I think my favorite scene from this episode was Annabeth and Grover splashing water on Percy in a desperate attempt to heal him and how bizarre it looks out of context to onlookers. XD
Those onlookers did some great onlooking too! I love when the extras get praise too, was great to hear on The Newest Olympian podcast Mike spotlighting that extra with a phone.
It’s also funny to me as someone who lives in St Louis and has been to the arch because you can actually swim in that water and it’s not restricted or anything lol
In the book, I remember Percy being scared of drowning and the Nereid telling him to breathe, and he even mentions how its kind of difficult for him to want to breathe underwater and he kinda has to force himself to do it. A very good book accurate moment IMO!
@theanimeunderworld8338 Lionesses can have manes like male lions. It's rare but it has happened in captivity and in the wild. You can find videos on UA-cam about these maned lionesses and it's pretty interesting if you're into big cats.
I also like that Poseidon had to used a turret of water to catch Percy and drop him down into the Mississippi River as the arch doesn’t overlook the river in real life and Rick said he didn’t know that and would go back and fix that mistake
Also explains how it's his father who saved him, not just the fact Percy is his kid. Posidon is the reason he can breathe underwater, but it's by proxy. Grabbing him outta the sky with water? Yeh thats him.
Something I can't believe they haven't done yet is that they haven’t explained that the monsters regenerate and sometimes it takes a long time and sometimes it doesn't. Seeing Ms. Dodds again was actually the perfect chance because Percy had recently killed her, he should have been curious about how she was back.
just went back and watched the scene just to be sure. He doesn't explain it there. He just says, "nothing will stop them, not even death." Far too vague to be an explanation.@@roguevirgo902
@@roguevirgo902I think the person means a BETTER way to build the world when it comes to the show(at leats that’s what I hope they mean). Live-action shows unlike books/comics is something that usually fully utilises all it’s medium such as sound and visual, for them to talk about how monsters regenerate in a rushed way makes it seem somewhat unimportant as it is said quickly e.g Imagine if Dumbledore were to explain Harry’s importance in a quick manner. Using the commenters way of showing the scene would not only bring the viewers attention immediately through shock of a ‘dead character’ reviving but also make the viewers especially if they have not seen the show ask more questions about the world and become more interested. This is what is dome in a lot of visual media such as comics/films/manga and especially anime.
What I love about Echidna is how the actress reminded me a lot of Poppy from Kingsmen 2. The same kind of patronizing motherly figure with a warm smile and cold murder behind her eyes. She could be teaching kindergardeners how to read right after she washed blood off her hands.
The actress has that appearance. To use a snake metaphor- Ger eyes & voice let her slither in like a harmless garden snake, but that hides the copperhead underneath.
Honestly I think everyone agrees that this show should run at least an hour an episode! For all mankind is a great example of long episodes they even had a 90 minute episode in one of their seasons!
I would actually prefer much shorter episodes, and 1 episode per chapter, 22 total, 20 mins each. But if they’re gonna have 8, they should have longer episodes for sure
I also think annabeth love for architecture is implied with the whole comment of 630 feet by 630 feet with no middle structural supports, it’s held up by symmetry, it’s held up by math! And it’s earthquake proof! I mean. Nobody else just be spouting out St. Louis arch facts lol
The only thing i was upset about was they missed the best joke from the series. When Percy was falling from the arch, his narration about last thoughts should be profound but his was "AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!". The first time i read that i cracked up so much i had to put it down and laugh for a good 10 minutes. They could have had Percy do that narration by him falling it slowing down he says the deep part, but then he starts yelling. It would have been hysterical.
Not to mention that, if memory serves, the snake tail biting Percy to poison him was what happened in the book. (That is to say, when the Chimera poisoned him in the book, which wasn't until they were already at the Gateway Arch.)
Exactly! They didn't meet Echidna and the Chimera in the Amtrak. They met at the elevator going to the obsevation deck. They also missed out on the funny quips between the trio especially the one involving Echidna and Australia
Echidna never said "all the monsters youve killed were my children" Percy basically said "weve dealt with monsters like you before and weve sent them all packing" and Echidna goes "monsters like me? Of course theyre like me, theyre my children." she was referring to the "monster" part as like a general word since she is the mother of monsters
We can't be sure. Frm how they set up th dialogues it's strongly implied that she was specifically referring to th monsters alrdy fought by percy in th previous eps, alecto, asterion n medusa
The funny thing about the lack of the snake tail is I'm quite sure that the Chimera actually has the snake tail in the credits animation. So the vfx team in charge of the credits included it, but the ones making the vfx for the actuall show did not...
@@samurexatlas7373 most likely referring to the fact that kronos is watching over percy’s every move throughout the show/books like the eye of sauron does in the hobbit and lord of the rings novels
@@samurexatlas7373 the entire art piece is full of references to all 5 books. the eye is in reference to book 2, which has the eye of the cyclops polyphemus on it.
