I just checked on Rock Auto, because they have an easy to use website, and a new Motorcraft master cylinder is $110. A new Motorcraft power brake booster is $215, and a Cardone rebuilt one is $175. Pretty low prices for such a new car. That's one thing about having a popular car, parts tend to be cheap.
Brake fluid stops working after 5yrs or 60K, sticking seals and components. Mechanics usually don't change fluid when doing a brake job. Change all of the brake fluid....could be that easy.
@@sp-yj5wr used to work at a shop, we always recommend a brake flush every time they replace their brakes and rotors. Very convenient yet the vehicle handles better
I also have a 2015 Ford Mustang V6 with the exact same problem. I haven't fixed it because it usually works fine, but if I sit idling at a dead stop in traffic it gets a little dicy. Feels like the brake booster for sure! Once I get moving and it builds a little air pressure it works fine again. Will replace the booster one of these days, or trade the car in. 100,000 miles with no other problems, and I love the V6.
@@dos1763 It depends on how hygroscopic the brake fluid is. Water contamination can make brake fluid useless because it can boil under heavy use, and freeze in Winter. There's a reason brake fluid needs to be changed.
This sure brought back memories for me when I use to drive my parents 1972 Ford Galaxy. Those aluminum ABS actuators can cause that “internal leakage” as well if they are defective or broken. Nissan had a huge campaign to replace them when I worked for the dealer just a couple of years ago.
That’s where Scotty said it didn’t appear to be a leaky HCU…no codes , but that doesn’t always mean it’s not a leaky dump valve. I would suspects a leaky dump valve if someone recently had the brake system opened up and bleed the brakes to get crud into the HCU.
Really good point Scotty made in this video, is that temperature and humidity levels do affect the mechanical parts of vehicles. Here in Montreal we go from 30 to -30 celsius maximums from summer to winter. I do definitely notice that in the winter I spend more on gas and that the engine is more noisy on my car, especially within the first 20 minutes of start-up.
what a timely video.. I have a 2021 mustang and the brakes grab at low speed stops.. glad to know that I can a scan tool hooked up to see what the problem is. It grabbed from the very first day I picked it up with only five miles on it. Nice to know Ford has a way to check and see if the antilock system is off.
Scotty, I have had forty cars in my life, everything from a Sunbeam Alpine to a Jaguar and three Corvettes and four Thunderbirds. My 2016 Mustang is the best car I’ve ever had. It’s fast, comfortable, nimble and thoroughly dependable. I literally have only had to repair the AC and driver’s window under warranty. Nothing else. @@moodiblues2 I loved the 429 my 71 Tbird had and it was as far as I know the only version with rear suicide doors like that year Lincoln. I loved it. My mother had a situation after we had been out in my car, came home, had to move the cars around. My mom started her 83 Reliant, and when i looked up from my car she was across the street, up on the concrete wall, and had hit the home across the way slightly - this could have been driver error, but the mechanic also found where the brake booster had been leaking internally, and said that may have caused a runaway condition AND diminished braking - and she had a very short distance to react. I have been concerned that perhaps some of the accidents attributed to driver error on the elderly may actually be parts like this that may wear differently due to the cars no longer being driven daily, and perhaps sitting for a few days or a week at a time - had the car repaired, never had this happen again.
Same! Even when I have no idea what he’s talking about with an engine or something, it’s still entertaining because of his gesticulating and dynamic voices 😂
I’ll bet Scotty knew the problem before he got the expensive diagnostic tool came out. Even after the invention of all the computers the cars still have some basic mechanics that haven’t changed for years.
Hi, If this Mustang never had the brakes flushed, I would try that first. Sometimes fresh brakes fluid would resolves this issue and it is not an expensive service.
New fluid doesn't make a difference, but a brake system with air trapped in it will cause those symptoms and needs to be bled, which requires new fluid to top back up
That owner is a Marine, (not Army if I heard right). The Air Medal is for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievements while participating in aerial flight. That Air Medal is what I was given back in June of 1979 for my flying in Vietnam. It's pretty high on the medal totem pole.
I would replace both the master and booster. It's a nice car and should be kept in top condition. Shame on the dealership mechanic for not checking the brakes by holding the pedal when starting in the first place.
Scotty is just out here spreading knowledge and saving us all hundreds of thousands of dollars! Thank you for sharing your years of expertise with the world sir!
Scotty, One thing I don't think you mentioned before. Dealers, (I think everyone of them), do want to find a problem so they can rip you off. They tell you they can hook up their fancy diagnostic machine to find the problem. The only bad thing is that they will not hook it up until the person agrees to pay them about $150.00 to do it. They try to convince the car owner that they have to get money back for buying the expensive diagnostics machine.
