- Walter Piston's five String Quartets are a singular accomplishment of 20th century music. All are entrancing balances of form and expression. They often provided an outlet for Piston to be his most dissonant and contrapuntal, but also his most beautifully still and contemplative in the slow movements.

Oh, so, so beautiful. Love all movements and moments. Rhythmically and harmonically fascinating work not without its fair-share of lyrical episodes.
These quartets were my introduction to Walter Piston and I adore them… But having the music to read along with just adds a whole other dimension to the music! Thank you for this upload 🙏

Piston absolutely knew what he did. That's perfect counterpoint in a very sophisticated musical language full of colors and differentiation, energetic, rhythmic, pushing forward, but also contemplative, sensitive, melancholy... It seems to be very consequent and unique in its own approach to tonality.
Featuring a lyrical, winding, supple, gentle discourse found in no one else's music, Carter? Bartok? No. Sono colori di primavera !
