I cant get enough of this concerto . Tge 1st theme and its reprise in development at 4:43! I adore this music. There r 2 ? pf concerti(havent fallen in love with either yet; good individual styles are like languages). The symphonies also great no favorites yet. Roger Sessions grabbed me immediately.14:56 is finale!

Big Piston fan but I haven't heard this before. Thanks for sharing.
When I won the school maths prize in 1971 (in Nottingham, England), I chose to spend my book token on Piston's 'Orchestration'; the school library had a copy and it fascinated me. Never became a composer or even learned to read music properly, but still treasure it. In later years I bought cds of his symphonies and now the interweb gives me the chance to explore his work further and perhaps buy more recordings. This might well be one of them.

Walter Piston taught a lot of famous composers music theory. The violin really stands out among all the horn and wind instruments.

There are some many marvelous themes and it fits together perfectly, the orchestration is amazing.

I completely agree with the description. I really respect this guy for not feeling the need to go all-dissonant or all-serial like many of his contemporaries. As with many modernist composers, he is neglected. You guys should also check out his second Violin Concerto.

I like a lot of dissonant and even serial stuff, but I also love it when people find new things to say in the tonal tradition. As Mao said, let a thousand flowers bloom, and a hundred schools of thought contend (pity he couldn't put that into practice of course).

I had the pleasure of hearing Miranda Cuckson play this wonderful piece at Carnegie Hall with Leon Botstein conducting the Amercian Symphony Orchestra in 2011. See www.newmusicbox.org/articles/reappraising-walter-piston/

I remember seeing that article a few months ago when searching for info on Piston. I'm happy to hear his music is getting some respect in the concert hall again. Hopefully, there will be more in the years to come. Thanks for commenting!