Lol, It's a business. Do you think Scotty works for FREE" Yes, dealers can be more expensive. & Often it's worth it! I personally don't go to them unless I have to. Like my clutch for my 91 SR5 V6 Xtra cab 4X4. I wasn't about to do that. I don't have the facilities, the tools, or the expertise. Lol I'd bet you Scotty wouldn't touch it either! They did a Great Job. & When I brought it back a few 1000 Mike's later for adjustment, the Best in the west MR Suzuki, test drive it, & adjusted it, in about 30 seconds. I enjoy helping people where I can. But these shops need to feed they're families as well.. And so do I. That being said. Get your own scan tool, & stay away from places you can't afford. I know I do!
That’s how us tech get paid all that money doesn’t just go to the dealer and people don’t understand. We have to use our tools our knowledge to diag the car. We get paid for the jobs we do not get paid hourly or salary. Know one goes to work for free.
Why would a company and a technician spend there money time and education to fix your car for free? Get real 5k won’t buy a dealerships diag equipment. I personally own the same equipment the ford dealership owns and my annual cost is more than that and I own the equipment. The technician working on it is paid a percent of what your charged. Why should his family do without and not receive any income from his time knowledge and tools? Your so special that the technician and dealership owe you? Do you get free products and services from Walmart? Remember you don’t pay a technician for what he does, your paying for what he knows. A good technician ain’t cheap. Not having a good technician gets expensive real quick.
I had one Ford mustang and it just wasn't a good experience when it broke down. I owned a 1990 miata I've driven since 2014 and I still love it. When it brakes down no problem I'm on the road in a day or two fixing it myself. It's been down about five times. 3 Alternators , 1 electrical connector, and a battery. I know I know the mustang I had was a four banger too but even a v8 I don't think would beat the reliability and the smiles per gallon of the miata.
My 2017 F150 was recalled for a brake master cylinder leaking internally into the brake booster and they replaced the brake master cylinder for free. I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of a bad batch and gets recalled.
Interesting tidbit I found on youtube - I have a 99 Mustang six, and according to one youtube channel, you can push the trip meter (in the speedometer area) turn the key without starting the car (if I remember right) and the mileage display will show all sorts of data on the car, test the instrument panel bulbs, etc - I love this! On my old 87 Dodge Daytona, if you turned the key 5 times without starting it, the power loss light would flash a code - normally code 55 for all is well - which was 5 slow flashes, and 5 quick flashes - any other code shown could be looked up as to what it meant.
I don’t care how many turbos you put on it, nobody wants a 4 cylinder mustang. If you’re gonna pile your mustang into a crowd of onlookers you want a damn v8 🤣
Honestly I don’t care if you have a 4,6,or 8 cylinder engine they all how their ups and down but getting rid of a 6 cylinder for 4 cylinder mustang is one of the only times I don’t like a engine just doesn’t fit a mustang
My 2012 mustang done that some times and finally one of the rear calipers stuck. Shop replaced both rear calipers rotors and pads. All problems are fixed.
Only happens after you drive it awhile lol, so this guys idea is to just let it go until it quits working in the worst situation and then you have no breaks. If you have an issue you should fix it, if you wait the problem becomes worse cost you more money or you may even wreck possibly kill someone.
Nice work Scotty, you have great communication skills. I hope you and your family are enjoying their summer. I certainly am, doing a lot of bicycle riding and taking on online class
We have a 2010 MKZ doing that and could not duplicate at many service centers. I asked the last place to replace and bleed the brake fluid and that fixed it.
Scotty, Just wanted to throw this out there. I have a 2012 F150 with a 3.5l Ecoboost. It has an electric vacuum brake booster on it because the Ecoboost doesn't produce enough vacuum for the brakes to operate correctly. I was told it's due to the twin turbos. The mustang may have similar issues.
Subaru mechanics did the same thing to me, engine issues; after i went to my trusted mechanic, it was the timing chain that needed replacement at 100k miles.
I have a 2012 Lincoln MKX did the same thing. Wife had braked hard. Pedal was real mushy. Took it out replicated the braking she did. Pedal came back up. Haven’t had a problem since. There were no codes.
I had a lot of trouble with my a B new Ford Tempo (first year). Long story short a mechanic was sent from the higher ups. I went to pick up the car and he met and explained the situation. He said the car was going to be a lemon if he can’t fix it. If that were the case I could choose any sedan in the show room and take it in exchange. (He fixed it). I asked why the car was so difficult to fix. He said the difficulty is the Ford manual. No matter how well it is written it deprives the mechanics the ability to think for themselves. My car was worked on by a different mechanic every time and of course every mechanic went to the same page and got the same results. Goes without saying he did not use the manual.