Yeah, the whole time I was waiting for "isn't that a kind of anteater?" From percy. Very disappointing that they didn't include that. They took so many other iconic moments and one-liners straight out of the book, like "I am impertinent" and "you drool when you sleep," though I'm sure all the fans were going to massacre the cast and crew and writers if they didn't include "you drool when you sleep." That line did seem really awkwardly shoved in there, however. It was part of his unintelligible half-awake montage, instead of being a full line that he actually understood. Actually, most fans get this wrong about that. They believe that "you drool when you sleep" was the first thing annabeth said to percy, but actually, while she was feeding him ambrosia, she asked him some questions. She said something along the lines of, "What was stolen? What is the summer solstice deadline?" Those were her true first words. Sorry, I sort of started rambling. I am disappointed that they didn't include the line about echidna the anteater.
I love how much they've been establishing the fatal flaws the past two episodes. It's such an important thing later in the series, and it's cool to see how much more explicit it is. It's more implied in the earlier books, which is alright, and comes back with force later on
Loved the Athena plot point. It illustrates how unpredictable the gods are and how they have no regard for their children. I also took it as Athena not being amused that Annabeth starts to get along with Percy. So I personally saw it as a punishment for a daughter of Athena consorting with a son of Poseidon. It also gives Annabeth the opportunity to examine her relationship with her mother. Also I don't think Sally lost her patience, I interpreted it more as a panic attack. Hence the "breathe". Also also, wdym? MEDUSA WAS STILL A VILLAIN IN THE SHOW.
@@Arceve idk, I liked this cunning version of her better than her being just an outright, one dimensional evil monster. And I can imagine that was one reason they went for this version in the show, bc in the books Medusa was just a bit flat as a villain. It's not an either/or thing, she can be both a victim and a villain.
@@ArceveI think theres a directing issue. Medusas portrayal should've felt like she was being manipulative like trying to lure them in in different ways to kill them. Like ur not supposed to know if she's misunderstood or lying or a straight villain etc. But it ended up falling flat so despite the actor giving it her all it fell flat. And maybe some screenwriting problems.
She is a mass murderer and we spend our time with her surrounded by the corpses of her victims. I personally found her complaints to ring hollow as pathetic self-justifications of a terrible person who is wearing thin the only excuse they have to pretend 'they aren't a terrible awful monster, they are just a poor victim reacting to what was done to them and forced to be evil!'. I really don't know why Riordan tried to set her up as a sympathetic character by having Percy's mom use her as an example for how 'not all beings who look monstrous are monsters' when she is definitely totally a monster whose been killing innocent non-mythical people who have nothing to do with her curse for thousands of years.
@@mizu7662 I mean, yes you are totally right. As I commented on the previous video, I believe: Medusa was totally being manipulative! However, she was still wrongfully punished (in the version of the myth the show uses as the source). She didn't choose to end up where she did, so she's still a victim of the gods' shenanigans. Meaning it's still not just black and white. But as I said in the original comment, she is *still* a villain in the show! I like that the show is making us use our brains and discuss this. We are still talking about this 3 weeks after the episode aired. Don't you think that might have been an incentive, too?
the director of Minus One also mentioned the budget was less then $15 Million, as he joked he wished he had that much. The budget for these shows has no excuse on how mishandled it is.
@@Sirlance3000the unions. Hollywood unions are just one giant organized criminal operation and mean that literally as they were founded by the mafia. The unions get a massive cut of the production costs for Hollywood films and shows which is why whenever you see a foreign film that has a massively lower budget and yet has higher quality it feels weird. You want cheaper and better productions from Hollywood we Need to push to shut down the criminal empires pretending to help the industry.
I think the decision to have the Chimara and such show up on the train earlier was great for tension throughout the episode. But with that, they couldn’t just have the trio stop at the arch because Annabeth loves architecture. That wouldn’t make sense with a monster on their tails. So I get the decision. I think the point is to show how horrible the gods are.
@@Jess_200 Not in the books yeah, but they added it to the show and I'm relating it to something we DO see in the books and sharing a fun little thought I had. Also technically it's a fear of drowning that makes him too scared to swim but that was more words than I wanted to type and everyone's afraid of drowning
If you’ve read up through the Heroes of Olympus series, I believe he does develop a fear of drowning, because through a series of events he realizes he’s only able to breathe underWATER, and he can still drown in things that aren’t water
I'd die on that hill with you. I've always wished for an animated version with an art style similar to some deviant art fanart! A couple artists drew them _exactly_ as I pictured the characters!
One thing I will say about the runtime is that this was the last episode given out to early reviewers so they may have cut it prematurely so that reviewers didn’t get to see everything but idk
Having reviewed the show, I can confirm this statement about the early episode links. But seeing how we never got Ares and the tunnel of love in the movie, everyone is going into this side of the show blind.
I actually do like the change that they go to the Arch to escape Echidna rather than just go to it because Annabeth wants to make a stop. Because it's a good justification to go to the Arch while not ignoring the stakes after the train scene, which was a great way to build up the threat of both Echidna and the Chimera.
What i can't get over is how Annabeth thought going to the top of the arch was a good idea. Doesn't she know there's not much space? And also dosen't she know it's a dead end? If I remember correctly she knew Athena wouldn't help them at that point. So why go up instead of fighting it in the open?
