His three violin concertos, viola concerto, and cello concerto (two not with that title) are all wonderful, not to mention the five string quartets. Not sure this mode of composition has been wiped out; you may have to look harder for it at present, including beyond the USA.
So enjoyable the interplay between cello and viola. A master of Counterpoint. I saw this live at Lincoln Center in 1979. A thrill in person.