The master cylinder isn't the only part that could be the problem. I had a Ford Edge that had a bad hydraulic abs control unit. The pedal would sink to the floor and it started out as an intermittent problem.
Shhhhh.... don't let the following UA-cam punks hear what you said - 'Buff Barnaby', '1717jbs', 'The Ball', 'R.W'. 'SEA BASS', 'girth brooks', and so on. They'll wet their beds... again....
I have a 2012 v6 Mustang and the Waterpump is the only replacement I had to make. My car now has 136kMiles. When did your water pump go out mine went out at approximately 70kmiles.
I have a Ford, a 2006 Focus 2.0 duratec with 127k miles, never really had any issues since I bought it for £550 in 2017 where it had around 90k miles. Just the usual tyres, just fronts, rears are still fine and I replaced the brakes all round. I did have one little problem where it kept stalling, no engine light or fault codes. I did the usual changed the spark plugs, checked the coils, cleaned the throttle body. It was still stalling and no better, something made me think.a sensor might be going bad but why no fault codes! Strange thing was it ran fine at start up and idle, only cut out after it warmed up and went for a short drive. First one I checked was unplugging the electrical connection to the EGR valve, it ran spot on, no stalling! Guess what, it threw a fault code!! I left it like that for over a year, fully intending to replace the EGR valve but apart from the engine code light it was running spot on. When I did replace it, I figured out the EGR valve would stick in the open position when activated, hence the stalling. So Fords don't always show a code when a sensor or module is going bad!
I've driven one, and they pull. Problem is, those four cylinders cannot take the beating that an 8 cylinder can take. As the old saying goes, "there's no replacement for displacement." Those 4 cylinders 10 years from now the 4 banger is going to be worn out because they have smaller parts which translates to shorter strokes, and tighter tolerances. I just don't see these engines holding up the way a V8 can. Especially with those Turbos. I'd ont care for those wonky 10 speed transmissions either. I much prefer an 6-8 speed.
My 2011 F-150 did that, dealer told me it was normal. Spoke with two more mechanics later, they said the same thing. Something to do with system relieving the pressure when it’s not needed.
Scotty, Scotty, you got to change the master cylinder. I've worked on cars professionally since 1960 and master cylinders are always going out. You don't take a chance whether it's a little leak or big leak. You replace the master cylinder with the new OEM. You can't take the liability to tell the customer to drive it's not too bad.
looks like you could see brake pressure on the scan tool while braking, most mastercylinders are divided into two different sections so you have dual system, so if one fails half the brakes still work, so you could hold the brakes while viewing the readings each section to see if the pressure is going down while holding the pedal steady, this would verify the fluid in the master cylinder is bypassing the orings inside of it,
I have the 2.3L mustang and I love it. I bought mine in cash because they’re like 10k-15k than the GTs cheaper used with the same miles. I average about 26 mpg and I still have fun in it.
@@williamnichols539 I have a 3.7 the economist is not a bad car at all if it was anything but a mustang it would be a top 10 muscle car … they don’t deserve that kinda hate
I don't trust car dealerships maintance work, 139$ to put it on the code reader, 700$ for an 30,000 check up, brakes , battery cables, any leaks, ext , cabin filter changed, oil change, just the basics, tire rotation, radiator flush, giving him cash, 175$ sure beats paying over 700$, I save every maintance copy. Yeah, having a Mustang I'd definitely want to hear that roar. Keep up the good videos Scotty, you're very appreciated , learned alot from you. Thank you, so much
IT's funny, because dealerships lose business because they try to scam people. And people do not want to be scammed so more leave, then dealerships complain that they cant find work, thus scam more people. And the cycle continues
Yeah you’re right, but if you get an upgraded shortblock for the ecoboost and do regular maintenance and have a catch can they can be very reliable too
NA V8 will have more than twice the useful life. Your probably better off modifying your own engine with strengthening and an aftermarket turbocharger and learning to do the maintenance yourself than most of the factory turbo cars from the manufacturers. The BMW turbo motors barely last 100K miles and almost all their cars have turbos now. The Ford V8 isn't as stout as the GM but the overhead cam sound is so much better than over head valvers
Hat a similar issue with my 2012 Ford Edge. Same reply from the dealership, they could not determine the fault. Could not change all the components on warranty... bleed the system... about 2 months later, after several trips there, it turned out it was the ABS system. They replaced that. It works perfectly fine since. Everyone online was pointing to the master cylinder, it was not in my case.
Oh my. A mustang 7 yrs old with over 130,000 miles needs a new master cylinder other wise runs like a top. How will Ford and all Ford owners survive this ?