Am I the only one who's been noticing that Kronos in the dream sequences is instead of being an ominous, foreboding, unknown presence in the book is now just a stereotypical hunched over shadowy figure who sounds more and more like a super villain in each episode.
Thank you! I thought I was the only one who noticed! He looks like the mummy guy from that one episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog. The one who keeps cursing the house and saying, "Return the slab, or suffer the conceqences." 😂
Riordan already makes Cronos a super villain in the book. He is way more evil there than in mythology, and the site "Fandom" even calls him "titan of evil".
I think that making it a disembodied voice can be harder for viewers to have a connection with on what is happening. Percy is neurodivergent with ADHD and dyslexia but those are reframed as battlefield reflexes and Ancient Greek language. Hearing voices can be more interpreted as a mental illness and saying prophetic dreams might not land the same way. While I don't necessarily mind the change, I can understand frustration with it.
Ok now you are just looking for stuff to complain about, cronos was a pretty generic villain In the books too, yes the way he returns is interesting but that's about it
Finally! We get Percy's Fatal Flaw! Now we got Percy Jackson! So much better of an Episode, like I said unless they really mess up it should be smooth adaptation from here.
Liked this episode the best. Acting was so much better in this episode. But yeah, young Percy talking to his mom in the pool sounded weird. "Just breathe, that's what you tell me." He sounded manipulative there not sincere. I did like Sally's impatience and frustration, "I paid for this..." meaning the swimming lessons were a big financial burden to her and he's not helping. And I was really looking forward to Percy's line, "Isn't echidna an ant eater?" Which made Echidna mad, "I hate Australia!" Which made me LOL reading the book. Did I miss this line in the episode?
You're right that that line isn't in the episode. Generally they've been staying away from making the exact same jokes as the book, unless it's something visual like the Minotaur wearing underpants, since that's maybe even better than having to imagine it. I don't know why, but for some reason I've always thought that Echidna joke was wonky. One of those cringy things that just gets stuck in my memory because it was so weird. Can't tell if that's a good thing or not.
@@roguevirgo902 Could be! Echidna was very tense. The episode still had some comedy, but I don't think it ever came up during a scene Echidna was in, so that feels very intended.
Some problems I had with the series so far: Is is just me or is Annabeth’s character feel weirdly developed so far? Like Yeah, Leah Jeffries’ acting so far has been hit or miss, but the introduction to character of Annabeth chase herself seems very different. In the books, she meets Percy by nursing him back to health, and she says her iconic “you drool when you sleep” line right before she leaves to inform cabin 11 of Percy, as instructed by Chiron. We then get to know more about her when Percy arrives at cabin 11. When we first see her, she’s reading an architecture book. When we get introduced to Luke, Percy notices she blushes, introducing Annabeth maybe having strong feelings towards him. It’s these little details that flesh out her character early. After they talk for a bit, they’re interrupted by Clarisse, and Percy is taken to the bathroom, with Annabeth following behind. This interaction between Annabeth and Clarisse shows the Ares/Athena rivalry between two characters, it sets up who’s up against who in capture the flag, and Percy’s bathroom scene is watched by Annabeth because she had a reason to be there. In the book, she “watched (Percy getting an attempted swirlie) through her fingers.” When Percy makes the pipes burst, she’s soaked too, and shocked, questioning him on how did he did it. In the show, Annabeth is kind of just… there. She says she’s been “watching to see if something like this would happen”, but I feel like that just came off as creepy rather than wisdom-like. Then, in the book, when it’s revealed that Percy is a child of a big three, everyone kneels, and Annabeth comments on how this situation IS NOT GOOD. She knows the sacred oath has now been broken by Poseidon as well. In the show she’s kind of like “ooohhh cool.” And the rushed writing immediately switches on questing time, leaving no room for explaining how outcasted Percy felt when he had to live in his own cabin, and how the other kids started to treat him differently. We also don’t get ANY training scenes with Luke. I can see cutting out the disarming scene, since there already is a bunch of clues already to who Percy’s dad is, and him getting powerful from the water bottle wasn’t completely necessary. Although, having no training scenes at all doesn’t set up Luke as “the best swordsman in camp” as we know him to be, and doesn’t at all train Percy in the art of swiordfighting. Like, this boy has to fight ARES in the last episode. Sure, the water will make him powerful, but if he just suddenly learns to block and parry the literal GOD OF WAR’s attacks, it’s gonna feel a little Gary Stu-ish (Gary Stu is the male counterpart of a Mary sue).
I went back and rewatch this series again today and I have to say that this is the best episode so far. I'm really hoping that the series gets better, because it is one of my favorite book series, I mean it's up there with Harry Potter as my favorite book series
As a blind viewer, I do have to point out that Thalia’s Name was pronounced a couple different ways in the Percy Jackson audiobook series, and in the heroes of Olympus. It kind of changed book by book. Both pronunciations are technically correct. Certain characters also emphasize the hard a sound more than others. I do not know if that was an intentional decision by Rick or the other readers but it’s there.
