I now understand why Keith Fenner's hydraulic follower is angled to face the direction of saddle travel. It allows the stylus to cope with steep profile starts, such as the large end of your handle. I do admire the obvious effort you have put into this project, and I thank you for sharing the "downs" - very of my projects are satisfactory without revisions.
Ah, I see that you have watched this one! To be honest, I don't think my stylus would cope with a steep cuurve. Perhaps a judicious bit of hand-feeding would be what is needed.
I really liked this Video. It was the only Self-made lathe copy mechsnism for Metal I could find and it showed me that this is possible. I really like it!
LOL, at least you can pull a Microsoft, and state that the problem was with the end user, (Not selecting the correct stock) and that the Design team was not at fault... ;)
That might get the thick end turned down OK, but then the thin (left hand as viewed) too thin! Larger stock is the answer. At least it proved the concept.....

Sorry it's taken me a long time to reply - we've had visitors to entertain! Glad you liked it. I have a project in mind which might utilise it. John

It just needs a wee bit more stick out on the tool, or a wee bit less on the pattern follower, and it will work fine for the 16mm bar...