Good video. I remember my parents had a his and her Ford Maverick, light green for mom and dark green for dad. And yes, stay very far away from Chinese brake parts.
I hate that Ford quit making the Mustang GT’s look better than the regular Mustangs. That would be like if Dodge offered the wide body with the hood scoop on the V6.
Personally, while I would love having a 5.0 Mustang, I think I would actually prefer the quieter I4 engines. My next-door neighbor's daughter has a 5.0 Mustang, and every time she goes somewhere, it's loud enough for us to be able to hear it in the house. P.S. I love that Scotty always shows the pope when he says, 'You can't trust anybody." 🤣
2012 Ford Edge - I replaced the brake booster with a chain store rebuild before checking the recall I missed or was never told about. It is a safety concern when the booster completely fails.
I remember on "The Golden Girls" Fords in St. Olaf were called "Fjords" One of Rose's neighbors owned a Fjord Fairlane. Maybe the Mustangs with the 3.7 didn't make the power of the turbo 2.3 they do seem to hold up better. Normally I would avoid a 3.5 or 3.7 that was front drive because of the water pump but in the rear drive cars Ford used a different water pump that was outside the engine so you didn't have to pull the whole thing to replace it.
Sorry. But, that's not correct. I have a 2016 F150, 3.5 Flexfuel. It has the internal water pump. Same thing for the Ecoboost 3.5 motors as well. Not one of Ford's better ideas.
i had a similar problem turns out the brake petal has piece of plastic that pushes the brake in and if it gets heated up it would sink that plastic piece does same thing with the clutches and can cause 3rd manual lockout its that piece of plastic called Master Cylinder Rod if your having issues check those petals
master brake cylinders can be fun. i had just come of the highway onto a main street and when i went to stop for a light, the pedal hit the metal, my brother in law had a shop so i went to his supplier and got a new master cylinder and put it on, two days later same thing, got another master cylinder again and two days later it went also, on the third trip they gave me a different brand and i had no problem after that so parts are hit an miss sometimes and a master cylinder malfunctioning is not fun, that is why my emergency brake cable was always functional and it save my butt many times in that incident.
The reason the master in this car failed is because the engine has 50% of the cylinders it should have. If a Mustang has 4 cylinders, it really doesn't need brakes at all.
Yep master cylinder I had a car that did the same thing. It took a minute to get it diagnosed. Those seals can be. tricky. Get it fixed immediately because it is very unpredictable. It can change what it is doing without warning.
@@donaldstepp4850 For sure, but basically the entire chassis, power/drivetrain are entirely different in late model V6 vs V8 (GT) Mustangs. So a motor swap wouldn't build you the same car. It'll be cheaper and easier to just start with a GT
I owned a 2016 Mustang GT. Great car. Squirrely rear end. Hoods are prone to rust along the edge. Lower control arms in the front didn't last long. Overall, I want another one.
11 minute video for a 5 minute diagnostic, man can Scotty rattle on and on, over and over saying the same thing no less than a half of a dozen times...I still enjoy him and enjoy his videos, but damn.
I had a 2017 eco-boost mustang as a rental one time. I picked it up and the gas was on E. I drove it for a while, tested acceleration, etc. then because I was curious I filled it up with 93 octane. I’ll tell you what, those eco-boost are way faster with 93 versus 87!
WRONG!...(maybe). Common problem is the hydraulic control unit and ABS seals stick with no codes. It comes from very old brake fluid. (Most mechanics do not change the brake fluid during a brake job). Brake fluid is only good for about 5yrs or 60K. Try bleeding entire brake system and give it time for new brake fluid. Problem may go away........or yeah, change the wrong parts like booster and they'll have to put new brake fluid in and problem will go away..for awhile. Love your vids Scotty!
It's disc runout Scotty. Happened to my 72 vette. No leakage, master fine. Air was pumped into my brake lines which as you know reduced pedal firmness.
I had a 2017 Mustang V-6 and traded it for a 2020 Mustang GT 5.0. The service dept at the local Ford dealer recommended that the brake fluid be swapped out every 3 years to prevent moisture in the lines on these Mustangs.
Years ago I had a 71 Cuda with heavy duty suspension and brakes but it was not power brakes. While I was waiting to use the pump at the gas station I went from having brakes to the pedal going right to the floor. Upon examination there was absolutely no leaks in the system and it turns out that the master cylinder had gone bad letting fluid by the piston but not externally. So as you said, it could be the master cylinder is bad.
Our 2016 F150 if currently in the Ford dealership undergoing a complete ms/booster that had the same issue right before the ms started dumping into the booster. It was under recall. Check the recall sheets from Ford.
My Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi had the same problem of spongy break pedal and it was sinking to the floor. One mechanic put old master cylinder but that didn't last much so I changed total assembly master cylinder with Break booster of Bosch Costing 180-200 dollars but breaks are working good since then.