I do agree that the episode ended waaaaay too soon and this series would have done good with an AMC runtime of 45 min - 1 hr per episode. It felt like it ended in the 2nd act and I wanted it to end with the introduction of Ares at the diner. That would have been a much better cool down scene after the climax.
As a long time Percy fan, I believe that the characters are massively underutilized in terms of drive. It just doesn't feel like they have the type of motivation that they had in the books. For example Annabeths drive to get on a quest to prove herself is missing, doubled with her love of architecture. Grover is missing the fact that he wants his searchers license so he has to complete this quest to get it and Percy wants to save his mother from the underworld. We cannot connect to these characters because the fundamental reasons for them to even do this is just missing, even just from a storytelling perspective, let alone the adaptation perspective from a book that already did these things better. Really sad tbh but I have been watching with my mum and she seems to enjoy so it's a win in my book.
Yes, very true. I feel like someone is trying to cut out all the "unnecessary" stuff to keep it tight, but the thing is... it wasn't unnecessary. It makes the characters comprehensible. They're also missing the tone. Where is the sense of humor in these? It's one of the best things about the books.
Huh? This episode Annabeth geeked over the arch, as well as Grover mentioned how he’s always wanted to follow Uncle Ferdinand’s footsteps and get a license someday…
@@TheIndianDeityno they didn’t XD the architecture was not brought up at all, not even in Athena’s “shrine” and ferdinand was brought up true but it wasn’t explained that Grover wanted to follow and look for pan. It was just talked about.
@@babs3241very true, humor is important to Percy’s character but I did think he got a little better this episode. I kinda blame the first 2 episodes for not setting up any likeable characters, I even felt sally and gabe were so off. We are supposed to hate gabe so badly, that we want sally to kill him at the end of the book, I just can’t see it.
I actually started rereading the book in order to be able to more accurately compare the story to the show, and coincidentally I was at this chapter when I watched the episode, so it couldn't have been more fresh in my mind. This episode was definitely an improvement. The bickering on the train at the beginning actually got a full laugh out of me, which I wasn't expecting. Some of the dialogue is stilted, and I'm still waiting for the chemistry of the group to come together, but I felt like we're going in the right direction. Maybe they just weren't given enough time to meld before filming started, and they felt each other out on the fly, because now, in the promo stuff, they're acting like best friends, which set my expectations too high.
The train conversation with Echidna was a little long, I didnt think it merited so much time. I also want to think that Athena let them in more so as a collective agreement of punishment from the gods (aka Zeus is pissed-it would fit the book where Echidna straight up says he sent her), but the immediately jump to conclusion that it's Athena being embarrassed really took away from the scene, for me at least.
I don't get Disney's fascination for these random 30 minute episodes for all the series they've produced thus far. The consistency leaves a lot to be desired! Just started listening to the audiobook of the Lightning Thief and it blows my mind that the series flew through 8 chapters to reach the 2nd episode?! Overall it's been a good series so far but it seriously needs to breathe more. I kinda hope there's deleted scenes on the cutting room floor but we're likely not going to see them as Disney reportedly won't be doing physical media anymore. Those runtimes are so frustrating!
If they do all five books and Echidna doesn´t appear again in this season maybe she could in the fifth season come back and fight in the battle of Manhattan? I mean the Minotaur came back too. I would like to see something like that
You are literally saying almost word for word what I was thinking and saying during this episode! -him being scared of water -liking the slower pacing (although I think EVERYONE likes that lmaoo) -THE SCENE WHERE HE FIGHTS THE CHIMERA (I literally quoted Hook ‘Oh there you are, Percy!’ Although I will say my mind really wanted to call the chimera a manticore because I could not remember the name of it for the life of me!
i agree that the runtime is painfully short. when it ended i thought i had sat on my remote or something but nope. also im sorry to hear you got harassed about medusa xd
'They gave the chimera a barbed tail instead of a snake's head! That's the manticore-- that's a completely different monster!' Now you know how I feel whenever I see an adaptation of Wizard of Oz where they give the Glinda's name to the Good Witch of the North-- those are two entirely separate characters! Then again, I'm sure you've known that feeling for a long time!
It’s not even the manticore tail from Greek mythology it’s supposed to be a scorpion tail it’s closer to the manticore in Persian mythology weird decision on the writers.
I love that the message from his father was to breathe, just like his Mom yold him in the opening of the episode! I absolutely loved Echidna's dialogue. I really want a Chimera now. I loved Percy's trick switch. One moment I thought they missed was when Grover said he was hungry, I would have him try to eat his blanket.
Very glad you are feeling better about it. I was feeling conflicted because I have enjoyed it and I love the book series, and I love your stuff. Also very glad you could be so mature and admit your critique of Medusa wasn’t perfect and that there WAS an answer, you just didn’t see it, that’s awesome. Anyway, hope to see you next week!
