I was gonna install these but before I could I forgot about doing it to my Chevy Silverado like that pickup and the back fenders was beyond repairs to getting it all covered so I went and replaced the whole pickup box and was lucky to score myself a box that came with the fender flares I'm still planning on getting the front one installed aswell
so the real reason I looked this up is because I wanted to know what people did incase their fenders were rusted out and not able to put the (pine Trees) on the top. I see now its still possible so thank you! a lot of people also don't have any vids for gmc's so this is great!
Just did this today with ~$60 OEM flares bought online (looks like same ones shown in this video). Absolutely great final appearance. The only thing I did different was use rust reformer before installing and I cut around the bottom bolts that were frozen in this video. I had a little more rust on the fender around that bolt and feared the mount would break free. Used simple wire cutters to cut the plastic mud flap, since they get scrapped anyway. My only complaint is that the fasteners were crap and the heads kept breaking. Save your original clips as I needed to reuse 4 of them. This simple modification will prob buy me two years of good looks. I love this old truck!
Is there anyway to leave the mud flaps on AND have the fender trim installed at the same time? Or do the flaps have to come off in order to have the fender trim on? I have a 2000 Silverado extended cab and I’m wanting the 1-1.5” fender trim. Thanks to everyone.
I’ve seen trucks with both but I don’t think they were using the factory mud flaps, otherwise they wouldn’t fit right due to the changed contour of the fender
I would have Por-15`d under the wheel wells as far I could reach prior to covering up the rust, POR-15 right over the rust and up underneath, then put the Flares on.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy i hear ya. No need for a resto, just cover the holes! Cant get a sticker here in massachusetts with rust like that. Every truck u see 10 yrs or older on the road has those flairs on it, my 05 silverado included!
As big of a crap hole that this state is, I'm glad we at least don't have annual inspections. It should be unlawful for them to force you to fix that crap just because of a little bit of body rust. Especially when it's the state's fault for putting down salt in the winter.
Should have used the penetrant FIRST before getting the torch out. And don't ever reinstall rusty bolts that are dry. Lubed bolts always makes the reassembly go smoother......and it shows that you care.
You seem to be under the impression that this is a new, rust-free truck 😂 The bolt did its job. I’m not too concerned with a 20 year old truck that has 250k+ miles.
@@Pacavelli Tape? For wrapping up the wires? I think I just used the heat shrink butt connectors and tucked the harness in, but you can use electrical tape.
@@Pacavelli LMAO! Sorry yes they already had the tape on them. You can order a roll of like 3/8” or 1/2” wide 3M double sided tape online though or get it at the hardware store.
Yeah but I just wanted to show the actual install of the flares. A lot of people just do the cover up like this. It really wasn’t worth doing anything in this case because the truck was rusted to the point where it will for sure come back and it’s a 18 year old truck with 240k
@@xavierolvera8122 I’m not sure what size they were exactly since they came with the flares, but these are the style clip - www.itweba.com/en/product/christmas-tree-clips-pine-tree-clip.html
I’m a body work novice and I just wanted a quick and easy solution so honestly I didn’t even think about it. The truck is getting up there on miles so by the time the rust comes around the flares, it will be time for the junkyard anyways haha.
Lol I know this, the truck is an 01 with 260k, not really worth doing a whole lot more to it. Just wanted the visual appeal of less rust for the rest of its life.
I agree, so the truck is old, why bother spending the time and money doing a half assed job, leave it or..... Sand off the rust as best you can, pressure wash it, tape it off spray with a rust inhibitor., they make a lot ( more research). Any thoughts on spray on bed protectors like Rhino for the wheel wells?
The rocker and corner panels aren’t much for the part themselves, but the labor and paint will be costly. Unfortunately I haven’t had enough body work done to give an accurate estimate, and I’m not good at body work myself. I’d guess a couple thousand to get it done right.
Thanks for posting. I have a question for you or the community: Wouldn't the air pocket behind these just encourage the rust to grow faster? I like the idea of covering the rust, but will this make the issue worse?
If salt is a factor it will probably speed up the rust a bit. I’d recommend washing and drying the truck, then cover the rust with POR-15 or something before putting the flares on. This truck is an 01 with 300k on it, so I was more concerned with just the looks.
Just added product links to the video description. The ones in this video are from Pro Tuning Lab. They are OEM style but stick out slightly more. I have another kit listed that’s a cheaper OEM knock off.
I’m wondering why not remover some of that rust and hit it with some rustoleum before putting flares on. And also, why not set with tape and then set fasteners.
If you set with the tape first, the fasteners may not line up right. If the truck was newer or less miles then I would have cut some rust out or hit it with some anti-rust, but at 20 years old with 250k miles, I just wanted it to look a bit better for a while.
Truck is 20 years old with 300k miles, it’ll be going to the scrapyard in a few years I just wanted to make it look better for the time being. But yes, would have been a good idea if it was going to last longer.
Lol no, that’s what the plastic clips and 3M tape are for. I did end up sealing around mine with a bead of clear silicone just for good measure after the video, but it’s not necessary.
1/4 million mile truck and over 20 years old. No stopping that rust without fully cutting the fender edges out and welding new ones in. Wasn’t about to put that time and effort into this truck lol.