Pretty low prices for such a new car. That's one thing about having a popular car, parts tend to be cheap.
American and Japanese cars always have cheap parts.
Brake fluid stops working after 5yrs or 60K, sticking seals and components. Mechanics usually don't change fluid when doing a brake job. Change all of the brake fluid....could be that easy.

Will replace the booster one of these days, or trade the car in. 100,000 miles with no other problems, and I love the V6.

Those aluminum ABS actuators can cause that “internal leakage” as well if they are defective or broken. Nissan had a huge campaign to replace them when I worked for the dealer just a couple of years ago.
IIRC Ford Edge has this exact same problem, not the booster or master cylinder.
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics has an excellent video on how to determine if it's the master cylinder or the actuators.

My mother was a terrible driver too.

Just look in the master cylinder with someone standing on the brakes , you can usually see fluid coming back into the reservoir .

One thing I don't think you mentioned before.
If you spend $5000 on a diagnostic machine, I’m sure you’d want to get every penny back for it too

Not having brakes never stopped me.🤪
I've driven one, and they pull.
The one in this video has a 6 speed.

Scotty, Scotty, you got to change the master cylinder. I've worked on cars professionally since 1960 and master cylinders are always going out. He said the dude didn't want to change the master cylinder. What do you expect him to do?
He still does sometimes
I’d still call this a diagnostic video
He just did. Proper diagnostic is the most important step of repair.
He showed how to figure out brake problems in mustangs.
looks like you could see brake pressure on the scan tool while braking, most mastercylinders are divided into two different sections so you have dual system, so if one fails half the brakes still work, so you could hold the brakes while viewing the readings each section to see if the pressure is going down while holding the pedal steady, this would verify the fluid in the master cylinder is bypassing the orings inside of it,

Maybe the Mustangs with the 3.7 didn't make the power of the turbo 2.3 they do seem to hold up better. Normally I would avoid a 3.5 or 3.7 that was front drive because of the water pump but in the rear drive cars Ford used a different water pump that was outside the engine so you didn't have to pull the whole thing to replace it.

master brake cylinders can be fun. i had just come of the highway onto a main street and when i went to stop for a light, the pedal hit the metal, my brother in law had a shop so i went to his supplier and got a new master cylinder and put it on, two days later same thing, got another master cylinder again and two days later it went also, on the

The reason the master in this car failed is because the engine has 50% of the cylinders it should have. If a Mustang has 4 cylinders, it really doesn't need brakes at all.

Scotty Kilmer which will you recommend a used F150 or Tacoma for site work?
towing f150, not towing tacoma
WRONG!...(maybe). Common problem is the hydraulic control unit and ABS seals stick with no codes. It comes from very old brake fluid. (Most mechanics do not change the brake fluid during a brake job). Brake fluid is only good for about 5yrs or 60K. Try bleeding entire brake system and give it time for new brake fluid. Problem may go away........or yeah, change the wrong parts like booster and they'll have to put new brake fluid in and problem will go away..for awhile. Love your vids Scotty!
Scotty, can you do a review on the 2022 Nissan Frontier?
yes!
@@scottykilmer And the reliable jaguar XJS 1995 I6?
It's disc runout Scotty. Happened to my 72 vette. No leakage, master fine. Air was pumped into my brake lines which as you know reduced pedal firmness.
Two things that should never be in the same sentence: 1) Mustang. 2) 4-cylinder. This, quite simply, is un-American and wrong.
I had a 2017 Mustang V-6 and traded it for a 2020 Mustang GT 5.0. The service dept at the local Ford dealer recommended that the brake fluid be swapped out every 3 years to prevent moisture in the lines on these Mustangs.
Afternoon Scotty! Ask miss kilmer not to sell the Lexus!
afternoon and I'm on it!
Dealerships and some repair shops are now charging $ 250.00, for what is called
a "Diagnostic test", even if you know why you are taking your car in.
Mustang with a four cylinder engine? What a disgrace
......minor correction....wife has a 4 cylinder...
I love the logical way in doing an analysis of Scotty! One-by-one
Our 2016 F150 if currently in the Ford dealership undergoing a complete ms/booster that had the same issue right before the ms started dumping into the booster. It was under recall. Check the recall sheets from Ford.
That’s okay.
Everyday is a sad day for Chevy owners.