0:56, Mythology Guy you have to remember Disney likes to credit everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, including that one intern that got coffee for a background character that one time, and they have to credit the barista as well, its not like the actual reason for the credits being so long is that they want to show the work of their underpaid animators or anything(This is a joke), also the money was going to those interns😉
One point ive seen made about the fight scenes not being longer is that the book drags them out because we also get percys internal monologue along with the action. This doesn't explain it from a budget standpoint but it explains the differences in fight time between the books and the tv show
I found it weird that Athena would get super offended about the head too. But I was thinking that Annabeth had just guessed that was the reason and maybe the real reason is her helping out the son of Poseidon and maybe she's angry that she took Percy to her temple and put him in the fountain. And maybe that will be revealed later.
I think with the chemistry being weird between our heros in the first few episodes is that they don't really know each other and now as they are getting to know each other more were going to see another more of like natural chemistry
I am glad Mythology guy liked this episode. I too liked it and I agree with everything you said about the 4th episode being too short. It was only 33 minutes long including the credits while the 3rd episode was 45 minutes long. I loved how Poseidon saved Percy and I know people are complaining about how short fights are but to be honest most of the fights in the first book were short. Honestly the longest fight would be Percy vs Ares in the books. Now if that fight is short then I would be upset
Echidna made my skin crawl. Her calm nature when I knew she was a villain made me think about Voldemort, who always had a calm, quiet voice. Ugh-huh-huh-huh-huh-huh. My spine tingled when she began talking....
20:44 I think the "You'll always be here" didn't actually happen since this is a dream sequence. Its probably something that Percy thought of because his mom was taken and its his brain trying to cope.
I do think the directing is weird. Like, I'm not getting as much Percy "I am impertinent" Jackson as I know Walker is capable of giving. Also, I just finished rereading the first book and Percy freezes a lot more when directly fighting the Chimera (and other monsters). He's not that brave yet. He runs away. And this is used to taunt him later when he has to stand and fight. And it's this moment where he finds his courage and builds up to his bold heroics. Because while Percy sacrificing himself was typical Percy, he is still new to the fighting and has to work up to being that brave. I also agree that I can't for the life of me figure out where all that budget is going.
Short Request: “Is Zeus really the angriest God in Greek?” Zeus: “I’m the angriest God in all of Greek!” Random woman: “Hey.” Zeus: “Ohhhh, I just realized that I’m actually the horniest God in all of Greek!”
i think there is a weird implication that after the gang has 'escaped' echidna, she gets a more competent child to take on the task, as she had chastised the baby for being to jumpy or whatever also one thing that easier to do in the tv format, that i actually really enjoyed, was the beginning of that chapter starts with a flashback to Percy being comforted by his mom, and they have something they said that i cant recall, it might've been 'just breathe' either way, Eudora repeats it to indicate that she is friendly/aligned with Poseidon, but then yeah it also fits together to also indicate to him that he can breathe underwater, which is something he learns there in the books too, but this also kind of has this broader aspect of Poseidon is aware of Percy and his mom's sayings (even more so given they were IN A POOL), so he hasn't been completely distant, just not present
@@luishernandezsoto Just from random places online, unfortunately I can not find a proper source but I do know the budget was _very_ high. And, in fact, the highest of any pilot at the time.
The show really has to thank the movies because all it needs to do is to be "better than the movies" to be accepted by the fandom and tbh... That's not a huge wall to climb
I think the movie is worse than the show coz of accuracy but had quality everywhere else. The show has the opposite problem. It gas accuracy in spades but despite quality actors and set but falls flat still. I think its a director thing and sometimes screenwriting. Like medusas portrayal from the actor seemed like they were trying to make her look like shes manipulative or like u dont know if she's genuine or not but it ended up feeling disconnected like different angles of personality. I think that's a director fault.
I didn’t have an issue personally anabeth figuring out who Medusa was so quickly, is because she was the smartest in the group and the monster was so closely connected to her mother. I think a similar thing happens with Arachne later on where she figures it out immediately.
I still believe they should have done an animated series. It would have been cheaper, which allows for more episodes to adapt the books more accurately. It would allow to have the character design fully accurate to the books while still casting the best people possible to bring those characters to life. There are even Percy Jackson comic books, the book series is basically made to be adapted in an animated series.
You make a damn good point 15 million is all it took to make Godzilla minus 1 and it is one of the best Godzilla movies made and guess what it came out last year on that budget that they had PER EPISODE and Godzilla minus one is a awesome looking feature length film
I just recently noticed that the Immortals cards look different now. I think they look absolutely amazing, I will miss the old designs as they had a certain charm that I liked but these ones I can undoubtedly say look fantastic. I love the more Greek stylization for the Greek cards. I cannot wait to see perhaps the new Norse styled Norse cards and the Egyptian style Egyptian cards, etc. TheMythologyGuy, you and your team are doing excellent in bringing to life a game that I have been patiently waiting for in giddy glee. Keep being awesome.
On the design of the Chimera, the answer probably was he got the manticore and chimera a little mixed up, like I get that it's a huge flaw and someone must have pointed it out, but people still make mistakes. But that's no excuse for getting the chimera wrong. I'm pretty sure there was a manticore in Percy Jackson somewhere but I'm not the Mythology Guy so I can't say much because I didn't do the research.
