  • In an attempt to get a deeper booming sound out of a floor tom without turning down the lugs, what if we changed the resonant heads?

Todd, boy it’s so good to have you back. I have been thinking about you and how you were doing, especially since you haven’t been around for a bit.
You addressed something that has always bugged me a bit, and that is reviewing a drumset and talking about the wonderful sounds coming from those drums. Someone buys the same set and then is disappointed because it doesn’t sound anything like the one they saw on tv, and it’s the exact same kit. Well the reviewer didn’t mention that there were a few electronic gizzmos and gadgets that enhanced the sounds. I think there should be disclaimers telling the viewers that the sounds they are hearing aren’t the raw sounds they will hear from an unhooked up acoustic set.
Anyway, this was a fun video you did,and I am so glad that you are back on the thrown again. Take care,my friend.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️

Hmm, I never thought to put a 2 ply head on the reso side.. it sounds different for sure though. I actually use the Hydraulic heads on my toms for batter side like normal, but I've got a couple extras.. I may have to try this out having 2 Hydraulic (batter and reso side) on a floor tom and see what happens.. Good video Todd!

I ran clear heads on my Tama kit. Dual ply on top, single bottom. I couldn't get the separations in tones I wanted between the 12, 13 & 14. I ended up trying a coated 2 ply on the 13, and that worked. My OCD drove me crazy with the mix of heads though 😂. So I ended up using all the heads you like, Super 2s. It sounded great that way. Warmed up that basswood tone a little.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that Basswood is terrible. I think just the opposite. One brand new drum set I have always wanted is a little jazz kit made by D drum. All its shells are basswood also. I just got different opinions than anybody else I like the muddy sound, but you don’t have all the excessive resonance and overtones with let’s say birch

Put napkins or thin towels between the snares and the heads to stop the snares on the wall behind u from vibrating.

usually I tape them down when I'm not using them but I've been lazy as of late

And honestly, the only way looser heads will wear out quicker, is if your 20, and playing for hours a day. Its all about technique too. If your just slamming violenty making big dings, than sure..but for as little as you or i are playing, it really isnt gunna matter that much. It took me 2 years when j was gigging, to have the whole coating of the center of a snare eat away.itnwas a remo head, and took so much beating. And i didnt have it cranked. So even if a 12' head wears out in a year, vs 2 years, it isnt that huge of a thing. My heads have been on for like 8 months, and theyre just starting to break in nicely. Mileage always varys though(stick, technique, how many hits, frequency of use etc)

Hi Bro, Nope not true. Tuning down a head does not ware down the head faster that is what they are made for all different kind of tentions . Actually removing heads and placing them on other drums, over and over again will actually compromise the integrity of the head even more, because you will stretch the hell out of the head, I have listened too you do this a few times. When you place new heads on your set tune them up and enjoy, leave those heads alone. If you want "Thuddy" you will have to D Tune. Just myopinion from a guy who has played for 40 years. May I suggest a thicker 2 ply head like Evens Chrome, or Aquarian Reflectors on the top, and always Evens G1 Clear on the bottom. I am the total opposite from you I believe you get what you pay for with drum gear. I am a DW guy all the way. I only buy American. Try out those thicker 2 ply heads on top, and ditch the dial, it is having you tune to high, will never thud that way. I know what you are looking for I know how to get you there. Cheers!!!!

Given the amount of experience you have, I will not argue any point you’ve made. My source of the information regarding detuning that will possibly damage The heads sooner came from two sources that I found pretty reputable, but how much of that also was opinion on their side? What you say makes complete sense though. Thank you for the comment.

I dont think heads wear out honestly. It takes alot of dents for them to be truly dead. John densmore of the doors still has his original head from the factory on his floor tom, and he used it for years and years and it always sounded fine to me. Sure new heads have a vibrance, but they last much longer, and really....it comes down to telling drummer and guitarists that heads and strings die suoer fast, so you buy more. Nobody blinks an eye at reso heads, until recently. Bit even beatdown brown atests, that changing reso heads does nothing to the tone, and i tend to agree, as once i ordered all new reso heads, and i was hoping for some great tonal imorovement but i got litetally nothing.I have coateds on my kit now, and soon will put the clears on that i bought recently, and when i change them.back to coated in several months, theyll sound the exact same

I got that information from sounds like a drum and RdavidR. From an engineering standpoint, it all makes sense to me. When the heads are taught, they are rigid and strong, and each strike of the stick will carry through the whole head. If loose, it’s more isolated mainly to the area of the stick impact.

Still watching, but just wanted to mention this. When I saw Steve Smith play, I noticed he had Remo Control Sound I think they are called. Clear heads with the big black dot. He used these on top AND bottom. That's a guy who knows a thing or two, so I have been considering trying it out. He plays a beautiful Sonor kit that if I had to guess, they are thick Maple shells. But that's a guess due to what he played earlier with Journey. He might be playing thinner shells for jazz, not sure.

Those heads on top and bottom eh? I have one of those black heads on one of my snares, but I’ve never tried them on Tom’s. Now that I think of it, one of my bass drums also has a controlled sound head I believe

@@CheapDrumsGuy most guys who like a thuddy sound use a thicker 2 ply head. Evanschrome, aquarian reflectors, evans onix, evans hydrolic are great. Remember the top head is your tone, the bottom head is your pitch. i use evans e c2 on top evans g1 clear on the bottom. I like my toms to sing. I have a ten peice DW mahogony/maple custom set. I use Sabian PParagon cymbols and a 21” inch Zelgion mega bell ride. DW 9000 series bouble bass pedal I just tuned them up today, and they sound amazing. Remember drum heads strech d tun does not hurt them.

@@JamesONeil-lb1uu i’ve tried four different style of heads for the APK they were all dual ply and none of them sound very good especially the hydraulics on the batter. The Aquarians were the only ones that had good tone and cut down a lot of the extra noise. Those heads, I will keep on the batter, but I thought by changing the resonant it might work in conjunction a little better, which it did to a point I’m quite pleased with the sound but this week I will go back to single ply because I am getting an Emad for it

@@CheapDrumsGuy emad heads are the best. I don’t know if you. Know this but be careful when you order your head, because the make a 16 inchfor bass drums and a 16 inch for floor toms my buddy made this f up. Also I have a DW acrlic 5 piece with black paiste cymbols for sale. It is f’n awesome you could buy it for your b day. Lol drum on Bro. Cheers
