day was about giving the military/industrial complex reign of the country, and so on. This one, however, was a throwback to feuding, which more or less died out in the 19th century . . . . . .Or did it? Considering many people are worried the USA is on the verge of a civil war right now, it may make this one his most prescient movie.
Time gnaws at the mind as well as the body. As you get older, your vision blurs both literally and creatively. Lucas, Spielberg, Romero... Maybe not Kubrick though.
I've watched this many times over the years and feel it includes a few nuggets, hete and there, such as the realization that zombies retain some memory and can definitely learn new tricks, such as eating animals. That said, this was executed so poorly, that it's hard to not get distracted.
I was so disappointed when I first watched Survival of the Dead .. but since then I revisit the original Trilogy and the latter trilogy I only really watch Survival and Land .. diary is the one I never really watch, I’ve got far more appreciation for survival now than what I did originally 😂 I feel like Survival is George trying to do a Shaun of the Dead kind of movie probably why I try to headcanon it in with Shaun 😂