This episode was definitely an improvement and gives me hope for the rest of the series. And I agree that Percy finally started feeling like Percy. Besides looking cool, that sword fake out was nice because I thought he was going to actually give it to her and forget that it always comes back to him and it would be a dumb moment. But it turned out much better. I do hope we see the Nereid a bit better in the next episode though. Couldn't really see her and considering how cool the Dryad looked, I was excited to see her.
The Chimera had a snake tail, but not a SNAKE tail. The Red Black Yellow bands of two snake types. Even though it had a Cobra hood. Disney still making some odd choices but they have since Heracles.
In 'pj n th greek heroes' percy says that monsters often change appearance over time to justify th differences btw th chimera fought by bellerophon n th 1 he faced. Even the way humans perceive monsters n gods can influence their appearance, apollo says so in th 1st book of his pentalogy. So it's all canon. Btw, homer in th iliad says that th chimera has a dragon/snake tail actually, no heads involved
personally when I saw the runtime, I was just so bummed out that I basically glossed over these nice details that you just pointed out and the motivation of going to the arch again bummed me out. The only thing I liked was percy's sacrifice "Now that's some seaweed braining"
I haven’t had the chance to watch episode 4 yet but you look less disappointed in the thumbnail and I have so far been feeling like while you make good points some of them have bothered you more than they did me so I’m excited for this episode
I plunge to my death Grover: what about Percy? Annabeth: Percy would be fine ,he is Poseidon's son That's the smart Annabeth not the film one who doesn't do anything to suggest she is Athena 's daughter
I basically have the same problems with this show as you do, especially with the speed of everything and the length of each episode. What they did with echidna, having her drop hints and then anabeth figuring out who she is, you said they could have done that with medusa. What if they gave the actress long, sharp fake nails to wear to enthsize bronze talens, or when shes alone with percy, have him notice cracks on her skin but have medusa make an excuse about needing more moisturiser. The only part I know i liked about her design other than the cgi snake hair is her hat. It's way more useful than the wrap and sunglasses the movie had in terms of practicality.
I've been waiting for this episode since i watched episode 4 and it's finally here ❤❤❤ Edit: The opening scene was to set up the moment trapped under the water. I'm thinking this because in both scenes there was a just breathe line first by Sally than by percy to Sally, than the neriad saying just breathe to percy whose voice seemed to sound a bit similar to sally.
Perhaps the first few episodes were so fast-paced because they incorporated several elements from the films that many people may recognize, so they don’t think they have to focus so much time on them.
The thing about Echidna teaching the Chimera to hunt could be because the Chimera has been dead thousands of years so it could’ve forgotten how to hunt. Edit: Similar to how after a long coma, people have to go through physical therapy to help them be able to move and use their muscles again.
More likely it's a nod to th books, where echidna tells percy that zeus rarely allows her to test a hero against 1 of her brood, which is odd since, in mythology, zeus allowed echidna n her children to live after typhoon's defeat on purpose to serve as a challenge to future generations of heroes n demigods
I could see a bunch of kids splashing the other to get dirt or something sticky off. Or even like if they had a rash or a sunburn.
In the book, I remember Percy being scared of drowning and the Nereid telling him to breathe, and he even mentions how its kind of difficult for him to want to breathe underwater and he kinda has to force himself to do it. A very good book accurate moment IMO!
Echidna being a Karen mom is so perfect.
Chimera design was great
I love the blend of all animal parts in a great fusion of goat, lion and dragon
@@theanimeunderworld8338I honestly would’ve liked a mane of some sorts but it’s still cool.
@excaliburknives3572 she kind of did
Those reptile flaps acted as a mane when angry but isn't Chimera female?
@theanimeunderworld8338 Lionesses can have manes like male lions. It's rare but it has happened in captivity and in the wild. You can find videos on UA-cam about these maned lionesses and it's pretty interesting if you're into big cats.
its so fucking funny how she acted
Yeah, with how much exposition was dumped on us in the first couple episodes, it's weird that that key detail ended up going by the wayside.
Grover mentioned that actually
Grover literally explains it in episode 3 on the bus. Cmon guys let’s pay attention more before criticizing
just went back and watched the scene just to be sure.
Love me some Murderous Mother Gothel affect

Maybe they could have pulled the Emperores New Groove thing and have Percy cut into scenes and explain things, might help with the exposition dumps.
Not to mention that, if memory serves, the snake tail biting Percy to poison him was what happened in the book. (That is to say, when the Chimera poisoned him in the book, which wasn't until they were already at the Gateway Arch.)
It’s dope to see you posting comments here! Interesting analysis.

Exactly! They didn't meet Echidna and the Chimera in the Amtrak. They met at the elevator going to the obsevation deck. They also missed out on the funny quips between the trio especially the one involving Echidna and Australia
Echidna never said "all the monsters youve killed were my children"
Percy basically said "weve dealt with monsters like you before and weve sent them all packing"
and Echidna goes "monsters like me? Of course theyre like me, theyre my children."
she was referring to the "monster" part as like a general word since she is the mother of monsters
We can't be sure. Frm how they set up th dialogues it's strongly implied that she was specifically referring to th monsters alrdy fought by percy in th previous eps, alecto, asterion n medusa
The chimera is sometimes depicted with an arrow tail. Maybe that's what they were going for.
