  • Making projects with T-shirt yarn is a popular craft. This type of yarn is different from other yarns in that it is made from about one-inch-wide cotton jersey fabric. T-shirt yarn can be purchased or easily made at home from old shirts.
This is a great way to recycle and make an environmentally friendly craft. If old T-shirts are not available, a good place to look is at a thrift store. They are very inexpensive there, and many different colors can be found. Add new life to an old shirt. It is amazing how much yarn is possible from a whole t-shirt.
When working with tshirt yarn, it is often necessary to join strips of the yarn together to make one continuous piece of yarn for the crochet project.
This tutorial will show how to join those pieces without taking the time and energy to sew the fabric strips together.
Once joined, T-shirt yarn can be used for knitting and for a crochet project!

I'm a 41yo mom of 5, always wanted to learn how to crochet and thanks to UA-cam I was able to learn. I'm still very new to this and still don't know all the terms and only know how to do the basic way of crocheting, but I was thinking the other day how cool it would be to make a blanket for my bed out of tshirts...wasn't even sure if that was a thing lol. Then I found your videos on how to make tshirt yarn and I was soooo happy to see how easy it would be. I am hoping that you can help me some more though...would you happen to know how many (size?) Tshirts I would need to cover a king size bed? This is my "dream" project. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you for your interest in our videos and your kind comments! A t-shirt yarn blanket would be really cool and is a great idea! I have never tried to make a whole blanket with t-shirt yarn so I'm not sure how much you would need. It would be quite a bit of yarn though. I would suggest making a bunch of yarn (keep track of how many shirts) and then stitching a few rows. From that you should be able to guess how much more yarn and shirts you would need to make a whole blanket.

nice idea! but how do you join in this way a long strand or even a complete ball? Would not fit through the small slit. you would have to pull it through inch by inch, I think - or?!

Thanks for your comment! We also have a 2nd method of joining by sewing a few stitches which may work better for you. ua-cam.com/video/L7skSjOrjLQ/v-deo.html

@nomadhatter I think sewing is the best..joining without sewing makes a visible knot on the yarn

I agree, show us how to do it at the end of a ball.

Yes.. But what if the other end was long because u ran out of uarn and need to connect another ball of yarn

Hi Francis and thank you for your question! If you have this case, I suggest that you sew together the yarn ends with a few small stitches. See our video on this technique here: ua-cam.com/video/L7skSjOrjLQ/v-deo.html. Happy Stitching!