The funny thing about the lack of the snake tail is I'm quite sure that the Chimera actually has the snake tail in the credits animation.
So the vfx team in charge of the credits included it, but the ones making the vfx for the actuall show did not...
Now that is something I will never stop laughing about

That was Percy

Surely inflation isn't that bad
I love how much they've been establishing the fatal flaws the past two episodes. It's such an important thing later in the series, and it's cool to see how much more explicit it is. It's more implied in the earlier books, which is alright, and comes back with force later on
Echidna was likely talking about the monsters that Annabeth and Grover killed in the years before Percy came to camp.

Thalia's fear of heights and Percy's fear of swimming could be seen as them rejecting or not yet accepting their godly parents
But percy never had fear of swimming
@@Jess_200 Not in the books yeah, but they added it to the show and I'm relating it to something we DO see in the books and sharing a fun little thought I had. Also technically it's a fear of drowning that makes him too scared to swim but that was more words than I wanted to type and everyone's afraid of drowning
If you’ve read up through the Heroes of Olympus series, I believe he does develop a fear of drowning, because through a series of events he realizes he’s only able to breathe underWATER, and he can still drown in things that aren’t water

I actually do like the change that they go to the Arch to escape Echidna rather than just go to it because Annabeth wants to make a stop. Because it's a good justification to go to the Arch while not ignoring the stakes after the train scene, which was a great way to build up the threat of both Echidna and the Chimera.
in the books the train was delayed for a few hours so they went sight seeing. they didn’t just stop the quest for sight seeing

I mean the guy ate all his kids because he feared one of them would overthrow him. That's already a supervillain origin story.
Ok now you are just looking for stuff to complain about, cronos was a pretty generic villain In the books too, yes the way he returns is interesting but that's about it
I saw the notification and shouted out loudly: "OH BOYYY" 😂
Finally! We get Percy's Fatal Flaw! Now we got Percy Jackson! So much better of an Episode, like I said unless they really mess up it should be smooth adaptation from here.
Its still to obvious at this point. When reading the books, and you learn about Percy's fatal flaw, it has a sense of surprise but understandability.

Some problems I had with the series so far:
Is is just me or is Annabeth’s character feel weirdly developed so far?
This episode definitely imporeved but i was so mad the episode was so short. And the cgi was fine. Better than marvel lol
This is definitely my favourite episode so far
Don’t apologize to anyone! I agree with your Medusa take
I do agree that the episode ended waaaaay too soon and this series would have done good with an AMC runtime of 45 min - 1 hr per episode.

@@babs3241very true, humor is important to Percy’s character but I did think he got a little better this episode. I like to see that we share the same opinion on a lot of things
I like to think that Echidna treats all monsters as her adoptive children, hence the line.
i really hated how fast they are moving and how they are skipping parts that help character development, like in the medusa episode they just rush it
The train conversation with Echidna was a little long, I didnt think it merited so much time.
-him being scared of water
-liking the slower pacing (although I think EVERYONE likes that lmaoo)
-THE SCENE WHERE HE FIGHTS THE CHIMERA (I literally quoted Hook ‘Oh there you are, Percy!’
Although I will say my mind really wanted to call the chimera a manticore because I could not remember the name of it for the life of me!
i agree that the runtime is painfully short. when it ended i thought i had sat on my remote or something but nope. also im sorry to hear you got harassed about medusa xd
My problem with the manticore sting was that Percy gets a manticore sting later in Titan's Curse, so... are they just going to do it all over again?
Eh, Percy gets poisoned a lot throughout the books anyway. Even the Chimera's snake-head tail got a bite in during the fight at the Gateway Arch.
Chimera was amazing as a design
I love the blend of the dragon, goat and lion in one being without weird out of place additions like the extra heads
'They gave the chimera a barbed tail instead of a snake's head! That's the manticore-- that's a completely different monster!'
Now you know how I feel whenever I see an adaptation of Wizard of Oz where they give the Glinda's name to the Good Witch of the North-- those are two entirely separate characters!
I wish they made the episodes longer, especially episode 4
Something that I liked about the part when Percy pretends to give his sword to Annebeth is that it starts to show what is hubris is.
This doesn't explain it from a budget standpoint but it explains the differences in fight time between the books and the tv show
I do genuinely enjoy this show as an abridged version of the books. I do hope they take the criticism to heart and make the episodes longer.
we just need you as the director so that we can guarantee it being great. love the vids friend
I'm so glad this series is actually good been waiting for this
I like the Chimeras design a lot. My problem isn’t really just the tail. It’s that it only took like four steps forward and that’s pretty much it.😅
Does skibbidi toilet ever appear in Greek mythology?
Short Request: “Is Zeus really the angriest God in Greek?”
Zeus: “I’m the angriest God in all of Greek!”
Random woman: “Hey.”
Zeus: “Ohhhh, I just realized that I’m actually the horniest God in all of Greek!”
i think there is a weird implication that after the gang has 'escaped' echidna, she gets a more competent child to take on the task, as she had chastised the baby for being to jumpy or whatever
also one thing that easier to do in the tv format, that i actually really enjoyed, was the beginning of that chapter starts with a flashback to Percy being comforted by his mom, and they have something they said that i cant recall, it might've been 'just breathe' either way, Eudora repeats it to indicate that she is friendly/aligned with Poseidon, but then yeah it also fits together to also indicate to him that he can breathe underwater, which is something he learns there in the books too, but this also kind of has this broader aspect of Poseidon is aware of Percy and his mom's sayings (even more so given they were IN A POOL), so he hasn't been completely distant, just not present

Fun fact I learned just recently: the budget for LOST's pilot episode was about, say, _14 MILLION dollars._
Where did you learn this info from?
@@luishernandezsoto Just from random places online, unfortunately I can not find a proper source but I do know the budget was _very_ high. And, in fact, the highest of any pilot at the time.
The show really has to thank the movies because all it needs to do is to be "better than the movies" to be accepted by the fandom and tbh... That's not a huge wall to climb
Yeah except ep 1-3 is not better than the first movie
@@Gicosaurusworst take I’ve seen so far
@@roguevirgo902 lol did you not watch his videos in ep 1-3? He clearly explained how terrible the first 3 episodes are compare to the movie xD
@@Gicosaurusthey are so much better it ain’t even funny
YOUR IDEA IS SUCH MUCH BETTER OH MY GOODNESS
I still believe they should have done an animated series.
It would have been cheaper, which allows for more episodes to adapt the books more accurately.
It would allow to have the character design fully accurate to the books while still casting the best people possible to bring those characters to life.
There are even Percy Jackson comic books, the book series is basically made to be adapted in an animated series.
Animated series take longer to make if they are at all good, and they’re not cheaper.
So far im enjoying the show, all of my issues come from the episodes being too short, hopefully it gets renewed and they listen too feedback.
15 million dollars PER EPISODE!!! THATS GAME IF THRONES NUMBERS OF EXPENSE
I appreciate your take on the show. Because to be honest with you, I fully hate the show. And you word a lot of how I feel but in a much nicer way😂
You make a damn good point 15 million is all it took to make Godzilla minus 1 and it is one of the best Godzilla movies made and guess what it came out last year on that budget that they had PER EPISODE and Godzilla minus one is a awesome looking feature length film
Oh he said that after I finished writing this😅
This is how I feel. I appreciate this one
It did get much better this episode im not giving up on this show yet
First things first: BONDING!
Thank you.
Im ready for next episode. Ares is coming and Im excited to see Edge play him
On the design of the Chimera, the answer probably was he got the manticore and chimera a little mixed up, like I get that it's a huge flaw and someone must have pointed it out, but people still make mistakes. But that's no excuse for getting the chimera wrong. I'm pretty sure there was a manticore in Percy Jackson somewhere but I'm not the Mythology Guy so I can't say much because I didn't do the research.
The Manticore shows up at the beginning of the 3rd book
This episode was definitely an improvement and gives me hope for the rest of the series. And I agree that Percy finally started feeling like Percy. Besides looking cool, that sword fake out was nice because I thought he was going to actually give it to her and forget that it always comes back to him and it would be a dumb moment. But it turned out much better. I do hope we see the Nereid a bit better in the next episode though. Couldn't really see her and considering how cool the Dryad looked, I was excited to see her.
I need to read the first book again I remember echidna as a random old lady with a monster dog
I definitely enjoyed the talking scenes more in this episode than in the previous ones, and I did like most of the character interactions.
I'm a bit upset that they completely cut out Percy's, “Isn’t that a kind of anteater?”, one-liner to Echidna...
My assumption is that Echidna will be a return character and that they might have her take her monster form at a future point in the series.
Yeah, she literally doesn't pop back up for BOOKS
personally when I saw the runtime, I was just so bummed out that I basically glossed over these nice details that you just pointed out and the motivation of going to the arch again bummed me out. The only thing I liked was percy's sacrifice "Now that's some seaweed braining"
I loved that in the scene on the train and the music made it more suspenseful
I haven’t had the chance to watch episode 4 yet but you look less disappointed in the thumbnail and I have so far been feeling like while you make good points some of them have bothered you more than they did me so I’m excited for this episode
The opening line made my day
I plunge to my death
Grover: what about Percy?
Annabeth: Percy would be fine ,he is Poseidon's son
That's the smart Annabeth not the film one who doesn't do anything to suggest she is Athena 's daughter
I've been waiting for this episode since i watched episode 4 and it's finally here ❤❤❤
Edit: The opening scene was to set up the moment trapped under the water.
@@Gradestar10Could also somehow be some sort of child/relative to the original Chimera (hence not having a mane) and still be learning how to hunt.
